Sitka resident, Marvin Adams, 79, died Thursday, April 3, in Paul B.
Hall Medical Center. Mr. Adams was born May 19, 1906, in Magoffin
County, the son of Alex and Addie Dixon Adams. Surviving are his wife,
Elizabeth Holbrook Adams; four sons, Marvin Ray Adams and Milton Adams,
both of Salyersville, Rex Adams, of San Antonio, TX, and Jerry Adams,
of Lincoln, NB; three daughters, Norma Jean Arnett and Mary Rose
Puckett, both of Salyersville, and Peggy Boggs, of Frankfort; and three
sisters, Marie Risner of Owensboro, Nell Howard of CA, and Helen
Caudill of Ashland. Funeral services were held April 6 in Jones-Preston
Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Castle, Eugene Stambaugh and Eddie

BALDRIDGE, Kermit, Sr.
1917-1986
Kermit Franklin Baldridge, Sr., 68, died April 11 in Highlands Regional
Medical Center. Mr. Baldridge was born May 22, 1917, at Little Paint,
the son of Henry Jackson and Sarah Ann Webb Baldridge. He was a
resident of Prestonsburg and served as manager of Williams Grocery for
42 years. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Williams Baldridge; two
sons, Donald Dewey Baldridge of Prestonsburg and Kermit F. Baldridge,
Jr., of Paintsville; two sisters, Patricia C. Allen and Judith Ann
Rowe, both of Prestonsburg; five grandchildren and three great
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 13 in Carter
Funeral Home in Prestonsburg with Drs. Harold Dorsey and Quentin
Scholtz officiating. Burial was in Richmond Cemetery in Prestonsburg.

BAYES, John D. Bayes
1986
John D. Bayes, 77, of Lucasville, died Monday, April 7 at Scioto
Memorial Hospital in Portsmouth. A native of Johnson County and a
Scioto County resident for 60 years, he was a retired head checker in
the shipping department of Empire-Detroit Steel Corp., and a member of
United Steelworkers Local 2116, Western Sun Masonic Lodge and Pine
Creek United Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee, clerk and
senior deacon. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Lilvia
Ross Bayes, in 1978. Surviving are his wife, Doris E. Bayes; a son,
George Douglas Bayes of Holmes Beach, FL; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth
(Geneva) Rucker of Eden Park, Mrs. Jack (Darlene) Melvin of Minford,
OH, and Mrs. Dean (Velma) Bradbury of Reynoldsburg; two brothers, Carl
Bayes of Minford and Frank Bayes of Washington Court House; also a
sister, Gusta Boggs of Portsmouth; two half brothers, Eli Barker of
Sarasota, FL and Ben Barker of Sunbury, OH; 16 grandchildren; 20 great
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 10, at Pine
Creek United Baptist Church with Elders Basil Blair and Doug Grimm

BOWEN, Jack

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 24, in Paintsville Funeral
Home Chapel for Jack Bowen, 75. Mr. Bowen died April 22 in Phelps
Community Medical center after an extended illness. He was born March
10, 1911 in Johnson County, the son of Morgan and Elizabeth Crum Bowen.
He was a resident of Paintsville and a retired shoe cobbler. His wife,
Wanda Couch Bowen preceded him in death November 29, 1985. Surviving
are three brothers, Johnny Bowen of OH, Daniel Bowen of Paintsville,
and Junior Bowen of Sitka; and five sisters, Katherine Wells of Van
Lear, Louvisa Reed of Hippo, Gladys Price of Paintsville, Opal Bowen of
Sitka and Irene Bowen of WV. Rev. Bruce Daniels officiated at services,

BUTCHER, Beecher, Jr.
1918-1986
Services for Beecher "Butch" Butcher, Jr., 68, of El Dorado, KS, were
held April 22 in The Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial followed
in the Sunset Lawns Cemetery. Mr. Butcher died Sunday April 20, at
Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born Feb
3, 1918 in Williamsport, son of Beecher and Ollie Williams Butcher,
Sr.. He moved to El Dorado i n1946 after his marriage to Sarah
Zimmerman of Feb2, 1946. He was a shift supervisor for the Skelly-Getty
Refinery, retiring in 1978. He served in the Pacific Theatre in the U.
S. Army during World War II, was a member of the Victory Class of the
Christian Church and the Getty Retirees Club. He is survived by his
wife, Sally; a daughter, Marylee Parry of El Dorado; 2 grandchildren,
Patrick and Megan Parry of El Dorado; 7 brothers, Danny of Barett, WV,
Paul of Prestonsburg, Douglas and Ivan both of Meally, Donis of
Dearbourne, MI, James of Franklin, OH and Henry of Miamisburg, OH; 4
sisters, Georgene Barnett of Stanton, Anita Walters of Miamisburg, OH,

Goldie Jean Butcher, 81, died Thursday, April 24, in Paul B. Hall
Medical Center. Mrs. Butcher was born Mar 11, 1905 in Johnson County,
the daughter of Jessie and Mary Crum Meek. She was a resident of Boons
Camp and a member of the Little Friendship United Baptist Church.
Surviving is her husband, Jeff Butcher, who she married Sep 11, 1926 in
Prestonsburg. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 26 in Preston
Funeral Home Chapel, with Roger Necessary officiating. Burial was in

Chapel for Jeff Butcher, 78, He died Tuesday, April 29, in Paul B. Hall
Medical Center. Mr. Butcher was born Jan 21, 1908 in Johnson County,
the son of Harmon and June Kistner Butcher. He was a resident of Boons
Camp and a retired miner. His wife, Goldie Meek Butcher, preceded him
in death April 24, 1986. Surviving are a brother, Harmon Butcher, Jr;

Hall Medical Center. Mr. Coburn was born March 10, 1913 in Pike County.

and Dean Turner, all of Van Lear; one stepdaughter, Cathy Holbrook; and

Virginia (Litz) Daniels, 74, died April 29 in Highlands Regional
Medical Center. Mrs. Daniels was born January 8, 1912 in Floyd County,
the daughter of Will and Nanny Rothwell Litz. She was a resident of
Auxier and a member of the Methodist Church. Her husband, Lincoln
Daniels, preceded her in death November 15, 1980. Surviving are a son,
James Howard Daniels of Auxier; a daughter Betty Curnette of Auxier;
two sisters, Olive Walters of Ashland and Mary Madden of Miami, FL;
three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were

Grover Cleveland Deskins, 73, of Nippa died April 15 in Highlands
Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Deskins was
born January 9 1913 at Betsy Layne, the son of Brit and Angeline Cecil
Deskins. He was a retired employee of American Standard. Surviving are
his wife, Gleanna Webb Deskins; three daughters, Lena Ramey and Carolyn
Sue Ramey, both of Sitka, and Angela Deskins of Nippa; a step daughter,
Eva Lee Stacy of Prestonsburg; a brother, Henry Deskins of Lexington;
two grandchildren and one step grandchild.. Funeral services were held
April 17 in Carter Funeral Home in Prestonsburg, with Rev. Wayne Hall
officiating. Burial was in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.

Shelby Fyffe Eisenrod was born April 2, 1918 in Lawrence Co., the
daughter of Jim Frank and Judy Skaggs Fyffe. Mrs. Eisenrod died Friday,
April 25, in U. C. L. A. Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA. Her father,
Jim Frank and a brother Chester Fyffe, preceded her in death. Surviving
are her mother, Judy Fyffe of Canton, OH; her husband, H. E. (Ed)
Eisenrod of Beverly Hill, CA; a son, Harold D. Graves of Cleveland, OH;
two sisters, Alda Diamond of Canton and Wilma Fink of Aneheim, CA; a
brother, Tully Fyffe of Springfield, OH; two grandchildren and one
great grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday, April 28, at the

Van Lear resident Opal Fields, 78, died Monday, April 7 in Highlands
Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Fields was born October 31, 1913 in
Johnson County, the daughter of Jim and Martha Collins. She was a
member of the Church of Christ. Her husband, Eugene Fields, preceded
her in death. Surviving are two sons, Hershell Fields and Ronald
Fields, both of Van Lear, three daughters, Emma Lou Daniels, Cleta Mae
Dehart, and Lois Sue Chane, all of Wabash, IN; three brothers, Connard
Collins, of Van Lear, Edward Collins, of Hager Hill, and Elmo Ratliff
of Paintsville; two sisters, Frances Sellers of Meally, and Bertha

nurse of Paintsville Hospital, and a member of the Freewill Baptist
church. Surviving are her husband, Foster "Lang" Fraley; five brothers,

Clifford and Granville "Bo" Butcher both of Williamsport, and Donald

Huntington, WV as the result of an automobile accident. Mr. Hammond was

Hughes Hammond. He was a resident of Paintsville, a retired employee of
Western Coal and a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are
his wife, Loretta Anderson Hammond; a son, Charles Foster Hammond of
Paintsville; a daughter Janann Maynard of Prichard, WV; two sisters,
Dorothy Daniels of Van Lear and Beatrice Blair of Paintsville; four

Retired school teacher Miss Effie Lemaster, 89, died Wednesday, April
30, in J. J. Jordan Nursing Home following an extended illness.
She was born in Johnson County, the daughter of William D. and Minerva
Slone Lemaster, and was a member of the Old Hood United Baptist Church.
Surviving are seven nephews and five nieces. Funeral services were held
Sunday, May 4, in Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Lonza Reed
officiating. Burial was in the Lemaster Cemetery at Flat Gap.

Flat Gap resident Virgil Lemaster, 85, died Wednesday, April 30, at his
residence. Mr. Lemaster was born Dec 11, 1900 in Johnson County, the
son of Henry Bascom and Florence Harris Lemaster. He was a retired
employee of Ashland Oil and a member of the Old Hood United Baptist
Church. He was preceded in death by two wives, Rebecca, 1977, and
Mildred, 1985. Surviving are five sons, Waldyne Lemaster of Barnetts
Creek, Bobby Lemaster, of Chicago, IL, Marvin Lemaster of Sacramento,

Belva McKenzie, 91, died April 14 in J. J. Jordan Nursing Home in
Louisa. She was born December 17, 1894 in Lawrence County, the daughter
of Hargis and Samantha Phillips Boggs, and was a resident of Flat Gap.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Paintsville. Preceding
her in death were her husband, Ora B. McKenzie, December 21, 1943, and
three children, Jewell, Marshall and Ora, Jr., Surviving are four sons,
Walter (Buck) McKenzie of Flat Gap, Reuben McKenzie of Flemingsburg,
James McKenzie of Catlettsburg, and Thomas McKenzie of St. Johns, IN;
four daughters, Margie Burchett of Stambaugh, Berniece Ferguson of
Keaton, Audrey Jones of Mt. Sterling and Betty Banfield of Ashland.
Also, a sister, Nola Hare of Portsmouth; 28 grandchildren, 34 great
grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services were

preceded her in death August 24, 1984. Surviving are a nephew, Roger
Owens of Greenup; and one sister in law, Mary Jenkins of Fuget.

Cora Stepleton Price, 88, of Hobe Sound, FL died Thursday, April 24, in
Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, FL. She was a native of Paintsville
and had made her home for the past 5 years in Stuart and Hobe Sound, FL
with her daughters. She was born June 7, 1897 and was a member of a
pioneer Kentucky family whose grandmother came from North Carolina
through Cumberland Gap into Kentucky by covered wagon. Survivors
include her husband, Joseph Price of Paintsville; three daughters,
Cynthia E. Pitcock of Palm City, FL, Mary E. Hopkins of Hobe Sound, FL
and Pauline Ronjak of Chicago; two granddaughters, Candice Ronjak of
Chicago and Cora Rice of Orlando, FL; six grandsons, Gordon Hopkins,
Mark Hopkins, Gary Ronjak, Phillip King, Lynn King and Victor King, and
8 great grandchildren. Services were held Saturday, April 26, at

husband, Simmie Salyers, preceded her in death mar 1978., Surviving are

Cantrell and Mary Blanton, all of Volga; opal King of Flat Gap,

Prestonsburg following an extended illness. Mr. Stapleton was born
September 20, 1910 in Johnson County, the son of Marion and Mint Cooper
Stapleton. He was a resident of Hager Hill and a retired coal miner.
Surviving are his wife, Norsie Williams Stapleton; a son, Michael Ray
Stapleton of Hager Hill; three daughters, Linda Auxier, Virginia
Meadows and Tobiana McCarty of Hager Hill; two brothers, Bill Stapleton

in Louisville. Mrs. Turner was born July 11, 1908 in Floyd County, the
daughter of Walter M. and Geoyanna Riffe Byington. She was a retired
employee of First National Bank, a member of Mayo Methodist Church and
DAR, and served as a director of First National. Her husband, J.
Douglas Turner, preceded her in death June 23, 1959. Surviving are a
son, James Douglas Turner of Louisville; a daughter Diane Belko of
Winnetka, IL; a brother, Walter Byington of Lansing, MI; two sisters,

Monroe Wallen, 62, died Tuesday, April 29, in Paul B. Hall Medical
Center. He was born April 22, 1924 in Floyd County, the son of Mart and
Lydia Ramey Wallen, and was a miner. Surviving are his wife, Irene
Compton Wallen, who he married in 1950; a step son, James B. Morrison
of Michigan; a daughter, Diane Castle of Lowmansville; a sister, Gladys
Cornett of Warsaw, IN; two half sisters, Phyllis Delong of Florida and
Shirley Fitzgerald of Warsaw; two step grandchildren and one
granddaughter. Funeral services were held Thursday, May 1, in Baker
Branch Freewill Baptist Church with Venny VanHoose officiating. Burial
was in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville. Paintsville

WEBB, Ruie (Castle)
1907-1986
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 15, in Jones-Preston Funeral
Home Chapel, for Ruie Webb, 78. Mrs. Webb died Saturday, April 12, in
Highlands Regional Medical Center. She was born Jun 13, 1907 in Johnson
County, the daughter of Milty and Resse Robinson Castle. She was a
retired clerk and factory worker and was a member of the Van Lear
Freewill Baptist Church. Her husband, Curtiss Webb, preceded her in
death Aug 16, 1980. Surviving are five sons, Clifford Walker of
Burnette, TX, Curtiss Webb, Jr., Clyde Webb, Homer Webb, all of Wabash,
IN and Hobert Preston of Paintsville; six daughters, Marlene Coleman
and Priscilla Pack, both of Van Lear, Billie Music, of Roann, IN, Faye
Hughes of Neon, May Rudd, of Whitesburg, and Elizabeth Music of Wabash;
one sister, Katheryn Meadows of Croffordsville, IN; 39 grandchildren
and several great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday,
April 15, in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Harry Neil Frisby
officiating. Burial was in Highland memorial Park at Staffordsville.

WELCH, Mart
1911-1986
Mart Welch, 74, died Friday, April 4, in Paul B. Hall Medical Center
following an extended illness. Mr. Welch was born June 22, 1911 in
Johnson County, the son of Lige and Margaret Rowland Welch. He was a
resident of Whitehouse, a retired miner and a member of the Whitehouse
Enterprise Baptist church. Surviving are his wife, Esther Butcher Webb,
who he married Dec 13, 1931; two sons, Mart Ray Welch and Marlin Jay
Welch, both of Whitehouse; two daughters, Margaret Jean Spears of
Whitehouse and Melda Corine Wiley, of Meally; a brother, Ralph Welch of
Whitehouse; two sisters, Mary Lemaster of Wheelersburg, OH and May
Darby of Columbus, OH; and three grandchildren, Earletta Meade of Van
Lear, Vonda Gayle Meek of Flatwoods, and Craig Booth of Paintsville.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 6, in Whitehouse Enterprise
Baptist church with Charlie Wiley and Tommy Meade officiating. Burial
was in Son Butcher Cemetery at Whitehouse with Preston Funeral Home in
charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Paul R. Childers, Michael J.
Childers, Danny Childers, Marty Welch, Darrin Spears and David J.

WELLS, Cora (Goble)
1896-1986
Cora Bell Wells, 89, died Saturday, April 12, in Riverview Manor
Nursing Home in Prestonsburg. Mrs. Wells was born Sep 25, 1896 in Floyd
County, the daughter of James and Florence Wells Goble. She was a
member of the Methodist Church. Her husband, George W. Wells preceded
her in death. Surviving are 7 sons, Kenny Wells and Richard Wells, both
of Auxier, Herb Wells of MO, Bob Wells of Prestonsburg, Paul Wells of
Miss. and Edward Wells of FL; two daughters, Lorraine Tounjian of
CA and Glennora Montgomery of Auxier, two brothers, Ted Goble and Paris
Goble of Auxier; two sisters, Opal McKenzie and Dottie Perry, both of
Auxier; 41 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren. Funeral services were
held Tuesday, April 15 in Auxier Methodist Church with Jerry Lafferty
officiating. Burial was in Government Relocation Cemetery at Auxier
with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
