Slate Fall Fatal To George Castle At Wayland Mine

Funeral Services Sunday For Veteran Of World War II

George Castle, 37, former resident of this county and naval veteran
of World War II, was killed instantly in a slate fall in a mine at
Wayland Thursday night, September 30.

Mr. Castle, who was night foreman, was assisting the men in removing
some old timber when he was caught beneath a fall of rock and slate.

He was born at Thealka, the son of Lavada Music Castle and the late
Ross Castle. He later moved to Wayland where he had been employed
for a number of years.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian Frisby Castle and eight children.
Surviving also are his mother; three sisters, Mrs. Solon Conley, Pond
Creek, Mrs. Raymond Dale, Sitka, and Mrs. Irene Marrs of this city
and two brothers, James Ira of Wayland, and Ross, Jr., with the U.S.
Army stationed at Battle Creek, Michigan.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church at Wayland at
11:00 a.m., Sunday, October 3. The body was then brought to Thealka
where graveside rites were conducted by members of the Masonic Lodge
of Wayland and Paintsville.

Burial was in the Thealka cemetery under the direction of the Jones
Funeral Home.
