BALDRIDGE, Thomas
1923-1968
Thomas Baldridge, 45, died Saturday, April 6, in General Hospital at
Indianapolis, IN, after a brief illness. A painter by occupation, he
was born in Johnson County on March 2, 1923, the son of Florence
Blevins Baldridge and the late Tom Baldridge. He was a resident of West
Van Lear at the time of his death. Survivors including his mother, are
nine brothers and sisters, Claude, Earl, John Edward and Robert
Baldridge of West Van Lear; Glenn Baldridge of Paintsville, William
Bradley Blair of Salineville, OH, Edna Mae Baldridge of West Van Lear,
and Eva Faye Rhoenski of Detroit, MI. Funeral services were held
Wednesday, April 10 in the Paintsville Pentecostal Church of Christ
with Cline Salyer officiating. Burial was held in the family cemetery
at Paintsville under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home.

BOWENS, Isom
1907-1968
Mr. Isom Bowens, 60, died of a heart attack, Wednesday, April 24 at his
home in Boons Camp. Born at Boons Camp on December 16, 1907, he was the
son of Jack Bowens of Boons Camp and the late Viola Spears Bowens. He
was employed as a miner by the Castle Coal Co., of River. His wife, the
former Della Meek, whom he married September 2, 1926 at Inez, survives,
as does a son, Fred Bowens, of Boons Camp. Additional survivors include
five brothers and sisters, Ike Bowens of Blaine, Raymond Bowens and
Mrs. Anna Mae Hayslip of Randall, WA, Mrs. Gertrude Horn of Barnetts
Creek and Mrs. Norman Lou Young of Vermillion, OH, and three
grandchildren. Services were held Friday, April 20, in the Boons Camp
Freewill Baptist church with Charles Stapleton officiating and special
music by the Sitka Quartet. Burial followed in the Butcher Cemetery at
Boons Camp under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home. Paintsville

BROWN, Andrew
1878-1968
Andrew Brown, 90, of Sitka, died April 29 after an illness of two
months. Born December 1, 1878 at Volga, he was the son of the late
Henry and Margaret Baldridge Brown. He was a member of the Methodist
Church. His wife, Christine, preceded him in death in 1958. A sister,
Mrs. Lou Scarberry of Nippa, survives. Services were held May 2, at the
Cannon Chapel Methodist Church with Claude Preston and Charles
Stapleton officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery at Volga.

BROWN, Dorothy (Shepherd)
1913-1968
Barnetts Creek resident Mrs. Dorothy S. Brown, died Saturday, April 13,
in a local hospital after an illness of two days. Born at Hueysville on
April 26, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Johnny and Judy
Vanderpool Shepherd. Her husband, Marion Brown, whom she married in
1936 at Hueysville survives. Additional survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Davis of Hager Hill and Hazel Brown at home;
five sons, Jimmy Lee, Walter and Dewey Brown at home, Ervin Brown of
Winchester, and Clinton Patrick of Barnetts Creek; two stepsons, Troy
Brown of Prestonsburg and Malcom Brown of Cliff; and four
grandchildren. Six brothers and sisters, Roy Shepherd of Hueysville,
Troy Shepherd of Ohio, Mrs. Dona Moore of Pyramid, Mrs. Wicie Castle of
Stockbridge, MI, Mrs. Darcus Jones of Stockbridge, and Miss Mollie
Shepherd of Hueysville, also survive. Funeral services were held
Tuesday, April 16 in the chapel of Preston Funeral Home with Claude
Preston and Ashland Shepherd officiating. Burial was held in the Brown
Cemetery at Barnetts Creek under the direction of the Preston Funeral

BRYANT, Josie Ellen (Lemasters)
1881-1968
Mrs. Josie Ellen Bryant, 86, died Tuesday, April 16 at a local nursing
home after an extended illness. Born at Flat Gap in Johnson County on
September 23, 1881, she was the daughter of the late E. W. and Lydia
McKenzie Lemasters and had been a lifelong resident of Sitka. Her
husband, Jesse Bryant, preceded her in death. Survivors include two
sisters, Malissa Estepp of Milford Center, OH and Victoria Jones of
Paintsville; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren and three
great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, April
18 in the Kerz Enterprise Baptist Church with Reverends Bruce Daniels
and Ellis B. Hamilton officiating. Burial was held in the family
cemetery at Sitka under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home.

Burchett Word was received this week of the death of the five week old
baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Lee Burchett of Degraff, OH,
formerly of Johnson County. The baby died March 10 in a hospital in
Degraff. Additional survivors include the paternal grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Lloyd Williams of Staffordsville. Funeral arrangements are

BURTON, Roscoe
1897-1968
Roscoe Burton, 70, a Van Lear resident and retired miner, died
Thursday, April 4 at his home after a lengthy illness. Born in Martin
County in 1897, he was the son of the late James and Margaret
Montgomery Burton. He had been a resident of Van Lear for the past 35
years. He was a member of the West Van Lear Church of Christ. Surviving
are his wife, Arena Goble Burton, a son, Harold Burton of Van Lear; and
three grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Wiley Burton of
Canton, OH, and two sisters, Mrs. Millie Runyon and Mrs. Lula Runyon of
Barnabus, WV. Services were held Sunday, April 7 at the West Van Lear
Church of Christ with Cecil Sherman officiating. Burial followed in the
Webb Cemetery. The Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of

Chandlerville resident Lowell G. Chandler, 45, died Thursday, April 25
at his home, after a brief illness. Born in Johnson County on June 11,
1922, he was the son of the late Garfield and Madge Davis Chandler. A
brother, V. E. “Red” Chandler, preceded him in death. He is survived by
a sister, Mrs. Mae Daniel of Ashland. Services were held Sunday, April
28 at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home with Cline Salyers officiating.
Burial was held in the Old Hood Cemetery at Davisville under the

CURTIS, Loutisha (Williams)
1881-1968
Funeral services were held Monday, April 29 for Mrs. Loutisha Curtis,
86, who died Saturday, April 27, in Riverside Hospital at Columbus, OH
after an illness of several weeks. The Reverends Lonza Reed, Earl
McKenzie, and J. T. Bailey officiated at the services held in the
Bethel United Baptist Church at Flat Gap. Burial followed in the family
cemetery at Fuget, under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.
Born in Johnson County on June 23, 1881, she was the daughter of the
late James and Nancy Ann Pratt Williams. She lived at Columbus at the
time of her death and was affiliated with the United Baptist Church.
Her husband, Richard M. Curtis, preceded her in death in 1952.
Survivors include three sons, E. H. Curtis of Chillicothe, OH, James M.
Curtis of Centerburg, OH, John W. Curtis of Columbus, OH; three
daughters, Verlissia Rowland of Fuget, Hazel Cantrell of Flat Gap,
Audrey King of Columbus, OH, fourteen grandchildren and 38 great
grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. Symanthia Estep of Grove City, OH, also

DUTTON, Maggie Hazel (Parker)
1912-1968
Maggie Hazel Dutton, 55, died Thursday, April 25 in a local hospital
after an illness of several weeks. A resident of River, she was born in
Johnson County on December 13, 1912, the daughter of the late J. L. and
Clarenda Music Parker. She was a member of the Enterprise Baptist
Church. Survivors include her husband, Landon Dutton; one son, James
Landon Dutton of River; two daughters, Louise and Nelva Jeane Dutton,
both of River. Additional survivors include eight brothers and sisters,
Dave and John Parker of Springfield, OH, Garfield Parker of River, Mrs.
Kirier Cantrell of Wabash, IN, Mrs. Emma Hall of Meally, Mrs. Lenore
Booth of Springfield, OH, W. M. Parker of Drift and Maudie Harrington

World War I veteran Jason Hall, 76, died Monday, April 29, in the
Lexington Veterans Hospital after an extended illness. A farmer, he was
born in Johnson County on November 19, 1891 the son of the late
Calloway and Sarah Hensley Hall. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs.
Alice Green of Chandlersville, Mrs. Emma Lemaster of Sitka, and Mrs.
Malta Davis of Paintsville. Funeral services were held today,
Wednesday, May 1, in the chapel of the Jones- Preston Funeral Home with
Lonza Reed and O. I. Williams officiating. Burial was held in the
Salyers Cemetery at Flat Gap under the direction of the Jones-Preston

KNEECE, Mintie (Rigsby)

Mrs. Mintie Rigsby Kneece, 72, of Williamsport, OH, died Tuesday, April
2 in Berger Hospital. She had been in ill health for several months.
Mrs. Kneece was a native of Magoffin County and was born February 8,
1895, a daughter of Ranzie and Rhoda Howard Estep. Her first husband,
Simon P. Rigsby, preceded her in death. She was a member of the United
Baptist Church. Her husband, Austin Kneece, survives. Also surviving
are ten children: Mrs. Grady (Ver) Hitchcock of Lawton, MI; Mrs. Hade
(Flossie) Fyffe of Silver Hill, OH; Mrs. Manford (Emma) Williams of
Wheelersburg, OH; Lonzie Rigsby of Williamsport, OH; Ranzie Rigsby of
Circleville, OH; winford Rigsby of Williamsport, OH, Miss Clara Ellen
Rigsby of Kingston, OH; Mrs. Mike (Kathleen) Brown of Circleville, OH;
Mrs. Donald (Alice) Evans, of Orient, OH; one sister, Mrs. Lula Gamble
of Kentucky; 31 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Two sons,
Robert and Beecher Rigsby preceded her in death. Funeral services were
held Friday, April 5 in the Mader funeral Home of Circleville, OH with
the Rev. Foster Rigsby and Rev. J. F. Arms officiating. Burial was held

Luther Lemaster, 73, died Saturday, April 13, in a local hospital after
a brief illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 16 in the
Fishtrap United Baptist Church at Manila with Lonza Reed and Charles
Stapleton officiating. Interment followed in the Highland Memorial Park
at Staffordsville under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.
A retired postman, he was born in Johnson County, on January 15, 1895
the son of the late W. H. and Nora Williams Lemaster. Survivors include
his wife, the former Lura Collins McDowell; four sons, Elmo Lemaster of
Ashland, Evan Lemaster of Mt. Sterling, OH, Robert Lemaster of Clifton,
OH and Tennyson Lemaster of Springfield, OH; five daughters, Etta
Evelyn Webb and Nadean Auxier of Manila, Ruth Blanton of Leland, NC, Jo
Holbrook of West Van Lear, and Ann McClure of Clifford; 27

Lonzie Litteral, 54, died suddenly Sunday, April 14, at his home in
Sitka, of a heart attack. An employee of Armco Steel in Ashland, he was
born in Boyd County on May 15, 1913, the son of Julia Litteral and the
late John Litteral. Survivors, in addition to his mother, are his wife,
Francis Vergene Rice Litteral; six sons, Ronald and Donald of East
Chicago, IN, Roger, serving in Vietnam, David at Fort Knox, and Paul
and John at home; three daughters, Mrs. Janie Fairchild of Wabash, IN,
Judy and Janet Litteral of Sitka. Additional survivors include one
brother, John T. Litteral of Ashland, and four sisters, Mrs. W. H.
Ferguson of Red Bush, Mrs. Arnold Reffet, Mrs. John Reffet and Mrs.
Charles Hackworth, all of Ashland. The body was taken from the
Paintsville Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon to the John Stean Funeral
Home in Ashland. The funeral was held today, Wednesday, April 24 in the
Twenty First Street Tabernacle at Ashland, Burial was in the Dixon

MEADE, Walter
1917-1968
Services Held April 17, For Walter Meade, 51, Walter “Skinny” Meade, 51
died Sunday, April 14 in a local hospital of a heart attack. A retired
career man with the U. S. Air Force, he was born at Offutt on February
5, 1917 the son of the late George Meade and Birdie Meade Meek. A
resident of Tutor Key he was affiliated with the Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Irma Marcy Meade; the step-father, Robert
Meek, Sr.; two brothers, Harold Meade of Tutor Key and Raymond Meade of
Williamsport; and one half brother, Robert Meek of Paintsville.
Services were held today, Wednesday, April 17, in the chapel of the
Paintsville Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Spillman officiating.
Internment followed in the family cemetery at Offutt under the

MEEK, Felix
1921-1968
Felix Meek, 47, died Sunday, April 14, in Springfield, OH. Funeral
services were held Wednesday, April 17 in the Chestnut Freewill Baptist
Church with Rev. Hobert Meade officiating. Burial followed in the Meek
Cemetery at Whitehouse under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home.
Born at Whitehouse on April 13, 1921, he was the son of the late
Millard and Della Murry Meek. He had lived at Springfield for the past
17 years. His wife, the former Lydia Wallen, whom he married on May 6,
1941, at Paintsville, survives. Additional survivors include one son,
Larry Meek and one daughter, Mildred Gay Meek, both of Springfield, OH;
five brothers and sisters, Omer Meek and Herbert Meek of Whitehouse,
Phillip Meek of Candler, FL, Oscar Meek of West Van Lear, and Mrs.

Della Peters, 75, died Tuesday, April 9, in a local hospital after a
brief illness. Born in Johnson County on February 19, 1893, she was the
daughter of the late Ashley and Katherine Reed Ward and a member of
Beachmont Baptist Church in Louisville. She was a resident of Hazard at
the time of her death. Her husband, Levi Peters, preceded her in death
in December of 1929. Survivors include one son, Edgar Peters of
Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Mrs. Katherine Eversole of Hazard; and four
grandchildren. Additional survivors include one brother, Dewey Ward of
Grayson; and two sisters, Mrs. Paul B. Hall and Mrs. Carl Fraim both of
Paintsville. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 10 in the
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. C. C. Hall and Rev. Jeff
Burton officiating. Her nephews served as pallbearers, including, Dr.
R. A. Hall, Dr. J. D. Fraim, Jim Hall, Harry McKenzie, Jr., Bob
McKenzie, Doug McKenzie and fried Bill Salyers. Burial followed in the
Ashley Ward Family Cemetery at Concord under the direction of the

Ernest “Big Bud” Sherman, 61, a lifelong resident of Paintsville,
died Saturday, April 27 in Paintsville Hospital after an extended
illness. Born in Johnson County on March 14, 1907, he was the son of
the late H. R. and Loucinda Osborne Sherman. Surviving are his wife,
the former Ethel Poyns, and one daughter, Pvt. Ethel Louise Sherman, of
Fort Sill, OK. Additional survivors include five brothers, and sisters,
Fred Sherman of West Van Lear, Alfred Sherman of Thealka, Ezra Sherman
of Paintsville, Mrs. Maxie Preston of River, and Mrs. Matilda Begley of
Thealka. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 30 in the
Jones-Preston Funeral Home with Rev. Cecil Sherman and Rev. Poole
officiating. Interment followed in the Sherman Family cemetery at Davis
Branch under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home.

Retired coal miner, Samuel Tackett, 84, died Friday, April 19 in a
local hospital after a brief illness. Born in Johnson County on April
15, 1884, he was the son of the late Andy and Malinda Jane Stafford
Tackett and was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include his
wife, Cora Tackett; three sons, Frank and Andy Tackett, of Whitehouse
and Dewey Tackett of Waverly, OH, two daughters, Mrs. Mary
Puckett of Paintsville and Mrs. Esta Gibson of Piketon, OH. Additional
survivors include two brothers, Bud Tackett of Staffordsville and Mose
Tackett of Oil Springs; and two sisters, Mrs. Lillie Richie of Piketon,
OH, and Mrs. Bessie Blanton of Wheelersburg, OH. Funeral services were
held Sunday, April 21, in the Hammond Freewill Baptist Church with
Charlie Lemaster, Charles Stapleton, Scott Castle and Vern Conley
officiating. Interment followed in the family cemetery at

Betty L. Wallin, 32, was killed instantly as a result of an automobile
accident on Saturday, April 20 in Hollywood, CA. The daughter of James
and Drexel Franklin Wallin, she was born at Red Bush on January 20,
1936 and was employed as a clerk in Hollywood at the time of her death.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, Retta Sue
Schrebler of Garden Grove, CA and Nancy Lee Ford of North Hollywood,
CA. Services were held today, Wednesday, April 24 in the chapel of the
Paintsville Funeral Home with Ellis Hamilton officiating. Burial was

Retired farmer Floyd Williams, Sr., 81, died Tuesday, March 26 in Grant
Hospital in Columbus, OH after an extended illness. Born in Johnson
County on April 6, 1886, he was the son of the late Elleck and Susan
Bayes Williams. He was a resident of Mt. Sterling, OH at the time of
his death and had been a member of the United Baptist Church for 47
years. His wife, the former Elizabeth Meade, preceded him in death on
October 13, 1958. Survivors include one son, Floyd Williams, Jr., of
Columbus, OH, five daughters, Mrs. Hazel McCarty and Mrs. Florence
Rhodes of Columbus, OH, Mrs. Joy McCarty of Hager Hill, Mrs. Mabel

Eunie Blair, 77, died Tuesday, December 10 in a local hospital after an
extended illness. A resident of Leander, she was born in Johnson County
on October 24, 1891, the daughter of the late John Walter and Mary Rice
Watkins. She was affiliated with the Liberty Baptist Church. Survivors
include three daughters, Mrs. Cecil Blair of Leander, Mrs. Vencil
Conley of Hillsboro, OH and Mrs. Floyd Long of Columbus, OH; nineteen
grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Mae Picklesimer of Denver. Services
were held Friday, December 13 in the Liberty Baptist Church at Denver
with Cline Salyer, Willard Wilcox and John G. Sammons the officiating
ministers. Burial was in the Sam Blair Cemetery at Leander. The Jones

Elzie F. Blevins, 89, died Thursday, December 12 in a local hospital
after an extended illness. Born in Johnson County on June 23, 1879, he
was the son of the late John and Lucy Bayes Blevins and was a member of
the United Baptist Church. A farmer, he resided at Barnetts Creek. His
wife, Rhoda Blevins, preceded him in death on June 10, 1961. Survivors
include five sons, Pluma of Staffordsville, Calvin and Lazarus of
Barnetts Creek, Herbert of Dayton, OH, and Isreal of Louisville; and
three daughters, Runa Dye of Dayton, OH, Rusha Dye of Alger, OH and
Elsie King of Staffordsville. Funeral services were conducted on
Saturday, December 14 in the Barnetts Creek United Baptist Church with
Lonza Reed and John Pelphrey the officiating ministers. Interment
followed in the Blevins Family cemetery at Barnetts Creek under the

Retired farmer Dan G. Brown 83, died Saturday, December 28 in a local
hospital after an extended illness. Born in Johnson County on August 5,
1885, he was the son of the late Hezekiah and Jane Auxier Brown.
A lifelong resident of River, he was affiliated with the Methodist
Church. Surviving are the widow, Lydia Borders Brown; three
daughters Marvel Boyd of Frankfort and Mabel Boyd and Shirley Ross of
Wittensville; a brother Lidge Brown of Prestonsburg and two sisters,
Angie Daniels of River and Nora Hawes of Louisa. Funeral Services
were held on Monday, December 30 in the Borders Chapel Methodist
Church, of which he was a member, with Ellis Hamilton the officiating
minister. Burial took place in the Borders Family Cemetery at
River under the direction of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home.

Malta (Meek)
1902-1968
Mrs. Malta Meek Brown, 66, of River died Sunday, December 22, in a
local hospital. She was born at Williamsport, on April 11, 1902, the
daughter of Vina Penix Meek, who survives, and the late Winfrey Meek.
(Note: this is wrong as Vina died in 1957 and Winfrey died in 1970.)
Her husband, John B. Brown, preceded her in death on May 18, 1967.
Survivors including her mother, are a foster daughter, Billie Skeens of
Roseville, MI; a brother, Bill Meek of Salyersville and a sister, Mrs.
Nora Rodman of Ashland. Five grandchildren and two great grandchildren
also survive. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, December 24,
in the River United Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with
Cully Sparks, Buell Ferguson and Everett Slone the officiating
ministers. Interment followed in the Ashland Cemetery under the

Flat Gap resident Jimmy Cantrell, 59, died Wednesday, December 25 in a
local hospital after an illness of three months. Born at Fuget on April

Salyer of Flat Gap and two grandsons, Jeff and Mark Salyer of Flat Gap.

Henry
1917-1968
Thealka resident Henry Castle, 51, died Sunday, December 8 in a local
hospital. A miner, by occupation, he was born in Johnson County, on
March 15, 1917, the son of the late Joe and Nora Robinson Castle.
Survivors include the wife, Alfair Smith Castle; four sons, Richard,
James, Michael, and Garry all at home, and a daughter, Patricia, also
at home. Additional survivors include six brothers, Joe of Pikeville,
Gaylord “Dago” and Dewey of Thealka, Curtis of Twilight, WV, Howard of
Prestonsburg, and James of Columbus, OH; and two sisters, Mrs. Richard
Patrick of Ashland and Mrs. Charles Patrick of Chelsea, MI. Services
were conducted Tuesday, December 10 in the Thealka Freewill Baptist
church with Don Fraley and Charles Stapleton officiating. Interment was

COYER, Whipple Ted
1906-1968
Funeral services were held in O’Dell Funeral Home chapel on December 18
for Whipple Ted Coyer, 62, of Route 1, Pound, VA. Mr. Coyer was the
brother of the late Mrs. Audrey Coyer Grimm of Nippa and had several
nieces and nephews in this area. He was born at Wellston, OH, on March
29, 1906, a son of Thomas and Laura Steven Coyer. In his early life he
moved to Eastern Kentucky with his family and for several years resided
in Auxier. He was a mining electrician and for several years served on
the Police Force at Jenkins. A veteran of World War Ii, serving 2
½ years in the U. S. Navy, he had retired due to ill health and
resided with his wife, Dorothy Cox Coyer in Pound, VA. He died on
December 14, 1968 of an apparent heart attack in the Appalachian
Regional Hospital in Wise, VA. He was a member of Masonic Lodge,
Shriners and VFW and was affiliated with the Baptist Church. The
Reverend C. W. Hawkins officiated at the services and burial was held
in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens at Norton, VA. Paintsville

Mrs. Virgie Green, wife of J. M. Green, died in a Tulsa, OK hospital
December 26 after a brief illness. Survivors including the husband, are
one son, James B. Green and two granddaughters of Tulsa, one sister,
five brothers, and several nieces and nephews. She was a sister in law
of Mrs. Virgil Lemaster of Flat Gap. Funeral services and burial were

Johns Creek resident Mintie Hobson, 74, died Monday, December 16 in a
local hospital after an extended illness. Born in Floyd county on April
22 1894, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Wells
Bucher and was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving is the
husband, Millard Hobson, four daughters, Mrs. Evelyn McKenzie and Mrs.
Irene Ku???ski of Dayton, OH, Mrs. Willadean Ells of Mason, GA, and
Mrs. Shirley Shannon of West Liberty, thirteen grandchildren an six
great grandchildren and a brother, Lindsey Burcher of Van Lear. Bill
Ford, Cecil Sherman and J. H. Short will officiate at the services that
will be held Thursday, December 19, in the Philadelphia Church of
Christ. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Johns Creek. The Jones

JACKSON, Floyd
1898-1968
Floyd Jackson, retired coal miner died Monday, December 2 at 6 p.m. He
was born in Carter County in 1898, the son of the late John and
Elizabeth Jackson Parsons. He came to Johnson County in 1905 and made
his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Jackson. He was
married in 1916 to the former Frona Blanton of Magoffin County, now
deceased. He was remarried to Irene Ward, who survives. Additional
survivors include four sons, Loge Jackson of Paintsville; John Jackson
of Springfield, OH, Anthony Bruse and Paul Randell Jackson of
Paintsville; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Pauline) Montgomery of East
Beech Grove, IN and Mrs. James (Maxine) Long of Beech Grove, IN. Two
sons, Billie and Floyd Thomas Jackson and two daughters, Ollie May
Jackson Taylor and Elizabeth Jackson Pavlina, preceded him in death.
Four step children, 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, also
survive, as do two brothers, Jime and Loge Jackson of Paintsville; a
half brother, Roy Parsons, and a sister, Mary Blair Castle of
Paintsville. Friends and relatives may call at the Jones and Preston
Funeral Home Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday,
December 5 at 1:30 p.m. in the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church

Sam Jenkins, 68, died Thursday, December 12 at his home in Columbus,
OH, after an extended illness. Born in Morgan County on January 26,
1900, he was the son of the late Daniel and Missouri Blevins and was
affiliated with the Christian Union Church. Funeral services were
conducted on Sunday, December 15 in the chapel of the Jones and Preston
Funeral Home with the Reverend George Collins officiating. Burial was
held in the Patty Flats Cemetery at Fuget under the direction of the

JOHNSON, Wilford
1968
Wilford A. Johnson, 83, a teacher at Rockhouse and Millers Creek 65
years ago in 1913, died Sunday in a Louisville Hospital. He was the son
of George M. Johnson, former superintendent of Johnson County Schools,
and Lydia Margaret Fairchilds Johnson, a direct descendant of
Revolutionary Ward soldier Abuid Fairchilds. After service as a
telegraph operator on the N & W Railroad, he joined the Internal
Revenue Service, continuing until retirement. He owned a large farm at
Jett, in Franklin County, where he lived after retiring. Survivors
include his wife, Dora Egbert Johnson, a son, Raymond, of Louisville,
and four daughters, Marie Johnson of Louisville, Louella Bassett of
Long Island, NY, Elizabeth Sefner of Deposit, NY, and Lydia M. Johnson
of McComb, IL. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Emma Castle of
Paintsville and Laura Young of Pomona, CA, and one brother, Alfred H.
Johnson of Paintsville, also a former superintendent of Johnson County

KESTNER, Glen Wilson

Services were held here Thursday, January 2, for Glen Wilson Kestner,
four year old son of Paul and Margie Shepherd Kestner of Flint, MI. The
youth died Sunday, December 29, at the Hurley Hospital in Flint, after
an illness of several months. A brother, Kenneth, survives, in addition
to his parents. Scott Castle and Hubert Davis officiated at services in
the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Estep

Rena Mae (Newton)
1883-1968
Rena Mae Leamond, 85, died Thursday, December 5 in a local hospital
after an extended illness. Born in White Field, NH on May 9, 1883, she
was the daughter of the late Allen P. and Mary Pettis Newton. She had
been a Registered Nurse for thirty years and had lived at Paintsville
for two months at the time of her death. She was affiliated with the
Methodist Church. Her husband, Ross William Leamond, preceded her in
death in January 11, 1947. Survivors include three sons, Plummer
William Leamond of Claremont, NH, Allen Newton Leamond, East Hartford,
CT, and Harvey Ross Leamond, of Knoxville, TN; a daughter Margaret Ann
Sanders, 18 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Funeral services
were conducted on Saturday, December 7 in the First Baptist church of
Paintsville with Reverend James Wallace officiating. Burial took place
in the Richmond Cemetery with the Preston Funeral Home in charge of

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, December 28 for Henry Music,
76, who died Wednesday, December 25, in a local hospital after an
extended illness. Cecil Sherman and John G. Sammons officiated at the
services held in the West Van Lear Church of Christ, of which he was a
member. Interment followed in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville
under the direction of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home. Born in
Johnson County on January 1, 1892, he was the son of the late Lincoln
and Mahala Webb Music. He was a retired coal miner and resided in Van
Lear at the time of his death. Survivors include the widow, Carrie
Walker Music, a son, Warren Music, of West Carrolton, OH; two
daughters, Mrs. Mildred Sheild of Holden, WV and Mrs. Ollie Derosa of

Amos
1872-1968
Amos Skaggs, 96, of Paintsville, died December 30 at his home. A
retired miner, he was born at Martha in January 1872, the son of Miles
and Millie Sparks Skaggs. He was a member of the United Baptist Church.
Mr. Skaggs’ first wife, Sarah O’Bryan Skaggs, preceded him in death in
1952. His second wife, Tillie Castle Skaggs, died in 1963. Surviving
sons include Elisha Skaggs of Urbana, OH, Henry Skaggs of Van Lear, and
Hobart Skaggs of Indiana and a step son, Irvin Castle of
Staffordsville. Surviving daughters include Delphia Music and Marie
Music, of Paintsville, Bell O’Bryan of Ypsilanti, MI, and Rebecca
Butcher of Van Lear, and a step daughter, Mary VanHoose of Manila.
Services were held Wednesday, January 1, at the United Baptist Church
at Barnetts Creek, with Elders Nim Sturgill, Elzie Banks and Lloyd
Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Salyers Cemetery at

Cornelius Skaggs, 86, died Wednesday, December 18, in Jewish Hospital
in Louisville. Services were held Saturday, December 21 in the
Enterprise Baptist Church at Red Bush with Ellis Hamilton, Willard
Bailey, and Homer Evans the officiating ministers. Burial was held in
the Gilliam Branch Cemetery. The Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements. Born in Johnson County on October 23, 1882, he was a
retired steam fitter and resided at Cordel at the time of his death. He
was affiliated with the Enterprise Baptist church. His wife, Carrie
Osborne Skaggs, preceded him in death March 31, 1961. Survivors include
five sons, Homer of Louisville, John and Mitchell of Cordel, William of
Columbus, OH and Calvin of Wilbur; four daughters, Mrs. Lexie Skaggs of

OH, and Mrs. Dixie Pendleton of Elizabethtown; a sister, Mrs. Matilda

Samantha Spears died Monday, December 2 at the age of 84 years. She was
united in marriage to William Spears on December 4, 1900. Mr. Spears
preceded her in death on January 15, 1950. Survivors include three
sons, Russell Spears of Lowmansville, Mitchell and Ray Spears of
Columbus, OH, three daughters, Mrs. Ada Jude of Paintsville, Mrs. Flora
Patrick of Greentown, and Mrs. Beulah Howell of Sandy Hook. Also
surviving are nineteen grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, one
broterh, Guy Castle of Martin; and three sisters, Mrs. Cyntha Salyers
of Louisa, Mrs. Hazel Barber of Martin and Mrs. Paul Twinkle of
Tennessee. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, December 5 in
the Thealka Freewill Baptist Church with Don Fraley the officiating
minister. Burial was held in the Thealka Schoolhouse Cemetery. The

SPRADLIN, James Thomas
1937-1968
James Thomas Spradlin, 31, died Saturday, December 14 as a result of
injuries sustained in an auto-train accident in Ironton, OH. Mr.
Spradlin was dead on arrival at Lawrence County General Hospital in
Ironton. Born in Ironton on June 21, 1937, he was the son of Alka Dale
Ward of Paintsville and the late Jimmy Spradlin. He was a Paintsville
City employee at the time of his death. Survivors including the mother,
are two sons, Bobby Lee and James Thomas Spradlin, both of Paintsville,
and a daughter, Jenny Lynn Spradlin of Paintsville, two brothers and
two sisters, Frank Spradlin, Jr., Manford Spradlin and Berta Mae
Spradlin, all of Paintsville and Lena VanHoose of Fairborn, OH. Funeral
services were conducted Tuesday, December 17 in the chapel of the Jones
and Preston Funeral Home with Reverend Scott Castle officiating.

Coal miner Jess Tackett, 79, died Saturday, December 21, in a local
hospital after an extended illness. Born in Johnson County on April 9,
1889, he was the son of the late Billy and Polly Caudill Tackett and
was a resident of West Van Lear at the time of his death. Survivors
include the wife, the former Alice Brown; six sons, Densil Lee of West
Van Lear, James and Turner of Baltimore, OH, Burnis of Florida, Enus of
Moundsville, WV and Carl Webb of Munith, MI; two daughters, Marie Allen
and Geraldine Crum of Florida. Additional survivors include a brother
Clyde Tackett of Paintsville and a sister, Phoebe Collins of Garrison.

local hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services were

8, 1904, he was the son of the late George and Rhoda Chandler Tackett.
Survivors include the widow, Ruby Culwell Tackett, four sons, Milton of

of Wilbur; two daughters, Ruth Daniels of Dayton, OH and Marie

Lakie Vaughan, 90, died Sunday, December 22, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Johnnie Castle in Paintsville. Born in Lawrence County
on November 22, 1878, she was the daughter of the late William and
Susan Childers Quenberry. She was a resident of Paintsville at the time
of her death and was a member of the First Methodist Church. Survivors,
in addition to her daughter, include a son, Eulah Vaughan of
Paintsville; a granddaughter, Mrs. Lowell Webb of Holden, WV and a
sister, Mrs. Will Wallace of Bluefield, WV. Funeral services were held
in the Thealka Freewill Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 25 with
Cullie Hager the officiating minister. Burial was held in the
Wells-Buckingham Cemetery at Paintsville under the direction of the

WARD,
Heber
1897-1968
Heber Ward, 71, former police chief in Paintsville and a retired
conductor on the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, died Thursday,
December 12, after an extended illness. Born at Offutt in April 1897,
he was the son of W. J. and Lucinda Preston Ward. He was a member of
the Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Ward, a past commander of the American
Legion Post, was honored by that organization last year with a Life
membership. A much-decorated veteran of World War I, he had earned the
Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart, a citation from the
government of France and a commendation signed by President Woodrow
Wilson. Wounded twice in Europe, he had received a commendation for
“extraordinary heroism”. Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Mae Sublett
Ward, two sons, Heber Franklin Ward and Douglas Earl Ward, both of
Tacoma, WA and two daughters, Mrs. Willard (Doris) Ward of Charlotte,
NC and Mrs. Carl (Maxine) Leslie of Paintsville, 11 grandchildren, also
survive. A brother, Shade Ward, lived in Paintsville and another
brother, Ted Ward, lives at Oil Springs. Services were held Sunday,
afternoon at the third Street Freewill Baptist church, with Reverend
Claude Preston and Reverend Richard Williams officiating. Burial
followed in the Sublett Cemetery at Paintsville. Nephews served as
pallbearers and WWI veteran as honorary pallbearers. The Paintsville
