Vernie

Seventy-eight-year-old Vernie Blair died on Thursday, April 30, in a
local hospital after an extended illness. The Denver farmer was born in
Johnson County to the late James and Katherine Blair. Cline Salyers
conducted funeral services at Denver’s Liberty Baptist Church and the
Jones-Preston Funeral Home arranged for the burial in the Arms Cemetery
at Denver on May 3. Survivors include his wife, Ora Lee Blair, four
sons from Denver, Jemas, Willis, Wayne and Robert Blair; one step son,
Lora Pelphrey of Quincy, Ohio; two daughters, Anna Mary Meade of
Whitehouse and Wilma Carol Blair from Denver; two half sisters from
Paintsville, Cloie Lemaster and Mollie Trimble, and a brother Albert

BUTCHER, Willie 'Son'
1970
Willie (Son) Butcher died on April 24 at the age of 83. He passed
away at a local nursing home after an extended illness. Services for
the retired miner were held on April 26 in the Millards Creek School
House, with O. I. Williams and Elzie Banks presiding. Burial was at the
Webb Cemetery in Van Lear, under the direction of the Preston Funeral
Home. Butcher was a United Baptist and the son of Simon and Clarendia
Webb Butcher. He spent his entire life in Van Lear. Wife Amanda
Blanton Butcher preceded him in death late last year. Survivors are two
sons from Kenton, Ohio, Curtis and John Butcher. Others include
daughters Opal Columber, Elois Herne, Elizabeth Sharp, Ivory McQuorreen
and Phyllis Byers, all of Kenton, Ohio. There are 26 grandchildren and

CASTLE, Jon C.
1970
Jon Christopher Castle, the child of Fred Robert and Nancy Carol Blair
Castle, died on the day of his birth, April 22, at an Ann Arbor, Mich.,
hospital Funeral services were held on April 24 in the chapel of the
Preston Funeral by Arnold Reed. Burial was in the Stambaugh Cemetery in
Stambaugh. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Orville Castle of
Ypsilanti, Mi., while maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Blair

CHILDERS, Eloise (Roberts)

Funeral services were held last Friday at Paintsville's First Freewill
Baptist Church for Eloise Roberts Childers, 57. Mrs.Childers died in a
local hospital on Wednesday, April 1, and buried in the Town Cemetery
under direction of the Jones- Preston Funeral Home. Scott Castle and
Willis Tackett conducted the services. The former nurse and lifetime
city resident was the daughter of the late Charley and Louella VanHoose
Roberts. Survivors are a daughter, Gayle Rebecca Childers; two sisters,
Mrs. Mary Brownlee of Paintsville, and Mrs. Lorena Butcher of
Williamsport, and two brothers, Earl Roberts from Paintsville and

COLVIN, Claude
1970
Claude Colvin, 63, died on April 26 after an illness of several months.
The Staffordsville resident and retired miner passed away in a local
hospital and was buried in the Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery at
Staffordsville, under the guidance of Paintsville Funeral Home. The
Revs. Russell Ramey, Ellis Hamilton and Bruce Daniel held sercices in
the church on April 29. Colvin's parents were the late Albert and Laura
Ellen Spradlin Colvin of Johnson County. Survivors are his wife, Leah
Blevins Colvin; a son from Paintsville, Jimmy Colvin; three daughters,
Betty Jo Daniel of Thealka, Janet Sue Jones of Dayton, Ohio and
Debra Claudette Colvin of Staffordsville; a brother, Eskill Colvin from
Paintsville; three sisters, Clara Kestner of Hager Hill, Beulah Arrms
of Leander, and Stella Biser on Cinainnati, Ohio and seven

CRACE, Mark
1970
The infant son of Eulas and Vicki Griffith Crace died in his
Paintsville home on April 21. Mark Wayne Crace, who was just nine
months old, was buried in the Mayo Cemetery on April 23, with the
Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge. Scott Castle and J.H. Burton held

DUTTON, James
1970
Seventy seven-year-old retired coal miner James (Jim) Dutton died in
his Paintsville home on April 14. Services followed at the Preston
Funeral Home Chapel on April 18, with Bruce Daniels and Claude Preston
officiating. The Preston Funeral Home was in charge of burial at the
family cemetery in Whitehouse. Dutton was the son of the late Allen and
Amy Mollett Dutton, and the husband of the now deceased Mary Ward
Dutton. He was born in Boons Camp on April 17, 1892. Survivors
include five sons, Denver and Earl Dutton of Whitehouse, Shadie and
Hubert Dutton of Columbus, Ohio, and Selsus Dutton from Wierton, W.
Va., one daughter, Vivian Capparalla of Baltimore, Maryland; a brother
John Dutton of River; three sisters, Mary Spears of mcDowell, Sally
Pack of Dayton, Ohio, and Maggie Williams from Glenoma, Wash.; 32

FIELDS, Mabel (Bowling)
1970
Mrs. Mabel Fields, daughter of Paintsville resident William Paris
Bowling and the late Ada Mabel Bowyer Bowling , died on April 20 in a
Mansfield, Ohio, hospital, She was 60. The Rev. Duane Saylor conducted
services at the Mansfield Church of the Nazarene, and the Wappner
Funeral Home handled burial arrangements at the Manfields Cemetery.
Mrs. Fields married the late Clifford Kiser, lived in Indiana for a
number of years, and gave birth to two daughters; Betty Jean Kiser and
Mrs. Gail Kiser Daily . In 1956 she wed William D. Fields and moved to
Mansfield , where she worked for the Winchester Nursing Home. Survivors
include two brothers, Virgil Bowling of Vansant, Va., and William S.
Bowling from Kenton, Ohio ; four sister, Mrs. Virgil Smith of
Mansfield, Mrs. Charles Wilson of Silver Spring, Mansfield, Mrs. Edgar
Hyden from East Point and Mrs. Mrs. Harry Rivetts of Littleton, Mass.;
three half brothers from Van Lear, Henry , Julius, and Demart Bowling,
and a half brother from Middletown, Ohio, Edgar Bowling; three

GRIM, Mae (Clevenger)
1970
Sixty-six-year-old Mae Clevenger Grim died in Tampa, Fla., on April 23.
She was buried on April 26 in the family cemetery at Nippa, with
arrangements handled by the Preston Funeral Home. Claude Preston
conducted services in the home's chapel. Mrs. Grim was born to Ora and
Stella Lyon Clevenger in Rushville, Indiana, and lived her last 22
years in Tarpon Springs, Flordia. Her husband, M-Sgt. Glenroe Grim
preceded her in death on November 28, 1968. Survivors are Mrs. Bessie
Marshall, a sister from Rushville, and two brothers, Roy Clevenger of
Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Martin Clevenger on Indianapolis, Ind.

HENSLEY, Henry
1970
Henry Hensley died in a Columbus, Ohio, hospital on April 23. Born in
Johnson County on July 2, 1911, he was the son of the late Robert and
Dora Adams Hensley. The Rev. Herschell Short conducted funeral services
in the Meally Church of Christ on April 26, after which the Paintsville
Funeral Home arranged for burial at the Wilson Cemetery in Offutt.
Hensley was a construction worker living in Springfield, Ohio, at the
time of his death. His wife, Easter Wilson Hensley, survives.
Additional survivors include a son James Robert Hensley of Tomahawk;
eight daughters from Springfield, Ohio, Mrs. Arthur Mollett, Mrs.
Claude Hayes, Mrs. Bob Hoffman, Misses Jeane, Dorothy, Joyce Ann,
Henriette and Ottes Lynn Hensley; one daughter from New Haven, Mich.,
Mrs. Clayton Bowden; a brother Ray Hensley of Meally; a sister, Mrs.
Clell Blevins of Springfield, and 15 grandchildren. Paintsville Herald

JOHNSON, Nancy (Kestner)
1970
Nancy Kestner Johnson died April 10 at her home on Woodland Court after
suffering an illness of several months. She was 86. The Rev. Willis
Tackett conducted services the following Monday at the Third Street
Freewill Baptist Church. Burial was at the family cemetery in Hagar
Hill, with the Paintsville Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Johnson was
preceded in death by two husbands, Schal Kestner and Jim Johnson, as
well as her parents, Bailey and Sis Bolin. Surviving sons are Fawine
and Roger Kestner, of Paintsville, and Joe and Buddy Johnson, also of
Paintsville. Others still living are two sisters, four brothers, 32

LEMASTER, Harry B.
1970
The Bethel United Baptist Churrch in Flat Gap, was the site of April 28
funeral services for Harry B. Lemaster, 64, who died three days before
in a local hospital. Officiating ministers were Buell Ferguson, Tommy
Bailey, Lonza Reed and Arnold Reed. A Flat Gap farmer, Lemaster was
born in Johnson County to Alvin and Belle Salyers Lemaster. Four sons
survive; Junior Paul Lemaster of Springfield, Ohio, Billy Eugene, Cecil
Bay and Walter Allen Lemaster all from Nashville, Tenn. Also included
are three brothers; Lexie Lemaster of Fuget, Luther Lemaster of Fuget
and Bruce Lemaster of Newcastle; two sisters, Mary Lemaster of Fuget,
and Ruie Curtis of Centerburg, Ohio; one daughter Mrs. Willa Mae Conley
of Sunbury, Ohio, and nine grandchildren. The Jones Preston Funeral
Home took care of burial arrangements at the family cemetery at Fuget.

LYON, Esta (Gillem)
1894-1970
Mrs. Esta Lyon, 75, of Louisa, died Monday at her home after a long
illness. Born at Keaton, Ky., Aug. 24, 1894, she was a daughter
of the late Isaac and Mary Holboork Gillem. She was a member of
the Louisa Free Will Baptist Church and the Women's Auxiliary, also the
Betsy Ross chapter, Rebekah Lodge, Louisa. Survivors include a
daughter, Mrs. Charlie, Johns of Louisa,; a son, Manuel R. Lyon of
Sharonville, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Martha Kelly of Louisa; a
granddaughter, Mrs. Jo Ann Fraley of Martha, Ky; a grandson, Mark Lyon
of Hanover, Ind.; and two great- grandchildren. The deceased was
preceded in death by her husband, Proctor Lyon, April 6, 1959.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from the Louisa
Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Clifford Austin, Former pastor,
and Rev. Burt Hall, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lyon
Cemetery at Keaton, Ky. The body was removed from the Young Funeral
Home to the church to lie in state one hour before funeral time.
Betsy Ross Rebekah Lodge conducted memorial services Tuesday night at 8

MAYNARD, Mary (Fraley)
1970
Services were held April 27 for Mrs. Mary Maynard, 85, a Staffordsville
resident, who died in a local hospital Saturday, April 25. Mrs.
Maynard's parents were the late Arris and Plina Fitch Fraley; her
husband, who died in 1954, was Ruffus Maynard. Surviving are a son of
Columbus, Ohio, Ruffus Maynard, Jr.; two daughters from Staffordsville,
Mrs. Lucille Mayhan and Mrs. Esta Smallwood; 18 grandchildren and 21
great grandchildren. Mose Kitchen officiated at the services in the
Staffordsville Church of God. She was buried in the Dixon Cemetery at
Staffordsville, with the Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge.

MOLLETTE, Ali
1970
Nim Sturgill and Everett Crum conducted services on April 5 for
longtime River resident Ali Mollette, who died two days earlier at the
age of 83. The Preston Funeral Home arranged for burial at the family
cemetery in Offutt. Mollette, a United Baptist, suffered an extended
illness. He was born in 1886 to John and Martha Hall Mollette and
married in 1903 to Rachel Spears Mollette, who survives. Also living
are two sons, Arnold and Melvin Mollette, both from Offutt; four
daughters, Edna and Mildred Mollette of Offutt, Mrs. Hazel Daniels of
River, and Mrs. Stella Ramey of Springfield, OH; one brother, from
Tomahawk, Rodrick Mollette; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

MUSIC, James Dencil
1970
James Dencil Music 25, died in a Lexington hospital on April 15 after
suffering an extended illness, Funeral services were conducted at the
Rush Fork Methodist Church on April 18 by Charles Stapleton and Bruce
Daniels. The Jones-Preston Funeral Home arranged for burial at the
family cemetery in Nippa. Music is survived by his wife, Nancy Wilcox
Music, and his parents, Kelly and Ella Daniels Music. The one time
paintsville resident was born in JOhnson County. Also still living are
Kelly Music Jr. a brother from Paintsville, and Mollie Faye Williamson,

PENIX, Roma
1970
Roma Penix, 55, died in Silver Creek, N.Y., on April 10 after a
one-year illness. Born in Williamsport, he lived for the past 17 years
in Silver Creek with his wife, Ethel Daniels Penix, and his children.
Penix was the son of Sophia Ward Penix and the late John B. Penix. The
Preston Funeral Home took charge of the burial arrangements on Aril 14
at the family cemetery in Williamsport. Nim Sturgill, Glenn Arrowood
and Earl Muncy conducted services at the Old Friendship United Baptist
Church. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Darrel Penix of Buffalo,
N.Y., Gary Ray Penix of Rochester, N.Y., and Doyle Penix from Silver
Creek; daughter Sharon Jean DaMico, also of Silver Creek; three
brothers, Ernest and John Penix, Jr., both of Williamsport, and Chad
Penix from Lonville, W. Va., three sisters, Mary Belle Wells of Silver
Creek, Alene Vivian Setser of Williamsport, and Eula Lee Robinson of

PERKINS, Lula E. (Bailey)
1970
An extended illness terminated in death on Sunday, April 5, for Lula E.
Bailey Perkins, age 68. On the following Wednesday funeral services
were conducted at the Thealka Freewill Baptist Church by Don Fraley.
Burial was at the Wheeler Cemetery in Thealka under the direction of
the Preston Funeral Home. Mrs. Perkins was the daughter of the late
Will and Catherine Puckett Bailey of Magoffin County. Her husband of
nearly 50 years, Willie Perkins, survives. Other survivors include
three sons, Frank Perkins of Van Lear, Charles C. Perkins of Columbus,
Ohio, and Ollie Perkins, from Wabash, Ind.; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel
Nothstine of Columbus, Ohio and Miss Beulah Perkins of Wabash, Ind.;
one brother, Charlie Bailey of Wabash, Ind.; four sisters, Margret
Rowland of East Point, Christine Meade, Irene Hampton and Emma Jean
Mahan, all of Wabash, Ind.; 22 grandchildren and 12 great

PERRY, Michele Lynn

Michele Lyn Perry, the two-year-old daughter of Michael and Martha
Fannin Perry from Van Lear, died in a local hospital on Friday, April
10, after an extended illness. Funeral services were conducted by Nim
Sturgill the following Sunday at the Little Friendship Baptist Church
in Boons Camp. The Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of the
burial at the Crum Family Cemetery, also in Boons Camp. Michele is
survived by a sister, Audra, who lives at home. Paintsville Herald

RICE, Dr. Grant
1970
A 1904 graduate of the Louisville School of Medicine, Dr. Grant Rice,
died in a Huntington, W. Va. hospital on April 18 1970. The lifelong
Oil Springs resident was 97. On April 21 services were held at the Oil
Springs Methodist Church, with Lonza Reed and Frank Spillman presiding.
The Paintsville Funeral Home took charge of burial at the family
cemetery nearby. Dr. Rice, a 32nd Degree Mason, was born almost a
century ago to John and Polly Salyer Rice of Johnson County. He married
the late Sina Caudill Rice. Survivng sons are Wayne, Wade and Carl Rice
from Oil Springs. Others still living include a daughter from Oil
Springs, Mrs. Hazel Rice, 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and

SKAUGE, Albert A.
1970
An accident claimed the life of Albert A. Skauge, former plant foreman
of the Adams Construction Company, on April 29. The 64- year-old
husband of Evelyn Welch Skauge was buried on May 2 in the Witten
Cemetery at Sitka under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home.
Paintsville Masonic Lodge No. 381 conducted graveside rites after J. H.
Short held services in the chapel of the Preston Funeral Home. Skauge,
who lived for the past eight years in Kingsport, Tenn., was the son of
the late Julian and Minnie Skauge from Minnesota. He was a Lutherine
and a member of New Providence Lodge No. 128, Marysville, Tenn. His
wife, whom he married in Paintsville in 1942, survives him. Paintsville

SPEARS, Elijah
1970
Sixty-five-year-old Elijah Spears died on April 5 at a Louisa hospital
after suffering an extended illness. Services were held at Beauty,
where he lived, in the Buck Creek Christian Church. Burial was at the
Field's Cemetery, Boons Camp, under the direction of the
Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home. Spears was the son of the late Winfield
and Judy Spears. He is survived by his wife; one daughter; two sons,
Earl Spears of New Jersey and Estill Spears from Ohio; three brothers,
George Spears of Kansas City, Kansas, Winfield Spears, Jr. of Port
Clinton, Ohio, Eugene Spears of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Mary

WADDLE, James
1970
James Waddle died in a Louisa hospital on Monday, April 6, at the age
of 50. The former laborer and Whitehouse resident was born to the
late George and Minnie Adams Waddle in Johnson County. Services were
held at the Hammond Freewill Baptist Church on April 8, with Charles
Stapleton and Ellis Hamilton officiating. Burial followed at the
family cemetery in Whitehouse, under the guidance of the Jones-Preston

WELLS, Fannie (Richmond)

Death came on April 27, to Fannie Lee Richmond Wells at an area
hospital. She was 74, and had suffered a prolonged illness. The
wife of the late Richard M. Wells was buried in the Relocation Cemetery
at Auxier, after services were held on April 29 in the Auxier Methodist
Church. Mose Kitchen was the minister and the Jones-Preston
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Born to Samuel and
Unoka Clark Richmond in Johnson County, she is survived by two sons
from Columbus, Ohio, Glen and Haskel Wells. Others surviving include
five daughters, Mildred Sturgill, Lucille Patton and Beatrice Childers,
from Auxier and Unoka Frisby and Delight Hall of Louisville; a sister
and a brother from Van Lear, Anna Wells and Bill Richmond; 21
