Don Bayes, 85, died April 29 in Hall Medical Center following an
extended illness. Born April 6, 1899, in Johnson County, he was the son
of Leander and Dora Estep Bayes. A resident of West Van Lear, he was a
member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Nancy
Blair Bayes; two daughters, Mrs. Loretta Carpenter, Ashland, and Mrs.
Peggy Butcher, Catlettsburg, three brothers, Woodrow Bayes,
Chillicothe, OH, Gene Bayes, Ocala, FL, and Buzz Bayes, Baltimore, MD,
three sisters, Neva Rice, Raceland, Thelma Hughes, Ashland, and Venice
Jones, Paintsville, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be
held today, Wednesday, May 2 in Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel with
Elder J. T. Bailey and Rev. Cecil Sherman officiating. Burial will be

Lizzie Booth, 90, died April 16 in Hall Medical Center. Born December
19, 1893 in Johnson County, she was the daughter of Valentine and
Rachel Fannin Booth, and a resident of River. Funeral services were

Funeral services were held April 8 in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel
for Ethel Bowling, 61. Mrs. Bowling died April 5 in Hall Medical
Center. She was born September 28, 1922 in Johnson County, the daughter
of Curtis Webb and Lennie Blevins. She was a resident of Stambaugh.
Surviving are her husband, Marcus Bowling; four sons, James Ronald
Bowling, Stambaugh, Donald Ray Bowling, Tram, Ricky Bowling,
Prestonsburg, and Marcus Bowling, Gogian, IN; four brothers, Curtis,
Clyde and Dennis Bowling, Wabash, and Hobart Bowling, Williamsport; a
sister, Billie Music, a step brother, Clifford of Houston, TX, five
half sisters, Elizabeth Music, Wabash, Faye Hughes and Mae Rudd of
Neon, Marlene Coleman, and Patty Pack, Van Lear; and five

BURCHELL, Paul

Paul Vernon Burchell, 47, died April 13 in Cabell-Huntington Hosptial.
Born October 18, 1936 in Floyd County, he was the son of the late
Sidual Burchell and Ethel Fannin Burchell. A resident of Van Lear, he
retired from the U. S. military and was a member of Paintsville Church
of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Diane Delong Burchell, who he
married October 22, 1962; and five sons, Paul Lloyd, Brian, Blake, Todd
and Marlen Burchell, all at home; two brothers, Denvil Burchell,
Cincinnati, OH, and Alger Burchell, Loraine, OH; and four sisters,
Janice Thomas, Ashland, Shelby Delong, Cincinnati, Glema Jennings, Van
Lear, and Delores Murphy, Louisville. Funeral services were held April
15 in Paintsville Church of Christ with Paul Daniels and Jerry Scott
officiating. Burial was in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery,
Staffordsville, under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home.

BUTCHER, Curt

Services for Curt Butcher, 73, of Columbus, OH, were held at
Schindewolf- Stevens-Stout Funeral Home by the Rev. Victor Poser with
burial in Grove Cemetery. A graveside military service was conducted by
V. F. W. Post 3333. He died at the home of Charles and Phyllis Byers.
He was born July 31, 1910 in Johnson County, to William and Amanda
Blaxton Butcher. Surviving are a son, Ervin Curtis, Jr., of Rock
Island, IL and a daughter, Linda Keen of Little Rock, Ark. a number of
grandchildren; four sisters, Opal Columber, Elsie Horne, Ivory McQuown,
and Mrs. Charles (Phyllis) Byers, all of Kenton; and a brother, John of

Jimmy Baker and Jerry Smith officiated at funeral services in Jones-
Preston Funeral Home chapel for Clarence H. Carter, 64. Mr. Carter died
April 16 at his Auxier home. He was born December 21, 1919 in Harlan
County, the son of Luther and Monnie Palmer Carter. Surviving are his
wife, Geneva Felty Carter; three sons, Clarence Carter, Winchester,
Richard Carter, Independence, and Russell Carter, Columbus, OH; two
daughters, Lorna Gayle Osborne, Royal Oak, MI, and Shelia Mooney, Van
Lear; and two sisters, Beatrice Vial, Centerville, OH and Edna Baldwin,

West Van Lear resident Danny Ray Cecil, 20, died April 3 in Hall
Medical Center as the result of an automobile accident. Born June 6,
1963 in Fayette County, he was a 1962 graduate of Johnson Central High
School where he played varsity football and baseball for four years.
Surviving are his parents, Rex Donald Cecil, Sr., and Barbara Cooper
Cecil of West Van Lear; his wife, Karen Jean Scott Cecil; a brother,
Rex Cecil, Jr., Eastern; three sisters, Vicky Cecil, Taylor, MI, Penny
Cecil, Paintsville, and Kathy Spears, Swamp Branch; paternal
grandmother, Mary Cecil of Michigan; and maternal grandparents, Virgil
and Edith Cooper of Lexington. Funeral services were held April 6 in
Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Paul Joseph and Herman Joseph

Mrs. Irene Hay Cottle, 62, died April 24 at her Keaton home. Mrs.
Cottle was born November 25, 1921 in Johnson County, the daughter of
Will and Caroline Clark McCarty. She was a member of the Christian
Union Church. Surviving are her husband, Douglas Cottle; a daughter,
Mrs. Carol McKenzie of Keaton; a brother, Espie McCarty of Oil Springs,

Oil Springs resident, Mary Elizabeth Crace, 89, died April 17, in Hall
Medical Center. Mrs. Crace was born December 16, 1894 in Johnson
County, the daughter of Harry and Rose Helton Ward. Her husband ,
Carl Crace, preceded her in death in 1957. Surviving are 3 sons,
Harry Crace of Oil Springs, David Crace of Columbus, OH, and Cecil
Crace of Hazard; a daughter, Edith Carol Norton of Phoenix, AZ; 9
grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held April
20 in Oil Springs Methodist Church with Chet Compton officiating.

Jackie Dee Daniel, 14, died Sunday, April 29, in an accident at his
home in Fuget. Services were held Wednesday, May 2. The son of Dan
Daniel and Gwendolyn McKenzie Cantrell, he was born in Floyd County,
July 19, 1969. In addition to his parents, he is survived by Scott and
Jerry Daniel, at home, and Dana Daniel, of West Liberty, Maternal
grandparents are Dolpha and Della McKenzie, and paternal grandparents
are Walter and Mentie Daniel. Elders Thirel Daniel, Boyd Meadows, and
Joe Cantrell officiated at services in the Lebanon United Baptist
church. Burial was in the Daniel Cemetery at Sand Lick. The

Mary Jane Daniels, 89, died April 2, in Madison Elms Nursing Home,
London, OH, following an extended illness. Mrs. Daniels was born Nov
21, 1894 in River, the daughter of Thomas and Victoria Castle. She was
a former resident of Plumwood, OH and a member of the Nippa Freewill
Baptist Church. Her husband, James A. Daniel, preceded her in death.
Surviving are six sons, Garner, Clarence, and William Thomas Daniels,
of London, James Jr., and Bob Daniels, Marysville, OH, and Randall
Daniels, of Mechanicsburg, OH; a daughter, Mrs. Talmadge (Lillian)

Funeral services were held April 7 for Elisha Jackson, 87. Mr. Jackson
died April 4, at the home of his daughter in Urbana, OH, after an
extended illness. He was born Jauanry 15, 1897 in Johnson County, the
son of Isaiah and Sarah Elizabeth Saylor Jackson. He was a retired
miner and a former deputy jailor. His wife, Mollie Blair Jackson,
preceded him in death April 25, 1972. Surviving are three sons, Robert

James N. (Bizz) Jr., 63, retired coal operator and lifetime resident of
Johnson County, Paintsville, died Sunday, April 29, in the Paul B. Hall
Medical Center. Born April 11, 1921 in Paintsville, he was the son of
James N. and Victoria Salyers Meek. A resident of Paintsville, he was
president of Victoria Mining Company and Clarion Enterprises. He
attended Paintsville City Schools and was a graduate of Riverside
Military Academy in Gainesville, GA. He served one term as Trial
Commissioner for the Johnson County Circuit Court. Surviving are his
wife, Reva May Meek; a son and daughter, James N. Meek, III and Adele
Victoria Meek, both of Paintsville. Funeral services were held May 2 in
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lindsey Davis officiating.

Russell Ratliff, 70, died April 10, at his Barnetts Creek home. Mr.
Ratliff was born July 17, 1913 in Johnson County, the son of Dennie and
Rhoda Blair Ratliff. He was a retired coal miner. His wife, Vernie
Rowland Ratliff, preceded him in death. Surviving are a son, Charles
Ratliff, Barnetts Creek, three sisters, Bessie Blair, Barnetts Creek,
Dessie Spradlin, Prestonsburg, and Tressie Robinson, Hager Hill,; five
brothers, Herschell, Hysel, Addison, Hebern and Guy Blair, Barnetts

REED, Rufus
1984
Rufus M. Reed, a self taught naturalist, whose columns ran for many
years in The Paintsville Herald and other Eastern Kentucky papers, died
April 4 at age 88. Mr. Reed, a lifetime resident of Lovely, in Martin
County, was a former school teacher, and for many years was county
surveyor in Martin County. He had been in failing health recently, and
was living in a nursing home in West Virginia prior to his death.
Despite, his health problems, he continued to write, submitting his
last nature column to the Martin Countian just two weeks ago. A public
library bearing his name was established in recent years at Lovely.
Among his survivors are five children, including Harold Reed, district
highway engineer, from Elkhorn City, and his youngest son, Bob Reed, a
brigadier general stationed at Hampton Roads, VA. Services were held
Saturday, April 7, at the Lovely Freewill Baptist Church. Burial was in
the Caney Cemetery at Pilgrim, on Caney Creek, site of many of his

Mildred Shields, 69, died April 5 in Logan General Hospital. A resident
of Lower Trace, Holden, WV, she was born August 20, 1914 in Van Lear.
She was the daughter of Carrie Walker Music of Lawson, WV and the late
Henry Music. A former clerk for Island Creek Company Store in
Holden, she was a member of the Holden Community Church. Also surviving
are her husband, Brady Shields; a sister, Ollie DeRosa of Colonia, NJ,
and a brother, Warren Music, West Carrollton, OH. Funeral services were
held April 7 in Honaker Funeral Home with burial in Forest Lawn

Funeral services were held May 1 in for Charlie Stapleton, 61, in
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Stapleton died April 28 in
Dayton, OH. He was the son of Marion and Minnie Cooper Stapleton.
Surviving are his wife, Savanah Stapleton; a step son, David Donavan; a

Sonny C. Stapleton, 78, died April 19 at his Red Bush home. Mr.
Stapleton was born April 23, 1905, in Johnson County, the son of Johnny
and Sarah Jane McKenzie Stapleton. He was a retired employee of Ashland
Oil Company. Surviving are his wife, Icie Burchett Stapleton;
three sons, Rex Stapleton of Dayton, OH, Virgil Stapleton of St. Paris,
Oh and Johnny Stapleton of Phoneton, OH; four daughters, Belvenell Hill
of Dayton, Effie Caudill of Thelma, Peggy Holbrook of Red Bush and
Betty Lemaster of Hickory, TN; 16 grandchildren and 4 great
grandchildren. Funeral services held April 22 in Paintsville Funeral
Home Chapel with Elders J.T. Bailey and Scottie Williams officiating.

Whitehouse resident Janet Lucille Tackett, 41, died April 29 in UK
Medical Center, Lexington. Mrs. Tackett was born January 23, 1943, in
Madison County, OH. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church.
Surviving are her parents, Walter and Bessie McDuffet Deneca; her
husband, James O. Tackett; three sons, Teddy L. Thompson, Losscatus,
CA, Tommy Thompson, London, OH, and Robie Tackett, Whitehouse; four
daughters, Diana Price, Johns Creek, Sheila and Tanya Tackett,
Whitehouse and Gina Meade, Paintsville; a brother, Walter Deneca, Jr.,
Washington; two sisters, Sue Bennette and Cathy Roby, London, OH; and
six grandchildren. Funeral services were held today, Wednesday, May 2,
at 1 p.m. in Pentecostal Church of Christ. Rev. Jerry Castle will
officiate. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Whitehouse with

Funeral services were held April 20 in Jones-Preston Funeral home
Chapel for Minnie Tackett, 83. Mrs. Tackett died April 17 in Hall
Medical Center. She was born Nov 20, 1900 in Johnson County, the
daughter of Blackburn and Stella Adams Conley and was a resident of Van
Lear. Her husband, Jess Tackett, preceded her in death Nov 9, 1980.
Surviving are four sons, Bill Tackett, Van Lear, Ed Tackett,
Cincinnati, OH, Fred and Clarence Tackett, Wabash; a daughter, Mrs.
Stella Bowling, Van Lear; five brothers, Sherman, Henry and Floyd
Conley, all of Carey, OH, Wade Conley, Dayton, OH and Wayne Conley,
Falcon, KY; three sisters, Betty Morehart, Sina Tackett,
Staffordsville, and Mamie Skaggs of Van Lear; 21 grandchildren; 42
great grandchildren; and 6 great- great grandchildren. Bruce Daniels

Ruth Conway Thomas, 71, died April 8 in Hopkinsville. She was born
October 26, 1923, in Christian County. A resident of Hopkinsville, she
was a retired teacher. Her husband, Ernest Archer Thomas, preceded her
in death. Survivors include a son, George Edward Thomas of Apple
Valley, MN; a daughter, Mary Lou Rutford of Danville; five
grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Thomas was the
daughter in law of Mrs. Cora Thomas and sister in law of Miss Carol
Thomas. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, April

TURMAN, Charles
1886-1984
Charles Hilton Turman, 97, died March 26 in Good Samaritan Hospital in
Portland, OR. Born November 26, 1886, he had been a resident of
Portland since 1907. He was a retired salesperson for Fischel’s Awning
& Supply Company and was an honorary Kentucky Colonel. Surviving
are his wife, Lydia L. Turman, five children, 11 grandchildren and 15
great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; and a sister,
Bessie Lockwood of Paintsville. Funeral services were held March 30 at
the family cemetery with entombment in Portland Memorial Mausoleum.

Proctor VanHoose, 70, died Monday, April 30, in Highlands Regional
Medical Center following an extended illness. Born September 13, 1913
in Johnson County, he was the son of John and Lou Lyons VanHoose. He
was a resident of Paintsville, a retired miner and a member of the
Thealka Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Mae
(VanHoose) VanHoose who he married September 28, 1934; 4 sons, James O.
VanHoose of Fuget, John Martin and Phillip Roger VanHoose of Little
Rock, AR, and Larry VanHoose of Paintsville; a daughter, Sandra Jane
Harlow of Prestonsburg; a brother, Arb VanHoose of Florida; a sister,
Corda Castle of Bob White, WV; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 3 in Thealka Freewill Baptist Church
with Bruce Daniels and Don Fraley officiating. Burial was in
Highland Memorial Park under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home.

Earl Muncy and Tom Preece officiated at funeral services for Mrs. Delia
Ward, 92. Mrs. Ward died April 4 in Greenwood manor Nursing Home,
Xenia, OH, following an extended illness. Born Aug 1, 1891, in Martin
County, she was the daughter of Henry and Arminta Runyon Preece. She
was a resident of Beaver Creek, OH. Her husband, Lorenz Ward, Sr.,
preceded her in death in 1969. Surviving are four sons, Paul and Henry
Ward, Boons Camp, Lorenz Ward, Jr., Auxier and Frank Ward, Fairborn,
OH; a daughter, Frances Conley, Beaver Creek; five grandchildren and
two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 7 in Preston
Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Ward Cemetery at Boons Camp.

River resident Virgil Ward, 83, died April 8 in Riverview Manor Nursing
Home, Prestonsburg, after an extended illness. Mr. Ward was born March
20, 1901 in Johnson County, the son of Epperson and Laura Bell Daniel
Ward. He was a retired State Highway employee and a member of the Tom’s
Creek United Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lula VanHoose
Ward, who he married December 14, 1925; two daughters, Dorothy Lee
Sturgill, Pikeville and Alice Jewell Smith, Vine Grove; and one
grandson. Funeral services were held April 11 in Tom’s Creek United
Baptist Church with Bruce Howard, Charles Price and LaFrance Rigsby

Claudetta Williamson Wells, 36, died April 4 at Thelma. Mrs. Wells was
born July 21, 1947, in Johnson County, the daughter of Aldon Ward and
Alka Ward Williamson Hall. She was a resident of Tomahawk. Surviving
are her mother; her husband, Nileford Wells; two sons, Richard Wells,
Tomahawk, and Andrew Wells, Thelma; two daughters, Nile Penix, Tomahawk
and Tracy Dawn Wells, Thelma; a brother Gary Ward, Tomahawk, a step
brother, Randy Hall of Columbus, OH; three sisters, Delilah Runyons and
Pamela Smith, of Paintsville, and Susan Williams and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held April 7 in Pack Bottom Church with Lonnie
Ratliff and Jimmy Maynard officiating. Burial was in the family

Clay Williams, 71, died April 6 in Hall Regional Medical Center. He was
born march 13, 1913 in Johnson County, the son of John and Madge
(Williams) Williams. He was a resident of Paintsville, a retired stone
worker for MJM Stone Company and a member of the United Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death was his first wife, Bertha Lee Robinson
Williams, February 7, 1968. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Montgomery
Williams; a son, Danny Clay Williams, West Van Lear; five daughters,
Lois Wallen, Tutor Key, Margaret Combs, Knox, IN, Gwendolyn Hale,
North Judson, IN, Geraldine Ball and Linda Helton, Flat Fork; two
brothers, Elmer Williams, Harlan, TX and Howard Williams, Cincinnati,
OH; and a sister Louella Brickey, Harriman, TN. Funeral services were
held April 8 in United Baptist Church, Oil Springs, with Elders Lonza
Reed, Frankie Williams, Rutherford Blair, James Williams and Thurman
