Funeral services were held Sunday, April 30, for Alice Banks, 85. Mrs.
Banks was born January 30, 1904 in Johnson County, the daughter of H.
M. “Doc” and Loumintie Davis Hannah. She was a member of the United
Baptist Church. Her husband, Elder Elzie Banks died in
December1988. Surviving are 3 sons, Elzie Loren Banks of
Morehead, Carl Ray Banks of Cincinnati, OH., and Robert H. Banks of
Westminister, MD.; 3 daughters, Velma Arrowood of Meally, Violet Givens
of Cedar Park, TX, and Lou Banks Wallen of Birmingham, Ala.; 14
grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and
3 step great grandchildren. Officiating at services at Buffalo
United Baptist Church at Meally, were Elders Flem Arrowood, Ivan
Butcher and Flem Allen Arrowood with Burial was in Banks Cemetery at

Estill Blair, 81, died Saturday, April 1, in Carey, OH. Mr. Blair was
born August 10, 1907 in Johnson County, the son of Harlan and Rosalee
Caudill Blair. He was retired from Atlas Crankshaft Corp. of Fostoria,
OH and a member of the Carey Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded
in death by one daughter, two brothers and 6 sisters. Surviving are his
wife, Anna Marie May Blair; 2 sons, Joe and Charles both of Carey; 4
daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Mary L.) Stevens of Channelview, TX, Mrs. Robert
(Anna Lee) Webb of Wabash, IN, Mrs. James (Melba J.) Blair, and Mrs.
Donald (V. Sue) Wentling, both of Carey; 2 brothers, Wallace
Blair and Uel Blair both of Collista; 3 sisters, Mrs. Hershell (Ethel)
Weddington of Leander, and Mrs. Willie (Josephine) Hitchcock and Mrs.
Thomas (Meriam) Hammond, both of Collista; 16 grandchildren; 16 great
grandchildren. Services held in Carey Freewill Baptist Church with
Brother Harry Mead and Rev. Robert Webb officiating. Burial was

Blair, 64. Mrs. Blair was born April 2, 1925 in Johnson County, the
daughter of Trigg and Ruby Baldwin McKenzie of New Carlton, MD. She was
a member of the Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Frank Blair in 1976. Surviving are her mother, Ruby Baldwin
McKenzie of New Carlton, Md., 3 sons, Frank Blair, Mike Blair and
William Blair all of Columbus, OH.; one daughter, Judy Rogers of

Former Johnson County resident, Fannie Blanton, 76, died April 19, in
Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Blanton was born September 25,
1912 in Johnson County, the daughter of Stephen and Mary Jane Bayes
Lemaster officiating. Her husband, Payne Blanton died in
1985. Surviving are two sons, Ellis Wayne Blanton, of Taylor, Mi,
and Payne Blanton, Jr., of Ypsilanti, Mi; 4 grandchildren and 1 great
grandchild. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 22 in
Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Claude Goble and Mansford
Fannin. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Former Johnson County resident Hurshel L. Blanton, 73, died April 14,
at the home of his son, in Raleigh, NC. Mr. Blanton was born February
18, 1916 in Johnson County, the son of the late Oscar and Carmen
Williams Blanton of Belle, WV, formerly of Red Bush. He was a retired
operator of DuPont Chemical Co. of Belle, with 36 years of service. He
was also a member of Farrar Memorial Baptist Church, Rand, WV and the
Masonic Lodge of Marden, WV. Surviving are his wife, Trexie Ann Brown
Blanton; one son, William J. of Raleigh; three daughters, Barbara
Jacobson, of McLean, VA., Carol Rominc of Louisville and Margie Ann
Weaver of Raleigh; two sisters, Edith Blevins, of Lexington and Margie
Blanton, of Belle; 10 grandchildren. Funeral services held
Tuesday, April 18, in Farrar Memorial Baptist Church with Omhar Rucker

Russell Blevins, 73, died Thursday, April 27 in Cabell Huntington
Hospital. Mr. Blevins was born November 22, 1915 in Johnson County, the
son of John Ellic and Flora Mae McKenzie Blevins. He was a
self-employed merchant and a member of Chestnut Grove Enterprise
Church. Surviving are his wife, Eunice Conley Blevins; three
sons, Paul of East Point, Lon and Mike both of Findlay, OH; two
daughters, Lenora Ratliff of Paintsville and Sue Lemaster of Hager
Hill; four sisters, Mary Brooks of Pikeville, Malta Lively of
Paintsville, Bertie Blair of Hager Hill and Junie Davis of Cincinnati,
OH; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services held
Sunday, April 30, in Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Ellis Hamilton
officiating. Burial was in Spencer-Blevins Cemetery at East Point.

James T. (Jimmy) Colvin, 61, died Monday, April 17, in Chelsea
Community Hospital, Chelsea, MI. Mr. Colvin was born October 22, 1927
in Johnson County, the son of Claude and Mary Ethel Blair Colvin. He
was a maintenance man in a department store. Surviving are two sons,
Claude Colvin, of Queens, NY and James Colvin of Adrian, MI; two
daughters, Dottie McDonald, of Manchester, MI and Mary Crossett of
Grasslakes, MI; two sisters, Jeanett Jones of Dayton, OH and Betty
Daniels of Thealka; one niece; one nephew; and 5 grandchildren. Funeral

Hilliard, OH, and Dimple Reed of Columbus, OH; two brothers, Herman

Samuel Lewis Crider, 92, died Thursday, April 13. Mr. Crider was born
May 9, 1896 in Floyd County, the son of Samuel and Nancy Music Crider.
He was a retired coal miner. He was preceded in death by his first
wife, Lillie Crider in June 1976. Surviving are his wife, Mae Branham
Maynard Crider; two stepsons, Fred Maynard of Hawthorne, CA and John M.
Maynard of Chicago, IL; one daughter, Nell Music of East Point; two
stepdaughters, Ruth Parker of Columbus, OH and Laura Nielsen of Covina,
CA; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several step
grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held
Sunday, April 16, in East Point Church of Christ, with Dave Flannery

Paul (Red Doug) Davis, 49, died Thursday, April 27, in Central Baptist
Hospital, Lexington. Mr. Davis was born April 2, 1940 in Johnson
County, the son of Frank and Eula Kissinger Davis. Surviving are three
brothers, Miles, Elmer, and Jack, all of Paintsville, and three
sisters, Evelyn Rasnake, of Paintsville, Nella Brown of Cleveland, OH,

April 7 in Hardin Memorial Hospital, Radcliff. Mrs. Dennison was born
June 19, 1897 in Johnson County, the daughter of Ricky Shade and Mary
Margrett Mollette. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Walker Dennison, Sr., and a son,
Walker Dennison, Jr., Surviving are five daughters, Ellen Sego, of
Louisville, Nancy M. Hienes, of Marion, Betty Krausman, of Radcliff,
Jewell Calmes, of Xenia, OH, and Lorraine Jones, of Nashville, TN; one
half brother, Irvin Ward, of Ohio; three half sisters, Jenny Wells, of
West Van Lear; Rosalee Davis of Meally, and Elaine Gearheart; and 15

Gypsy Goble, 91, died Monday, April 3, in Highlands Regional Medical
center. Mrs. Goble was born Jan 6, 1898 in Johnson County, the daughter
of John Elliott Blevins and May McKenzie. She was a member of West Van
Lear Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband,
William Thomas Goble, in 1979. Surviving are one son, William Goble, of
Hager Hill and five daughters, Marie Hall and Goldie Webb, both of Van
Lear, Elva Cora Blevins of West Van Lear, June Salyers of Columbus, OH,
and Bertha Music of Springfield, OH; one brother, Russell Blevins, of

Surviving are his wife Linda Ann VanHoose Hannah; two sons, Larry Dean
VanHoose and Walter VanHoose; two daughters, Michele Ann VanHoose and
Nellie Bernice VanHoose; three brothers, Bruce Hannah, Morris Hannah,
and Inoch Hannah; and two sisters, Betty Fairchild, and Helen Ratliff.

Arnold “Tige” Herald, 67, of Prestonsburg, died Wednesday, April 26, at
Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mr. Herald was born January 8, 1922
in Prestonsburg, the son of the late John W. and Alice Burga Herald. He
was a heavy equipment operator, a member of the Lancer VFW, the UMWA
and the construction union. Also, he was a veteran of WW II. Surviving
are his wife, Phyllis Hyden Herald, one son, John Arnold of
Paintsville, two daughters, Clora “Sissy”Morgan, and Rhoda Jane Lawson,
both of Prestonsburg; and four grandchildren, Leslie Jan Morgan,
Jennifer Lynne and John David Herald, and Brandie Nicole Lawson.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 28, in Floyd Funeral Home,
with Revs. Wade Martin Hughes and Lorie Vannucci officiating. Burial

Former Paintsville resident, Cleo V. Prater, 42, died Thursday, April
6, at her Marion, OH residence. Mrs. Prater was born December 21, 1946,
in Paintsville, the daughter of Marvin Little and Hulda Ratliff. She
was a member of the Baptist Church, Eagles Lodge #337 of Marion and
Moose Lodge #889 of Marion and was employed by Hill’s Department Store
as department head for 10 years. Surviving are her mother; her husband,
Robert J. Prater, Sr., one son, Robert Prater, Jr., at home; two
daughters, Cindy Blanton, of Richmond, and Michelle Osborn, of
Pensacola, FL, three brothers, Marvin Little, of Paris, Ceasar Little,
of Paintsville, and Conrad Little, of Marion; two sisters, Gloria Jean
Sullivan and Joan McCarty, both of Paintsville, and two grandchildren.

Ramey was the son of the late Fairy Ramey and Zella Salyer Ramey. He
managed the Ramey Branch Trailer Park at Volga. Surviving are his wife,
Joan; one daughter, Cindy Daniels, of Columbus; one son, Mark Ramey of
South Carolina; three grandchildren. Funeral services were held

preceded in death by his wife, Oakie Ward Robinson, in 1985. Surviving

71. Mrs. Sanders was born March 7, 1918 in Lawrence County, the
daughter of Millard Bowling and Annie Bowens. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Oba Sanders, in July 1988. Surviving are four sisters,
Ollie Sexton, of St. Helens, Or, Gertrude Runyon of Kermit, WV, Myrtle
Ratliff of Springfield, OH, and Nellie Webb of Prestonsburg.
Officiating at services in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel was Dick

Flat Gap resident, Andrew Edward Skaggs, 94, died Sunday, April 30, in
Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mr. Skaggs was born Nov 23, 1894 in
Johnson County, the son of John C. and Candace Lyon Skaggs. He was a
retired farmer and member of Point Pleasant Enterprise Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ova Kelly Skaggs; one son, Arvin Skaggs, of
Flat Gap; one daughter, Arlene Skaggs of Flat Gap; and one
granddaughter, Alice Kestner. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May
2, in Point Pleasant Enterprise Baptist church with Ellis Hamilton,
Paul V. Preston and Lafe Skaggs officiating. Burial was in Lyon
Cemetery at Keaton, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of

Retired mechanic, William "Bill" Smith, 66, died Saturday, April 8, at
his Paintsville residence. Mr. Smith was born July 9, 1922, in Johnson
County, the son of John and Nancy Patrick Smith. Surviving are one
brother, Kenny of Sitka; and four sisters, Ida Marie Smith of
Paintsville, Betty Smith of Thelma, Euel Fairchilds of Boons Camp, and
Myrtle Smith of Van Lear. Funeral services were held Monday, April 10,
in Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Baker and Steve Sluss

Lydia Margaret Spradlin, 84, died Saturday, April 29, in Troy, OH. Mrs.
Spradlin was born September 10, 1904 in Johnson County, the daughter of
Jesse and Cynthia Blair Arms. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Albert Spradlin in November 1976. Surviving are 3 sons, Orbin
Spradlin and Richard Spradlin both of Hager Hill and Elmon D. Spradlin
of Prestonsburg; 2 daughters, Audrey Blair of Ashland, and Edna Lee
Blair of St. Paris, OH; 13 grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 2, in
Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Dick VanHoose and Herb Arms

Steven M. Tackett, one month, died Thursday, April 20, at home. The
infant was born March 22 the daughter of Tera Tackett. Surviving are
her mother, and one sister, Geraldine Tackett, of West Van Lear.

Fred VanHoose, 95, died Sunday, April 2, in his Sitka home. Mr.
VanHoose was born December 30, 1893 in Johnson County, the son of
Albert and Loutisha Boyd VanHoose. He was a retired miner and a
member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two
wives, Gertrude Short VanHoose in December 1959 and Monnie Ferguson
VanHoose in 1982. Surviving are 3 daughters, Ollie McKenzie and
Ernestine Hackney both of Sitka, and Reba Castle of Nippa; 1 brother,
Clyde VanHoose of Sitka; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 5, at 1 p.m. in
Sitka Freewill Baptist Church with Revs. C. C. Hall, James K. Caudill
and Ralph Cordle officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at

member of the Old Friendship United Baptist Church. Surviving are her
husband, Walter Ward, Sr., two sons, Delmar Ward of Raeford, NC, and
Walter Ward, Jr., of Williamsport; one brother, Albert Bowen, of Oil

the United Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband,
James K. "Polk" Williams in 1971. Surviving are a son, Arnold Williams
of Byersville, OH; 2 daughters, Barbara Sparks of Ashland and Delphine
Blanton of Oil Springs; one sister, Betha Blair of Barnetts Creek; 7

Hager Hill resident, Kenneth Williams, 58, died Tuesday, April 18, in
the V. A. Hospital, Lexington. Mr. Williams was born Aug 24, 1930 in
Johnson County, the son of Bee and Grace Dotson Williams. He was a
heavy equipment mechanic for Adams Construction and a member of
Collista Freewill Baptist church. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis
Conley Williams, one son, Timothy Williams, of Hager Hill, one
daughter, Kennalean Fannin of Hager Hill; six brothers, Orville, Paul,
Richard, Bill, Bob, and jack, all of OH; four sisters, Mable Scott, of
Leander, Susie Green and Linda Snelling, both of VA, and Wauletta Ward
of Denver; three grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday,
April 20, in Collista Freewill Baptist Church, with Harold Conley
officiating. Burial was in Conley Family Cemetery at Hager Hill, with
