AUXIER, George W.
1905-1976
Services for Dr. George Washington Auxier, 70, who died Friday in Simi
Valley, CA were held in Sun City, AZ. Dr. Auxier was born in Johnson
County, near Paintsville, on November 27, 1905. He was educated in
county schools prior to his high school graduation from Ft. Thomas, KY.
He received his AB and MA degrees from Miami University, Oxford, OH,
where he was a four-letter athlete. He obtained his PhD in 1938 from
Ohio State University. During his under graduate years, he was active
in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and a member of several honorary
historical organizations. He was a member of the Masonic Order and a
Kentucky Colonel. He was a retired Federal employee having served in
the executive offices of Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and
Johnson. During World War II he served in an Army Intelligence
capacity. His span of more than thirty years in the Federal government
saw service with The Commerce Department, Atomic Energy Commission and
State Department. He was a graduate of the National War College in
Washington, D.C. Dr. Auxier had lectured in U. S. history and diplomacy
at Ohio State University, American University, George Washington
University, and in Business Administration at the University of
Maryland. He retired from Federal Service in 1968. He moved from
Maryland to Sun City, AZ in 1973. He is survived by his widow,
Fernallen A., two sons, George C. of San Francisco, CA and John W. of
Mundelein, IL and a daughter Mrs. Catherine Pittenger of Simi Valley,
CA and one grandchild, Sally Kay Pittenger and three sisters, Mrs. P.
T. Holbrook, and Miss Madge Auxier of Paintsville, Mrs. A. G. T. Dorton
of Lexington and one brother, Mr. Earl M. Auxier of LaFollette, TN.

BALDRIDGE, Thomas Andrew
1883-1976
Thomas Andrew Baldridge, 93, retired Little Paint Creek farmer, died
April 29, after a long illness. A son of Martin V. and Elizabeth Music
Baldridge, he was born February 15, 1883 on Little Paint Creek where he
spent his life until his last illness. His wife, Rebecca Hager
Baldridge preceded him in death in 1940, and his only son William T.
Baldridge, died in 1971. His funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday
from the J. H. Nunnery Funeral Chapel in Prestonsburg with the
Reverends Moses Kitchen and Dewey Music officiating. Burial was made in
the family cemetery on Little Paint. Active pallbearers were Ned
Baldridge, Glenard Baldridge, James Harmond, Robert Baldridge, Ambrose

BARKER, Frank
1907-1976
Frank Barker, 68, died Friday, April 30, at his Volga home. He was born
December 11, 1907, in Johnson County and was the son of Willie and
Missouri Osborne Barker. Surviving are his wife, Erie McKenzie Barker,
three step sons, Arland Lemaster of Xenia, OH, Bobby Joe Lemaster of
Circleville, OH, and Paul Lemaster of Volga, three step daughters,
Evalene Lemaster of Vermilla, OH, Emma Jean King of Staffordsville and
Beatrice Salyers of New Holland, OH; six brothers and sisters,
including Millard Barker of Mine Fork, Johnny Barker of Fuget, Lura
Estepp of Franklin, OH, Reilda Tackett of Paintsville, Lexy Rose of
Urbana, OH and Carla Greene of Lowmansville, and 37 step grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 3 in the Jones-Preston Funeral
Home Chapel with Reverends Lonza Reed and J. T. Bailey officiating.
Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park at
Staffordsville with Jones-Preston Funeral Home handling arrangements.

BELCHER, James Irvin
1913-1976
James Irvin Belcher, 63, died Friday, April 2, at Ashland. He was the
son of Press and Lula Belcher and was born August 3, 1913, in
Montgomery County. He was a resident of Ashland, an engineer for the C
& O Railroad, and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 23 at Mt.
Sterling. Surviving are a son, Stanley Arrowood of Flatwoods, a brother
and three sisters, Harold of Mt. Sterling, Robin Crouch of Bethel, Flo
Amburgy of Ashland, and Loucille Harper of Dupont, GA. Funeral services
were held Monday, April 5, in the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel
with Rev. W. E. Davis officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at
Offutt with Jones-Preston Funeral Home handling arrangements.

Gracie Patrick Carpenter, 72, died Friday, April 30, in the Paintsville
Hospital. She was the daughter of Noah and Mamie Osborne Patrick and
was born October 28, 1903, at Meally. Mrs. Carpenter was a resident of
Swamp Branch and a member of the Pentecostal Church. Her first husband,
J. H. Cantrell, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband,
Dudley Carpenter, five step sons, Leander Carpenter, Bruce Cantrell,
Amax Cantrell, Joe Cantrell and Ace Cantrell; five step daughters, Opal
Marshall, Virginia Marshall, Oakie Mae Conley, Oma Reed, and Mrs. Newt
Music; five brothers and sisters, Evelyn Hamilton and Rosie Preston of
Meally, Frankie Doss of Gary, WV, Flem Patrick of Northfork, WV and
Willis Patrick of Staffordsville. Funeral services were held Monday,
May 3, in the Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends Melvin
Blanton and Adam Marshall officiating. Burial was in the Patrick

Mrs. Clara Crace, 80, died Tuesday, April 20, in the U. K. Medical
Center in Lexington. She was the daughter of Elzie and Martha Jackson
Litteral and was born Aug 24, 1895, in Johnson County. Mrs. Crace was a
resident of Lexington and a member of the United Baptist church. Her
husband, Albert Crace, preceded her in death on June 24, 1972.
Surviving are three sons, Burns of Lexington, Gene of Brooksville, FL
and Bennie of Oil Springs; two daughters and a step daughter, Ruby
Conley of Flatwoods, Ruth Litteral of South Charleston, OH and Pearlie
Blair of Oil Springs; two brothers, Roe Litteral of south Solon, OH,
and Raleigh Litteral of MI; four sisters, Lucy Doyle of IN, Stella
Davis of Lexington, Nola McAllister and Beulah Walker of Ashland; 19
grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren. Funeral

Johnny Crislip, 71, died Monday, April 12, at his Staffordsville home.
He was the son of Edd and Alice Murray Crislip and was born March 15,
1905 in Johnson County. Surviving are his step mother Alice Murray
Crislip (note: this should be Arizona Davis Crislip); two daughters,
Martha Virginia Blevins of Ohio and Betty June Caudill of Sitka; two
half brothers, Everett of Frankfort and Arthur of McDonald, GA; a half
sister, Josie King of Staffordsville; 11 grandchildren, and 1 great
grandchild. Graveside services were held Tuesday, April 13, in the
Staffordsville Church Cemetery with Kenny Pelphrey officiating.

Frank Fairchild, 67, died Monday, April 5, in Oak Hill, OH. He was born
April 29, 1908 at Kenwood, KY, son of James and Lou Howard Fairchild.
He was a resident of Thurman, OH. Surviving are his mother, Lou
Fairchild, his wife, Clova Adams Fairchild; five sons, Elwood Payne of
Thurman, OH, Ellis Paul and Hobert of Oak Hill, James of Vinton, OH and
Clarence of Columbus, OH; four daughters, Eloise Curtis of Thurman, OH,
Louise Moris and Opal Woolum, of Oak Hill, and Oma Snyder of Jackson;

Mary Ward Fletcher, 84, died Wednesday, April 28, in the Paintsville
Hospital. She was born April 25, 1892, and was the daughter of Phillip
and Barbara Gibbs Ward. Mrs. Fletcher was a resident of Tutor Key and a
member of the United Baptist Church. Her husband, Jessie James
Fletcher, preceded her in death on September 5, 1968. Surviving are a
daughter, Mrs. Willard Castle and a sister, Mrs. Luciana Castle both of
Tutor Key and 3 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, April
30, in the Tom’s Creek United Baptist Church at Tutor Key with O. I.
Williams and C. J. Sparks as officiating ministers. Burial was in the

Mary Graham, 34, died Sunday, April 18 in Columbus, OH. She was born
January 21 1942 in Johnson County and was the daughter of George and
Anna Dollarhide Ward. Surviving are a son, Paul Dixon of Columbus;
three daughters, Phyllis Dalton, Gloria Nickel and Dolly Dixon, all of
Columbus, nine brothers and sisters, including Francil Ward, Della
Rapp, Nellie Tomblin, Henry Ward, Billy Evans, Vencil Evans, and James
Evans, all of Columbus, Betty Ward of Paintsville and Paul Arms of
Wooster, OH. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 21, in the

Gary L. Grim, 27, died Sunday, April 18, at Highlands Regional Medical
Center. He was the son of Leroy and Pauline Webb Grim and was born May
17, 1948 in Johnson County. He was a resident of Paintsville, a member
of the First Baptist church, a member of the Paintsville lodge 381 F
& AM and general manager for Grim Beverage Company. Surviving are
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Grim; a brother, Roger O. Grim of
Paintsville and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Minuard Grim.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 21, in the First Baptist
church in Paintsville with Dr. Charles Milam officiating. Burial was in

Robert L. Hackworth, 63, died Saturday, April 3, in the Highlands
Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct 7, 1912 in Johnson County, and
was the son of John F. and Laura Wright Hackworth. He was a resident of
Riceville and was a retired carpenter. Surviving are his mother,
Laura Hackworth; his wife, Lora Blanton Hackworth; three sons, David
and Herbert of Oil Springs and Jimmy of Swamp Branch; three daughters,
Thelma of Riceville, Linda Conley and Wanda Lemaster, both of Oil
Springs; four brothers and two sisters, Dewey, Virgil, Rushie Click and
Fannie May, all of Riceville, Norman of Catlettsburg and John of

HICKS, Patrick H.

Patrick H. Hicks, 70, died Monday, April 19, in the Walter Reed Army
Medical center in Washington, D. C. after an extended illness. The son
of the late Jonathan and Cleo Hicks, he was born August 27, 1905, in
Floyd County, and was a resident of Washington, D. C. Mr. Hicks was a
retired soldier and veteran of World War II. His wife, Phenolpha Boyd
Hicks preceded him in death on May 12, 1961. Surviving are a step son,
Liney J. Hicks of Hartford City, IN; two daughters, and a step
daughter, Mrs. Lowell C. Rice of Georgetown, Mrs. Gary Caudill of San
Diego, CA and Mrs. Paris M. Caudill of Lexington, OH; three brothers,
Arthur, Joe and Henry, all of Prestonsburg, three sisters, Mrs. Sam
Stevens and Mrs. Wade Moore of Prestonsburg and Mrs. Richard Harmon of

Fred B. Holbrook, 72, died Thursday, April 22. He was born November 9,
1903, in Johnson County. He was the son of P. T. and Carrie Bailey
Holbrook. Mr. Holbrook was a resident of Paintsville and a retired
salesman of Paintsville Grocery Company. Surviving are his wife, Faye
Green Holbrook, a son, Fred B. Holbrook, Jr., of St. Louis, MO, his
step mother, Mrs. Gertrude Holbrook of Paintsville and two grandsons.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 24 in the Mayo United
Methodist Church in Paintsville with Reverend Sam Glenn officiating.

Jesse Horne, 84, died Saturday, April 3, in the Paintsville Hospital
after a short illness. He was the son of Tom and Mary Combs Horne and
was born in Johnson County on Jan 22, 1892. A resident of Paintsville
he was a retired farmer and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Kate Rice Horne; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia
Horne Meek of Paintsville and a foster daughter, Mrs. Marie Colvin of
East Point; and a sister, Mrs. Tish Slone of Huntington, WV. Funeral

Nursing Home at Prestonsburg. She was born Aug 26, 1892, at Hager Hill

Her husband, Jesse Horne, preceded her in death on April 3, 1976.

Max Murphy, 62, died Tuesday, April 6, at the Paintsville Hospital
after an extended illness. He was the son of Frank and Clara Crace
Murphy and was born January 25, 1914 in Magoffin County. He was a
resident of Van Lear, a coal miner and a member of the Freewill Baptist
Church. Surviving are his wife, Annie Blair Murphy; two sons, William
Robert of Marion, OH and Mike of Van Lear; a step son, Arthur Lee
Castle of Marion, OH, two daughters, Clara Maynard of Beauty and Jackie
Murphy of Van Lear; a brother and sister, Bill Murphy of Marion and

in Ashland. She was born December 18, 1882, in Johnson County, and was

Paintsville and Jack of Ashland; 4 daughters, Retta Walker and Ruth
Strader of Ashland, Mary Alice Wellington of Catlettsburg, and Georgene

Center. He was born May 28, 1903, the son of Jeff and Columbia Hinkle
Perry. Mr. Perry was a resident of Paintsville, a retired miner and a
member of the Freewill Baptist church. Surviving are his wife, Ruth

Paul Pratt, 51, died Monday, April 12, in the U. K. Medical Center in
Lexington. He was born July 28, 1924 in Johnson County and was the son
of Tom and Mary Jane Fairchild. He was a resident of East Point.

Dora Preston, 80, died Saturday, April 17 in Columbus at the residence
of her daughter, Goldia Combs. She was born February 24, 1896 in
Magoffin County and was the daughter of Harvey and Emily Howard Hall.
Mrs. Preston was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Her husband,
Frank Preston preceded her in death. Surviving are five sons,
Harvey of Columbus, Paul of Dayton, Mitchell of Coca, FL, Jarvey of
Jamesville, WS, and Ernest of Alachua, FL; six daughters, Dixie Charles

RICE, Floyd

Floyd Rice, 93, died Wednesday, April 14, at Georgetown, KY. He was a
former resident of Stambaugh. Mr. Rice was born at Denver on September
3, 1882, and was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Liza Caudill
Rice. He had lived at Georgetown for the past nine years and was a
farmer. He had been a member of the Locust Grove United Baptist church
since 1913. He was married to Envy Preston Rice on October 8, 1909. She
preceded him in death on October 12, 1971. Surviving are two daughters,
Mrs. Neva Jo Brooks and Mrs. Anna Lee Brooks both of Georgetown; a
brother, John Hayden Rice of Sitka; two sisters, Martha Stambaugh of
Paintsville and Rosa Salyer of Stambaugh; four grandchildren and four
great grandchildren. Services were held Saturday, April 17 in the
Locust Grove United Baptist Church with Buell Ferguson, Charles Price
and O. I. Williams officiating ministers. Burial was in the family

Verlissa Rowland, 73, died Sunday, April 11, in the Paintsville
Hospital after an extended illness. She was born Aug 24, 1902, in
Johnson County, and was the daughter of R. M. and Lutisha Williams
Curtis. She was a resident of Fuget and a member of the United Baptist
church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Rowland in

Oscar Salyer, 76, died Wednesday, April 21, in the Paintsville
Hospital. He was born January 16, 1900, in Johnson County and was the
son of Alexander and Martha Jane McKenzie Salyer. Mr. Salyer was a
resident of Flat Gap, a retired employee of the Forestry Department and
a member of the United Baptist Church. He married Julia Bayes Salyer on
March 21, 1936. Surviving are his wife, Julia; three sons, Walter
Allen, Rev. Harold Morris, and Denver Lee all of Flat Gap and 3

Clate Selvage, 75, died Friday, April 23, in the Highlands Regional
Medical Center. Mr. Selvage was born March 23, 1901 in Johnson County,
and was the son of John and Martha Hitchcock Selvage. He was a resident
of Denver and a retired miner. Surviving are his wife, Louise
Wright Selvage; 2 sons, J.C. of Denver and Butch of Grove City, OH; 2

with Hondel Adams as officiating minister. Burial was in Highland

SLONE, Cora (Castle)
1894-1976
Mrs. Cora Slone, 81, died Thursday, April 8, in the Paintsville
Hospital. She was born August 1, 1894 at Winifred and was the daughter
of James C. and Lydia Lemaster Castle. Mrs. Slone was a life-long
resident of Winifred and was a member of the Old Hood United Baptist
Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Slone on
November 29, 1955. Surviving are four sons, James of Flat Gap, Wayne of
Springfield, Dennis of Fairborn and Clyde of Thelma; three daughters,
Mary Ratliff of Flat Gap, Ina Wheeler of Walbridge, OH and Shirley
Hughes of West Van Lear; 17 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 11, in the Old Hood United
Baptist Church with Tommie Bailey and O. I. Williams officiating.
Burial was in the Lemaster Family Cemetery at Winifred with Preston

SPENCER, Willie
1912-1976
Willie Spencer, 64, died Friday, April 30, in the Paintsville Hospital
after an extended illness. He was born March 22, 1912 in Johnson County
and was a resident of Thealka. Mr. Spencer was a retired miner and a
member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He married Haley Redford Spencer
on May 30, 1932. Surviving are his wife, Haley; four sons, Billie R.,
Eddie and Bobby of Thealka, and Lonnie of Franklin, OH; a daughter,
Faye Blanton of Beattyville; two brothers and a sister, Estill of
Thealka, Perry of Franklin, OH and Lizzie Selvage of Paintsville; 12
grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Sunday, May 2, in the Jones- Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don
Fraley officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at Thealka with

SPRADLIN, David Harold
1951-1976
David Harold Spradlin, 24, died Saturday, April 28 in Jellico, TN. He
was the son of Harold Spradlin and the late Dixie Mae Reed Spradlin.
Mr. Spradlin was born Dec 18, 1951, in Johnson County. He was a
resident of Denver, an employee of Apex Die Casting Company and had
served in the U. S. Marine Corps. Surviving other than his father are
his step-mother, Irene Bentley Spradlin; five brothers, Chalmer K. of
Leander, Buel E. of Thelma, James of New Carlisle, OH, Gary and Dennis
of Denver, 8 sisters, Beatrice Ward of Fairborn, Francis Mobley and
Bonita Jo Carberry of Dayton, Phyllis Wroblinski of Rockledge, FL,
Janet Spradlin of Orlando, FL, Louise Spradlin, Idabelle Spradlin and
Lynn Marie Spradlin, all of Denver. Funeral services were held Tuesday,
Aug 31, in the Denver home with Hammie May and James H. Blair as
officiating ministers. Burial was in the family cemetery at Denver,
with Paintsville Funeral Home handling arrangements. Paintsville

VARNER, Murtie (Pugh)
1899-1976
Murtie Varner, 77, died Wednesday, April 7, in the Hurley Medical
Center in Flint, MI. She was the daughter of Tom and Cawdonia Spears
Pugh and was born in Johnson County on April 2, 1899. She was a member
of the Pentecostal Church of Christ. Her husband, George Varner,
preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Joseph of Flint and
George of California; two daughters, Rose Tallon of California and Mary
Mollette of Shelby, OH; 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 11 in the Jones-Preston
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. S. T. Adkins officiating. Burial was in
the family cemetery at Van Lear with Jones-Preston Funeral Home

WELLS, Thedosia (Long)
1888-1976
Mrs. Thedosia (Theo) L. Wells died Monday, April 26, in a local
hospital following a short illness. Born April 1, 1888, at Oil Springs,
Mrs. Wells was the daughter of the late John Riggs and Margaret Cooper
Long. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Paintsville and
wrote a history for her church, covering a period from October 30, 1878
to January 1, 1960. She also served as president of the Women’s
Missionary Society and was a past regent and secretary of the Buford
Chapter of the DAR. Mrs. Wells also served as a committeewoman for
Johnson County in the political field and was a Kentucky Colonel. She
was the first telephone operator in Paintsville and retired at the age
of 80 as a court reporter, having served 15 counties for the Workmen’s
Compensation Board as well as being a trial and judicial reporter. Mrs.
Wells was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Wells and a son,
Chester Earl Wells. Surviving are one son, Roger K. Wells, of
Paintsville, two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Mary Ruth) Freeman of
Huntington, WV and Mrs. John (Shirley Rae) Marnell of St. Petersburg,
FL; 11 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Funeral services for
Mrs. Wells will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 29, in the Steele
Funeral Home in Huntington with Dr. Tim Johnson of the First Christian
Church in Paintsville officiating. Burial will be in the Springhill
