Willard Adams, 57, died Monday, April 23, in Paintsville Hospital after
a brief illness. Mr. Adams was born May 14, 1921 in Johnson County, the
son of the late Ross and Virgie Selvage Adams. He was a resident of
Paintsville. Surviving are his wife, Emogene Music Adams; two sons,
Willard Virgus Adams, Paintsville and Doug Adams, Columbus, OH; a step
son, Thomas Lee Castle, Nippa, three daughters, Phyliss Ward, Columbus,
Sheila Fairchild, Prestonsburg, and Margie Sexton, Paintsville; a step
daughter, Carolyn Sue Short, Franklin, OH and a half sister, Pauline
Adams. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 25, in
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the family

Eunice Branham, 62, died Wednesday, April 11, at her Paintsville Home.
Mrs. Branham was born June 17, 1915 in Johnson County, daughter of
James and Sara Huff Music. Surviving are her father, James Music, her
husband, lee Branham; a brother, Logan Music and sixteen half brothers
and sisters, Nancy Williamson, Jim Music, Elzie Music, James Music,
Demart Music, Brenda Grimm, Pauline Perry, Gertrude Music, Alfred
Music, Dallas Music, Linda Music, Robert Music, Donald Music, Melvin
Music, Elizabeth Music and Madge Music. Funeral services were held
Friday, April 13 at her home with Rev. Edward J. Young officiating.
Burial was in Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville, with

BUTCHER, John K. Jr.
1979
John K. Butcher, Jr., owner of the Big Sandy Valley Floral Company,
died Thursday, April 12, at University of Kentucky Medical Center. He
was a graduate of the John C. C. Mayo College, Georgetown College, and
attended the University of Medicine in Memphis, TN for two years. He
was a member of two honorary fraternities at Georgetown, in science and
mathematics, and played on the college baseball team. John assisted his
father in the lumber company and at this time was a member of the
Paintsville Board of Education, the Rotary Club, the Jaycees, and other
civic organizations. He moved to Louisville where he became a
supervisor at the Wood-Mosiac Co. He excelled in golf and in bowling,
becoming the captain of various teams, and winning many trophies for
his achievements. Survivors include his wife, Ada Campbell Butcher; a
son, Vernon Philby; a sister, Dr. Alpharetta Archer; two half sisters,
Linda Prater and Rose Lemaster and a half brother, Dr. L. K. Butcher of
New Orleans. Funeral services were held in Mayo Memorial Church on

Viva E. Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Blair, originally
from Pike County, passed away Monday, April 23, in Mercy Hospital in
San Diego, CA. She is survived by one son, Dr. Henry A. Campbell, Jr.,
of Prestonsburg and three daughters, Lula Mae Wilgus, Audrey Rosemary,
LaMothe, and Phyllis June Campbell, all of San Diego; six grandsons,
seven granddaughters, six great grandsons, nine great
granddaughters, and two great-great grandsons. Funeral services were

Riceville resident, Rodney Caudill, 26, died Friday, April 6. Mr.
Caudill was born February 6, 1953, in Johnson County, son of Mitchell
and Neva Caudill. Surviving in addition to his parents are his
wife, Darlene Lemaster Caudill; four brothers, Johnny Caudill,
Paintsville, Danny Caudill, U.S. Navy, Palmer Caudill and Jackie
Caudill, Oh; and a sister Wilma Eldridge, Paintsville. Funeral services

Wonnie Caudill, 69, died Saturday, April 7, at her Swamp Branch
residence after a brief illness. Mrs. Caudill was born may 11, 1910 in
Magoffin County, daughter of the late William Pierce and Ellene Blanton
Conley. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist church. Surviving are
two sons, Rev. Donald Caudill, Leander and Darwin Caudill, Hager Hill;
five daughters, Doris Ann Brown and Dorothy Ann May, Swamp Branch,
Daisy Ratliff, Turner Branch, Georgene Caudill, Tutor Key and Geraldine
Brown, Lexington; a brother, Lonzie Conley, Swamp Branch; 24
grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Tuesday, April 10 in Riceville Freewill Baptist church wit Revs. Herb
Arms and Richard Williams officiating. Burial was in Bayes Cemetery,

Pauline Lyon Daniel, 51, died Wednesday, April 11, in London, OH. Mrs.
Daniel was born December 23, 1927, in Johnson County, daughter of
Walter and Mary Bowens Lyon. She was a resident of Columbus, and was
preceded in death by her husband, Grady Daniel in 1959. Surviving are
two daughters. Brenda Griffith, Lowmansville, and Linda Mounts,
Columbus, three brothers, Bobby Lyons and Orville Lyons, Columbus, and
Lester Lyons, Thealka, six sisters, Irene Brown, Plain City, OH, Maxine
Wilson, Florida, Ruby Craven and Stella Cremans, Columbus, Deloris

Mamie Marshall Frederick, 87, died Thursday, April 12, in Paintsville
Hospital after an extended illness. Born May 15, 1891, in Fleming
County, she was the daughter of Martin and Francis Welch Marshall. Mr.
Frederick was a resident of Paintsville and a member of the Christian
Church. His wife, Lora Frederick, preceded him in death. Surviving are
a daughter, Mrs. W. D. (Doc) Blair, Paintsville. Funeral services were
held Saturday, April 14, in Central Christian Church, Cynthiana, with
Rev. Paul Stamper officiating. Burial was in Paris Cemetery, Paris,

Herschell Gullett, 73, Route 5, Lucasville, died at 2 a.m.
Saturday April 28, 1979 in the Gayhart Nursing Home after a
lengthy illness. His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Zion
Church of Christ in Christian Union, Camp Creek. The Rev. Raymond
O'Brien will officiate and burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Howe Co. Funeral Home, Piketon, 5-9 tonight.
Born Nov. 18, 1905 in Johnson County, KY., he was the son of Taylor and
Kathryn Brown Gullett. He was a retired construction worker. On May 14,
1927 he was married to the former Edna Sims who survives. Also
surviving are a son, Merrill Ray, Route 5, Lucasville; four daughters,
Mrs. Pete (Wilma Jean) Aills, Miamisburg, Mrs. Herschel (Eileen) Smith,
Mrs. Gary (Margaret) Spriggs and Mrs. Olive Locke, all of Route 5,
Lucasville; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; four brothers,
Frank Gullett, Las Vegas, Herman and Milburn Gullett, Largo, Fla., and
Earl Gullett, Portsmouth; and two sisters, Mrs. Evalena Lagley,
Columbus, and Mrs. Gus (Mamie) Wenger, Columbus. He was

Mr. Hall was born in West Van Lear, September 10, 1927 and was a
resident of Bellville. Surviving are his parents, Walbridge and Lizzie

William, Robert, and Michael of Bellville; a daughter, Donna Hall of

HATCHER, Thomas

Funeral services for Thomas F. Hatcher, 69, former Floyd County
resident who died April 30, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, St. Petersburg,
FL, were conducted May 3 from the chapel of the Thomas J. Brett Funeral
Home in St. Petersburg. A son of Mrs. Maude S. Hatcher of Hindman and
the late W. T. “Sip” Hatcher, onetime Floyd County tax
commissioner, he was born at Thelma in Johnson County, but spent his
boyhood at Lackey. He and his family were resident of Wayland when they
moved in 1958 to St. Petersburg. Mr. Hatcher attended the Mayo School
at Paintsville, in early manhood was an engineer for the Kentucky State
Highway Department, was postmaster at Wayland for many years and at his
retirement three years ago was associated in Florida with the West
Coast Land Company. He was a past master of James W. Alley Masonic
Lodge at Wayland, was a member of the Scottish Rite, Covington and a
charter member of the Museum of Fine Arts. Besides his mother, he is
survived by his widow, Mrs. Lassia Martin Hatcher, of St. Petersburg;
one son, Robert L. Hatcher, Hampton Bays, NY, a sister, Mrs. Beckham
Combs, Hindman, and two grandchildren. Area residents who attended his

Mrs. Phoebe Howard, 91, died Saturday, April 21, in Highland Regional
Medical Center. She was born Dec 13, 1887 in Magoffin County, daughter
of B. W. and Cornelia Howard Higgins. She was a resident of Paintsville
and a member of the First Baptist church. Her husband, Newton Paul
Howard, preceded her in death in December 1926. Surviving are two
daughters, Gladys Howard, Paintsville, and Mrs. Leonard M. Spencer of
Boca Raton, FL; a sister, Mrs. Molly Stafford, Madisonville; a brother,
J. Wide Higgins, Salyersville; and a grandson. Funeral services were

Joe Thomas Hunter, 50, died Sunday, April 29 at Good Samaritan Hospital
in Dayton. Mr. Hunter was born April 4, 1929 in Johnson County, the son
of Harry and Mollie Fraley Hunter, of Stambaugh. He was a resident of
Dayton at the time of his death and was a shipping clerk at Delco Tire
of Dayton. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving

a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA District 30. Born March

Elizabeth R. Music, 82, died Friday, April 20, at her Auxier home,
after a brief illness. She was born June 27, 1896, in Salyersville,
daughter of Marion and Sarah Blair Rice. Mrs. Music was a member of
Auxier Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband,
George W. Music, November 18, 1971, and a daughter, Thelma Wells.

Charles Henry Osborne, 40, died Tuesday, April 17, in Paintsville
Hospital. He was the son of Bill Osborne and Ethel Osborne Fannin and
was born January 21, 1939 in Johnson County. Mr. Osborne was a resident
of Red Bush and self-employed as a restaurant owner. Surviving in
addition to his mother are his wife, Norma Carter Osborne; a son,
Charles Gavin Osborne, Red Bush; two daughters, Carter Lynn Osborne and
Mitchell Webb Osborne, of Louisville; his step father, George Fannin,

Julia Ratliff, 78, died Thursday, April 19, in St. Mary’s Hospital. She
was born July 10, 1900, daughter of Henry and Katie VanHoose Boyd. She
was a resident of Louisa and a member of the United Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard Ratliff of Moundsville, WV; 3
daughters, Margie Kestner of West Van Lear, Murril Patrick of Columbus,
and Mary A. Miller of Canal Winchester, OH; a son, Henry H. Ratliff of
Moundsville, WV; 2 sisters, Lena Brown of Lucasville, OH and Jannie
Boyd of Richardson; 27 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren 2 great-

ROBERTS, Dr. Thomas
1920-1979
Dr. Thomas L. Roberts, 58, died Thursday, April 19, in Louisville at
the home of his son. He was born June 23, 1920, in Georgia, son of
Thomas S. and Lou Foy Vickers Roberts. Dr. Roberts, a dentist, was a
resident of Wittensville and a member of the Methodist Church. He was a
pilot in the Army Air Corp entering in May 1942, where he served in the
European-African Middle East Theatre and earned three stars on the
American Defense Ribbon, the distinguished flying cross with three oak
leaf clusters, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He entered the
University of Louisville dental school and graduated in 1949. Surviving
in addition to his mother are his wife, Mary Archer Roberts, a son,
Thomas Roberts, Jr., Louisville and a daughter, Mrs. A. A. Bartlett of
Vero Beach, FL. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 22, in
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David P. Shockey

Ray Webb, 62, died Wednesday, April 25, at his Martha home after an
extended illness. Mr. Webb was born Aug 14, 1916 in Morgan County, son
of Cornelius and Martha Wheeler Webb. He was a retired merchant, a
member of the Enterprise Baptist Church, and a veteran of World War II
where he served in the Navy. Surviving are his wife, Mary Brown Webb;

two step sons, Elder Jerry Brown, Relief, and Robie Lee Brown, Martha;
a step daughter, Mrs. Amanda Hamilton, Aberdeen, OH; a brother, Don

WELLS, Nancy (Wells)
1907-1979
Nancy Wells, 72, died Tuesday, April 17 in Highlands Regional Medical
center. She was born in Johnson County, Feb 19, 1907 daughter of Noah
and Louise Butcher Wells. She was a member of Auxier Freewill Baptist
Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Caleb (Doc) Wells, Feb
8, 1966. Surviving are three daughters, Vivian Caudill, Auxier, Donna
Blair, West Van Lear, and Wilma McClure, Allen; two brothers, Orville
Wells and Ed Wells, Auxier; five sisters, Sally Hall, Paintsville,
Beatrice Fitch, Vernie Auxier and Josie Robinson, East Point and Berta
Adkins, Van Lear; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral
services were held Saturday, April 21 in Auxier Freewill Baptist church
with Doug Burkett and Phil Fraley officiating. Burial was in Ford Gap
Cemetery, Auxier, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home handling

WHITE, Fred C.
1896-1979
Fred C. White, 82, died Thursday, April 26 in Paintsville Hospital
after a brief illness. He was born October 4, 1896, in Wood County, WV,
son of Daniel and Sarah Renner White. He was a resident of Paintsville
for the last 32 years, a member of the First Methodist Church, a
veteran of World War I, a member of the DAV, and a member of local 452
United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and
Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada. Mr. White was a
plumbing, heating, and electric contractor in Paintsville for many
years. Surviving are his wife, Mae Rigsby White; a daughter, Sara Beth
case, Buffalo Grove, IL, a son Lester Lynn White, Indianapolis, IN; 4
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Burial was in Highland
Memorial Park, Staffordsville, with Paintsville Funeral Home handling

WILLIAMS, Frank
1898-1979
Frank Williams, 81, died Saturday, April 21, died in River View Nursing
Home, Prestonsburg, after an extended illness. He was born March
23, 1898, in Magoffin County, son of George and Elizabeth Jenkins
Williams. He was a resident of Meally, a retired employee of
Consolidated Coal Company, and a member of the United Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lorena Howard Williams; 3 sons, Beecher of Van
Lear, Eugene of Mt. Ephraim of NJ and Hubert of Columbus; 2 daughters,
Mrs. Dorothy Edmunds of Ashville, OH and Mrs. Hazel Stapleton of Tutor
Key; 4 brothers, Elder Lloyd Williams of Staffordsville, Lundy Williams
of Columbus, OH Robert Williams of Meally and Russell Williams of
Fairborn; 29 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Funeral services
were held Monday, April 23, in Buffalo United Baptist Church with
Elders Elzie Banks, Florida Lyons, and Ervin Preston officiating.
Burial was in Williams Cemetery, Meally, with Paintsville Funeral Home
