AUXIER, Anna (Music)

Funeral services were held Friday, May 3 in Jones-Preston Funeral Home
Chapel for Anna Hope Music Auxier. Mrs. Auxier, 102, died April 30 in
Highlands Regional Medical Center. She was a resident of East Point,
and a daughter of Thomas McCullough Music and Melissa Jane Wilson.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Milton Samuel Auxier, July 4,
1934, and four sons. Surviving are three daughters, Douglas Galbraith
of Blockhouse Bottom, Geneva Crider of East Point and Fanny Hall of
Jacksonville, FL; two granddaughters, Anna Crider and Nancy Houston;
and a great-great granddaughter, Jennifer Keaton. C. C. Hall officiated
at services with burial in Auxier Family Cemetery at Blockhouse Bottom.

BLANTON, Paul
1985
Paul Blanton, 63, of Lucasville, OH died in Scioto Memorial Hospital. A
native of Johnson County, he was a veteran of World War II, a member of
Lucasville Masonic Lodge, a 25 year member of both Woodmen of the World
Pipefitters Local 577 and a deacon at Candy Run United Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Hattie O'Bryan Blanton; three sons, James R. of
Lucasville, Paul M. of Baltimore, OH, and Larry K. of Lucasville; two
daughters, Loretta Sue Bender of Columbus and Linda Hall of Lucasville;
a brother, John F. Blanton of Oil Springs; four sisters, Edna Faye
Wheeler of Wheelersburg, Mildred O'Bryan of Newland Ridge, Evalee
Anderson of Springfield and Imogene Powers of Paintsville; 13
grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Elders Arville Murray, Jr and
Francis Blair officiated at services with interment in Scioto Burial

BUTCHER, Maurice
1928-1985
Maurice "Booteye" Butcher, 55, died April 2 in Augusta University
Hospital, Augusta, GA. Mr. Butcher was born May 2, 1928, in Johnson
County, the son of Angus and Mildred Daniel Butcher. He was a mechanic
for James A. Drew. Surviving are two sons, Larry M. Butcher of Lima, OH
and James R. Butcher of Covington; a daughter, Sharon K. Guthrie of
Pandora, OH; five brothers, Granville, Clifford and Donnie Butcher, all
of Williamsport, Joe Butcher of Titusville, FL and Angus Butcher, Jr.
of Dayton, OH; a sister Bonnie Fraley of Thealka; and four
grandchildren. Funeral services were held April 6 in Jones-Preston
Funeral Home Chapel with C. C. Hall officiating. Burial was in Butcher

CANTRELL, Susan
1962-1985
Susan Renee Cantrell, 22, died Thursday, April 11 at University
Hospital in Cleveland, OH after a long illness of Cystic Fibrosis. She
was born Dec 9, 1962 in Campton. Survivors include her father, Hubert
Cantrell of Lexington; her mother Glenda Phillips Maupin of Lancaster;
grandparents, Raymond and Bessie Phillips of Campton; stepfather, Buddy
Maupin of Lancaster, stepmother, Brenda Faye Cantrell of Lexington; one
brother, Eddie Ray Cantrell of Lexington; two step brothers, Roger and
Michael Maupin of Lancaster. She was the granddaughter of Loman and
Lizzie Cantrell of Fuget. Funeral services were held Sunday in Ramsey
Funeral Home, Lancaster. Burial was in the Bush Family Cemetery,

CONLEY, Mary (Hunnley)
1906-1985
Mary Ellen Conley, 78, died April 17 in Highland Regional Medical
Center. Mrs. Conley was born April 20, 1906 in Magoffin County, the
daughter of William and Susan Rigsby Hunnley. She was a resident of
Paintsville and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Her husband,
Lewis Conley, preceded her in death June 21, 1958. Surviving are three
sons, Herschell Conley of Campton, Roy Conley of Hager Hill and Troy
Conley of Staffordsville, a step son, Matthew Daniels of Stambaugh;
three daughters, Armantha Lemaster of Paintsville, Opal Manbeavers and
Rebecca Cantrell of Waverly, OH; 48 grandchildren and 51 great
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 20 in
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Donald Ray Caudill and
Paul Daniels officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at Barnetts

Lee Epperson Davis, Sr., 53, died Sunday, April 7, in VA Hospital in
Huntington, WV. Mr. Davis was born October 1, 1931 in Chatteroy, WV,
the son of Neva Mills Davis and the late John Herman Davis. He was a
resident of Thelma. Surviving are his mother; his wife, Doris Donley
Davis who he married Jan. 7, 1953; 2 sons, Lee Epperson Davis, Jr. of
Van Lear and Tony Davis at home; 3 daughters, Sharon Leigh Burchett of
Staffordsville, Teresa Ann Kinner of Thealka and Robin Michelle Davis
at home; 5 brothers, Earl Davis of Versailles, John Davis of Davis
Branch, Leonard Davis of Meally, Russell Davis of Oceana, WV and Kenny
Davis of Columbus, OH; a sister, Hazel Ford of Columbus; 3
grandchildren, Dewayne Kinner, Jeremy Burchett and Melissa Ann
Burchett. Funeral services were held April 9 in Preston Funeral Home
Chapel with Bill Meadows, Bob Castle and Bo Burton officiating. Burial
was in Horn Cemetery at Jenny’s Creek. Pallbearers were Greg Donley,
Mike Donley, Gary Donley, Jerry Meade, Carl Lewis, Dave Fraley, Shannon

DOSS, Frankie (Patrick)
1912-1985
Paintsville Herald, April 17, 1985 Mrs. Frankie Patrick Doss, 74, died
April 9, in Richmond, VA. Mrs. Doss was born Jan 11, 1912, in Johnson
County, the daughter of Noah and Nancy Music Patrick. She was a member
of the Church of Christ. Her husband, Kyle Doss, preceded her in death
in 1976. Surviving are three sons, Robert and Luther Ward of Kansas
City, MO and James Ward of Huttonsville, WV; four daughters, Eleanor
Bolden of Welch, WV, Francis Main and Carolyn Borashk of Richmond, VA
and Loretta Hanks of Baltimore, MD. Also a brother, Willis Patrick of
Paintsville; two sisters, Evelyn Hamilton and Rosa Preston of Meally;
27 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held April 12 in Jones- Preston Funeral Home
Chapel with J. M. Scott officiating. Burial was in Patrick Family

FANNIN, Donna (Rice)
1935-1985
Donna C. Fannin, 90, of Jackson, OH died April 11 in Gainesville, FL.
Born in Johnson County, she had been a member of the Barnetts Creek
United Baptist Church since February 1935. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Charles Vencil, on May 3, 1975, and a son, Bryant, on
September 10,.1977. Survivors include five sons, Granville of Resaca,
GA, Charles of Lakewood, CA, Gerald of Jackson, OH, Frank of Hillsboro,
OH, and John of Petoskey, MI; three daughters, Mary Ealey of
Smithfield, VA, Phyllis Wells of Hawthorne, FL, and Donna “Nancy”
Martin of Ann Arbor, MI; 27 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Erwin Dodson Funeral
Home, Minford, OH. Burial was in Mountain Ridge Cemetery, Jackson

Ryan Harmon, one month old son of Dwane and Ersel Patzwaldt Harmon of
Germany, died April 26. Graveside services were held May 4 in Highland

Meally resident Effie Huff, 81, died April 11 in Paul B. Hall Regional
Medical Center. Mrs. Huff was born February 28, 1904 the daughter of
Kanawha and Cora Preston Jennings. She was a member of the
Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are Her husband, Johnny Huff;
two sons, William Webb of Mechanicsburg, OH and Freddie Cantrell of
Wellston, OH; a daughter Pauline Powell of Springfield, OH; a brother,
Lafe Jennings of Wellston, OH; two sisters, Ethel Wells of Meally and
Virginia Cumbo of Albany, OH; 21 grandchildren and several great-great
grandchildren. Services held in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with
Bruce Daniels officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery in

PRESTON James Willard

James Willard Preston, 64, of Augusta, IL, died April 12 in Burlington
Medical Center, Burlington, IA. Mr. Preston was born in Johnson County,
the son of the late Rev. Fred and Rosa Stanley Preston. He was a
retired industrial engineer of Colt Industries Quincy Compressor, a
World War II veteran and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Surviving
are his wife, Jean Frye, two sons, David James of Kirkwood, MO, and
Phillip Edward of St. Louis; two daughters, Mrs. Sherry Pieper of
Rockford, and Cynthia Fleig, of Washington, D. C., four grandchildren,
six sisters, Nellie Elam of Lexington, Maude Jackson of Dallas, Laura
Schultz of Washington, PA, Estelle Porter of Cummons, GA, Alice Roberts
and Mary Grace Roman of Paintsville. Funeral services were conducted at
Hamilton Funeral Home, Augusta, IL, with Rev. Joseph Wright

ROWE, Ambrett

Ambrett Lerin Rowe, 2, died April 18 in an automobile accident at Van
Lear. She was born August 13, 1982, in Johnson County, the daughter of
Darlene Hannah Rowe and the late Phillip Michael Rowe. Surviving in
addition to her mother are a brother, Landon Michael, at home, her
grandparents, Hargis and Violet Jones Rowe, of Hager Hill and James and
Pearl Hannah of Inez. Funeral services were held April 21 in Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Nippa with Elders Marty Spurlock
and John Kofoed officiating. Burial was in Johnson County Memorial

Phillip Michael Rowe, 30, died April 18 as the result of an automobile
accident. Mr. Rowe was born April 5, 1955 in Johnson County, the son of
Hargis and Violet Jones Rowe of Hager Hill. He was a resident of Van
Lear, an employee of Big Sandy Hardware and a member of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Surviving are his wife, Darlene
Hannah Rowe; a son, Landon Michael Rowe; at home, and a sister, Mrs.
Rhonda Music of Hager Hill. Funeral services were held April 21 in the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Nippa with Elders Marty
Spurlock and John Kofoed officiating. Burial was in Johnson County

Estill Sadler, 63, died April 27 at Barnetts Creek. Mr. Sadler was born
May 2, 1921 in Johnson County, the son of Millard and Telia Castle
Sadler. He was a retired miner and a resident of Nippa. Surviving are
his wife, Betty Stambaugh Sadler; three daughters, Donna Louise Waddell
Burchett and Pamela Jean Sadler, both of Nippa and Judith Dameron of
Pikeville; two brothers, Elmer and Eskell Sadler of Mechanicsburg, two
sisters, Raethel Collins of Nippa and Alma Jean Hannah of Urbana, OH; 5
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, April 29 in Toms
Creek Freewill Baptist Church with James Kelly Caudill and Grover
Castle officiating. Burial was in VanHoose Cemetery at Nippa with

TRAVIS, Delphia (Johnson)
1908-1985
Thelma resident Delphia Travis, 77, died April 15 in Highlands Regional
Medical Center. Mrs. Travis was born March 2, 1908, the daughter of
J.R. Johnson and Rebecca Castle Johnson. She was a retired employee of
Paintsville Hospital and a member of Concord United Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Linzie Travis, who she married November 17,
1923; three sons, Roby J. Travis of Troy, OH, Linzie Travis, Jr of
Thelma and Bobby Joe Travis of Prestonsburg; two daughters, Hazel Lee
Charles of Columbus, OH and Anna M. Horne of Springfield, OH; a half
sister, Anna Lee Gambill of Thelma; 12 grandchildren and several great
grandchildren. Funeral services held April 17 in Concord United Baptist
Church with Elders B.C. Ferguson and Charles Price officiating. Burial
was in Dan Gambill Cemetery at Thelma with Preston Funeral Home in

VANHOOSE, Iva (Jackson)
1897-1985
Funeral services were held April 7 for Elisha Jackson, 87. Mr. Jackson
died April 4, at the home of his daughter in Urbana, OH, after an
extended illness. He was born January 15, 1897 in Johnson County, the
son of Isaiah and Sarah Elizabeth Saylor Jackson. He was a retired
miner and a former deputy jailor. His wife, Mollie Blair Jackson,
preceded him in death April 25, 1972. Surviving are three sons, Robert
Jackson, Paintsville, Lawrence Jackson, Austin, TX, and Haskell
Jackson, Warsaw, IN; a daughter, Mrs. Joy VanHoose, Urbana; three
brothers, Riley Jackson, Ashland, and Eddie and Edward Jackson, Warsaw;
a sister, Mrs. Hulda Gibson, Carey, OH; 14 grandchildren and 19 great
grandchildren. Revs Scott Castle and Larry Blair officiated at services
in Third Street Freewill Baptist Church. Burial was in Mayo Memorial
Cemetery under the direction of Paintsville Funeral Home. Paintsville

WALLIN, Bessie (Fyffe)
1894-1985
Keaton resident, Mrs. Bessie Wallin, 90, died April 2 at her home
following an extended illness. Mrs. Wallin was born October 27, 1894 in
Johnson County, the daughter of Jim and Susan Ferguson Fyffe. She was a
resident of Keaton and a member of the Enterprise Baptist Church. Her
husband, Rev. C. H. Wallin preceded her in death May 31, 1982.
Surviving are 4 sons, Edgar Wallin of Louisa, Glen Wallin of Martha,
Fred Wallin of Catlettsburg and Howard Wallin of Aberdene, MD; 5
daughters, Maxie Sparks of Hilliard, OH, America Lester of Plain City,
OH, Marie Skaggs of Flat Gap, Ilene Hampton of Staffordsville and
Avonell Skaggs of Martha. Also, 3 sisters, Lida Wright of Keaton, Lexie
Ferguson of Moon, and Beulah Hill of Relief; 18 grandchildren; 30 great
grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Friday, April 5 in Christian Union Enterprise Baptist Church at Keaton
with Revs. Ellis Hamilton and Tobe Wheeler, Jr., officiating.
Burial was in Skaggstown Church Cemetery at Flat Gap with Paintsville

WEBB, Tessie (Burke)
1899-1985
West Van Lear resident Tessie Burke Wells Webb, 86, died April 29 in
Paul B. Hall Medical Center. Mrs. Webb was born March 9, 1899 in
Johnson County, a daughter of Drant Burke and Addie Clifton. She was a
member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by two
husband, Colvin Wells, 1937, and Jake Webb, 1980. Surviving are a son,
Denzil Wells, Leesville, SC; three daughters, Racine Howard and
Grandaline McFaddin of Paintsville, and Doris McFaddin of Springfield,
OH; four brothers, Robert and Walter Burke of Van Lear and Richard and
Estill Burke of Wabash, IN; a sister, Lena Birchfield, of Aflex, KY;
ten grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services were
held May 3 in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Curtis Tussey and
Bill Cantrell officiating. Burial was in Wells-Collins Cemetery at Van
