OSCAR W. THOMPSON 1893-1953 Dr. Oscar W. Thompson, 60, Pikeville dentist and president of the Big Sandy Valley Associated, died at 1:10 p.m. Monday October 5 1953 in the Pikeville Methodist Hospital. Dr. Thompson was admitted to the hospital Oct. 2 with injuries suffered when a tractor he was operating turned over on him at this farm near Pikeville. A long-time proponent of the canalization of the Big Sandy River, he was active in community affairs, and was the Republican candidate for the U. S. House of Representatives from the Seventh Congressional District in 1950. Born at Zebulon in Pike County, on July 19, 1893, he was the son of Richard and Nancy Charles Thompson. He attended area schools and was graduated from the Louisville Dental School in 1915 with the highest honors of his class. Dr. Thompson served in the U. S. Army's dental corps in the first World War and held the rank of captain. He was married in 1918 to Miss Hattie Weddington who survives. Other survivors include his father, one daughter, Mrs. Betty Scott, wife of Dr. John Scott, Pikeville, one son, Oscar W. Thompson Jr., a medical student, and two sisters, Mrs. Daisy Stayton, and Mrs. Myrtle Blackburn, both of Pikeville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today at his summer home on the Mayo Trail by Rev. Orville Skeens, pastor of the Pikeville Christian Church.
