1935-1983
Betty R. Wells Barber, 47, died April 12 in Highlands Regional Medical
Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Barber was a resident of
Paintsville and a member of the Catholic Church. She was born August
15, 1935 in Johnson County, the daughter of Charles J. and Elizabeth
Rice Wells. Surviving are two sons, James Curtis Barber, Jr., and James
David Barber; both of Jeffersonville, IN; three daughters, Mrs.
Elizabeth C. Redden and Virginia R. Barber, Jeffersonville, and Adele
M. Barber, Paintsville; a brother, Charles C. Wells, Paintsville and a
half sister, Mrs. Margaret Hernandez, Paintsville; and two
grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 14 in Jones-Preston
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Frank Osburg and Terry Jones officiating.

BLANTON, George
1893-1983
George Blanton, 59, died April 20, in his Newark, NJ home. Mr. Blanton
was born September 8, 1893 in Johnson County, the son of Alex Blanton
and Laura Blanton Pelphrey. He was a retired steel worker and a member
of the Baptist Church. His wife, Virgie Rice Blanton, preceded him in
death. Surviving are a son, George L. Blanton, Bon Aire, GA; two
daughters, Mrs. Olivia Campbell, Vermillion, OH, and Mrs. Lillyan Lee,
Newark; two half brothers, Brooks Pelphrey, Manila, and Bert Pelphrey,
Ypsilanti, MI; two half sisters, Mrs. Donnie Tackett, Staffordsville,
and Mrs. Grace Hitchcock, Oil Springs; three grandchildren and four
great grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 25 in Paintsville
Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Lonza Reed and B. C. Ferguson
officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at Volga under the

Flat Gap resident May Colvin Blanton, 76, died April 7 in Riverview
Manor Nursing Home, Prestonsburg, after an extended illness. Born March
26, 1907, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of J. H. and Alice
Fairchild Colvin. Surviving are her husband, Jim Blanton, who she
married February 21, 1923; three daughters, Faye McGee, Columbus, OH,
Phyllis Gamble, and Jo Ann Capps, Flat Gap; two brothers, Manford
Colvin, East Point and Tom Colvin, Lucasville, OH; two sisters, Sissie
Bailey, Jackson, OH and Mollie Hitchcock, Lucasville; seven
grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
April 10 in Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel with Elders J. T. Bailey
and Eual McKenzie officiating. Burial was in Williams Cemetery, Oils

BRICKLEY, Samuel
1913-1983
Elder Samuel C. Brickey, 69, died April 19 in St. Mary’s Hospital,
Huntington, WV. He was born May 10, 1913 in Boyd County, the son of
Daniel Martin and Naomi Horne Brickey. Mr. Brickey was a resident of
Barboursville, WV, a carne operator for Huntington Alloys and a member
of the River United Baptist Church where he served as clerk. Surviving
are his wife, Ora Beatrice Walters Brickey, who he married August 28,
1935; a son, Harold Gene Brickey, Ona, WV, a daughter, Shirlene Fregia,
Arizona; two sisters, Gladys Knapp, Oregon, and Orpha Holley, Arizona;
five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were
held April 22 in River United Baptist Church with B. C. Ferguson, Cecil
Murray, and Charles Price officiating. Burial was in White Chapel
Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, WV under the direction of the Preston

Maggie Cantrell, 64, died April 25 in U K Medical Center, Lexington.
Mrs. Cantrell was a resident of Paintsville. She was born March 10,
1919, in Jenkins, the daughter of Cal and Ollie Bowens Sanders. Her
husband, Avis Cantrell, preceded her in death in 1977. Surviving are
three sons, Fredrick Cantrell, Hager Hill, Johnny Cantrell, Front
Royal, VA and Rodney Cantrell, West Van Lear; a daughter, Gloria Hall,
Van Lear; three brothers, Tommy Sanders, Chattanooga, TN, Wise Sanders,
Dayton, OH, and Beecher Sanders, Baltimore, MD; a sister, Dorothy Webb,
Neon, KY, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services
were held April 28 in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Roger
VanHoose officiating. Burial was in family cemetery at West Van Lear.

Mrs. Viola Conley, 79, died April 16 in Paintsville Hospital after an
extended illness. Born October 28, 1903, in Johnson County, she was a
daughter of Alonzo and Arminta Tackett Conley. She was a resident of
Paintsville and a member of the Rockhouse Freewill Baptist Church for
61 years. Surviving are her husband, Elmer Conley, who she married
November 13, 1924; a son, NEvil Conley, Springfield, OH; six daughters,
Allene Mason, Isonville, Loretta Jean Wheeler, Catlettsburg, Fannie
Fern Baldwin, Springfield, Betty Sue Conley, Judith Crider and Brenda
Blanton, all of Paintsville, a sister, Beulah Griffith, Catlettsburg;
19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
April 19 in Rockhouse Freewill Baptist Church with Revs.Richard
Williams, John F. Ratliff and Norman Roberts, Jr. officiating. Burial
was in Conley Cemetery, Rockhouse, under the direction of the

DELONG, Pearl (Coldiron)
1896-1983
Funeral services were held April 11 in Jones-Preston Funeral Home
Chapel for Pearl Delong, 86. Mrs. Delong died April 8 in St. Claire
Medical Center, Morehead, after an extended illness. She was born April
28, 1896 in Rowan County, the daughter of Abide and Amanda Warren
Coldiron. She was a resident of Morehead and a member of the Missionary
Baptist Church. Her husband, J. H. Delong, preceded her in death July
28, 1963. Surviving are a son, Dr. Henry Delong, Louisville; a
daughter, Marguerite Kascle; Scottsdale, AZ; seven grandchildren and
seven great grandchildren. Dr. Charles Milam officiated at services

DUTTON, Virgil
1919-1983
Virgil Dutton, 63, died April 24 in Louisa Humana Hospital. Mr. Dutton
was born October 16, 1919 in Johnson County, the son of Ben and Cynthia
Perry Dutton. He was a resident of Paintsville, an employee of the
Kentucky Department of Highways, a member of Pigeon Freewill Baptist
Church and Paintsville Lodge No. 381 F & AM. Surviving are his
wife, Leora Jewell Cantrell Dutton, who he married April 3, 1946; a
son, Virgil Leslie “Butch” Dutton of Stambaugh; a daughter, Anna Jane
Beam, Portsmouth, OH; and a sister, Mary Daniel, Wabash, IN. Funeral
services were held April 27 in Pigeon Freewill Baptist Church with
Charles Stapleton and Henry Skaggs officiating. Burial was in Johnson
County Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville, under the direction of the
Preston Funeral Home. Active pallbearers were Johnnie Daniel, Bill
Williams, Bert Williams, Doug Murphy, Joshua Daniel and Eugene Daniel.
Honorary pallbearers were Clifford Daniel, Kenny Daniel and Charles

EALEY, Theodore

Theodore “Sid” Ealey, 78, died April 30 in Paintsville Hospital. Mr.
Ealey was born November 5, 1904 in Johnson County, the son of Clint and
Laura Blevins Ealey. He was a resident of Staffordsville and a retired
driller. His wife, Rouie Meade Ealey, preceded him in death May 20,
1981. Funeral services were held May 2 in Staffordsville Freewill
Baptist Church with John Frank Ratliff and Lowell King officiating.
Burial was in Staffordsville Church Cemetery with Jones-Preston Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements. Serving as pallbearers were Jesse
McCarty, Charles Cantrell, Has Blanton, Oak Blanton, Shafter Salyer and

Lutisha Lynn Fraley, infant daughter of James and Debra Ramey Fraley of
Prestonsburg, died April 29 in Highlands Regional Medical Center.
Surviving are her grandparents, John and Judy Ramey and Clara Fraley.
Graveside services were held May 1 in the family cemetery in
Paintsville with John Meade officiating. Jones-Preston Funeral Home was

Funeral services were held April 19 in Jones-Preston Funeral Home
Chapel for Fred, “Yella Cat” Goble, 71. Mr. Goble died April 16 at his
Auxier home. He was born February 3, 1912, in Floyd County, the son of
Jim and Florence Wells Goble and was a retired miner. Surviving are his
wife, Opal Goble Goble; a son, Freddie Lee Goble, Auxier, a daughter,
Cleda Lawson, Prestonsburg; two brothers, Paris Goble, Auxier and Ted
Goble, Prestonsburg; three sisters, Cora Wells, Opal McKenzie and
Dottie Perry, Auxier; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Jennie Grim, 85, died Monday, April 11 in Lexington. Mrs. Grim was born
in Johnson County, December 23, 1897, the daughter of Joseph and Sarah
Helton Daniels. She was a resident of Nippa. She was preceded in death
by two husbands Victor Sadler, 1974 and Milt Grim, 1980. Surviving are
two sons, Victor Sadler, Jr., Lima, OH, and Joseph Sadler, DeGraff, OH,
two daughters, Marlene Sadler, Columbus, OH and Pauline Kelsey, Oil
Springs, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral

Funeral services were held May 3 in Fishtrap United Baptist Church,
Staffordsville, for Haden Gullett, 54. Mr. Gullett died April 30 at the
home of his sister, Mrs. Langley Williams of Oil Springs. He was born
September 1, 1928 in Magoffin County, the son of Lee and Amanda Hill
Gullett. He was a retired veteran of the U. S. Army who served in the
Korean Ward. Surviving are three brothers, Burl Gullett, Ashland, Roy
Gullett, Fairborn, OH, Joe Gullett, Clarksville, TN; and three sisters,
Ethel Williams, Oil Springs, Tennie Fyffe, West Liberty, and Belvis
Wright, Isom. Elders Lonza Reed and Eual McKenzie officiated at
services with Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Rosa Robinson Hayes, 88, died April 8 in King’s Daughters’ Hospital,
after an extended illness. Born January 28, 1895, in Morgan County, she
was the daughter of Manford and Ellen Lemaster Collins. She was a
resident of Ashland and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hayes was preceded in death by two husbands John W. Robinson,
March 31, 1941 and Linzie Hayes, November 29, 1967. Surviving are a
son, John W. Robinson, Jr., Horsehead, NY, three step sons, Robert
Hayes, Wellston, OH, Charles Hayes, Sanford, FL and George Hayes,
Ashland, four daughters, Irene Patrick, Salyersville, Edna VanHoose and
Imogene Osborne, Paintsivlle, and Anna L. Meadows, Ashland; two step
daughters, Lorena Small, Newark, OH, and Mary Kruer, Centerville, OH;
three sisters, Ducie Branham and Ethel Patton, Ashland, and Callie
Cantrell, Sitka; 19 grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren, 27 great
grandchildren and several step great grandchildren. Funeral services
were held April 10, in Third Street Freewill Baptist Church with Revs.
C. C. Hall and Bill Meadows officiating. Burial was in Mayo Cemetery,
Paintsville under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.

was born March 13, 1936 in Johnson County, the son of the late Amos and

Lora Music, 77, died April 5 in Lucasville, OH, following an extended
illness. Born May 20, 1905, in Johnson County, she was the daughter of
W. F. and Stella Sturgill Green. She was a resident of East Point and a
member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are her husband, D. Mart
Music; a daughter, Loretta Osborne, Lucasville; and a brother, Ray
Green, London, OH; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Charles Thomas Rowland, 62, died April 30 in Medina Community Hospital.
He was born at Whitehouse and had been a resident of Litchfield, OH for
31 years. He was a veteran of World War II and was self-employed as a
bricklayer. Surviving are his wife, Edna M. Rowland; his father, Fred
Rowland of Whitehouse; three daughters, Sandra, at home, Charlotte of
LaGrange, OH, and Barbara Call, Medina, OH; three sisters, Flora
Waddle, Lodi, OH, Ida Ann Stamper, Litchfield and Cora Gwinn,
Paintsville; seven brothers, Herbert of Springfield, OH, Armstrong of
West Salem, OH, Henry of Thelma, Claude of Whitehouse, Burns and Irvin
of Litchfield and Issac of Paintsville. Funeral services were held May
3 in Walte & Son Memorial Home with Pastor Larry Leonard

Hospital. Mr. Sparks was born February 9, 1900, in Johnson County, the

Highlands Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mrs.
Stafford was born February 5, 1906 in Johnson County, a daughter of
William and Julia Rice Taylor. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist
Church. Her husband, Ray G. Stafford, preceded her in death. Surviving
are four sons, Billy of Wakita, OK, Jerry of Nippa, Bruce of Good Hope,
OH, and Tom of Frankfort, OH; three daughters, Sarah Ann Glenn, Latham,

Estella Staniford, 59, died April 12 in a Huntington, WV hospital
following an extended illness. Born April 11, 1923 in Johnson County,
she was the daughter of the late Ben and Sally Dutton Crum. Mrs.
Staniford was a resident of Wayne, WV. Her husband, Warren G.
Staniford, preceded her in death November 23, 1981. Surviving are two
sons, David Staniford of Prichard, WV, and Chief Warrant Officer
Terry L. Baker of Ft. Leavenworth, KS; a daughter, Mary Ann Mathis,
Wayne, WV, three brothers, Ben Crum, Jr., Wayne, Melvin Crum, Union
Lake, MI, and James L. Crum, Paintsville; two sisters, Pearl Jordan,
Eleanor, WV and Anna Brakes, Ortonville, MI; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held April 14 in Antioch United Baptist Church,
Wayne, with Clarence Mathis, Jr., Richard Preston, and Flem A. Arrowood

Mrs. Joyce Fairchild Thomas, 53, died Friday, April 8 in U. K. Medical
Center in Lexington. Born August 5, 1929, in Pike County, she was the
daughter of the late James Fairchild and Essie Adkins Fairchild. She
was a resident of West Van Lear, a nurse, and a member of the Church of
Christ. Surviving in addition to her mother are two sons, James William
Perkowski, Clarksville, TN and Jeffrey Lowell Perkowski, West Van Lear;
a daughter, Jessica Scurlock, Florissant, MO; a sister, Dr. Jean
Fairchild, Spring Lake, MI and four grandchildren. Funeral services
were held April 11 in Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Scott

TRIMBLE, Carroll
1906-1983
Services for Carroll G. Trimble, 76, of Indianapolis, IN, were held at
1 p.m. Monday, April 11 in Shirley Brothers East Chapel. He died
Thursday, April 7 in his home. A native of Johnson County, he was born
December 8, 1906, the son of Carl and Laura Picklesimer Trimble of
Barnetts Creek. His wife, Bertha Centers Trimble, preceded him in death
in August 1976. He was a livestock broker for 30 years, retired in
1965. He was also a former Marion County, Indiana Deputy Sheriff. He
lived in Indianapolis 50 years and was a member of East 10th Street
Church of God. Survivors include a sister, Mae Hall, and three
brothers, Nelson, Rucker and Sidney Trimble, and many nieces and

born November 6, 1921 in Johnson County, the daughter of Millard and
