 VIRGINIA LEE GEIGER
1958

Mrs. Virginia Lee Geiger, well-known resident of this city, died Friday
afternoon, June 13, at her home on Euclid Avenue after a three years’
illness.

The daughter of the late Daniel Marion and Jessica Vaughan Hager, she was a
descendant of two prominent pioneer families whose activities are interwoven
with the history of Johnson County and whose efforts contributed to its
development and progress. The Hager family is of German descent. Her great-
grandfather, John Hager, Sr., was born in Hesse Cassel, Germany, and came to
this country as a British subject during the Revolutionary War, later
joining the Colonists and fighting with them. At the close of the war he
located near Lynchburg, Va., and about 1806 came to Kentucky with his two
sons, James and Daniel, and settled near the mouth of Johns Creek in Floyd
County. Her grandfather, Daniel Hager, moved to Paintsville in 1852 and
engaged in the mercantile and hotel business. He was for some time a
brigadier general in the militia, served as the first sheriff of Johnson
County and was a member of the State Legislature. Her father was for many
years the leading businessman of this city. With his brother, Sam P., he
formed a successful partnership in the mercantile business, which they
conducted during Civil War Days. Her mother was the daughter of Henry
Stephen Vaughan of Volga whose English ancestors came to the Big Sandy
Valley from Halifax, Virginia, where they had settled in early days. He
served as County Judge of Johnson County and was a Methodist preacher. A
lifelong resident of this city, Mrs. Geiger received her early education in
the city schools and later studied music at the Detroit Conservatory and at
Ashland College in Ashland.

She was married in April 1900 to O. C. Geiger, who survives. Their marriage
in the old First Methodist Church was the first church wedding held in that
building. Mrs. Geiger was a devout and loyal member of the First Methodist
Church and was active in the Women’s Society of Christian Service, serving
as publicity chairman prior to her illness. She was also a former member of
the D.A.R. She was associated with the H. B. Rice Insurance Company of this
city for about twenty years and later became a partner in the Insurance firm
of Wells, Williams and Geiger. A woman of outstanding qualities, endowed
with a warm and charming personality, she devoted her talents and energies
to the service of her church and to organizations advancing the cultural
interests of the city. She was always gracious and kind and her lofty ideas
and Christian principles were reflected in every phase of her daily life.

Survivors also include a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Marsh of this city; a son,
Dr. Marion B. Geiger, Lewiston, N. Y.; a brother, Russell Hager of this
city; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services
were conducted from the First Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m., Sunday by the
pastor, Rev. O. M. Simmerman. Active pallbearers were Robert Lee Marsh,
Franklin Hager Marsh, Lawrence B. Marsh, John Mark Trimble, Dan J. Williams
and W. R. Meade, Jr.
