Burgess Webb, 74, Dies After Long Illness Cerebral Hemorrhage Takes
Former Merchant Monday

Burgess (Bird) Webb,74, former merchant of this city, died May 17, in a
Lexington hospital.

He had been ill for the past seven years, but his death came unexpectedly
following a cerebral hemorrhage.

Mr. Webb was born December 23, 1874, the son of Epperson and Helen
Preston Webb, both members of prominent Eastern Kentucky families.

Following the death of his father, the family moved to this city where
Mr. Webb attended the city schools and later studied under the late
Professor John B. Wheatley, noted educator of this county.

He became engaged in the mercantile business in early life and in this
field he became a leader. He first established a retail shoe store.

In later years he operated the largest store of general merchandise in
the Big Sandy Valley, and established branch stores in other sections of
the valley. Mr. Webb was well and favorably known throughout Eastern
Kentucky, his business career bringing him in contact with many people.

He was a member of the Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his two sons, Wendell, who died in 1921 at
the age of 11 years, and Dr. Richard Burgess Webb, former U. S. Army
captain, who died June 30, 1946.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. F. S. Van Hoose, and a brother, Sidney A.
Webb, both of Paintsville.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p. m. Wednesday, May 19, by Rev.
Clarence W. Krubs in the chapel of the Paintsville Furniture Company.

Burial was made in the Preston Cemetery.
