AUXIER, Addie (Baldridge)

Addie Auxier, age 64, died Monday, Janaury 16, at 5:30 p.m. in a local hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 19, at 10 a.m. in the Philadelphia Church of Christ with Edgar Hewlett officiating. Burial was held in the family cemetery at Johns Creek under direction of the Jones- Preston Funeral Home. Born November 8, 1902 in Floyd County, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Sarah Webb Baldridge.  She had lived at Van Lear Johns Creek.  Her husband, Jesse Brown Auxier, survives. Also surviving are two sons, Harold Kermit of Van Lear and Henry Ireland of Hammond, Indiana; three brothers, Kermit and Herbert Baldridge of Prestonsburg and Heber Baldridge of Little Paint, a sister, Mrs. Edith Elkins of Little Paint and two grandchildren. BOOTHE, Charley
1892-1967
Charley Boothe, age 74, died Thursday, January 19, at 3:55 p.m., at his home after a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 22, at 11 a.m., in the Chestnut Free Will Baptist Church, with Claude VanHoose and Gallie Isaac officiating. Burial took place in the VanHoose Cemetery at Chestnut, under direction of the Preston Funeral Home. Boothe, a son of Luke and Nan Damron Boothe, was born April 14, 1892, at Whitehouse. Spending his lifetime at Whitehouse, he had been a member of the Free Will Baptist Church and has been employed by the railroad. His wife who survives is Una Boothe.  They were married in Paintsville on May 6, 1953. Also surviving are three stepsons, Kennis Boyd of Whitehouse, Billie Boyd of Dayton, Ohio, and Robert Boyd of Detroit, Michigan; three daughters, Mrs. Loretta Blair of Paintsville, Mrs. Sheila Valentine of Richmond, Virginia, and Mrs. Nancy Cook of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Frank Boothe of Van Lear and Harrison Boothe of Auxier, and a sister, Mrs. Lotta Greer of Thealka. CANTRELL, Alma
1898-1967
Mrs. Alma Cantrell age 68, died Saturday, January 14, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio following a brief illness. Born May 9, 1898 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of Marion and Alice Williams Wright. Residing in Cincinnati, she had been a member of the Missionary Babtist Church. Her husband, the late Walter Cantrell proceded her in death in 1959. Survivors include two sons Raymond E. of Florence and Charles R. of Cincinnati. A brother Mannis Wright of Red Bush.  a sister Mrs. Hattie Ott of Nicholasville seven grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted today at 10 a.m. at the home of her brother at Red Bush with Rev. Ellis Hamilton officiating. CLARK, Nellie Rose (O'Bryan)
1885-1967
Former Resident Nellie Clark Dies January 1 Nellie Clark Nellie Rose O'Bryan Clark, age 81, of McDermott, Ohio and formerly of Johnson and Lawrence counties, died Sunday January 1, at McDermott. She was born September 23, 1885 at barnetts Creek, the daughter of John Ellis O'Bryan and Louisa Caroline Coffee. Her husband, the late John Willson Clark preceded her in death on February 6, 1957. They were married at Estill on December 5, 1907. She was also preceded by a son, Manuel E. Clarkm who died March 20, 1924 and a daughter Clovie Clark Beddow who died June 29, 1943. Surviving are four sons, Vanzel Elli and James Leonard, both of Columbus, John Edgar of Hilliards, Ohio and Rudolph of fairfield, Calif., two daughters, Mrs Clemie Clark Tackett of Lucasville, Ohio and Mrs. mary Louanna Clark Holbrook of Columbus, a sister Elizabeth O'bryan Clark of Volga, 25 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters -in-law, Telia Thompson O'Bryan of Williamson, West Virginia and Caroline (Tiny) Clark MeCarty of Adams. Funeral Services were held January 2 at Alders Chapel United Baptist Church in West Jefferson, Ohio with burial taking place in the Glenrest Cemetery in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. CONLEY, Dennis
1883-1967
Dennis (Den) Conley, age 83, died Saturday, January 21, at 7:15 a.m. in the Paintsville Hospital after a brief illness. Born July 17, 1883 at Hager Hill he was the son of John and Rhoda Peppin Conley. Conley, a retired carpenter, had been a lifetime resident of Hager Hill. His wife, the former Bessie Rice, survives.  They were married at Collista on January 23, 1908. Additional survivors include two sons, Marvin of Ashland and Cecil of Columbus, a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Dotson of Hager Hill, four grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 23, at 2 p.m. in the Chapter of the Preston Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Castle officiating.  Burial took place in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville with the Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Alex Pelphrey, Beecher Conley, William Henry Conley, Arie Blair and Dennis Blair. PAINTSVILLE HERALD WEDNESDAY January 25, 1967

   
DANIELS, Stella (Charles)
1887-1967
Stella Daniels, age 82, died Wednesday, January 25, at 11:05 p.m. at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Jessie Tackett, Jr. following a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, January 28, at 2 p.m. in the Lick Log Free Will Baptist Church with Cline Salyer officiating.  Burial took place in the family cemetery at Ulysses under direction of the Preston Funeral Home. She was born October 12, 1887 at Weeksberry, a daughter of William Matt and Vie Charles. Residing at Thealka for 27 years she had been a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Elbert, Lonzo and Samuel Castle, all of Thealka, two daughters, Mrs. Bessie Hall, of Delbarton, West Virginia and Mary Ann Charles of Columbus, Ohio, 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. JACKSON, Frank
1877-1967
Frank Jackson, age 89, died Friday, January 6, at 2 a.m. in a local hospital. The funeral was conducted Sunday, January 8, at 10 a.m. in the Pentecostal Church at Oil Springs with Adam Marshall and Melvin Blanton officiating.  Burial took place in the family cemetery at Oil Springs with the Paintsville Funeral Home in charge. Born November 25, 1877, in Johnson County, he was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Salyer Jackson. He was a lifetime resident of Oil Springs and a member of the Pentecostal Church. He had worked as a farmer. His wife, Cora Jackson, preceded him in death on July 11, 1950. Survivors include two sons, Carl and Branch, both of Oil Springs; four daughters, Mrs. Ada Blair of Oil Springs, Mrs. Ora Mae Kiser of South Charleston, West Virginia; Mrs. Alta Adams of Christiansburg, Ohio, and Mrs. Malta Powers of London, Ohio; a brother, John A. OSBORNE, Elbert (Bert)
1902-1967
Elbert (Bert) Osborne, age 64, died Wednesday, January 4, 1967, at 10:20 a.m. in the Paintsville Clinic following an extended illness. Born December 28, 1902 at Sitka, he was the son of Mack and Lou VanHoose Osborne. Retired from employment, he had lived at Sitka and was a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church. His wife the former Georgia Stambough survives.  They were married in Paintsville on July 11, 1922(?).  Also surviving are three sons, ?, William and Bert Allen, all at home, two step-sons, Clarence and Ernest Pennington, also at home, three daughters, Lowvrn, Connie Sue and Lou Ann, at home, a brother, Harold Osborne of Sitka, and six sisters, Mrs. Edgar Witten and Mrs. Jerry Womack, both of Springfield, Ohio, Mrs. Virgil Salyers of Piketon, Ohio, Mrs Challie Sayers  of Ironton, Ohio, Mrs Virgil McCarty of Aide, Ohio, Mrs. Roy Wiley of Dayton, Ohio. PIERCE, Floyd Sr.
1893-1967
Floyd Pierce, Sr. age 73, died Wednesday, January 25, 1967 at 6 a.m. in the Paintsville Clinic after an extended illness.  Born October 10, 1893 in Tayes, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Pierce Skeens.  A retired truck driver, he had lived in Paintsville for several years. His wife who surives is the former Myrtie B. Thompson.  Additional survivors include a son, Floyd, Jr. of Paintsville, a daughjter, Mrs. Josephine Webb of Springfield, Ohio and seven grandchildren. The funeral was held Friday January 27, 1967 at 1 p.m. at the Thealka Free Will Baptist Church with Don Fraley and C. C. RICE, Charles Clay
1917-1967
Charles Clay Rice, age 49 died on Friday morning January 20 at his home on Preston Street after a sudden illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, January 22, at 1 p.m. in the Rock House, Free Will Baptist Church with Revs. Alfred Frazier, Jr., and Ellis Hamilton officiating. Singing was provided by the Staffordsville Quartet. Interment followed in the Rice Cemetery at Hager Hill with the Paintsville Funeral Home in charge. He was born on March 14, 1917, in Johnson County, a son of Mose Rice who survives and the late Mattie Watkins Rice. Residing in Paintsville he was employed as a cab driver and had served 4 years in the United States Army. Survivors in addition to his father include a daughter, Mrs. George McFaddin, Jr., of Staffordsville, a brother, Henry Rice of Paintsville, three sisters, Mrs. Faye Correvon of Pittsburg, California and Mrs. Martha Jean Spradlin and Mrs. Mary Lou Caudill, both of Staffordsville, and a grandson, Jeffrey Thomas McFaddin of Staffordsville. ROBINSON, Clarence
1921-1967
Clarence Robinson, age 45, died Monday, January 16, at 1 a.m. in the V.A. Hosptial in Louisville after a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted today at 1 p.m. at the Thealka Free Will Baptist Church with Claude Preston and Filmore Gambill, officiating. Born October 23, 1921 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Proctor and Margaret Spears Robinson. A World War II verteran, he had resided at Thealka during his lifetime. His wife, the former Evelyn Daniels, survives. Also surviving is a son Clarence Lee and a daughter, Peggy Sue, both at home, three brothers, John of Springfield, Ohio, Bill of Franklin, Ohio and Ernest of Dayton, Ohio, three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy VanHoose of Thealka, and Mrs. Addie Castle and Mrs. Rhoda McFadden, both of Springfield, Ohio, and an aunt, Norina Sturgill of  Thealka. SHAFFER, Maudie Grace (Gross)
1904-1967
Maudie Grace Shaffer, age 62, dies Friday, January 6 at 6:30 p.m. in Doctor's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio following a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted Monday, January 9, at 2 p.m. in the Hammond Free Will Baptist Church with, Joseph Hoskins officiating. Burial took place the Wilson Cemetery at Boons Camp, under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home. She was born July 9, 1904 at Amba, the daughter of Nannie Meade Gross, who survives and the late Madison Gross, was a member of the Church of Christ, and had resided in Columbus for seven years. Additional survivors include her husband, Martin Shaffer, a son, Samuel D. Harvey of Columbus, two brothers, Bosher Gross of Whitehouse, and Ken Gross of  Copperston, West Virginia; three sisters, Ruth Gross of Whitehouse, Mrs. Pearl Gibson and Mrs. Hiden Meade both of Columbus, Ohio and a half brother, Cirus Meade of Whitehouse. TEVIS, Ray V.
1915-1967
Ray V. Tevis, age 51, died suddenly Monday, January 23, at 11 pm in a mine at Wheelwright. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 26, at 1 pm in the Free Will Baptist Church at Van Lear with Robert Martin officiating. Burial took place in the Richmond Cemetery at King Addition, Paintsville. Pall bearers were Bill Tackett, Ray Adams, Floyd Collins, Aud Williamson, Ocal Dawson and Pat McCoart. Tevis, a son of Harrison Tevis and the late Emily Karr Tevis, was born in Vandalia, Illinois on February 8. 1915. He had lived at Van Lear for several years and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He had been employed as a miner and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. His wife, the former Ethel Whitaker survives. They were married in 1940. Also surviving are three sons, James Vernon Tevis of Zion, Illinois, David Ray and Ronald Douglas Tevis of Van Lear and daughter Mrs. Joyce Lee Vanhoose of River Rouge, Michigan, six brothers, four sisters and five grandchildren. THOMAS, Bert
1967
Bert Thomas, age 78, died Wednesday, January 11, at 9:30 pm at his home in Flat Gap where he had spent his lifetime. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 14 at 1pm in the Enterprise Baptist Church at Flat Gap uner the direction of the Jones Preston Funeral Home. He was a son of the late C.M. and Ann Bunyard Thomas. His wife the former Maude Sturgill, survives. Additional survivors include a son, John Paul of Galena, Ohio; a brother, Con of Ypsilanti, Michigan, four sisters, Mrs. Sue Williams of Mechanicsburg, Ohio; Mrs. Mary Salyer s of Red Bush, Mrs May Evans of Columbus, Ohio and Mrs. Bess Mckenzie of Sunbury, Ohio; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. VANHOOSE, Lora Mae (Williams)
1967 1967
Lora Mae Vanhoose, 39, formerly of Paintsville, died Thursday January 19, as a result of an accident in Louisville. The vehicle she was driving was struck by a train at a rail crossing in Jefferson County. She was the wife of  Dr. James E. Vanhoose, formerly of Paintsville, and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar P. Williams, also of Paintsville. Surviving are her husband and six children: Gregory 13, Brian 9, Jim Doug 7, twins Kent and Kyra 6, and Steven 3. Three brothers; John Patton Williams of Versailles, Oscar Williams Jr. of Flat Gap and Bob Williams of Paintsville, also survive, as do two sisters, Lillian Meade of Paintsville and Anna Mary Adams of Owensboro. Mrs. Vanhoose had resided in Louisville for eighteen months prior to her death. Funeral services were held Sunday, January 22, at the First Methodist Church in Paintsville with Rev. J. H. Burton presiding. Burial followed at Highland Memorial Park, in Staffordsville, under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home. Paintsville Herald Wednesday January 25, 1967

   
WARD, Oma (Mollett)
1901-1967
Oma Ward, age 62, died Wednesday, January 4 at 9:30 a.m.  in the Paintsville Clinic after an extended illness.  She was the daughter of the late J.W. "Jim" and Alice Sammons Mollett, born in Floyd County on September 12, 1901. Residing in Paintsville for several years, she was a member of the Baptist Church. Her husband Noah Ward, survives.  Additional survivors include three sonsm Phillip, Frank and Wendall all of Paintsville, five daughters,  Irene Ward of Pikeville, Mrs. Lula Frances, Mrs. Faye Houck and Mrs. Mary Lou Roberts, all of Paintsville, and Mrs. Laura May Parks of Little Rock Arkansas, two brothers, Joe Mollett of Lowmansville, and Doug Mollett of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and four sisters.  Mrs. Dixie Hatfield of East Point, Mrs. Ruby Mahan of Vinton, Ohio, Mrs. Anna Ward of Grundy, Virginia and Mrs. Lora Music of Lowmansville. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 7, at 1 p.m. in the East Point Church of Christ with Tom Blankenship of Prestonsburg and Scott Castle officiating. WILLIAMS, Earl
1895-1967
Earl Williams, age 71, died Monday, January 2, at 2:14 a.m. at his home after a brief illness. Funeral services were held today at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Paintsville Funeral Home with J.T. Bailey and Arnold Reed officiating. Interment followed in the Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville with the Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Born September 23, 1895 at Ripley, West Virginia, he was the son of William & Diana Dwere Williams. A retired farmer, he had resided at Oil Springs and was a member of the United Baptist Church. His wife, the former E___ Reed survives. Additional survivors include a son, Scland E. of Limestone, Maine; three daughters, Mrs. Walter Horne of Hillard, Ohio, Mrs. Robert Irwin of West Jefferson, Ohio and Mrs. Jerry Redding of Vallejo, California, a sister Mrs. Charles Long of Ripley, and eight grand- children. WILLIAMS, Ollie Sr. 1906-1967 Ollie Williams, Sr., age 60, died Wednesday morning January 4, in the Sheldon Hospital in Albion Michigan after a brief illness. Born August 2, 1906 in Johnson County, he was the son of James and Dora Williams. He had resided in Letchfield, Michigan, was employed by the Railroad and also worked as a farmer. His wife, the former Ida Jackson, preceded him in death on September 18, 1961. Survivors include two sons Daliee of Letchfield and Ollie, Jr. of Homer, Michigan, a brother, I.B. Williams of Staffordsville, three sisters, Mrs. Walter Jackson of Rochester, Indiana, Mrs. Pearl McKnight of Ashland and Mrs. Esta Saylor of DeGraf, Ohio and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, January 6, at 1 p.m. in the Pentecostal Church at Oil Springs with Adam Marshall officiating. BLAIR, Lincoln
1888-1967
Lincoln Blair, age 79, died Wednesday, February 1, at 9:50 p.m. in the Methodist Hospital in Pikeville after an extended illneee. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 4, at 1 p.m. in the Jones-Preston Funeral Home with Scott Castle officiating. Blair was born in Johnson County on July 23 1888 and had resided at Hager Hill where he was a retired carpenter. His wife the former Cora Adams, preceded him in death. Survivors include a son J.D. of Pikecille, and one grandson. Pallbearers were Dennis Blair, James Blair, Dorman Spears, Douglas Blair, Delmar Hunter and JAmes Greathouse. BROWN, Lawrence
1890-1967
Lawrence Brown, age 76, died Wednesday, February 8, at 8:20 pm., in the Paintsville Clinic. The body was at the Preston Funeral Home Thursday evening and Friday morning, and then was moved to Clay, West Virginia, to the Wilson Funeral Home where funeral services were held on Sunday, February 13, at 2 p.m.  Burial took place in the Sunset Cemetery at Bickmore, West Virginia. Brown, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Brown, was born on February 10, 1890, in Clay County, West Virginia. He had been a resident of Van Lear for the past 13 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Letha Wall of Procious, West Virginia, and Mrs. Tillie McFarland of Ohio, and a son, Phillip of Canton, Ohio. PAINTSVILLE HERALD WEDNESDAY FEB. 15, 1967

  
BUTCHER, Wilda (Boyd)
1967
Wilda Boyd Butcher died Tuesday, February 28, at 11:15 a.m. in the Paintsville Clinic after a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. in the Mayo Methodist Church with Rev. Leslie Rodgers officiating.  burial took place in the Butcher Cemetery at Williamsport with the Preston Funeral Home in charge. Serving as pallbearers were Vernon Philbey, Walter Meek and K.B. Williams. Mrs. Butcher, the daughter of W.S. and Juda Meek Boyd, was born in Paintsville and spent her lifetime here. She was a member of the D.A.R. and also a member of the Methodist Church.  She had been employed as a florist for the past 26 years. Survivors include a son, John K. Jr. of Louisville a daughter, Dr. Alpharetta Archer of Paintsville, and a brother G.V. (son) Boyd of Hager Hill. Also surviving are one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. FERGUSON, Noah
1908-1967
Noah Ferguson, age 58, died Thursday, February 2, at 9:25 p.m. in the Veterans Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia after an extended illness. Born March 11, 1908 in Morgan County he was the son of the late Isom and Mary Brown Ferguson. He had lived at West Van Lear and was a World War II Veteran. His wife the former Nola Spears survives. Also surviving are two brothers, Eddie Ferguson of Moon and Lennie Ferguson of Relief and four sisters, Mrs. Carrie Smith of Circleville, Ohio, Mrs. Virgie McCendon of Sciotoville, Ohio, Mrs. Earl Rowland of Mt. Sterling, Ohio, Mrs. Maxie Hamilton of Red Bush. The funeral was conducted Sunday, February 5, at 12 noon at the Cindy Creek Church with Emery Ferguson officiating.  Burial took place in the Ferguson Cemetery at Relief under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home. FITCH, Tug
1886-1967
Tug Fitch, age 81, died Monday, February 13, at 7:55 p.m. at his home in Thealka following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church with Arnold Reed, O I Williams, Florida Lyons and Cully Sparks officiating.  Interment was held in the Daniels Cemetery at Tutor Key with the Preston Funeral Home in church of arrangements. Fitch, a son of Burgess and Mary Fraley Fitch, was born on January 3, 1886 at Richardson. A member of the United Baptist Church he had resided at Thealka for several years and was a retired miner. His wife who survives is the former May Daniels. Also surviving are two sons, Olen Fitch of Logan, West Virginia and Ora Fitch of Marion, Ohio, three daughters, Mrs. Betty Lou Webb of Logan, West Virginia, Mrs. Kathleen Bradley of Thealka and Mrs. Pauline Thompson of Zebulon, two step-sons, James W. Osborne of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Bill Osborne of Thealka and a step-daughter, Mrs. Emmalee O’Bryan of Thealka. Samuel Edward (Edd) Lowe, age 86, died Friday, February 3, at 9:30 p.m. in the Paintsville Clinic following a brief illness. Born May 9, 1880 in Logan, West Virginia, he was the son of Peter and Martha Hicks Lowe. He had lived in Van Lear for the past two years. His wife, Minnie Lowe survives. His first wife, Bertha Jane Lowe, preceded him in death in 1957. Additional survivors include a son, Charlie of West Van Lear; two daughters, Sadie Lowe of Logan, West Virginia and May Queen of Columbus, Ohio, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Ray Meade, age 67, died Sunday, February 12, in the Mountain Manor Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was born in Johnson County on November 9, 1899.  His wife, the former Loretta Kelly, survives. Additional survivors include two sons, Leo R. Meade of Huntington, West Virginia and David Ronald Meade who is now in Vietnam, three brothers, Bill Meade and Robert Meade, both of Cocoa, Florida, and Guy Meade of Prestonsburg, and four sisters, Mrs. Ora M. Hershel Murphy, age 38, died Thursday, February 9, 4 a.m. in Allenton, Michigan following brief illness.  Born February 14, 1928 at Meally, he was the son of Everett and Ada Powers Murphy who survive.  Residing at Allenton he had worked as a job-setter at General Motors Company.  His wife who survives is the former Lorene Coleman.  Additional survivors include a son, Lawrence, two daughters, Peggy Elaine and Ernestine, all at home, a brother Glen Murphy of Warren, Michigan, and five sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Stambaugh and Mrs. Ruby Brown of Warren, Michigan, Mrs. Myrtle McDaniel and Mrs. Josphine Keller, both of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. Minerva Trudeau of Lexington.  The funeral was held Sunday, February 12 at 1 p.m. at the Meally Church of Christ with J. Beecher Patrick, age 53, died Saturday, February 18, 1967, at 11:25 p.m. at his home in Meally after a brief illness.  Born September 28, 1913 in Johnson County, he was the son of Nancy Vuletch Patrick and the late Noah Patrick.  A miner and construction worker, Patrick had been a lifelong resident of Meally.  His wife the former Nancy Adams survives. Della Rice, age 87 died Wednesday, February 22 at 5:10 a.m. in an Ashland hospital after a brief illness. The funeral was held Friday, February 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Jones and Preston Funeral Home with Rev. J. H. Burton officiating. Burial took place in the Wells Cemetery at Paintsville. Serving as Pallbearers were Bill Slone, Sam Rice, Jr., David Jones, Jess Songer, Harold M. Rice and Tom Meade. She was born July 8, 1879 in Johnson County, a daughter of the late Zachery and Mary Bayes Caudill. Mrs. Rice had been a resident of Paintsville and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Her husband the late I. G. Rice, Sr., preceded her in death in 1944. A daughter Bernice Rice died in 1937. Survivors include three sons, I. Wilbur C Stapleton, 41, of Charleston W. Va and formerly of Red Bush, died Saturday, February 11, in the Kanawha Valley Hospital. He was the son of the late Lafe and Margie Williams  Stapleton of Catlettsburg. Surviving are his wife, Margaret, and a daughter, Patricia Ann, and two sons, Stacey Lee and Joseph, all at home. Also surviving are three brothers, Stacey of Dover, Tennessee; Beecher of Middletown, Ohio; and Otto of South Point, Ohio. He was the nephew of Mrs. Carmen Williams Blanton, Mrs. Ada Williams Lyons and  Mrs. Lexie Williams Haney, all formerly of Red Bush. Educated in Kentucky schools, he was employed by the Diamond Department Store in Charleston. He was  a veteran of World War II, and a member, deacon and usher in the Baptist Church. Don C. Vanhoose, age 82, died Monday February 27, at 9:30 pm.at the Haven Crest Nursing Home. Born November 29. 1884, he was the son of Henry and Nancy Baldwin Vanhoose. He was a retired attorney and had been elected county attorney for Johnson County several terms, the last term being in 1958. He had also been Circuit Court Clerk here, and with the Internal Revenue Service during the term of Governor Willis. He had lived in Paintsville and was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. His wife the former Josephine Stapleton, preceded him in death on September 20, 1964. Survivors include a son, Henry and a daughter Mrs. Marshia Blair both of Paintsville. Funeral services will be held tomorrow March 2, at 1 pm at the Third Street Free Will Bapotist Church with CC Hall, Ellis Hamilton and Millard Vanhoose officiating. Columbus (Lum) Castle, age 90, died Thursday, March 2, at 10:30am at the Paintsville Clinic, following an extended illness. Born february 17, 1877 at Tutor Key, he was the son of Eli and Toal Castle. A retired miner for 37 years, Castle had spent a lifetime in Tutor Key. His wife, who survives, is the former Carrie VanHoose. Additional survivors include three sons, Don of Tutor key and Elmer and Raymond, both of Marion, Ohio, three daughters, Mrs. Virgie Davis of marion Ohio, Mrs. Tille Meade of  Wittenville and Mayrne Castle of Tutor Key, two brothers John Castle of Meally and Jessie Castle of Drift, and a sister, Mrs Tisha Butcher of Wabash, Indiana. She had been a resident of Volga for the past twenty-one years and is a member of the United baptist Church. She was married to James Clark, who survives on January 18, 1960. Mrs. Myrtle Kelly, age 63, died Wednesday morning, March 22, at 10:15 a.m. in a local hospital following a sudden illness. Funeral and burial services were held on Friday, March 24 at 2 p.m. in the family cemetery at Flat Gap with Charlie Blanton officiating and arrangements under direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Born July 14, 1903 in Morgan County, she was the daughter of Cornelius and Minda Cantrell Fyffe. She had lived at Flat Gap for 20 years. A daughter, Mrs. Jackson Benhken preceded Mrs. Kelly in death. Her husband, Charlie Kelly survives. They were married in 1920. Other survivors include four sons. Wallace and Nelius both of Dayton, Ohio. Callis of Staffordsville and Maxwell of Flat Gap, a brother Callis Fyffe of El Paso, Texas and two sisters, Mrs Delcie Caskie of Versailles and Mrs. Pearl Caskie of West Liberty. Frank C. Lewis, age 91, died Wednesday, March 22, at 9:55 a.m. in the Crest Haven Nursing Home after extended illness. The funeral was held Saturday, March 25, at 10 a.m. at the Boons Camp Free Will Baptist Church with Mack Provence officiating. Interment followed in the Dennie Pigg Cemetery at Boons Camp with the Preston Funeral Home in charge. Lewis, a son of John and Martha Greybeal Lewis, was born on March 6, 1876 in Ashville, North Carolina. He had resided at Boons Camp for 80 years. His wife, the former Cora C. Mollet, preceded him in death on June 4, 1950. Died March 11 Oscar McCarty, age 84, died Saturday night, March 11 at his home after a sudden illness. Born January 8, 1883 at Manila he was the son of James and Sarah Coldron McCarty. Spending his lifetime at Manila he was minster of the United Baptist Church.  He also was a retired carpenter and farmer. His wife the former Leaner Williams preceded him in death on May 30, 1959. Survivors include three sons, of Clyde of manila, Woodrow of Flemingsburg and Joe of Ashland, three daughters, Mrs. Gusta Lemaster of Manila and Mrs. Dally Salyer and Mrs. Ester Reynolds both of Ashland, and three sisters, Mrs. Luther Baldwin of Winchester.  Mrs. Donna Buckley of Ashland and Mrs. Mollie Lemaster of Manila. Ermest A. Potts, age 54, died suddenly Wednesday, March 22, in Ravenna, Ohio. He was born on March 2, 1913, in Painesville, Ohio, a son of Fred and Sarah Johnson Pitts. He had spent his lifetime in Painesville, was a member of the First Baptist Church and also belonged to the Odd Fellows Afilitopms. He was employed as an engineer. His wife who survives is the former Irene Preston, formerly of Johnson County. Other survivors include two sons, Robert J. Potts of Ashtabula, Ohio and Robie Lee Potts of Painesville. Mr. Potts was the brother-in-law of F. J. and Mitchell Prston, both of Paintsville and Glenn Preston of Hamilton, Ohio. Preston, a son of the late Anderson B. and Catherine Howard Preston, was born in Johnson County on December 28, 1889. He had resided in Van Lear for the past 16 years, was a member of the United Baptist Church of Paintsville and a member of the Paintsville 381 F & AM. A former farmer and merchant, he was also a former co-owner of Big Sandy Hardware. Survivors include his widow, the former Zora Daniel, a daughter Mrs. Katherine Chandler of Van Lear, two sisters, Mrs. Manchia Gordon and Mrs. Lorinda Lallow, both of Portsmouth, Ohio and two brothers, Arthur Preston of Wheelersburg, Ohio and Mitchell Preston of Nashville, Indiana. Interment followed in the Highlands Memorial Park at Staffordsville under the direction of the Jones Preston Funeral Home. Born November 23, 1890 in Johnson County he was the son of the late Dan H. and Carrie Melvin Roberts. Roberts, a lifelong resident of Paintsville, was a member of the Third Street Free Will Baptist Church. He was a former telephone and power lineman and also a veteran of World War I. Clara Whitaker, age 82, died Friday, March 24, at 2:25p.m. in the Paintsville, Hospital after a brief illness. Born October 12, 1884 at Bonanza, she was the daughter of James and Rebecca Pucke Whitaker. She was a life-long resident of Whitaker and a member of the United Baptist Church. Thomas II Butcher, age 90, died Friday, April 7, at Paintsville at the Crest Haven Nursing Home after an extended illness. Born June 11, 1876 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Simon and Clara Webb Butcher. Spending his lifetime at Van Lear, Butcher was a retired farmer. Surviving are nine sons, Wetzel, Dennis, Melvin, Warren, Temmie, and Jess, all of Van Lear. Wilburn of Wittensville, and Frank and Hershell both of Wabash Indiana. Seven daughters, Mrs. Daisy Beddow of columbus Ohio; Mrs. Lydia May Collins and Mrs. Joan Music, both of Wabash Indiana, Mrs. Dorothy Bucks of Chicago, Illinois, Mrs. Thelma Hash of Mullins, West Virginia, Mrs. Wanda Lee Prater of Greenup and Mrs. Cynthia _____ of Marion, Indiana. Also surviving is a brother Willie Butcher of Paintsville. 20 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Lydia Chandler, now 71, died Saturday April 1, at 12:15am in the Paintsville hospital after an extended illness. The funeral was conducted Saturday, April 3, at 11 a.m., at the Lomansville Enterprise Baptist Church with Ellis Hamilton officiating. Burial services took place in the family cemetery at Lowmansville with the Preston Funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Born August 19, 1892 at Whitehouse, she was the daughter of Farmer and Fannie Borders BeBoard. She had resided at River for three years and was a member of the Enterprise baptist Church. Her husband the late William Chandler, preceded her in death on Janaury 15, 1959. Survivors inlcude six sons, Ova and Elmer, both of Lowmansville, Tom of Jenkins, James of Springfiled, Ohio, Orvill of South Point, Ohio and William Jr. of River, two daughters, Mrs. Edith Daniels of Lowmansville and Mrs. Oakie Johnson of Neon and a brother F. Geneva Davis, age 35, died Sunday, April 9, at her home after a brief illness. James Fairchild, age 38, died on Saturday, April 29 in Ashtabula, Ohio after a brief illness. Born February 29, 1929 in Paintsville, he was the son of James B and Martha Baldridge Fairchild. He had been a resident of Ashtabula for ten years.   His wife who survives is the former Helen Williamson.  They were married in Ashtabula on October 20, 1951. Additional survivors include a son William Douglas and two daughters, Patsy and Sharon all at home, four brothers, Clifford Fairchild, Jack Fairchild and Joe Fairchild, all of Paintsville and William Fairchild of Las Vegas, Nevada and three sisters, Virginia VanHoose of Paintsville, Mary Shockley of Canton, Ohio and Bertha Blanton of Ashtabula, Ohio. Willie (Bill) Perry, age 62, died Monday, April 10, 1967, at 7:15 p.m. in the Paintsville Hospital.  Born September 13, 1904 at Van Lear he was a son of George and Martha Harmon Perry.  Spending most of his life time at Boons Camp.  Perry had been a member of the United Baptist Church.  He was also retired from employment. His wife, the former Roberta Williams, survives.  They were married on April 12, 1963 at Inez. Surviving are three step-sons, Larry Keith Daniels of Ohio, Albert Lee Daniels at home and Tony Daniels serving with the U. S. Armed Forces, four step-daugthers, Debra, Karen, Beverly and Pamela Daniels, all at home,  two brothers, Delbert and Jack Perry both of Boons Camp and six sisters, Grace Preston, Della Staniford, Sarah Daniels and Elvin Daniels, all of Boons Comp, Marie Smith of Youngstown, Ohio and Opal Smith of Wabash, Indiana. Henry Porter, age 91, died Saturday, April 22 at 4:30 p.m. in the Mountain Manor Nursing Home after an extended illness. Born October 13, 1875 in Floyd County at Cow Creek, he was the son of Henry L., Sr. and Aramenia Wells Porter. A lifetime resident of Auxier, Porter had been a member of the Methodist Church. His wife the former Myrtle Clark preceded him in death on August 30, 1958. survivors include two sons, Henry Howard of Auxier and Gene Morgan of Columbus, Ohio, a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Scott of Kenova, West Virginia, five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Rites Are Held April 27 For Miss Kathryn Rice Miss Kathryn Rice, 73, former teacher and businesswoman, died Tuesday, April 25 in the Cabell Huntington Hospital after a brief illness. Born September 9, 1893, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Emma Price Rice. A resident of Swamp Branch, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Paintsville. The farm on which she lived was a part of the original farm homesteaded by her pioneer grandfather, John R. Rice, in 1815. Mrs. Rice had taught in county schools here after receiving her education at what is now Eastern State University, and later owned a millinery shop in Paintsville. She also had been associated with Consolidation Coal Company at Van Lear and with New River Coal Company at Mt. Hope, W. Va. Surviving are a brother, Sherman Rice of Swamp Branch, and six sisters, Mrs. Oscar Rice of Louisa, Mrs. J. L. Watkins of Mt. Hope, Mrs. Maurice Baker of Lexington, Mrs. Wallies M. Bailey of Lexington and Mrs. Walter H. Meek of Paintsville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday, April 27, and burial followed in the family cemetery at Swamp Branch, with the Rev. John Sammons officiating. Nova Slone, age 63, died Friday, April 21, the in the Painstville Hospital after a brief illness. Cynthia Bowen Ward, 58, of Meally, died Tuesday morning at her home.  Coroner James Preston said that Mrs. Ward died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound.  She re- portedly had been in ill health and a depressed state for several weeks. Born May 6, 1908, she was the daughter of the late George and Massie Hefs Bowen. Survivors include two sones, Richard Butcher of Louisa and Jeptha Ward Jr., of Meally, and two daughters, Goldie Ward of Meally and Massie Ward of Offutt. Also surviving are a brother, Jessie Brown of Blacksburg, Virginia, and three sisters:  Gracie Bowen of Williamsport, Dixie Hale of Wabash, Indiana, and Massie Ward of Lancaster, Ohio. Melvin Wells, age 66, died Sunday, April 2, at 9:30 p.m.  at Van Lead (Johns Creek) following a brief illness. Born October 10, 1900 in Floyd County he was the son of the late Noah and Louise Butcher Wells.  He had lived at Van Lear for a year but was formerly of Auxier. Wells a retired mine worker was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.  His surviving wife is the former Ola Burchett. Also surviving is a daughter, Linda Louise Wells of Auxier and three step-sons, Willie A. Burchett of Hickman Air Force Base, Hawaii, James Lee Burchett of Ft. Knox and Franklin D. Burchett of Ft. Stewart, Ga.,  three brothers, Bill, Edward and Arville Wells of Auxier and six sisters, Mrs. Sally Hall and Mrs. Nancy Wells both of Auxier, Mrs. Verna Auxier and Mrs. Josephine Robinson both of East Point, Mrs. Bertie Adkins of Van Lear and Mrs. Beatrice Fitch of Meally. Mrs. Myrtle Buchanan, 52, died Thursday, May 18 in Newport News, Virginia, after an extended illness. Born in Johnson County on October 4, 1914, she was the daughter of late John and Missouri Phillips Sparks.  She had lived at Newport News for the last 28 years. One son, Paul Buchanan of Louisville, and one daughter, Mrs. John L. Lee of Tampa, Florida survive. Also surviving are three sisters Mrs. Mona Roth of Paintsville, Mrs. Alma Neely of Hampton, Virginia and Mrs. Maxie Stodghill of Yorktown, Virginia and four brothers O. B. Services for Luther Conley, 56 of 9124 N. 14th St., will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Hansen Mortuary's Sunnyslope Chapel, 1314 N. Seventh St., with burial in Resthaven Memorial-Park. Robert “Bob” Estep, 82, died at 11:00 p.m. on Monday, May 8, at the Crest Haven Nursing Home, after an extended illness. Born at Flat Gap on March 24, 1884, he was the son of Amberg J. and Jane Holbrook Estep.  He was a former railroader and at the time of his death was a resident of Paintsville. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Bill Kimbler and Mrs. Claude Kimbler of Marysville, Ohio and Mrs. James Combs of Milford Center, Ohio.  Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. Elijah “Pete” Goble, age 75, died Monday, May 8 at 2 a.m. at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Walter Ramey of East Point, following an extended illness. Funeral serviced were conducted today, May 10 at 1 p.m. at the East Point Church of Christ with Bill Ford officiating. Interment followed in the family cemetery at West Van Lear under direction of the Jones Preston Funeral Home. Born May 7, 1892 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late Christopher and Helen Baldridge Goble. A lifelong resident of East Point, Goble had been employed as a mechanic and was also a member of the East Point Church of Christ. A son and a daughter Franklin and Anne Goble preceded him in death. Mrs. McKenzie Dies Following 3-Month Illness Mrs. Josephine DeBoard McKenzie, 67, of 938 Harris St., Catlettsburg, died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in King’s Daughters’ Hospital following an illness of three months. Born March 17, 1900, at Paintsville, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Lydia Meade Wilcox. She had been a resident of Catlettsburg for the past eight years and was a member of the Buchanan Church of God. Surviving are the husband, Hiram McKenzie, one daughter, Mrs. Martha Fode of Kent, WA: two sons, Herman and Levi DeBoard, both of Catlettsburg; three sisters, Mrs. Delphia VanHoose, Mrs. Tave Daniels, and Mrs. Dora Mead, all of Paintsville; two brothers, John and Levi Wilcox, both of Paintsville; 26 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. W. Russell Meade, 34, died Monday at his home in King Addition, Paintsville, after an extended illness. Born June 18, 1932, he was the son of Vertrice Dave Meade and Russell Meade, executive vice president of the First National Bank of Paintsville. He is survived by his wife, the former Myrna Sparks and two young sons, W. Russell Meade Jr. and Steven Howard Meade. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. R. M. Wilhite of Lexington and Mrs. Edsel Arnett of Berea.  An employee of the U.S. Post Office in Paintsville, he graduated from Our Lady of the Mountains here, and served with the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in 1952.  He was a member of Mayo Methodist Chuirch, and a former Kiwanian. Services will be held Thursday, May 11, at 2 p.m. in the Mayo Methodist Church with Rev. Leslie Rogers and Rev. Jeff Burton officiating. Joseph Ofsowitz,61, died Wednesday, May 31, 1967, at 3:45 a.m. in the Paintsville Hospital after an apparent heart attack.  Born December 25, 1905 in Passaie, New Jersey, he was the son of Harry and Rose Weiner Ofsowitz.  He had resided in Louisville for the past four years.  Employed as a credit manager for Stewart Clothing in Louisville, Ofsowitz was a member of the Jewish faith. His wife who survives is the former Maxine Meek, a former resident of Chestnut. They were married in Toledo, Ohio on Demember 17, 1941.  Additional survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Martinez of Louisville and Marybeth Budd of Silver Springs, Maryland, a foster daughter, Nancy Henry of Harrisburg, Pa., and four brothers, Louis Ofsowitz and Sam Ofsowitz both of Miami, Florida, Michael Ofsowitz of Clifton, New Jersey and Jack Ofsowitz of Rochester, New York.  Also surviving are two grandchildren. PRESTON, Ora Mae

Miss Ora Mae Preston, daughter of Cyrus M. and Alice Price Pres- ton and a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of Eastern Kentucky, died Sunday May 28, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Frank C. Malin, in Ashland. Miss Preston was born at Paintsville, and spent most of her life here.  Both the Preston and Price families were pioneers in the Big Sandy Valley, and were closely associated with the early history of Paintsville and Johnson County. A graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Miss Ora for fifty years was an instructor in music at Paintsville.  A member of Mayo Methodist Church she served as choir director and in other activities of the church.  She was a member of the Harman Station Chapter, National Society, Dauthters of the American Revolution serving the chapter as Regent and in other important offices. Surviving, in addition to Mrs. Malin, are another sister, Mrs. Esther Range of Winchester, and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Roger Preston of Ashland and Mrs. Ray Prston of Apple Valley, California. Services were held Wednesday, May 31, in the Mayo Memorial Church, with Rev. Leslie M. Rogers officiating.  Burial followed in the Preston Cemetery under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funera. Mrs. Madge VanHoose Stapleton, age 70, of 272 Second Street, Paintsville, the widow of the late Eli Stapleton, died at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington after an extended illness. She was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson County.  A daughter of the late Marion and Emma Dickson Vanhoose. She was also a member of the Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. William Harding of Winchester, Mrs. Edna VanHoose of Paintsville and Mrs. Francis Mollett of Huntington, West Virginia, a son, Jay Stapleton of Lexington and two sisters, Mrs. Hervie Burchett of Stambaugh and Mrs. Elro VanHoose of Nippa. Born January 11, 1890 in Johnson County she was a daughter of the John C. and Helen Johnson Conley. Spending her lifetime at Jenny’s Creek, Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Her husband , the late Otto Taylor her in death in 1920. Thomas C. Trimble, age 75, died Saturday, May 27 at 3:05 pm in the VA Hospital in Huntington following and extended illness. Trimble a resident of Paintsville dor the last 30 years, was born August 5, 1891 at Barnetts Creek, the son of Nathanial and Nancy Vanhoose Trimble. A member of the United Baptist Church, Trimble was also a retired carpenter and a disabled Veteran of World War I. His wife, Mollie Trimble, survives. Additional survivors also include two sons, Les Trimble of Paintsville and David Lee Blalir of Dayton, Ohio and four grandchildren. Richard M. “Dick” Wells, age 79, died Friday, May 5 at 10:15 a.m. in a local hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at the Auxier Methodist Church with Stanley Roberts officiating.  Burial was held in the Government Cemetery at Auxier under the direction of the Jones & Preston Funeral Home. Born March 14, 1888 in Floyd County he was the son of the late Alex M. and Polly Perry Wells. Residing in Auxier for several years, Wells, a retired miner, was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was also a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was also a member of the Church of Christ. Sally Wells, 65, died Wednesday, May 24, 1967 at 9 p.m. in the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, Ohio after a brief illness. Virgie Mae Wells, age 12, died Wednesday, May 31 at 4:10 p.m. in the Paintsville Hospital following an automobile accident. She was the daughter of Martin and Virginia Combs Wells and was born in Tollsboro, KY on May 7, 1955. Spending most of her lifetime at Van Lear, she was a member o the Free Will Baptist Church. Malcolm Wiley, age 85, died Tuesday, May 9 at 3:30 p.m. in the Crest Haven Nursing Home after an extended illness. Born April 3, 1882 in Johnson County, he was the son of the late R.W. and Alice Stapleton Wiley. A lifelong resident of Tutor Key, Wiley was a retired miner and also a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. His wife the late Elizabeth Wiley preceded him in death on September 19, 1962. William G. Williams, age 73, died Saturday, May 13, at 2:15 p.m. in a local nursing home. Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 15, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Paintsville Funeral Home with Ellis Hamilton and Alfred Frazier, Jr. officiating. Special music was provided by the Staffordsville Quartet. Interment followed in the Burke Cemetery at Oil Springs with the Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Born February 4, 1894 in Morgan County, he was the son of D.B. and Rhoda E. Cooper Williams. He had resided at Oil Springs and was a former oil field employee. His wife the late Esta L. Williams preceded him in death on February 25, 1966. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marie Blanton of Oil Springs, a brother T.H. Williams of Oil Springs and two sisters, Mrs. R.C. Mrs. Bonnie Archer, 45, of Paintsville, the widow of Dr. James W. Archer, who died June 20, 1966, died late Monday night in Prestonsburg General Hospital following a three-month illness. Mrs. Archer was born September 20, 1921, in Johnson County, the daughter of Samuel Stapleton Jr. of Ashland and the late Mabel Oppenheimer Barney.  She was a member of the Mayo Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to her father, are a son, Jerry Archer of Frankfort, a brother, Jerry Stapleton of Ashland, and a grandson, James William Archer.  She was a member of the Tri-County Medical Auxiliary and of the Ladies Golf Association of the Paintsvile Country Club. The funeral will be held Thursday at Mayo Methodist Church with Rev. J. T. Harmon and Rev. Leslie Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Sidgel Burchell, 53, died Friday, June 23, at 1:40 p.m. in the Methodist hospital in Pikeville after a sudden illness. Born July 26, 1913 in Pike County he was the son of Zelta Griffith Burchell and the late Willie Burchell. A retired miner, Burchell had lived at Van Lear. His wife who survives is the former Ethel Fannin Burchell. Additional survivors include three sons Paul Vernon, serving with the US Army in Korea, Venzil of Cincinnati, Ohio andAiger Bart of Loraine, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Janis Thomas of Ashland, Mrs. Shelby Joan Delong of Cincinnati, Ohio, Miss Deloris Rae Burchell and Mrs. Glema Faye Jennings of Van Lear. Mr. Adrian Davis, 82, died suddenly on Tuesday, June 6, at his home on Lick Fork at Hager Hill. Born on August 27, 1884 in Pike County, he was the son of the late John and Rebecca Ratliff Davis. He had lived at Hager Hill for several years and was a minister for the Free Will Baptist Church.  He was a merchant and a member of the Van Lear Lodge 885 F&AM. Survivors include the widow, Mollie E. Davis, two sons Lawrence of Marion, Ohio and Bill of Hager Hill, four daughters, Mrs. Rebecca Blair of Paintsville, Mrs. June Russell of Baytown, Texas, Mrs. Edna Paul of Miami, Florida and Mrs. Garnett Meredith of Phoenix, Arizona. Two half-brothers, Ballard Honaker of Pikeville and Tom Honaker of Portsmouth, Ohio, 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren also survive. Terry A. Jones, age 58 and a former resident of Paintsville, died Wednesday, June 21, at 10:05 p.m. in the Jenkins Clinic after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 24, at 11 a.m. in the Preston Funeral Home Chapel with J. H. Burton and James Wallace officiating. Burial under direction of the Preston Funeral Home took place in the Porter Cemetery at Prestonsburg. Born July 28, 1908 in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the son of Terry Leroy Dalton and Margie Jones.  He had resided in Jenkins for eight years, was a member of the Methodist Church and also a Mason.  He had been employed as supervisor of the Adams Construction Company. His wife, who survives, is the former Mae Newsome. His first wife, Katherine Jones, preceded him in death in November 1964. Other survivors include three sons, Dr. John Jones and Dr. Henry Jones, both of Flatwoods and Terry A. KESTNER, Anthony Wayne
1959-1967
Services were held Sunday, June 18 for Anthony Wayne Kestner, 8, who drowned last Thursday when he accidentally stepped into a deep catch basin while wading below the dam at Dewey Lake. The youngster, son of Lloyd and Leanice Bowen Kestner of Paintsville, had been wading with a friend at the spillway, across the outlet works when he apparently stepped or slipped into some twelve feet of wate in the catch basin. Efforts to revive him were made by Corps of Engineers personnel Raymond Copley and George Lovill, but were unsuccessful. Artificial respiration was continued until the coroner arrived and pronounced the youth dead. Born March 23, 1959, he was a student in the second grade at Paintsville Elementary School. Survivors in addition to his parents and his maternal grandmother. Mrs. Jack Bowen, including a sister, Debra Kaye Kestner, at home. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Paintsville United Baptist Church, with Rev. Nim Sturgill officiating. Burial followed in the Mollett Cemetery at Tomahawk. MCVEY, Hobart Bascom

Hobart Bascom McVey, 67, of Shoals, WV, died this month in a Huntington hospital after a brief illness. Mr. McVey was a Paintsville resident for nearly eighteen years during the construction of Dewey Dam and Reservoir and was known well in this area. He had recently retired from the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Huntington District, after 30 years of employment and had been at work on the Fishtrap Dam near Pikeville until he became ill several months ago. He was born March 23, 1900 at Wayne, West Virginia, attended Berne College and studied engineering at West Virginia University.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. McVey was survived by five sisters.  Another preceded him in death two years ago. Services were held at the funeral home in Huntington and burial followed at Woodmore Cemetery. Services for James Cyrus Preston, 38, of Paintsville, were held Friday, June 30, in the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home. Mr. Preston, who as assistant manager of East Kentucky News Company, apparently suffered a fatal heart attack while enroute home from a visit with relatives. His car plunged over an embank- ment at the Rt. 23 entrance to Paintsville last Tuesday evening and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Paintsville Clinic. Born November 25, 1928, at Thealka, he was the son of Cyrus and Belle Cunningham Preston and had been a resident of Paints- ville for 15 years at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Tilda Ann Stambaugh Preston, to whom he was married in November, 1952, at Van Lear. O. I. Williams, C. J. Sparks and F. F. Rigsby officiated at the services.  Burial followed in the Preston Cemetery at Thelma. Pallbearers were Herman Castle, Paul Ratliff, Ray E. Preston, Tom R. King, Ray T. Preston and Jack Lewis. John Stambaugh, 56, died Saturday June 3, at 12:05 p.m. in the Cincinnati V.A. Hospital after an extended illness. Born Decenber 1, 1911 at Tutor Key he was the son of R.H. and Violet Belcher Stambaugh. A resident of Amelia, Ohio for the past six years, he was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church.  He had been employed as a mechanic.  His wife, who survives, is the former Francis Lyons. They were married in Paintsville on January 26, 1946. Other survivors include two daughters. Nancy marie Stambaugh and Connie Elizabeth Stambaugh both at home. Wayne M. Stapleton, 49, died Thursday, June 22, at 4 a.m. in the veterans Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio following an extended illness. Born October 30, 1917 in Ashland. He was the son of Rhoda Cochran Stapleton who survives and the late Clayton Stapleton. He was a resident of Newport, but formerly had lived at Win.  He had served with the United States Army during World War II for seven years and was presented with several medals including the Purple Heart. His surviving wife is the former Viola Bryant. Other survivors include three sons, Otto Morris, Wayne, Jr. and Woodrow all of Newport, a daughter, Mary Christine Stapleton also of Newport, two brothers, Poe Stapleton and Ted Stapleton both of Win and a sister, Mrs. Sherwood Williams of Flat Gap. A grandson also survives. The funeral was conducted Sunday, July 25, at 11 a.m. at the United Baptist Church at Win with L. Pelphrey and Scott Williams officiating. Funeral services were held at her daughter’s home on Saturday, July 1, 1:00 p.m. with Lonza Reed, Prater Blair and Elzie Banks officiating.  Burial followed in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Born November 26, 1878, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of Ben and Josephine Williams; she had been a lifelong resident of Oil Springs. She was a member of the United Baptist Church and was married to Theodore Williams, who passed away in August 1952. Survivors include four sons and four daughters Charlie of Mt. Sterling, Ohio, Polk and Lewis of Oil Springs, Ben of Ashland, Mrs. Virginia Patrick of Ashland, Jesie Mae Williams and Adda Blair both of Oil Springs and Norcie Stapleton of Collista. Born in Johnson County on July 16, 1894, he was the son of the late Sol and Susan Lemaster Blevins. He had been a resident of Jackson for the last 15 years.  He was a farmer and a member of the United Baptist Church. Joe Boyd, 73, of Thelma, died June 30 at the Paintsville Hospital. A retired employee of the C&O Railway Company, he was born March 23, 1894, at Matewan, West Virginia, the son of Mose and Alice George Boyd Blessing.  He had been a Thelma resident for 60 years. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Meek Boyd, to whom he was married in August 1916, at Whitehouse. Also surviving are three sons:  Hansford of Columbus, Ohio; Joe Jr. of Thelma, and James Robert of Huntington; and three daughters: Cleo Castle of West Van Lear, Mary Alice Fraley of Wooster, Ohio, and Rebel Gutherie of Carlinsville, Illinois. A brother, Lon Fitzpatrick of Clifton, W.Va., survives, as do two half-brothers, Charlie Blessing of Whitehouse and Frank Blessing of West Van Lear. Mr. Boyd’s grandsons served as pallbearers. Joe Burton, 82, of River, died Saturday, July 1, at the Paintsville Hospital. He had been in ill health for a year prior to his death. Born May 15, 1886 at Blaine, he was the son of Pierce and Mary Pack Burton.  He had been residing at River for the past seven years. He was a member of the Church of God. Survivors include two brothers, Andrew Burton of Cattletsburg and Frank Burton of Nippa, a sister, Thursa Preston of River, and a half-sister, Viola Hite of Cattletsburg. Services were held Tuesday at the Mouth of Rush Freewill Babptist Church, with Millard Vanhoose officiating. Burial followed in the Clark Castle Cemetery at Sycamore. Arnold Butcher, 38, died Saturday, July 15, in the Paintsville Hospitl, of  self inflicted gunshot wound. Born June 23, 1929, the son of Ida Bowling Butcher and the late Melvin Butcher, he had been a lifelong resident of Van Lear and was employed as a miner. Additional survivors are three sisters.  Miss Minnie Butcher of Van Lear and Mrs. Maggie Moore and Mrs. Virginia Triplett, both of Wabash, Ind.; seven brothers, Granville, Elmer, Allen, Everett and Ira Butcher, all of Van Lear.  Bernard Butcher of Wabash, Ind. and Hubert Butcher of Wittensville. Funeral services were held Monday, July 17 in the Miller Creek School House with Elzie Bnks and John Crum officiating. CARTER, Lula (Collins)
1898-1967
Mrs. Lula Carter, former resident of Johnson County, and the widow of Grover Carter, died unexpectedly at her home in Rockhold, Kentucky on July 8. She was the daughter of the late Lydia Davidson and Bud Collins and was born February 18,1898 in Johnson County. Mrs. Carter had beeb a member of the Church of God for many years at Woodbine and a faithful servant of the church. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Jeff Coleman, 2090 Auburn Ave., Dayton, Ohio, a brother John Crate Collins, a grandniece, who Mrs. Carter raised, Mrs. Ernest Wagoner, and three children of Indianapolis, Indiana; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Minerva Franklin, 91, a lifelong resident of Johnson County, died July 2 at the Paintsville Hospital. Born at Van Lear on March 25, 1876, she was the daughter of Tom and Nancy Sammons Franklin.  For the past several years she had been a resident of Concord. She was a member of the United Baptist Church. Her husband, Mack Franklin, died in 1954. Survivors include four sons and four daughters: Henry and Freddie Franklin of Marion, Ohio, Estill, of Paintsville, Floyd, of River, Ila Tuff of Ironton, Ohio, Myrtle VanHoose of Russell, Nancy Welch of Concord and Angie of Indianapolis. Also surviving are two brothers, Tom Sammons of Meally and Martin Sammons of Thelma and a sister, Martha Davis of Huntington. The funeral was held at 2p.m. Tuesday, July 4, at the Concord United Baptist Church, with Buell Ferguson and Tom Sammons officiating.  Burial followed in the Franklin Cemetery at Concord. Hampton Frazier, 73, died Friday, July 21, 9:30 a.m. at the Paintsville Hospital after an illness of six months. Mr. Hubert Clayton (Butch) Gambill Jr., 22, died July 1 in Los Angeles, California. Born July 23, 1944 in Stuttgart, Arizona, he was the son of Hubert C. Gambill, Sr. of Paintsville and Mrs. Deloris Murphy of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also surviving are his Step-mother, Leona Gambill of Paintsville; one brother, Michael Gambill of Paintsville; two sisters Mrs. Virginia Grant and Mrs. Katherine Horn of Huntington, WVa: a step- brother, James Payne of Allen: and the paternal grandmother.  Mrs. L.C. Gambill of Paintsville. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 8, 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Preston Funeral Home with Cline Salyer officiating. GOBLE, John
1885-1967
Services were held Sunday, July 30, for John Goble S?., of West Van Lear, who died July 29 at the Paintsville Hospital after an illness of three months. Born December 18, 1885, in Martin County, he lived at West Van Lear at the time of his death, and had been a resident there for the past 30 years. He was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was the son of John Goble, Sr. and Loucrecy Harless Goble. Survivors include his second wife, Rital McFaddin Goble, to whom he was married in 1933. His first wife preceded him in death in 1931. Two sons also survive. They are Russel Goble of Wilmington, Delaware and Worth Goble of West Van Lear. Four daughters also survive, including Mrs. Deward Price and Mrs. Beecher Wells of West Van Lear, Mrs. John B. Kennard of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. Paul Griffith of Abbeville, South Carolina. Mr. Goble also is survived by 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Eddie Jane Cornette of Prestonsburg and Mrs. Ballard Setser of Endicott survive. Services were held in the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home, with Larry Manning the officiating minister. Mrs. H. F. Griffith, 75, died Friday, July 21, 11:30 p.m. in the St Clair's Medical Clinic after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, July 24, 1:30 p.m. in the First Church of God at Lowmansville with Tommy Reynolds, Woodrow Frisby and Edgar Hullett officiating. Burial was held in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Born in Lawrence County September 28, 1891, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Seagraves Deboard, she had been a lifelong resident of Lomansville and a member of the Church of God. She was married to Henry F. griffith, who preceded her in death on march 19, 1951. Survivors include two sons, Ora Griffith of dayton, Ohio and Rev Scott Griffith of Clearfield, nine grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs Dicie Breedin of Delbarton, W. George (Brother) Hall, 58, of Kings Addition in Paintsville, died Monday, July 31, at Paintsville Hospital after an extended illness. A life-long resident of the county, he was the son of Lucy Wells Hall and the late Alonzo Hall. He was a disabled miner and had been in poor health for several years. Mr. Hall was a member of the Church of Christ. His wife, Nannie Gilliam Hall, survives. Also surviving are five sons; Robert of Salyersville; Doug, of Van Lear; Tommy of Dayton, Ohio, and William, at home. Five daughters survive, including Betty Broomhall, Jackie Boyd, Patsy Morgan and Peggy Kain, all of Dayton, and Joyce Hall at home. Two sisters, Virginia Ward and Imogene Fraley, both of Paintsville, and eleven grandchildren also survive. Services were held Wednesday, August 2, at the Meally Church of Christ, with Hershel Short and Edgar Preston officiating. Burial followed in the Hall Cemetery in King Addition. Mrs. Hassie Hall, 59, died on Tuesday, July 4, enroute to Paintsville Hospital, after a sudden illness. Born in Floyd County on June 10, 1908, the daughter of the late James and Jane Wilson Hall, she had been a resident of Van Lear for the past three years. She was the wife of the late Elza Hall. Survivors include four sons, Paul and Larry Burns Hall of Olla, Maryland, William Preston and Daniel Monroe Hall of Ellicott, Maryland, six daughters; Mrs. Mary Jennylee Hall of West Virginia, Mrs. Doris June Murphy of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Anna Laurine Sheldon of Hilliard, Ohio, Mrs. Alice Jane Hall, Miss Kathy Georgene Hall, and Miss Debra Francis Hall, all of Van Lear. A brother, Albert Ward of Florida and two sisters, Anna Hopson of Prestonsburg and Lillian Hitchcock of Van Lear also survive. The funeral will be held on Friday, July 7, at 1:00 p.m. in the Auxier Methodist Church with Cecil Sherman officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery at Auxier. Buddy Jenkins, 29, died at the home of Sarah Spriggs, Saturday, July 22, after an illness of several months. Born in Floyd County on January 12, 1938, he was the son of Ernie and Thelma Francis Jenkins. He was a resident of Red Bush at the time of his death and a member of the Pentecostal Church. Mrs. Tennie Long, 70, died in a local hospital on Saturday, July 1, 11:45 p.m. after an illness of several months. Born at Oil Springs on March 8, 1897, she was the daughter of James H. and Arminta Winn Spradlin. A lifelong resident of Oil Springs, she was married to Lindsey Long, who preceded her in death on January 6, 1959. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church. She is survived by one son and five daughters, Joe Long of Louisville, Mrs. Wayne Blanton of Dwale, Mrs. Flaudie Risner, Mrs. Kite Blevins, and Mrs. Hearl Colvin all of Louisville and Mrs. Herschell Conley of Oil Springs. Edna “Sis” Mahan, 72, died on Sunday, July 23, 6p.m. in a local nursing home after an extended illness. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the Third Street Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Claude Preston presiding. Burial was held in the Turner Branch Cemetery in Paintsville under the direction of the Jones Preston Funeral Home. Born in Johnson County on November 19, 1894, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Jeanette Fitch Dills and had been a lifelong resident of Johnson County.  She was also a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Her husband was the late Arthur Mahan. Funeral services were held today, Wednesday, July 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of God at Martha, Kentucky, with Homer Evans and Herb Phillips officiating. Burial was held in the Sturgill Cemetery at Martha, under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home. Born in Johnson County of December 12, 1881, he was the son of the late Sylvanis and Sally Skaggs Sparks and had been a lifelong resident of Flat Gap. Taylor Stambaugh, 68, died Saturday, July 15, 3:30 p.m. at the Paintsville Clinic, following a brief illness. Born October 16, 1900, he was the son of Sam and Clara Sublett Stambaugh. A retired miner, he was a life-long resident of Sitka and a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Brown Stambaugh, four sons, Miniard, Sam and Don, all of Sitka, and Eugene of Hobbs New Mexico, two daughters, Rudell Stambaugh of Cincinnati, Ohio and Paulene Jones of Sitka. Two brothers Lawrence and George of Sitka and one sister Mrs. George Castle of Staffordsville also survive. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 18, 2:00 p.m. in the Sitka Pennicastal Church of Christ with Bruce Daniels officiating. A retired miner, he had been a resident of Sitka for the past 16 years. Survivors include his wife the former Estella Smith, two sons Johnnie of Sitka and Sam of Dayton, Ohio, five daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Marie Dorton of Logan W.Va. Mrs. Mary McKenzie and Miss Nancy Staniford of Sitka.  Mrs. Deloris Doston of Jacksonville, Florida and Mrs. Cynthia Walden of Indiana. Two brothers Grant Staniford of Boons Camp and Gee Staniford at Ortonville, Michigan, three sisters Mrs. Thelma Click of ? Mrs. Ada Music of Wahbash, Indian and Mrs. Jenny Collins of Sunbury, Ohio also survive. TITLOW, William B.

Rites were held Sunday, July 30 for the two Johnson County residents who died in a mine explosion last week at Princess Elkhorn’s No 1 mine at David. Services were held at 2.pm Sunday, in the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home, for William B. Titlow, 56, of West Van Lear. Born at Kingston, W. Va., he was the son of Jacob and Linnie Waugh Titlow. He was a mine forman for Princess, and he had lived at West Van Lear for the past 25 years. Survivors include his wife, Anna Robinson Titlow, and three sons; Bill Titlow Jr. Dayton, Ohio, Douglas Mickey Titlow of Paintsville, and Richard Titlow of West Van Lear. Three Grandchildren also survive. Three brothers and five sisters survive. They are Charles Titlow of Mason, Ohio, Harry Titlow of Estill, Kentucky, Gusta Martin of Estill. Mrs. Josephine Webb, 72, died on Monday, July 31, 9:00 a.m. at a local hospital after an illness of several months. Born in Johnson County on October 4, 1894, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Josephine Williams. She was a resident of Red Bush Kentucky most of her life and was affiliated with the Methodist Church. Burial was held in the Young Cemetery at Lowmansville, under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home. Born at Flat Gap on August 7, 1894, she was the daughter of William B. and Leota Barker Skaggs. Eugene Daniel, Jr., 56, a resident of Paintsville, died Sunday, August 27, at the Crest Haven  Nursing Home after an illness of several months. Born October 29, 1910 in Johnson County, he was the son of Eugene Daniel and the late Anna Preston Daniel. He had been an automobile dealer in Paintsville.  He was a member of the VFW, and had served in the U.S. Coast Guard. His wife, Grace Collins Daniel, preceded him in death in 1958. Two daughters survive, Mrs. Carl Hail and Kay Daniel, both of Whitesburg. Also surviving is a brother, Jesse Paris Daniel, of Cincinnati. Services were held Tuesday, August 29, in the chapel of the Paintsville Funeral Home, with Rev. L. M. Rogers officiating. Burial followed in the Collins Cemetery at Whitesburg. Mrs. Lenora Davis, 85, passed away August 30 at the King’s Daughter’s Hospital, Ashland, following a brief illness. Mrs. Davis was born in Wellston, Ohio, a daughter of Evan and Lydia Queen Davis and moved with her husband Wm. R. Davis, to Thealka in 1908.  Mr. Davis was manager of the company stores of North East Coal Co. for many years.  Mr. Davis and one daughter, Mrs. Nadine Turner preceded her in death. Clifford Fairchild, 50, of Paintsville, who died August 23, was given military graveside rites at the time of the interment in the Keaton Cemetery at Davis Branch on Saturday, August 26. Born July 3, 1917, he was the son of James B and Martha Baldridge Fairchild of Hager Hill. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Montgomery Fairchild. Survivors also include three brothers.  W. Harriet Hammond, 90, died Friday, August 25, at 3:50 p.m. in her home after an extended illness. The daughter of the late Cummings and Priscilla Bailey Porter, she was born in Magoffin County on May 11, 1877 and resided on Kirk St., Paintsville, at the time of death. She was affiliated with the Pentecostal Church. Her husband Clay Hammond died in 1926. Survivors include three sons; Raleigh and Morris, both of Paintsville and Ordis of Wheelersburg, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Cecil Blair and Mrs. Clarence Johnson, both of Paintsville. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. William Herbert Lemaster, 60, died suddenly on Wednesday morning, August 23. Born in Silverhill, Ky. on June 17, 1907 and the son of Stephen and Mary Jane Bayes Lemaster, he was a thirty seven year resident of West Prestonburg. He was employed for thirty-eight years by the Kentucky and West Virginia Gas Company. Survivors include his wife, Beulah Blanton Lemaster, one son, Paul, of Allen; one daughter, Mrs. Millard Hughes, Jr., of Prestonburg; and three grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Everett Lemaster of Volga, four daughters, Mrs. Hester Trimble, of Dwale, Mrs. Alice Williams, of Oil Springs, Mrs. Sarah Gillem, of Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Fannie Blanton, of Dwale. Lewis C. Lyon, 71, died Sunday, August 27, after a brief illness. Born November 24, 1895, at Barn Rock, he was the son of Edward and Sarah Skaggs Lyon. He had been a lifelong resident of Flat Gap. Survivors include two daughters; Mrs. Russell Griffith of Flat Gap and Beatrice Singree of Canton, Ohio. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Sparks, 63, died on Thursday, August 31, at 7:50 a.m. at her home on Boyd St. after a brief illness. She was born in Johnson County of October 30, 1903, the daughter of the late Frank and Lillia Tackett Johnson.  She is a member of the Barnetts Creek United Bapt Church and L.A. of B.R.T. Survirors include her husband, J.O. Sparks, one daughter, Mrs. Dora Mae Roberts, of Paintsville and three granchildren.  Also surviving is one brother, Marlin Johnson of Staffordsville. Ottis Wiley, 51, died on Monday, August 7, 7:30 a.m. in the C & O Hospital at Huntington, W. VA. He had been in ill health for the past year. Born in Floyd County on July 11, 1916 the son of Dave and Virgie Ward Wiley, he made his residents at Whitehouse at the time of his death. He was employed by the Co & O Railroad and was a minister with the Enterprise Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, the former Ollie Booth; two sons, Ottis Wiley, Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; and James David Wiley of Whitehouse; on step-daughter, Janet Raye Tackett of Whitehouse and six grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Overton Wiley of Prestonsburg, Paul Wiley of Whitehouse; and Everett Wiley of Homer, Michigan. Elder W. H. Caudill, 72, died tuesday September 5, 5:15A.m. in a local hospital after an illness of six months. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday September 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the Concord United Baptist Church with Elder Nick Sturgill, Elder W. T Dalton and Elder Elzie Banks officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery in Concord under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Born in Johnson County on October 18, 1891 he was the son of Ben and Cynthia Ward Caudill he had lived in Thealka all his life. He had been a minister of the United baptist church since 1939 and was a farmer and blacksmith. Lizzie Estep Fairchild, 95, died on Friday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m. after an extended illness. The daughter of the late John and Sally Marshall Estepp , she was born in Johnson County on January 25, 1872 and was a resident of Paintsville at the time of her death.  She was a lifelong member of the Rock House Free Will Baptist Church. She was married to Joe Fairchild who preceded her in death in 1949. Three sons survive, Son of Paintsville and Troy and Lon both of Staffordsville. Three daughters also survive, Mrs. Minnie Johnson of Hazard, Mrs. Lester Adams of Paintsville, and Mrs. Fred Pelphrey of Fairborn, Ohio. Two daughters, Ruth Walters and Alka Fairchild preceded her in death. Also surviving are 31 grandchildren, 91 great grandchildren and 30 great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 17, in the Rock House Free Will Baptist Church.  Staffordsville with Scott Castle, Claude Preston, John Frank Ratliff and Millard VanHoose officiating.  The Tom’s Creek Quarter and the Staffordsville Quartet provided the singing. Quill Harmon, 58, died on Tuesday, September 26, at 8:15 p.m. in a local hospital after an extended illness. Born in Floyd County on January 30, 1909, he was the son of the late William and Lucy Garret Harmon and was a resident of Paintsville most of his life. Mr. Harmon was a retired custodian of the Citizens National Bank and was affiliated with the First Methodist Church. His wife Aretta Stapleton Harmon survives. Other survivors include three sons, Quill Richard of Urbana, Ohio; Thomas D. and Charles L. of Paintsville. Five daughters also survive, MRs. Gene Thompson of Ironton, Ohio; Mrs. James Skiles of Pikeville, Mrs. Higgy Burchett, Mrs. Tollie Bayes, and Mrs. Wayne Griffith, all of Paintsville. A retired miner, he was born in Floyd County on November 4, 1899, the son of the late Sam and Alice Rice Hyden. He had made his home in Hager Hill for the past several years and was a member of the East Point Church of Christ. Mrs. Ethel Newlin, 51, died suddenly on Monday, September 11, in the Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.  Born in Johnson County, she was the daughter of Frank Davis, deceased, and Eulah Davis. She was a resident of Cleveland, Ohio at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband, Rex Newlin.  Other surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Effie Wadell, of New Castle, Ind., Mrs. Mildred Spencer of Paintsville, Mrs. Ewlyn Rasnick and Mrs. Nellie Cantrell, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Patsy Esterling of Louisa; four brothers also survive,  Miles, Elmer, and Douglas, all of Paintsville, and Jack of Inez. Dies September 7.  Ida O'Bryan, 65, died on Thursday, September 7, at 9:15 p.m. in her home. Born on March 29, 1902, in Magoffin County, she was the daughter of the late C. W. and Elizabeth Jenkins Williams and was a resident of Meally at the time of her death.  Survivors include her husband Alonzo O'Bryan, whom she married on June 5, 1937.  Five brothers also survive, Lloyd of Staffordsville, Frank and Robert of Meally, Lundy of Columbus, Ohio, and Russell of Fairborn, Ohio.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 10, at 11 a.m. in the United Baptist Church, Staffordsville, with Florida Lyons and O. Alva Rice, 69, was dead on arrival at the Paintsville Hospital on Wednesday, September 6, at 8 p.m. Born in Johnson County on November 18, 1897, he was the son of the late Green and Cora Davis Rice. A retired school teacher, Mr. Rice resided in Oil Springs, most of his life interested in local history, he occasionally contributed articles about such areas such as Hell's Half Acre and Mud Lick Falls to the Paintsville Herald. He was married to Erma Maxine Rice who preceded him in death on August 15, 1966. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Alice Conley, of Oil Springs, Mrs. Kaye Alley and Mrs. Betty Young, both of Lexington. Other survivors include five brothers, Frank of Orlando, Florida, Grant of Columbus, OH, Charlie of Salyersville, Roy of Dayton, OH and Johnny of Oil Springs; two sisters, also survive, Mrs. Erie Wheeler and Mrs. Rouie Salyers, both of Oil Springs. Three Grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 9 at 9:30 p.m. in the Methodist Church of Oil Springs, with the Revs. James Wallace and Frank Spillman officiating. Jim Smith, 76, died on Saturday, September 30, at 4:15 in a local hospital after an extended illness. A retired miner, he was born in Lawrence County on February 26, 1891 and was the son of the late Curtis and Abbie Wheeler Smith. He was a resident of Green Town most of his life. He was afflitiated with the Thealka Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Laney Smith. Other survivors include four sons, George and Bill of  Paintsville, John Henry of Plymouth, Ben of West Van Lear; five daughters also survive, Ruth Castle of Thealka, May Laney of White house, Virgie Gibson of Mansfield, Ohio, Thirty-two grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, also, survive. A retired coal miner, he was born October 15, 1878, in Johnson County, a son of the late Reace and Renda Blair Watkins. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Minerva (Hall) Watkins; three daughters, Mrs, Alvie Robinson of Rittman, Mrs. Bruce Jewell, of Huntington, W. Va., and Mrs. Brady Pauley, of Wayne W. Va., a son, James Watkins, of Huntington, and 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. The Funeral was conducted at his former home in Wayne, W. Grant White, 86, died Tuesday, September 19, 6:oo a.m. in the local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 21, 2:00 p.m. in the Chestnut Grove Enterprise Baptist Church with Ellis Hamilton officiating.  Burial will follow in the family cemetery with the Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr. White was born in Johnson County on February 10, 1881, the son of the late John and Margaret McKenzie white.  He had been a resident of Lowmansville for the past several years and was a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church. He was married to the late Jessie White, who preceded him in death in 1948.  He was a farmer and a carpenter. WILLIAMS, Cyrus Coke
1911-1967
Services were held Tuesday at 3p.m. for one of Johnson County’s best-known businessmen, Cyrus Coke Williams, who died Sunday at his home in Paintsville of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Williams, 56, was the co=owner of Redd & Williams Insurance and Real Estate Company, and was a member o the board of directors of the First National Bank of Paintsville.  Active in Republican politics, he also had served as an election commissioner and in other political post. He previously had been a partner in the wells & Williams Insurance Agency selling his interest in that firm in 1954 and forming a new agency with Edd Redd that same year.  The company has since grown into one of the major agencies in Eastern Kentucky recently expanding into real estate operations. He had been a director of the First National Bank since 1960. Born March 21, 1911, he was the son of Marion and Jennie Vaughan Williams.  A member of the First Methodist Church, he also was a Mason and a member of the Paintsville, Kiwanis Club. His wife, Viola Miller Williams is chief accountant for the Johnson County school system. Survivors include a son, Harry Davis Williams, who is an attorney with a law firm in Pikeville, and a daughter, Jean Marion Williams at home. Also surviving are two brothers, John, Fred Williams, a vice president with Ashland Oil & Refining Company, and Dr. J. S Williams, of Nicholasville; and two sisters, Mrs. Cova Bunyard of Detroit, Michigan, and Mrs. Hazel Davis of Paintsville. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 26, at the First Methodist Church in Paintsville, with Rev. J. H. Burton officiating.  Burial followed in the Davis Cemetery in Paintsville. George Patton Cantrell, 72, was dead on arrival at a local hospital after a heart attach on Thursday, December 28, at 3:30 a.m. He had been ill for four weeks. Born in Johnson County on March 20, 1895, and  a lifelong resident of Flat Gap, he was the son of Hadden and Mary Frazier Cantrell. He was a retired state highway employee. His wife, Sarah Jane Estep Cantrell, survives. Four sons, Earl of Magnette Springs, OH, Billy, Clyde, and Eugene, all of Delaware, OH; five daughters, Opal Williams of Delaware, OH, Oshell Wheeler of Crotton, OH, Mildred Fay of Delaware, OH, Marie Ross of Ashland, and Phyllis Axbell of Delaware, OH survive. Twenty-two grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive. Other survivors include two brothers, John K. Campbell and Jim Campbell, both of Flat Gap and two sisters, Golda Estep of Allen and Frankie Spears of Sunbury, OH. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 30 at 2 p.m. in the Bethel United Baptist Church at Flat Gap, with Elders Arnold Reed and J. T. Bailey officiating. Born in Floyd County on October 15, 1887, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Lydia Prater Spradlin and was a member of the Georges Creek United Baptist Church. Former Johnson County resident Mable (Taylor) Crutcher; 51, died December 28, in a Lexington hospital after a brief illness. Survivors include her husband, Rufus Crutcher; her mother, Mrs. Bascom Taylor of Nippa; two sisters, Mrs. Daley Caudill of Leander, Mrs. Theodore Daniel of Nippa; two brothers, Earl Taylor of Springfield, OH, Curtis Taylor of Blandford, England; five daughters, Mrs. Elmer Sebastin, Mrs. George Littrell, Mrs. Joe Barnett and Mrs. Jerry Cochran, all of Springfield, OH, and Mrs. Richard Pressnell of Columbus, OH and seven grandchildren. Rev. Meade of Springfield, OH and Rev. Willard Wilcox of Lexington were the officiating ministers. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Whitelock Funeral Home. DAWSON, James L.
1884-1967
James L. Dawson, 83, died on Thursday, December 28, at 11:30 p.m. in a local hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Grundy, WV on August 11, 1884, he was the son of the late John and Matilda Sturgill Dawson and was a resident of Van Lear for several years. A retired miner, he was a member of Enterprise Baptist church. His wife, Ressie Bowling Dawson survives. Other survivors include five sons, Ocal A. Audie and James Dawson, Jr., both of Van Lear, Earsel Dawson of Stockdale, CA, Ray Dawson of Arleta, CA and Shirley Dawson of Van Nuys, Ca; three daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Honeycutt of South Point, OH, Mrs. Minnie Potters of Ashland, and Mrs. Ethel Honeycutt of Van Lear, twenty eight grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren also survive. One brother, Armstrong Dawson of Morehead, also survives. Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 31, at 11:30 a.m. in the Van Lear Freewill Baptist Church with Ellis Hamilton and Earl Ratliff officiating. HOPSON, Sammie
1913-1967
Sammie Hobson, 54, died Thursday, December 21, at 4:30 p.m. as a result of a car- train accident at a railway crossing in Boyd County. Born in Johnson County on January 1, 1913 and a lifelong resident of Van Lear, he was the son of the late Millard Hobson and Mintie Burcher Hobson, living. He was employed as an iron worker with Schurman Construction Company. His wife, Ellie Nunnery Hobson, survives. Three sons, Larry Hobson of Van Lear, Gary Lee Hobson of Auxier, and Jack Ray Hobson also survive. One daughter, Mrs. Delores Preston of Paintsville, also survives. Five grandchildren also survive. Other survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn McKenzie and Mrs. Irene Kugaczski, both of Dayton, OH, Mrs. Willadean Ellis of Macon, GA, and Mrs. Shirley Blanton of West Liberty. Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the Philadelphia Church of Christ, with Cecil Sherman officiating. Burial followed in the Hobson Cemetery at Van Lear, under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home. MILLER, Frank
1890-1967
Frank Miller, 77, died Friday, December 29 at 8:45 p.m. in a local hospital, after an illness of one year. Funeral services were held Monday, January 1 at 10 a.m. in the Boons Camp Freewill Baptist church with Fred Rowland officiating. Burial followed in the Williamson Cemetery at Tomahawk, under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home. Born at Tomahawk on October 31, 1890, he was the son of John and Sarah Dollarhide Miller. He was a retired coroner of Martin County, holding this position for twenty-four years. He had been a resident of Whitehouse for the past year. MOLLETT, Mary (Salmons)
1896-1967
Rites were held this month in Martin County for a former Johnson Countian, Mrs. Mary Salmons Mollett, who died at the Paintsville Clinic after a brief illness. Mrs. Mollett, the daughter of David M. and Rebecca Ward Salmons, was born on Rich Hollow in Johnson County in April 1896. Her parents moved to Martin County in 1902. In 1916 she was married to James Mollett. The couple had eight sons and two daughters. She was a member of Trace Fork Church, Tri-State Zion United Baptist. Survivors include her husband and nine children, Granville of Detroit, David of Feds Creek, Edd, of Columbus, OH, Paul of Springfield, OH, Joseph, Elzie and Oscar of Tomahawk, Mrs. Alta Mills of Tomahawk and Mrs. Alverta Hensley of Whitehouse. Also surviving are several brothers and sisters. Elders Jim Preece, Nim Sturgill, Earl Muncy, Oscar Scott and Tom Sammons officiated at the services, as requested by Mrs. Mollett. PRESTON, George
1884-1967
George Preston, age 82, died Wednesday, December 21, at 4:45 a.m. in the King's Daughters Hospital in Ashland following a brief illness. Born March 12, 1884 at Meally, he was the son of Sant and Mary Preston. He had been a resident of Ash- land for 28 years and was a mem- ber of the United Baptist Church. His wife, Vada Preston, preced- ed him in death on November 22, 1966. Survivors include two sons, Ed- ward and Estill both of Ashland, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Bishop of Ashland and Mrs. Vera Taylor of Paintsville, 14 grand- children and seven great grand- children. Funeral services were held Fri- day, December 23, at 2:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Preston Fun- eral Home with Elzie Banks of- ficiating. THOMPSON, Julie (Castle)
1883-1967
Mrs. Julie Castle Thompson, 84, died Tuesday, December 19, 10 p.m. in a local hospital after an illness of five weeks. Born at Lowmansville on June 25, 1883, she was the daughter of Billy and Fannie Bowens Lyons. She had lived at Lowmansville all her life and was a member of the United Baptist church. Survivors include her husband, Matt Thompson; one son, Roy Castle of Columbus, OH; two daughters, Mae Green of Lowmansville and Nora Puckett of East Point; twelve grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Dora Preston, Miamisburg, OH, and Rosie Whitt of Feds Creek, two brothers, Abraham Lyons of Thealka and Willie Lyons of Prestonsburg. Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 22 in the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home with Charles Stapleton, Scott Castle and Don Fraley officiating. WARD, Grant
1891-1968
Grant Ward, 76, died Thursday, December 28 4:30 a.m. in the Park View Hospital at Fort Wayne, IN, after an illness of nine months. Born at Barnetts Creek on November 19, 1891, he was the son of Daniel and Mary Hitchcock Ward. He had been a resident of Fort Wayne, IN for the last five years and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, the former Arizona Fairchild, whom he married at Prestonsburg in 1931. Also surviving are six sons, Anderson, Danny H., Paul E. James G., and Ronald L. Ward, all of Fort Wayne, IN and Tansy Ward of Lima, OH; three daughters, Pasty Rosterfer of Wopakonsta, OH, Geneva Marshall of Lima, OH and Janet Sue Platt of fort Wayne, IN; and nine grandchildren. Two brothers, Harrison Ward of Washington, D. C. and Jess Ward of Red Jacket, WV also survive. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 31 in the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home with Scott Castle officiating. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery at Staffordsville under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home. Paintsville Herald, Wednesday, January 3, 1968
