FLOYD COUNTY — Remas Amburgey, 79, of Hager Hill, formerly of Knott
County, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical
Center, Paintsville. Born Jan. 12, 1928, at Pinetop, he was a son of
the late Robert "Bob" and Mary Liz Bentley Amburgey. He was a retired
coal miner, member of the U.M.W.A. District 17 and Local Union 1741. He
was also preceded in death by four brothers, Lloyd, Hobert, Ivas and
Reevel Amburgey. Survivors include his wife, Imilee Thornsberry
Amburgey; two sons, Cledith Ray Amburgey of Shelby, Ohio and Herbert
Amburgey of Staffordsville; two daughters, Wilma Amburgey and Sheila
Amburgey, both of Hager Hill; two brothers, Emil Amburgey of Madison,
Ind. and Orbin Amburgey of Harlan, Ind.; two sisters, Delphenia Mullins
of Pinetop and Olga Combs of Leburn; four grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Funeral services were
Saturday, April 21, at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin, with Old
Regular Baptist ministers officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Memorial

Funeral Home in Louisa, Ky., for Billy Nelson Bailey, 68, of Louisa,
who passed away Wednesday, April 18 2007 at King’s Daughters Medical
Center in Ashland, Ky. Mr. Bailey was born Oct. 8, 1938 in Martin, Ky.,
son of the late Dr. Thurmand Britan and Sibyl Preston Bailey. He was a
retired vocational education teacher, a member of the Elizabeth Baptist
Church, a Kentucky Colonel, and a U.S. Army veteran. He was also
preceded in death by one son, James Edwin Bailey, and two half-brothers
and two half-sisters. Surviving are his wife, Clotine Ferguson Bailey
of Louisa; one daughter, Gina (Randy) Fyffe of Russell, Ky.; one son,
Brian (Angie) Bailey of Louisa; and four grandchildren. The service

MAGOFFIN COUNTY — Hershel Dick Bailey, 57, of Salyersville, died
Monday, April 23, 2007 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center,
Paintsville. Born July 31, 1949, in Magoffin County, he was a son of
the late William Dock and Stella Davis Bailey. He was of the Baptist
faith. He was also preceded in death by a son, Benjamin Bailey; and two
brothers, Buster Bailey and Jerry Wayne Bailey. Survivors include his
wife, Madgie Lee Ingram Bailey of Salyersville; two sons, Joe Bailey
and Scottie Ray Bailey, both of Salyersville; a daughter Bertie Kay
Bailey of Salyersville; and six sisters, Ellen Newman of Wilmington,
Ohio, Rosa Mae Risner of Royalton, Helen Shepherd, Lizzie Miller, Donna
Howard, and Ella Maye Bailey, all of Salyersville. Funeral services
will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 26, at Magoffin County Funeral Home
Chapel, Salyersville, with Irvin Allen Jr. and Lloyd Ward officiating.
Burial will be in Brushy Fork Cemetery, Brushy Fork, under direction of

April 13, 2007 at her residence. Born July 1, 1936, in Martin County,
she was a daughter of the late Samuel Delong and Elizabeth Adkins. She
was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Otis Cantrill.
Survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Lee Hampton of Georgetown,
and Mary Elaine Burton of Sitka; three sisters, Ruby Jo Black and Eva

Castle, 92, of Winchester, Ky., who passed away Thursday, April 26 2007

born May 7, 1914, in Magoffin County, Ky., daughter of the late Henry
and Dora Tackett Vanover. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Born Jan. 16, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Viola
Conley. She was a healthcare caregiver. She was preceded in death by
two brothers, James Willard and Nevil Conley. Survivors include

Delbert Ray Conley, 79, of Catlettsburg, Ky., passed away Wednesday,
April 25, 2007, at his residence. Mr. Conley was born Feb. 1, 1928, in
Paintsville, Ky., a son of the late Frank and Elsie Whitt Conley. He
was also preceded in death by two brothers, Darrell Conley and Orville
Conley. He was a graduate of Wurtland High School in 1947 and of the
Baptist faith. He retired from Armco Steel Corp.’s No. 3 Coating Line.
He was a U.S. Army Infantry veteran and served in the Korean War. Mr.
Conley is survived by his wife, Bernice Conn Conley; three sons,
Michael Ray Conley and his wife, Sherri, Patrick Conn Conley and his
wife, Kimberly, and Adrian Bryan Conley and his wife, Sarah, all of
Catlettsburg; a brother, Wendell Conley and his wife, Nancy, of
Cannonsburg, Ky.; three sisters, Mildred Brooks of Huntington, W.Va.,
Emogene Hanners of Dayton, Ohio, and Glema Grubb and her husband,
James, of Catlettsburg; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will
be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Steen Funeral Home- Marshall

Pauline Burton Daniels, 95, of Paintsville, died Wednesday, April 18,
2007 at Mt. Manor Nursing Home, Paintsville. Born Nov. 25, 1911, in
Lawrence County, she was a daughter of the late Foster and Rachel
Gibson Burton. She was a homemaker. She was also preceded in death by
her husband, Mitchell Daniels; a son, Paul V. Daniels; a granddaughter;
and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include four sons, James F.
Daniels and Thomas M. Daniels, both of Paintsville, John B. Daniels of
Sevierville, Tenn., and Robert E. Daniels of Thelma; three daughters,

OHIO — James E. "Shorty" Estepp, 80, of Marysville, Ohio, died Friday,
April 27, 2007 at his residence. Born Oct. 5, 1926, in Johnson County,
he was a son of the late Oakley and Esta Lemaster Estepp. He was an
associate of Denison Hydraulics, and a WW II U.S. Army veteran. He was
also preceded in death by four siblings, Everett Estepp, Mary Elizabeth
Estepp, Betty Rae Lemaster, and Alka "Dude" Coppers. Survivors include
his wife, Martha "Ginny" Estepp of Waverly, Ohio; four sons, Raymond

1918, at Offutt, she was a daughter of the late Logan and Bessie Meta
Peery Akers. She was a former grocer at Ran Arnett's Grocery (Bess
Arnett's Store) for 35 years, a former member of Eastern Star Adah
Chapter #24, Miriam Rebekah Lodge #31 and I.O.O.F. Lodge #293. She was
also preceded in death by her husband, Virgil R. "Cowboy" Griffith;
three sisters, Evelyn Stephens, Ival Whitaker and Garnet Mayo; and two
brothers, Johnny and Clyde Akers. Survivors include a son, Johnny Logan
Griffith of Prestonsburg. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today,

Ann Runyon Gullett, 59, passed away on April 4, 2007. Born in
Williamson, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Maggie
Runyon. Ann was a graduate of Belfry High School and Berea College. She
taught art for several years at Southern Middle School, before retiring
to be a full-time mom. She was an avid gardener, reader and cook who
gave unselfishly to her family and friends. She is survived by her
husband of 35 years, Thomas J. Gullett of Lexington, Ky.; daughter,
Ashlea Gullett (Tim Beeson) of Georgetown, Ky.; son, Thomas C. Gullett
(Shalanta Nicely) of Lexington; brother, Bronson Wolford (Birdie) of
Lake Wales, Fla.; one brother, Leon Wolford (Marilyn) of Kingsport,
Tenn.; eight nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and -nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruby Meeker of Columbus, Ohio.
Her immediate family would like to thank Dr. Rachel Harper and her
team, and our family and friends who supported Ann through her
courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma. Ann demonstrated how life and
its challenges could be handled with grace, strength and dignity.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Kerr Brothers Funeral
Home, Harrodsburg Road, by Pastor Mark Sarver. Burial will follow in

2007) at her residence. She was born Feb. 13, 1936 in Paintsville, Ky;
the daughter of the late Abe and Rosa Short Music. She was a homemaker
and a nurses aide at Jo-Linn Health Center for over 15 yrs. She
graduated from Paintsville, Ky High School and attended New Valley
Missionary Baptist Church. She has lived here over 44 yrs moving here
from McDowell, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband: Delmer
Hamilton who died Jan. 28, 2007. Three brothers: Homer Music, Earnest

Edna Hammond went home to be with her Lord on Monday afternoon, April
30, 2007 in King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was preceded in death
by her husband of 66 years, James Harry Hammond; and a son, James. Edna
was born in East Point, Ky., on July 23, 1917, to Dolly Stapleton and
Malcolm Hager. Edna was a homemaker for her family. She also loved her
church family at Oakland Avenue Baptist Church where she taught
kindergarten Sunday School for more than 50 years. Surviving are two
sons and their wives, Roger (Ann) of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Ronald
(Kay) of Genoa, Ohio; two daughters and their husbands, Betty (Sam)
Rice of Ashland, Ky., and Danna (John) Powers of Ashland. Also
surviving are grandchildren, Ronnie Hammond, Larry Joe Hammond, Kathy

Ohio Masonic Home. She was born November 13, 1933 in Paintsville, KY,
the daughter of the late Tom and Theresa (Huston) Duty. Betty was a
member of the Calvary Enterprise Baptist Church in Fairborn, OH. In
addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 47
years, Ollie in 1995; a grandson, Tony Hughes; and a brother, Gary
England. She is survived by two sons, Gary Hughes, and wife Vicki of
Yellow Springs, OH, Orien Hughes of Quincy, OH; three daughters, Lola

Bryce E. Kimbler, 80, of Eaton, OH died April 7, 2007, at Vancrest
Health Care Center in Eaton. Born October 27, 1926, in Boons Camp, KY,
he was the son of Benjamin H. and Mary G. (Mollett) Kimbler. He retired
in 1989 from Inland Division of General Motors in Vandalia, OH, with
over 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World
War II. Mr. Kimbler was a member of Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons
of Ohio; past master of Friendship Chapter #245 of West Carrollton, OH;
Fellowship Lodge #106, F&AM and the American Legion Post, both in
New Paris, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Gladys V. (Meek) Kimbler, in 1999; son, Mark J. Kimbler, in 2002; half
sisters, Hazel Long and Clara Sprigs; and half brother, Benjamin
Stanford. Survivors include a son, Matthew W. (Doris R.) Kimbler of
Eaton; brother, Nolen Kimbler of Kettering, OH; grandchildren, Jessica
Kimbler-Haas, Joseph, Bryce, Mariah, Kelsey and Destiny Kimbler.

with the Lord on Friday, April 6, 2007, in Bryant Health Care Center in
Ironton. He was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Wittensville, Ky., to Milton and
Lottie (Witten) Meadows. Redford is survived by two sons, Gerald
(Phyllis) Meadows of Flatwoods, Ky., and Phillip (Deborah) Meadows of
Ashland, Ky.; one brother, Bencil Meadows of Paintsville, Ky.; five
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anna in 2004; four
brothers, Clarence, James, Marshall and William; and one sister, Willa
Lee Bentley. Redford was a Free Will Baptist minister for more than 50
years and pastored churches in Michigan and Ashland. He was most
recently pastor at Union Free Will Baptist Church on Ohio 140 in

Ruby Jewel (Salyers) went to be with the Lord on Wednesday April 25,
2007, after a long illness. Ruby was born on March 22, 1919 in
Paintsville (Volga) Kentucky, the daughter of Lonnie and Lillie
Salyers. Ruby's life has touched a countless number of people through
the years. She had a nursing home ministry for the elderly and
shut-in's that spanned sixteen or eighteen years in the 70's and 80's,
Ruby is survived by her husband of 45 years, Harold Rister; two
daughters Barbara Dolan, of Trotwood, Ohio and Kathy and son-in- law
Dale Werts of Trotwood, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Charles (Bud),
Terry, Lynn, Rhonda, Kimberly, Harley, and Dale Jr; twelve

On the clear, sunny morning of April 19, 2007, James Douglas Skaggs
gently left the loving arms of his family to spend eternity in the
light of our loving God. Jim was born on June 27, 1934, as the second
child of Van Skaggs and Eurcle Davis Skaggs. Jim’s joy was his family
and he is survived by his wife and companion of 51 years, Phyllis
Tackett Skaggs of Cocoa, Fla., and Lowmansville, Ky.; sons James
Phillip Skaggs of Lowmansville and Timothy Ray Skaggs of Houston,
Texas; one sister, Betty Skaggs Daniel of Titusville, Fla.; one
brother, David Ray Skaggs of Lowmansville; two grandsons, James Phillip
Skaggs II of Cocoa and Jeffrey Douglas Skaggs of Houston; along with
numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his
mother, father, and brother, Paul Edward Skaggs. Jim will be remembered
most as a loving husband, father and brother. In addition, he was a
successful businessman, building three businesses including Big Sandy
Heating and Cooling of Paintsville, Ky. Jim reveled in the awe of
nature and spent his best days with family on the farm. Most
importantly, Jim lived his life as a testimony to his savior Jesus
Christ and our pain is eased by the knowledge of His peace. The family
requests that memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church of
Paintsville, Ky. A memorial for family and friends will be held at a

FLOYD COUNTY — Marie Bradley Slone, 93, of Wayland, died Monday, April
30, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center, Paintsville. Born June 10,
1913, in Dema, she was a daughter of the late Butler Bradley and Mary
Collins Bradley Huff. She was a homemaker and a member of Lancer
Baptist Church, Lancer. She was also preceded in death by her husband,
Kermit Slone; and a son, Kermit Edsel Slone. Survivors include four
sons, Keith Slone of Somerset, Ray Slone of Dayton, Ohio, Johnny Slone
of Jupiter, Fla., and Scott Slone of Wayland; three daughters, Linda
Ward of Hager Hill, Sandra Martin of Prestonsburg, and Mary Franklin of
Prestonsburg; a sister, Lena Hopkins of Wayland; 14 grandchildren; and
eight great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday,

at her residence. She was born on June 13, 1951 in Paintsville, KY to
James Herbert and Sylvia (Roberts) Preston. She married Jerry Spence in
Wabash on August 25, 1990. She worked at Wagners in Wabash and AGP
Plastics in Peru, Timbercrest and Peabody Retirement Communities, and
United Technologies/Bryan Mfg in North Manchester. She received her CNA
license while working at Americare Nursing Home in Wabash. She then
worked at Community Care and Millers Merry Manor East in Wabash 15
years. She is survived by Husband, Jerry Spence of Wabash; Step-Son,
Jared Spence of Wabash; 4 Sisters, Sandy (Delmar) Myers and Judy
Bashore, both of North Manchester, and Pam (Randy) Darnell and Anita
Fager of Wabash; 3 Brothers, Ronnie "Ron" (Pat) Preston of North

Funeral Home of Lexington, Ky., for Lester Raymond Travis, 78, of
Lexington, who passed away Thursday, April 26 at Winchester Health
Center in Winchester, Ky. Mr. Travis was born April 30, 1928 in
Lawrence County, Ky., son of the late Frank and Della Cordle Travis. He
was a charter member and trustee of Fayette Chapel United Baptist
Church in Paris, Ky., and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was also preceded
in death by two sisters, Pauline Ramey and Lila Yates. Surviving are

8, 2007 at University Hospital, Louisville. Born Jan. 19, 1927, in

Matthews. She was a homemaker, a member of the Louisville Deaf Club and
attended Northeast Christian Church. She was also preceded in death by

Sharon Jean Tucker, 61, Lagro, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday,
April 4, 2007, at 11:16 a.m. at Wabash County Hospital. She was born
March 6, 1946, in Van Lear, Ky., to Eugene and Katherine (Young) Hyden.
She married Charles Tucker on Nov. 30, 1965, in Clintwood, Va., and he
survives. Mrs. Tucker was a member of Emmanuel Freewill Baptist Church.
She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She loved her family, especially her
grandchildren. She is also survived by two daughters, Kathy (Kenny)
Williams, Lagro, and Ronda (the Rev. Randall) Anderson, Manassas, Va.;
his mother, Katherine Hyden, Warsaw; five grandsons, Kenny Williams
Jr., Lagro, Kyle Williams, Charleston, S.C., Keith Williams, Lagro,
James Anderson, Manassas, Va., and Tucker Anderson, Manassas, Va.; two
granddaughters, Rachel Anderson and, and Randa Anderson, both of
Manassas, Va.; three sisters, Patty (Dan) Clifton, Lagro, Christine
(Johnnie) Spears, Wabash, and Charlotte (Mike) Smith, Syracuse; four
brothers, Roger (Mazie) Hyden, Warsaw, Larry (Sue) Hyden, Mentone, Tony
Hyden, Fort Wayne, and Bill (Lydia) Hyden, South Whitley. She was also
preceded in death by a brother, Glen Hyden, and a sister, Tina Hyden.

Amanda Jewel Chandler Wheeler, 90, of Raceland, Ky., died Thursday,
April 5, 2007, in Ashland, Ky. Mrs. Wheeler was born Aug. 14, 1916, in
Chandlerville, Ky., a daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Castle
Chandler. She was a homemaker and attended Martha United Baptist
Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Eskie M. Wheeler; daughters, Martha Wheeler and Kay Frances
Stephenson; four brothers; and two sisters. Mrs. Wheeler is survived by
two sons, Clarence W. Wheeler of Raceland and Charles “Buck” Wheeler;
two daughters, Janet Dolores Huffman of Raceland and Carol Sue Trott of
