GEORGE WASHINGTON AUXIER
1905-1976
 
Services for Dr. George Washington Auxier, 70, who died Friday in
Simi Valley, CA were held in Sun City, AZ.
 
Dr. Auxier was born in Johnson County, near Paintsville, on November
27, 1905. He was educated in county schools prior to his high school
graduation from Ft. Thomas, KY. He received his AB and MA degrees
from Miami University, Oxford, OH, where he was a four-letter
athlete. He obtained his PhD in 1938 from Ohio State University.
During his under graduate years, he was active in the Beta Theta Pi
fraternity and a member of several honorary historical organizations.
He was a member of the Masonic Order and a Kentucky Colonel.
 
He was a retired Federal employee having served in the executive
offices of Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson. During
World War II he served in an Army Intelligence capacity. His span of
more than thirty years in the Federal government saw service with The
Commerce Department, Atomic Energy Commission and State Department.
He was a graduate of the National War College in Washington, D.C. Dr.
Auxier had lectured in U. S. history and diplomacy at Ohio State
University, American University, George Washington University, and in
Business Administration at the University of Maryland.
 
He retired from Federal Service in 1968. He moved from Maryland to
Sun City, AZ in 1973.
 
He is survived by his widow, Fernallen A., two sons, George C. of San
Francisco, CA and John W. of Mundelein, IL and a daughter Mrs.
Catherine Pittenger of Simi Valley, CA and one grandchild, Sally Kay
Pittenger and three sisters, Mrs. P. T. Holbrook, and Miss Madge
Auxier of Paintsville, Mrs. A. G. T. Dorton of Lexington and one
brother, Mr. Earl M. Auxier of LaFollette, TN.
