Bessie Austin, 67, died Thursday, April 13, at her Boons Camp residence
after an extended illness. Mrs. Austin was born June 15, 1910, the
daughter of Joe and Allie M. Trimble Bolen. She was a member of the
Meally Church of Christ. Surviving are her husband, Isom Austin, a son,
Alvin Austin, Clinton, IL, a daughter, Lillie Mae Daniels, Boons
Camp, two brothers, John Bolen and Paul Bolen, Wabash, IN, three
sisters, Dessie Lee, Michigan, Doshie Daniels, West Van Lear, and
Tessie Fannin, Prestonsburg, 11 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 16 in the
Meally Church of Christ with Reverends Bennie Blankenship and J. H.

Josie Austin, 63, died Tuesday, April 25, in Paintsville Hospital after
an extended illness. Mrs. Austin was born Feb 1, 1915, in Johnson Co.,
the daughter of Matthew and Bessie Dutton Caudill. She was a resident
of Paintsville and a member of the Baptist church. Her husband, William
Bryant Austin, preceded her in death in 1964. Surviving are four sons,
Woodrow Austin, James Austin, and Michael Ray Austin, Paintsville and
Paul Austin, Warsaw, IN; six daughters, Victoria Elliot, Warsaw, Goldie
Litton, Meally, Francis Morgan, Columbus, Dimple McCarty, London, OH,
Doshia Clemons and Judy Jenkins, Paintsville; a brother, Pierce
Caudill, SC; three sisters, Ada Baldwin, Thelma, Mandy Davis,
Paintsville, and Elsie Castle, Thealka, 13 grandchildren and four great
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 27, in
Pentecostal Church of Christ, Paintsville, with Reverends Melvin
Blanton and Jerry Castle officiating. Burial was in L. T. Preston

Melvina Price Baldridge, 48, died Friday, April 28, in Delaware, OH,
after an extended illness. Mrs. Baldridge was born May 28, 1929, in
Johnson County, the daughter of Herbert and Ruby Prater Price. A
resident of Delaware, OH, she was a housewife and a member of the
Freewill Baptist church. Surviving are her husband, Ulysses "Joe"
Baldridge; five sons, Lester, Eddie, David, Thomas, and Dweayne, all of
Delaware; seven daughters, Mrs. Brenda Preston, Boons camp, Mrs. Linda
Slone, Marysville, OH; Mrs. Joann Wheeler, Clrois Baldridge, Mrs.
Charollette Miller, Annabelle Baldridge and Mrs. Melissa Baldridge, all
of Delaware; two brothers, Carl D. Price, Prestonsburg, and Jack Price,
IN; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn booth, WV, Mrs. Louise Rowland,
Springfield, OH and Mrs. Virgie Ward, Tutor Key; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 30, in the Hammond Freewill
Baptist church at Whitehouse with Rev. Jack Pruitt officiating, Burial

Shoppel Blevins, 60, died Sunday, April 2, at Paintsville Hospital
after a sudden illness. Mr. Blevins was born in Johnson County,
February 7, 1918, the son of Elisha Sr. and Sara Elizabeth Craft
Blevins. He was a resident of Paintsville, a member of the Little Mud
Lick Freewill Baptist Church, and was operator of Blevins Trucking.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Curry Blevins, a step son, Casper
Lewis Sears, Jr., Belleville, MI; a daughter, Margaret Lyon Sublett,
Paintsville, two step daughters, Jeri Blevins, Ashland and Kathleen
Cook, Belleville, MI; two brothers, Wayne Blevins, Paintsville, and
Elisha Blevins, Jr., Staffordsville; three sisters, Beechie McKenzie,
Leah Colvin, and Shirley King, all of Staffordsville; and 19
grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 5,
at 1 p.m. in the Staffordsville Freewill Baptist Church with Reverends
James Crider and John Frank Ratliff officiating. Burial will be in the

BRANHAM, Steve
1901-1978
Rev. Steve Branham, 76, died Friday, April 7 at Highland Regional
Medical Center. Rev. Branham was born August 15, 1901 in Johnson
County, the son of Turner and Martha Engle Branham. He was a resident
of Sitka, a retired coal miner, and an ordained minister since 1969.
Rev. Branham was pastor of the Collista Freewill Baptist Church for
four years. Surviving are his wife, Zona Turner Branham, who he married
September 22, 1922 in Johnson County, a son, Beauford Branham,
Springfield, OH, three daughters, Kathleen Ealey, Pompano Beach, FL,
Margaret Williams, Gloucester, VA, and Doris Daniel, Laurel, Miss., a
brother, Frank Branham, Sitka, three sisters, Virgie McCormick, Pedro,
OH, June Mollette, Williamsport, and Nancy Caudill, Plain City, OH; 14
grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Monday, April 10 in the Sitka Freewill Baptist Church with Reverends
Richard Williams, Herb Arms, and Mark Daniel officiating. Burial was in

Paintsville resident Hiram Case, 53, died Tuesday, April 4. Mr. Case
was born April 13, 1923, in Floyd County, the son of Linzie and Jayne
Case. He was a retired employee of Adam Ford Company. Surviving are his
wife, Maudie Marie VanHoose Case, Nippa, Charles Case, Martin and Goble
Case, Hunter, and two sisters, Laura Mullins, New London, OH and Alvan
Castle, Printer. Funeral services were held Friday, April 7, in

Paul Crace, 52, died Sunday, April 9, in Versailles, KY. Mr. Crace was
born October 27, 1925 at Oil Springs, the son of Carl and Mary Ward
Crace. He was employed as a plasterer and was a veteran of World War

Mrs. Alice Davis, 72, died Sunday, April 16, in Paintsville Hospital
after a short illness. Mrs. Davis was born in Johnson County, Mach 12,
1906, the daughter of Newton C. and Luna Williams Fairchild. She was a
resident of Nippa, a retired school teacher and had been a member of
the Freewill Baptist Church for 30 years. Surviving are her husband,
Bill Davis, a son, Ernest Ray Davis, Picayune, Miss; three
brothers, Thurman Fairchild, Ashville, OH, Harmon Fairchild,

Oscar N. Evans, 80, died at his home in Sun City Center, FL, April 7.
He was born in Gallia, OH and moved to Paintsville in 1920. He was
associated with Evans Oil & Gas Company and Evans & Dixon
Drilling Company. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and
Paintsville Lodge 381 F & AM. Survivors are his wife, Ruth, of Sun

Alka Greene, 67, died Sunday, April 3, in U. K. Medical Center. Ms.
Greene was born October 27, 1910 in Floyd County, the daughter of

Baptist Church. Surviving are seven sons, James Earl, Whitesburg, Burl,
Ft. Wayne, IN, Gerald, Brookston, IN, Tom, Floyd and Harold,

Mrs. Nettie Helton, 79, died Friday, April 14, in Mt. Manor Nursing
Home at Prestonsburg after an illness of several months. Born February
26, 1899, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of John A. and Louie
Adams Caudill and was a resident of Oil Springs. She was a member of
the United Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Dewey Helton;
three sons, Dewey Helton, Jr., Pilgrim, KY, John C. Helton, Newport
Beach, CA, and George H. Helton, Frankfort, three daughters, Mrs. Irene
Vance and Mrs. Cynthia Whitt, Paintsville and Mrs. Virginia Wolfe,
Ironton, OH, a sister, Mrs. Pierce Trimble, Beaver, OH, 12

after a brief illness. Mr. Houston was born in Perry County, OH August

of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Imogene Ward Houston; three sons,
Les Houston, Albuquerque, NM, Donald Ray Houston and Ralph Houston,
Prestonsburg; a daughter, Mrs. Janice Pelphrey; two half brothers, Amos

James E. McKenzie, 54, died April 6, in Mechanicsburg, OH. He was the
son of the late Eskel and Pina McKenzie, of Lowmansville. Mr. McKenzie
was married to Oneida Puckett McKenzie, formerly of Paintsville; and
had two sons, Gary Lee, Springfield, OH and Rod of Mechanicsburg. He
was a nephew of Bill McKenzie of Thealka. Funeral services were held
Monday, April 19, at Mechanicsburg with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Elbert Murray, 82, died Tuesday, April 25, in St. Anthony Hospital,
Columbus, OH. Mr. Murray was born Jan 12, 1896, in Johnson Co., the son
of Thomas and Mary Jane Kimbler Murray. He was a resident of Sitka, a
retired farmer, a member of Kerz Enterprise Baptist church and DAV No.
18. His wife, Oma Salyers Murray preceded him in death Nov 22, 1975.
Surviving are six sons, Paul Murray, Thomas Murray and Troy Ray Murray,
all of Columbus, Clarence Murray and Phillip Eugene Murray of
Springfield, and Robert Murray, Dayton; four daughters, Neva Guistrel

Lorraine Harris, Flat Gap; 24 grandchildren and four great

Edgar Preston, 77, died Thursday, April 10, in Paintsville Hospital.
Mr. Preston was born December 23, 1900, in Johnson County, the son of
Melvin and Lou Stacy Preston. He was a resident of Paintsville, a
retired miner and a member of the Church of Christ. He was preceded in
death by two wives, Norma Fletcher Preston and Gussie Burgess Preston.
Surviving are four sons, Escomb Preston, Billie Joe Preston, and Edgar
Preston, Jr., Dayton, and Maryln Preston, Flatwoods, three daughters,
Rebecca Wells, Paintsville, Doris Davis, Dayton, and Joyce Preston, St.
Clair Shores, MI; a sister, Lena May Maynard, Middleport, OH; 28
grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held

Trimble. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church and was
preceded in death by her husband, Byrd Preston, on Sep 25, 1962.

Hospital. Mr. Stambaugh was born in Johnson Co., Jan 15, 1923, the son
of Sam and Rebecca Lemaster Stambaugh. He was a resident of Sitka, a
disabled miner and a member of the Pentecostal Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife, Jewell McKenzie Stambaugh; five sons, Billy
Gene, Verlie Franklin, Bennie Darrell, Terry Glen and Timothy Hobert,
all of Sitka; five daughters, Wanda Jo Couch, Rita Fay Cantrell and

Rev. James H. Stugill, 61, died Wednesday, April 5. He was born July 2,
1916, in Johnson County, and was a resident of Auxier. Rev. Sturgill
was a retired miner, an ordained Freewill Baptist minister and a member
of DAV Chapter 18. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and
Norma Robinson Sturgill. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Wells Sturgill
who he married November 6, 1937, in Paintsville; a son, Sheldon (Budd)
Sturgill, Louisville, three daughters, Marlene Jarvis and Sharon Kay
Kershner, Ypsilanti, MI, and Emma Joyce Music, Westland, MI; two
brothers, Milford Sturgill, Coal Grove, OH, and Jack Sturgill, Tutor

Ray Turner, 91, died Friday, April 14, in the Paintsville Hospital
after an extended illness. Mr. Turner was born May 31, 1886, in Johnson
County, the son of John W. and Lou Wheeler Turner. He was a resident of
Turner Branch, a retired banker, a member of the United Baptist Church,
and Paintsville Masonic Lodge 381 F & AM and El Hasa Temple,
Ashland. His wife, Virgie Conley Turner preceded him in death November
6, 1973. Surviving are a son, Dr. John W. Turner, Paintsville, a
daughter, Mrs. Ruth Compton, Paintsville; seven grandchildren, twelve
great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Funeral

his son, W. D. Ward. Mr. Ward was born Oct 1, 1900, at Deboard, KY,
Martin Co., was a resident of Paintsville and a retired miner.
Surviving are two sons, W. D. Ward, Paintsville, and Charles David
Ward, Auxier; two daughters, Sarah Magadlene Williams, Knoxville, TN
and Betty Lou Bailey, Norris, TN; a sister, Lisa Newsome Deboard; 10
grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held
Thursday, April 27, in Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sam
Glenn officiating. Burial was in Mayo Memorial Cemetery at Paintsville
with Paintsville Funeral Home handling arrangements. Serving as
pallbearers were Lowell Pelphrey, Ronald Blair, Howard Hughes, Ray
Bailey, Sylvester Newsome and Danny Ward, Paintsville Herald,
