Manila resident, George G. Auxier, Jr., 70, died Tuesday, April 14 in
Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. Mr. Auxier was born December 10,
1917 in Johnson County, the son of G. G. and Lula Salyer Auxier. He was
a retired sales clerk from Salyers Store in Paintsville and a member of
Pigeon Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Nadine
Lemaster Auxier; two brothers, Carson Auxier of Salyersville, and
Chester Auxier of Red Bush; five sisters, Alka Stapleton, of
Paintsville, Iva Joy Meade, Pauline Meek and Irene Brittoo, all of
Louisa and Ruth Hayes of Dayton, OH. Funeral services were held Friday,
April 17, in Pigeon Enterprise Baptist Church at Oil Springs with Revs.
Charles Stapleton and James Kelly Caudill officiating. Burial was in

Bessie Nichols Branham, 65, died Thursday, April 9, in Paul B. Hall
Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Branham was born September 13, 1921 in
Martin County, the daughter of Fred and Harriet Shell Nichols.
Surviving are her husband, Luther Elmer Branham; one daughter Kathy
Phillips of Tomahawk; one brother, Woodrow Nichols of Columbus; and two
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 12, in
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Woodrow Sexton and Johnny

Onedia Castle, 71, died Monday, April 20, in Paul B. Hall Regional
Medical Center. Mrs. Castle was born May 24, 1915 in Johnson County,
the daughter of Alfred and Ida Crider. She was a member of Thealka
Freewill Baptist Church. Her husband, Woodrow Crider preceded her in
death in 1984. Surviving are three sons, Roger Castle and Doug Castle,
both of Thealka, and Lon C. Castle of Van Lear; four daughters, Jessie
Young, of Thealka, Rose Daniels and Magadlene Ward, both of Columbus,
and Elizabeth Pack of Baltimore, MD; one brother, James Crider, of
Staffordsville; two sisters, Anna McKenzie of Staffordsville, and Julia
Adkins of Thealka; and 26 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 23 in Jones-Preston Funeral
Home Chapel with Don Fraley officiating. Burial was in the family

Doris H. Chandler, 62, of Westchester, OH, died Thursday April 16 in
the Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati. She was born July 26, 1924 in
Johnson County, the daughter of Millard and Laura Salyer Huff. She was
a retired nurse’s aide. Surviving are one daughter, Bonnie Chandler of
Westchester, OH; one son and daughter in law, Jack and Debbie Chandler
of Middletown, OH; one sister, Joene Slone of Paintsville; one brother,
Robert Huff of Sitka and three granddaughters. Funeral services were

Thelma resident, Beatrice Leatha Kilgore Deboard, 72, died Tuesday,
April 14 at her home. Mrs. Deboard was born December 22, 1914 in
Tennessee, the daughter of Lillie Mae and Oliver Williams Kilgore.
Surviving are her husband, Willard Deboard; four sons, Kenneth Deboard
of Thelma, John Deboard, Glen Deboard, and Wayne Deboard all of Wabash,
IN; three daughters, Mildred Schonborn of Glouster, OH, Charlotte
Ratliff of Mousie and Brenda Fitzpatrick of Lexington; three brothers,
Dallas Kilgore of Hueysville, Harley Kilgore of Hippa, and Glen Kilgore
of Rockford, IL; two sisters, Lillian Cunningham, of Farmington, MI,
and Leona Clark of Fairborn, OH; and 18 grandchildren and six great
grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 6 at 11

Hershell Ray Fields, 46, died Sunday, April 19 at his residence. Mr.
Fields was born November 15, 1940 in Johnson County, the son of Gene
Fields and Opal Collins Fields. He was a retired miner. Surviving are
his father, his wife, Shirley Walters Fields; four sons, Terry Fields,
of Salyersville, Hershell Ray Fields, Jr., of Manchester, IN, John
Fields of Van Lear and Gary Fields of Paintsville; one daughter, Debra
Fields of Paintsville; three step children, Shirley Fields of
Manchester, IN, Dane Fields of Salyersville and Bill Fields of
Manchester, IN; one brother, Ronald Dean Fields of Van Lear; and three
sisters, Emma Lou Daniels, Cleta Mae DeHart and Lois Sue Chane, all of
Wabash, IN. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 22 in

Benjamin Harrison “Bennie” Grim, 84, died Tuesday, April 21 at his
residence at 2301 Orange Ave., Ft. Pierce, FL, following an extended
illness. Mr. Grim was born June 27, 1902 at Nippa, a son of Louis and
George Ann Williams Grim and was a member of the Blaine United Baptist
Church. Surviving are three brothers, Walter Grim, of River, Edgar
Grim, of Florida, and Thurman Grim, of Paintsville; and two sisters,
Bessie Picklesimer of Ft. Pierce and Zelphia Grim of Florida. Funeral
services were held Saturday, April 25 in Preston Funeral Home Chapel
with Ervin Preston officiating. Burial was in Grim Cemetery at Nippa.

Mr. Grim was born September 23, 1913 in Johnson County, the son of
Leander Cox and Lou Anna Jane Caudill Grim. He was a member of the
United Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Cora Williams Grim; four
sons, William Kenneth Grim of Catlettsburg, Marion Francis Grim of

Edith Elva Hamilton, 72, died Wednesday, April 1 in Waynesville, OH.
Mrs. Hamilton was born August 12, 1914 in Johnson County, the daughter
of Ben and Laura McKenzie Salyer. She was a member of Freewill Baptist
Church at Hager Hill. Her husband, Willis Hamilton preceded her in
death in 1969. surviving are four sons, Bill Hamilton of Paintsville,
Willis D. Hamilton of Lebanon, OH, Tommy Hamilton of Corbin, and Kelly
Hamilton of Tulsa, OK, three daughters, Judy Johnson of Paintsville,

brothers, Roy Salyer of Paintsville and Mitchell Salyer of Lexington;
one sister, Louise Bevins of Paintsville and 16 grandchildren and four

Roy E. Hamilton, 75, died Monday, April 13, in Riverview Manor Nursing
Home, Prestonsburg. Mr. Hamilton was born August 16, 1911 in Morgan
County, the son of Jackie and Vera Hill Hamilton. He was a retired pipe
fitter. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Hamilton of Staffordsville, and

Bertha Chandler Hayes, 87, died Saturday, April 11, in King’s
Daughters’ Hospital, Ashland. Mrs. Hayes was born March 17, 1900 at
Lowmansville, the daughter of David and Martha Lowe Chandler. Her
husband, Green B. Hayes, preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons,
James A. and Donald E. Hayes, both of Ashland; three daughters, Mrs.
Ford Blevins, of Staffordsville, Mrs. Arthur Benjamin of Westwood, and
Mrs. Olive H. Johnson of Hollyhill, FL; three brothers, Enis Chandler

Lowmansville; one sister, Dorothy Brown of Jackson, OH; and 10
grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and three great-great

Vencil Hitchcox, 71, died Sunday, April 26 in Appalachian Regional
Hospital in Hazard. Mr. Hitchcox was a resident of Westview Manor in
Paintsville. He was born February 3, 1916 at Low, KY, the son of George
and Lottie Picklesimer Hitchcox. Surviving are a sister, Glory Ann
Nail, of Columbus, OH, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

KRETZER, William "Bill" Jr.

William E. “Bill” Kretzer, Jr., 18, of Iron Works Road, Clark County
died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 in an automobile accident on the
Boonesboro Road. A graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, he was
a student at Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, and a shift manager
for Mr. Gatti’s. He was a native of Johnson County, and was the son of
William E. “Bill” Kretzer, Sr., and Shirley Ratliff Kretzer of Clark
County. In addition to his parents, survivors include a sister, Sherry
Kretzer, Clark County; a brother, Clifton Kretzer, Clark County,
grandparents, B. B. Kretzer and Louise King Kretzer and the late Mr.
and Mrs. Earl Ratliff; a great grandmother, Mrs. Bertha Kretzer,
Johnson County, and several uncles, aunts and cousins. Services were
conducted at 1 p.m. Friday April 17 at the Scobee Funeral Home by the
Rev. Steve Rose and Rev. Edwin Davis. Burial was in the Winchester

McClure died Thursday, April 9 in his home at Oil Springs. Mr. McClure

Lemaster McClure. He was retired from Ashland Oil Company and a member
of Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Ann Lemaster

member of the United Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Harry

Huntington, WV following an extended illness. Mr. Meek was born
November 19, 1923 in Johnson County, a son of Willis and Millie Delong
Meek, and was a heavy equipment operator. Surviving, in addition to his
parents, are his wife, Louise Roberts Meek, who he married August 23,
1944, in Paintsville; a son, David Meek of Whitehouse; three daughters,
Linda Blair of Leander, Kay Welch of Whitehouse, and Gail Grim of
Wittensville; seven brothers, Donis, Homer, Harry, and Paul Meek, all
of Boons Camp, Arnold Meek of Floyd County, Jack Meek, of Thelma, and

Engineers at Dewey Dam, was a World War II Army veteran and a member of

and Melvin (Bud) Morrison of Auxier; six daughters, Genivene Perry,

employee of the Johnson County Board of Education. Surviving are her
mother, her husband, Arnold Murphy, three daughters, Vicky VanHoose,

of Van Lear; one granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Murphy, of Van Lear, four

of Mansfield, OH, Lonnie Tackett of Willard, OH, and Denvil Tackett of
Barnetts Creek; and six daughter, Cynthia Miller of East Point, Mary
Clark and Martha Laney of Paintsville, Roxie Waller, of Lexington, Ann
Rose of Prestonsburg, and Lilly Mae Meade of Salyersville. Funeral
services were held in Whitaker Freewill Baptist Church with Lowell
Pelphrey and Clifford Spencer officiating. Burial was in Tackett Family
Cemetery at East Point with Preston Funeral Home in charge of

WELLS, William
1910-1987
Wittensville resident, William Lee (Bill) Wells, 77, died Thursday,
April 23 at his home. Mr. Wells was born April 2, 1910 in Johnson
County, the son of Samuel and Cynthia Spriggs Wells. He was retired
from mining and a member of Toms Creek Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Margery Preston Wells; one son, Vernon Wells of
Nippa; three daughters, Bonnie Jean Connelley and Patricia Ann Castle,
both of Wittensville, and June Wells of Orange, CA; one sister, Goldie
Horn of Stone; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Sunday, April 26 in Toms Creek Freewill Baptist
Church with James Kelly Caudill and Ellis Hamilton officiating. Burial
was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville with Jones-Preston

WHEELER, Roy
1911-1987
Roy Wheeler, 76, died Sunday, April 5, in Welch Emergency Hospital,
Welch, WV. Mr. Wheeler was born March 14, 1911 in Johnson County, the
son of Franklin and Elizabeth Fairchild Wheeler. He was a retired
salesman. Surviving are his wife, Alice Damron Wheeler; one son,
Ronald, R. Wheeler, of Detroit, MI and one daughter, Betty Sue Foley of
Charleston, WV; two brothers, Dr. Arville Wheeler of Nashville, TN, and
John M. Wheeler of Paintsville; one sister, Mrs. Greenville Helton, of
Staffordsville, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held
today, Wednesday, April 8 in Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.
Tobe Wheeler, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial
