ADAMS, James H.
1948-1969
Military graveside rites were provided here Monday by a detachment from
Fort Knox for the funeral of PFC James H. Adams, who died April 9 of
wounds received in Vietnam. PFC Adams had been transferred from Vietnam
to Japan for treatment, and then taken to Walter Reed General Hospital
in Washington, where he succumbed. He was injured in January in
Vietnam, when a hostile mine detonated, striking him with shrapnel in
the right frontal lobe of the brain and in all extremities. Shortly
after being hospitalized in Vietnam, he suffered cardiac arrest and was
transferred to a hospital in Japan, on the serious list. Born at
Whitehouse in September, 1948, the 20 year old soldier was the son of
John and Maggie Adkins Adams. Surviving in addition to the parents, are
eight brothers and sisters: Clell Adams, John Adams, Jr., Herbert Ray
Adams and Mrs. Maudie Duty of Whitehouse, Ernest Medows of Raven, VA,
Mrs. Helen Stooksbury of Kopperston, WV, Mrs. Louida Burk of Hager Hill
and Mrs. Mable Meek of Armstrong, OH. Rev. J. H. Short officiated at
the April 14 services held at the Meally Church of Christ. Burial
followed in the Adams Cemetery at Whitehouse. The Preston Funeral Home

BOWEN, Jack
1887-1969
Jack Bowen, 81, a retired miner died Wednesday, April 9 at his home in
Blaine after an illness of several months. Born at Boons Camp on June
22, 1887, he was the son of the late Jim and Julie Dutton Bowen. He was
affiliated with the United Baptist Church. His wife, Viola Spears
Bowen, whom he married in January of 1906 at Boons Camp, preceded him
in death in January of 1963. Survivors include two sons, Isaac “Ike”
Bowen of Blaine and Raymond Bowen of Randell, WA; three daughters, Anna
Hazlette of Randell, WA, Gertrude Horn of Barnetts Creek, and Marmalou
Young of Vermillion, OH; one sister, Ida Meek of Boons Camp; 32
grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren. Funeral services were
conducted Friday, April 11 in the Little Friendship UnitedBaptist
Church with Nim Sturgill and Earl Muncy the officiating ministers.
Interment followed in the Dennie Pigg Cemetery at Boons Camp under the

CASTLE, James E.
1926-1969
James Edward “Jim” Castle, 42, died at his home on Turner Branch,
Paintsville, Wednesday, April 16, after an extended illness. Born in
Boyd County on August 26, 1926, he was the son of Jay and Katherine
Stambaugh Castle, who survive. He was affiliated with the Freewill
Baptist Church. Additional survivors include his wife, the former
Hattie Marie Ratliff; two sons, Don Edward and Glen Richard, both of
Turner Branch; a brother, Newton Castle of Holden, WV; and five
sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Fannin, Mrs. Madge Lowe and Mrs. Marie Lowe all of
Staffordsville, Mrs. Betty Borders of Urbana, OH and Mrs. Mary Alice
Arms of Oil Springs. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 19
in the Third Street Freewill Baptist church with Claude Preston and
John Frank Ratliff officiating. Interment followed in the family
cemetery at Turner Branch under the direction of the Jones and Preston

CASTLE, Mary (VanHoose)
1907-1969
Nippa resident Mary Castle, 62, died Sunday at her home after an
illness of several months. The daughter of Harry and Sopara Preston
VanHoose, she was born in February 1907, and had been a lifelong
resident of Nippa. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist church.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Castle, a son, Harold “Cotton”
Castle of Nippa, and a granddaughter, Mrs. Karen Lynn Bowen also of
Nippa. Two great grandchildren also survive. A brother, Oscar VanHoose,
and a sister, Mrs. Norma Terry, live at Nippa, and anther brother,
Harry VanHoose, Jr., lives at New Albany, IN. Services were held
Tuesday, April 8, at the Freewill Baptist Church at Nippa, with Rev.
Millard VanHoose and Rev. Claude Preston officiating. Burial, under the
direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home, followed in the family

CRUM, Blanche (Williamson)
1893-1969
Mrs. Blanche Crum, 78, died Monday, April 21, in a local hospital after
an illness of five years. Funeral services were conducted by Nim
Sturgill, Arthur Preece and Jim Preece in the Little Friendship United
Baptist Church at Boons Camp on Thursday, April 24. Interment was in
the Crum Cemetery at Boons Camp under the direction of the Preston
Funeral Home. Born at Inez on April 6, 1893, she was the daughter of
George and Minnie Copley Williamson and was a resident of Williamsport
at the time of her death. Survivors include her husband, William Crum,
whom she married at Davisport in 1911; three sons, Hubert Crum of
Elyria, OH, Everett Crum of Williamsport, and James Crum of Boons Camp;
three daughters, Mrs. Ethel Daniels and Mrs. Minner Waller of Boons
Camp, and Mrs. Edna Jackson of Portsmouth, OH; and one brother Roy

DANIEL,, Leonard
1884-1969
Retired contractor and builder Leonard Daniel, 84, died Wednesday,
April 23 at his home on Frank Street in Paintsville. Mr. Daniel had
been ill for several months prior to his death. The son of Isom P. and
Elizabeth Murray Daniel, he was born at Kerz in May 1884. He was a
member of the United Baptist church. Survivors include his wife, Jessie
Brown Daniel, a son, W. L. Daniel of Paintsville and another son, J. G.
Daniel of Novain, CA, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren
also survive. A brother, Lawrence Daniel, lives in Paintsville, and a
sister, Mrs. Mart Hayes, lives at Kerz. Services were held Sunday,
April 27, at the United Baptist church in Paintsville, with Elders F.F.
Rigsby, C. J. Sparks, and O. I. Williams officiating. Burial followed
in the Mayo Cemetery at Paintsville. Pallbearers included Ray T.
Preston, Robert E. Butler, Jack Vickers, Jess Songer, Howard Sparks,
Dean Williams, Ken Orbine, and Malcolm Shearer. The Paintsville Funeral

DANIEL, Mervin
1886-1969
Former resident Mervin Daniel, 83, died Saturday, April 5, in Columbus,
OH after suffering a heart attack. Born at Flat Gap on January 1886, he
was the son of Isom and Mary Jane Fairchild Daniel. His wife, Claudia
Long Daniel preceded him in death in 1965. He was a retired employee of
the Jeffries Company, and a member of the Linden Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Martin Boerner of Hilliard, OH; two
sons, Walter C. Daniel and Robert M. Daniel of Columbus, three
grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Etta Daniel,
resides in Ashland. Mr. Daniel was the uncle of Rev. Bruce Daniel of
Sitka and Mervin William of Oil Springs. Services were held Monday,
April 7, at a Hilliard, OH funeral home. Burial followed in the Dublin

ESTEPP, Isabella (Lemaster)
1889-1969
Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 11 for Isabella Estepp,
79, who died Tuesday, April 8 in a local nursing home after an illness
of several months. James Harrison Blair, Arnold Reed and J. T. Bailey
officiated at the services held in the Cold Springs United Baptist
Church at Elna. Interment followed in the Lemaster Cemetery at Win
under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. Born at Win on
August 21, 1889, she was the daughter of the late E. G. and Rebecca
Wright Lemaster. A retired school teacher, she was a resident of Fuget
at the time of her death and was affiliated with the Methodist Church.
Her husband, Dr. William W. Estepp, preceded her in death in 1925.
Survivors include a son, Woodford Estepp of Fuget; a daughter Pauline
Austin of North Holly, CA; two step daughters, Mrs. George Hawks and
Mrs. Karl Kaylor of Portsmouth, OH; two sisters, Mrs. Sally Cantrell of
Ashland and Mrs. Phoebe Williams of Mt. Sterling, OH; four

FYFFE, Lydia J (Kimbler)
1902-1969
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 13 for Lydia Jane Fyffe,
66, who died Thursday, April 10 in a local hospital after an extended
illness. Arnold Reed and Ellis Hamilton officiated at the services held
in the chapel of the Jones and Preston Funeral Home. Burial was in the
family cemetery at Flat Gap. The Jones and Preston Funeral Home was in
charge of the arrangements. Born in Johnson County on November 26,
1902, she was the daughter of the late Scott and Nancy Jane Caudill
Kimbler and was a resident of Flat Gap at the time of her death.
Survivors include the husband, James Fyffe; four sons, Herbert and
Hubert Kimbler of Flat Gap and Hobart and Denver Kimbler of Columbus,
OH; two daughters, Mrs. Opal VanHoose of Flat Gap and Mrs. Irene Keaton
of Hilliard, OH. Additional survivors include twenty grandchildren, a
sister, Mrs. Mary Ward of Portsmouth, OH and four brothers, Garfield
Kimbler of Sebastian, TX, Ocal Kimbler of Grand Rapids, MI, Dave

GREER, James
1945-1969
East Point native James Harold Greer, 24, died Thursday, April 10 in
Cleveland, OH of injuries received in a local incident. Born in Johnson
County on January 17, 1945, he was the son of Charles and Dorothy Boyd
Greer, who survive, and was employed as a service station attendant.
Additional survivors include four sisters, Clara Edith Kruprzak, Myrtle
Deloris Laux, and Carlene Greer, all of Cleveland, OH and Billie Hyden
of East Point. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, April 13, in
the East Point Church of Christ with Tommie Reynolds the officiating
minister. Interment followed in the Greer Family Cemetery at East

JENNINGS, Elbert
1891-1969
Retired miner Elbert Jennings, 77, died Friday, April 11 in a local
nursing home after an extended illness. Born at Meally on July 25,
1891, he was the son of the late Press and Judy Walters Jennings. He
had been a resident of Paintsville for the past ten years and was
affiliated with the United Baptist Church. His first wife, Mary Preston
Jennings, preceded him in death on August 4, 1947. Survivors include
his wife, the former Lena Brown; four sons, James P. of Atlanta, GA,
Ira of West Salem, OH, Elbert, Jr., of Columbus, OH, and Glenn of
Wellston, OH; six daughters, Flossie Preston of Fairborn, OH, Marie
Childers of Columbus, OH, Sylvia Maynard of Inez, Vina Preston of
Louisa and Anna Ruth Frazier of Wooster, OH and Mary Lou Pack of
Paintsville. Additional survivors include a brother, Emerson Jennings
of Coal Wood, WV; a sister, Lizzie Davidson of Morrisdale, VA; 52
grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. Funeral services were
conducted Sunday, April 13 in the Buffalo United Baptist Church with
Tom Sammons, Nim Sturgill and Earl Muncy the officiating ministers.
Graveside rites by the Van Lear Masonic Lodge No. 885 F & AM were

LEMASTER, Willie
1888-1969
Retired miner Willie Lemaster, 81, died Monday, April 28 in a local
hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held
Friday, May 2, at 11 a.m. in the Lowmansville United Baptist Church
with Florida Lyons the officiating minister. Burial will be in the
Grimm Family Cemetery at Lowmansville. The Jones and Preston Funeral
Home is in charge of the arrangements. Born in Johnson County on
February 22, 1888, he was the son of the late William D. and Minerva
Jane Slone Lemaster. He had been a lifelong resident of River and was
affiliated with the United Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife,
Jenette McClure Lemaster; three sons, Oakley of Logan, WV, Arnie of
Winifred and Ishmel of River; a step son, Dexter Castle lives at San
Antonio, TX, a daughter, Margaret L. Young of Columbus, OH; 23
grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Additional survivors include
four brothers and sisters, Monroe Lemaster of Ashland, Lora Fairchild
of West Virginia, and Terie Johnson and Effie Lemaster of Sitka.

Spanish-American War Veteran William May, 88, died Monday, April 28 in
the Veteran’s Hospital at Huntington, WV after an extended illness. A
retired farmer, he was born in Floyd County in September 1880, the son
of Robert and Arminta George May. He was a resident of Hager Hill at
the time of his death. Survivors include his wife, the former Emma Lou
Ramey and one daughter, Mrs. Fannie Salyers of Hager Hill. Funeral
services were held today, Wednesday, April 30, in the chapel of the
Jones and Preston Funeral Home with Reverend John G. Sammons
officiating. Interment followed in the family cemetery at Hager Hill.

Staffordsville resident Ruby Meade, 43, died Sunday, April 27 in a
local hospital after an extended illness. She was the daughter of Mrs.
Neva VanHoose Spradlin and the late Floyd Spradlin and was born in
Johnson County on June 6, 1926. Additional survivors include a
daughter, Janet Sue Meade of Bloomington, KY and a half sister, Ethel
Blevins of Paintsville. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday,
April 29 in the Vine Street Enterprise Baptist Church with Willis
Tackett and Elva Yates officiating. Burial followed in the family

1882-1969
Wittensville native Milt Meadows, 86, died Sunday, April 13, in a local
hospital after an illness of several months. Born in Nippa on April 16,
1882, he was the son of the late Simeon and Pliney Castle Meadows. A
retired miner, he was a lifelong resident of Wittensville and a member
of the Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, the former
Lottie Witten; five sons, James, Vencil, and William of Wittensville,
Marshall of Urbana, IN and Redford of Ypsilanti, MI, a daughter, Mrs.
James Bently of Paintsville; a brother George Meadows of Thealka; a
sister, Malissa Wright of Columbus, OH; 18 grandchildren and three
great grandchildren. Funeral services were held today, Wednesday, April
16 in the Tom’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church at Nippa with the
Reverend Millard VanHoose, Claude Preston and C. C. Hall officiating.
Interment followed in the Meadows Cemetery at Wittensville under the

PENIX, Hobert
1912-1969
Hobert Penix, a lifelong resident of Williamsport, died April 15 in a
local hospital, at the age of 56. Born in December, 1912, he was the
son of Elisha and Fannie Pack Penix. A retired miner, he was a member
of the United Baptist Church. Mr. Penix is survived by his wife, Almira
Pack Penix, to whom he was married in September 1938. also surviving
are a son, Hobert Ferrel Penix of Lakeland, FL, and a daughter Mrs.
Wilma Jean Pack of Paintsville. A sister, Mary Muncy, lives at
Williamsport. Two grandchildren, also survive. Services were held
Friday, April 18, at the Old Friendship United Baptist Church, with Nim
Sturgill, Glen Arrowood and Wallace Calhoun officiating. Burial

RUTH, James B.
1969
James Belmont Ruth, 78, of Lexington, died April 2 in St. Joseph
Hospital at Lexington. Born in Cleveland, TN, he was the son of the
late George H. and Ida R. Ruth. He was retired after 50 years as a C
& O Railroad conductor and had lived most of his life in
Paintsville. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Chalmer Fugate of
Lexington, three sons, James B. Ruth, Jr., of Olney, IL, Claude B. Ruth
of Lexington, and Roger Francis Ruth of Victoria, TX. A brother,
William Sneed of Fredricksburg, VA; five grandchildren and four great
grandchildren also survive. Services were held Friday, April 4 at the
W. R. Milward Mortuary with the Rev. Walter Price officiating. Burial

Mrs. Millie Sadler, 62, died Wednesday, April 30, at her home in Nippa
after an extended illness. The daughter of the late Amos and Bertha Ann
Scarberry Castle, she was born at Nippa on September 9, 1906. Survivors
include her husband, Johnnie Sadler, three sons, Bert and Alvie Sadler
of Urbana, OH, and James Carl Sadler of Nippa; six daughters, Lillian
Parker of Maysville; Edith McKenzie and Lois Ann Sadler of Nippa, Wanda
Lou Bressler of Columbus, OH, Deloris June Gibson of Mechanicsburg, OH,
and Della Mae Kuhn of Springfield; and seven grandchildren. Additional
survivors include six brothers and sisters, Mitchell Castle of South
Shore, Amos Castle of Ashtabula, OH, Monie Preston of River, Edna
Hampton of Canton, OH, Envie Chandler of Beaver, OH and Zelma Rapp of
Waverly, OH. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, May 3, in the
Mouth of Rush Freewill Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with

SALYERS, Glen
1911-1969
Glen Salyers, 57, died at his home on Barnetts Creek Monday, April 21
after an illness of three months. The son of Lula Blair Salyers and the
late Fonzo Salyers, he was born in Johnson County on July 21, 1911. He
was an auto mechanic by occupation and had lived at Barnetts Creek for
his entire life. Additional survivors include his wife, the former
Ernestine McCloud; a son, Wade Salyers of Barnetts Creek; a brother,
Asbury Salyers of Barnetts Creek; and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Bellar
of Barnetts Creek and Mrs. Madge McAndrews of Frankfort. Funeral
services will be conducted Thursday, April 24 in the Third Street
Freewill Baptist Church in Paintsville of which he was a member. Claude
Preston, Scott Castle and Charlie Lemaster will officiate at the
services at 1:30 p.m. Special music will be provided by the Paintsville
Quartet. Interment will follow in the Salyers Cemetery at Barnetts

Flat Gap farmer Isom H. Salyer, 75, died Tuesday, April 8, at his home,
after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April

Janette Avonell Sammons, 33, died Tuesday, April 15, at her home after
an extended illness. The daughter of Russell and June Dills Sammons,
she was born in August 1935 at Van Lear, and was a resident of Meally
at the time of her death. Survivors in addition to her parents, include
a brother, Russell L. Sammons of Cincinnati, OH, and three sisters,
Charlene Spriggs and Arlene Sammons of Dayton, OH and Geraldine Wells
of Smyrna, GA. J. H. Short officiated at services Thursday, April

1883-1969
Mary H. Smith, 85, a native of Morgan County, who has been residing in
Paintsville, died Saturday, April 5, after a brief illness. Born in
July 1883, she was the daughter of Mark and Jane Ferguson Fraley. Her
husband, Armstrong Smith, preceded her in death in 1958. She was a
member of the Primitive Baptist Church. A son, Arthur, resides in
Lexington. Surviving daughters include, Anna Smith of Paintsville,
Elizabeth Salyer of Morehead, Helen Fannin of West Liberty, Vivian
Kemper of Temple, TX, and Vicie Catriz, Jane Martinez and Ruth Jacob,
all of West Chicago, IL. A brother, McKinley Fraley and a sister, Vicie
Skaggs, live in Morehead, and another brother, Daniel Fraley, lives in
Arkansas. Services were held Monday, April 7, at Smith’s Creek Valley
Church at Mima. Rudolph Rowland, Jesse Smith, Elijah Smith and Ronald
Hill officiated. Burial followed in the Smith Cemetery at Mima. The

THOMAS, Maude (Sturgill)
1892-1969
Funeral services were conducted today, Wednesday, April 23 for Maude
Thomas, 76, who died Sunday, April 20 in a local hospital after an
extended illness. H. T. Hamilton and Harold Salyers officiated at the
services held in the Flat Gap Enterprise Church of which she was a
member. Interment followed in the family cemetery at Flat Gap. The

in Johnson County on October 15, 1892, she was the daughter of the late
James and Lidia Brown Sturgill. Her husband, Bert Thomas, preceded her

brother, Herbert Sturgill of Louisa; and two sisters, Julia Vaughan of

VANHOOSE, Wessie
1897-1969
Wessie VanHoose, a retired miner and resident of Thealka died Thursday,
April 3, in a local hospital after an illness of several months. The
son of John and Louise Wellman VanHoose, he was born in Johnson County
in December 1897 and was 71 at the time of his death. Two brothers,
Hansel VanHoose of Wittensville and Guy VanHoose of tutor Key, survive.
Also surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Fairchild and Mrs.
George Meadows of Thealka, Mrs. Earl Daniel of West Van Lear, Mrs.
Fannie Castle of Louisa, and Mrs. Frank Witten of Jackson, OH.
Pallbearers included Edgar Witten, Ernst James Music, Earl Daniel, Jr.,
Edward Fairchild, Raymond Sublett, Donald Joe VanHoose, Lawrence E.
VanHoose and James A. Scurlock. Services were held Sunday, April 6 in
the Freewill Baptist Church at Thealka, with Rev. Claude Preston and
Rev. Don Fraley officiating. Burial followed in the family cemetery

Edith Ward, 87, died Wednesday, April 2, at the Golden Years Rest Home
after an extended illness. The daughter of John E. and Drusilla Froman
Johnson, she was born in Bullitt County, TN in January 1882. She was a

held Friday, April 4, in the chapel of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home
with Rev. James E. Wallace officiating. Burial followed in the Highland

WELLS, John L.
1887-1969
John L. Wells, age 82, of fourth Street, died Sunday, April 20, in St.
Mary’s Hospital at Huntington, WV. A retired salesman, he was born
January 31, 1887, at Williamsport, a son of the late William Allen and
Mary Hicks Wells. He was a member of the Paintsville Lodge 381 F &
AM, and was an honorary Kentucky colonel. Survivors include the widow,
Mrs. Theodosia Long Wells; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Freeman and Mrs.
John Marshall of Huntington; a son, Roger K. Wells of Lexington; a
sister, Mrs. George Walters of Shoals, WV and ten grandchildren and six
great grandchildren. Another son Chester E. Wells, died in 1953.
Funeral services were held today, Wednesday April 23 at the Central
Christian Church in Huntington with the Rev. Jams A. Cox and the Rev.
Jerry Ginnan officiating. Interment was in Spring Hill Cemetery in

WHEELER, Sherman
1902-1969
Sherman Wheeler, 68, of 1825 Wayland Drive, Lexington, formerly of
Paintsville, died at 6 a.m. April 10 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital
at Ashland, following an extended illness. He was born February 28,
1902 in Morgan County, and was the son of the late Charles and
Elizabeth Jayne Wheeler. He was a deacon of the Paintsville United
Baptist Church for many years until he moved to Ashland. He became an
ordained minister in July 1956, and assisted in the organization of the
United Baptist Church in Lexington, and in Phoenix, AZ. He was formerly
secretary and treasurer of the Sandy Valley Grocery Company and past
owner of Wheeler Realty Company in Lexington. Funeral services were
held for him at the Oak Springs United Baptist Church in Ashland,
Monday, April 14. He was buried in the Ashland Cemetery. Surviving are
the wife, Mrs. Ella Winn Wheeler, two sons, Charles Wheeler of Douglas,
AZ and George Harrison Wheeler of Lexington; five daughters, Mrs. Ted
R. Osborn of Lexington, Mrs. Ralph Allen of Scottsdale, AZ, Mrs. Robert
Green, Mrs. Michael Adams, and Mrs. Thomas E. Stevens, all of Ashland.
Two brothers, Harrison Wheeler of Lexington and D. E. Wheeler of
Ashland, three sisters, Mrs. Maurice Minix of Lexington and Mrs. Pat W.
Ramsey of Whitesburg, and Mrs. J. N. Kennard of Ashland, and 18
