IRA S CANTRELL
1880-1943

The above is the likeness of that of Ira S. Cantrell and his loving
companion Ollie (Cheek) Cantrell. These good people are direct
representatives of the early settlers of this section of Kentucky
and represent some of the largest and most prominent families. They
both were born on Hargus Creek, a tributary of Big Paint Creek and
what is now known as Win.

Ira was born October the Ninth, Eighteen-Hundred and Eighty. He was
the son of the late Elijah and Nancy Adkins Cantrell.

Sister Ollie was born October the Tenth, Eighteen-Hundred and
Seventy-Seven and was the daughter of James and Mary Cheek.

In their early young man and womanhood or on May the Thirty-First
Eighteen-Hundred and Ninety Nine, these good people met and were
married and to this union were born three sons; Hubert, Joe and
Ervin. At the age of fifteen months, Ervin by the reason of death
crossed into that good land.

In about the year of Nineteen-hundred and Twenty, they together with
their family moved into the coal fields at Jenkins, where they lived
a number of years and later moved to the city of Wheelwright at
which place he served as police judge for fourteen years. Ira
served with armed forces of the United States in the Cuban uprising
and was mustered out with an honorable discharge.

They both like their forebears, believe strongly in God and were
members of the Low Gap church of United Baptist.

About one year ago Brother Ira found himself in failing health and
his family took him to some of the best skilled physicians, yet in
spite of all that loving hands and medical skill could do, on March
the TwentyThird Nineteen-Hundred and Forty- Three, he crossed into
that land of God. The body was returned to his home at Wheelwright
and kept among his many friends until the Twenty-Fifth, when it was
taken back to the old home on Hargus and their laid to rest with
those of the family who had outstripped him in this run of life.

Services were held at the grave in charge of Elder Kendricks
Blanton.
