This
genealogy which is intended for personal use only,
represents my efforts to pull together the research of
Benjamin W. Allen, in whom I recognize a kindred spirit, although he
was born a
hundred years before me. In order to protect the privacy of the living,
information has been included about the first eight generations
only. Also,
since this genealogy is in the format of a register chart, marriages
without
children may not appear. Several other researchers have
contributed
information about the Harford County, Maryland descendants of John
Allen of
Latimerstown, but much of our information, both Irish and American, is
still
unproven. However, if you are aware of any other errors or
omissions,
please contact me: < [email protected]
> You are also welcome to contact
any other
researchers who are mentioned in this genealogy. Revised and updated
November
2007.
History
There are several theories about the origins of the Allens of
Latimerstown,
Generation 1-2 in this genealogy is sketchy, but there are written records referring to John Allen, born 1692, as being "of Latimerstown."

This
information was
apparently obtained from a Joseph Allen, who wrote a book prior to
1905. The
book is not in my possession; in fact, it is only mentioned in a letter
written
by a Walter W. Allen of Inniscrone, Datchet,
George's
townland was
fairly large: 221 acres. Coolatore was

His will was proved in 1663 [See Calendar
of Wills in the Diocese of Ferns 1601-1800]. This
unexamined will is believed to have
mentioned Susannah, Anne, Elnathan, Elizabeth, George and William. The names of Jehew and Nahomey were attributed
to George and Susannah Allen of Colotore (sic),

Apparently,
there was

Papers in
the
possession of the current owners indicate that Latimerstown was leased
by Oliver
Cromwell to Colonel Camby in 1653 when there was no habitable dwelling.
Col.
Camby was still on the property in 1660, but it was acquired by a Mr.
Jacob at
Rathdowney shortly thereafter.
There are
several
undated buildings on this property now. The square, newer, Georgian
style
portion of the house, with the numerous large windows befitting a
gentleman,
was probably built in the mid 1700s. Inside the house are a number of
spacious
rooms with marble fire places in the livingroom, diningroom and master
bedroom.
A tree-lined road winds up to the house and rose gardens and the
windows once
overlooked a sprawling lawn and a pond.
Other papers currently available at Latimerstown,
indicate that the property was being leased from the
However,
there is a
reference to a deed in Benjamin W. Allen's papers, dated 30 June 1727,
which
indicates that John Allen of "Latimorstown," a farmer, leased a 3/4
share "for lives renewable forever" from Charles Monk of Grangegorman
Dublin Esq the following lands: "Johnstown 188a Garrygibbon 75a 16p

Also,
genealogical
correspondence between Ben and his cousin William H. Allen, makes
reference to
a deed dated 1739, which identified the above John Allen as the owner
of
Latimerstown. Francine Falk-Allen has
provided the following transcription of Deed #70800 from the Registry

Although
there is no

(Robert5, Robert4, John3, Elnathon2,
George1) was born 22 Jan 1804 in Latimerstown, Barony of
Forth,
Wexford, Ireland, and died 28 Apr 1869 in Anne Street, Wexford Town,
Wexford,
Ireland. He married Isabella Frances
HATTON

Notes for
Richard
Maurice ALLEN:
Richard is
rumoured to
have committed suicide when he lost several of his uninsured ships, but
this
has not been verified.
There were
two ships
belonging to the "Allens of Wexford" which were wrecked in Robert's
time:

Although
Richard was a
ship owner, he was described as a "timber/slate merchant" in the 1846
Slater Directory. "R.& R.
Allen" was located at Custom Quay House, Wexford and high on a hill
overlooking his business and the River Slaney, was his magnificent
home,
"Elmville." It is not known
when Richard lost or sold Elmville or when the house changed its name,
but the
exterior and the general locality of the home is described in at least
one book
(circa 1862), so we know it existed then.
The house is believed to have been reincarnated as Farnoque and
The loss
of
"Elmville" may have also coincided with the sale of the family
silver. Only one silver spoon remains, but it is engraved with the
family crest
and the initials "R.M.A." The
existence of this spoon is very significant, since it confirms that the
family
crest predated Benjamin William Allen, and was not his invention.

Ben's diagnosis was meningitis as we currently understand it. Neither

His early

the
difficulties his sons faced educating themselves, he still needed money

growing family who ranged in age from

tray and tea service, engraved with these words: "To Benjamin W. Allen

*" By succeeding
in destroying the very heart of the German defence system, the
Canadians
enabled the British 3rd Army to advance eastward at a great pace. The
success
of the operation had a positive effect all along the western front,
presaging
an imminent Allied victory. The battle itself was actually a complex,
two-operation conflict, that of the Scarpe and that of the
Drocourt-Quéant
Line, both part of the overall Allied strategy which consisted of
exhausting
the enemy who was already retreating eastward. The Battle of the Scarpe
resulted in an Allied advance of no less than eight kilometres, while
at
Drocourt-Quéant, Allied troops expelled the Germans from one of their
vital
defence systems, advancing another six kilometres and taking up new
positions
in front of the next obstacle, the Canal-du-Nord.
The Battle Zone:

These positions thus
became the initial objective of the Canadians. Since the enemy was
expecting an
attack, it was obviously impossible to surprise the Germans.
Consequently, the
strategy adopted was to launch successive frontal attacks to exhaust
the enemy
troops.
When the 2nd and 3rd
Canadian Divisions arrived in the sector, they became responsible for
the front
that extended northward from Neuville-Vitasse to the
Key Factors: Use of
Massive Artillery and Moving H-Hour Up
General Currie had no
less than 14 field artillery brigades and nine heavy artillery brigades
at his
disposal in the way of supporting fire. In addition to the artillery of
the 2nd
and 3rd Canadian Divisions already engaged in the offensive, these
units
included the artillery of the 15th, 16th and 39th British Divisions and
three
army brigades. In short, the massive artillery support proved to be
crucial in
advancing rapidly and exhausting enemy forces that were so well located
in
their defensive positions.
Monday, August 26, had
been chosen as the day of attack. The drizzling rain would not make the
advance
easy. H-hour, which was initially set for dawn, was moved up to
The

to capture a north-south line, west of Monchy-le-Preux, and then move
east as
far as possible. The intermediate objective was to break the
Fresnes-Rouvroy
Line and capture Cagnicourt, Dury and Etaing.
Once these manoeuvres
were successfully executed, an even larger task awaited the Canadians —
breaking the Drocourt-Quéant Line and, finally, establishing a front
line
immediately west of Canal-du-Nord, beyond which the enemy would likely
have
retreated.
Preparations:
Preliminary Raids, and Road and Railway Repairs
The Canadians did not
enjoy the rest period that usually followed participation in major
operations
such as the earlier Battle of Amiens. Furthermore, on August 23, they

In the first three days
of the battle, the 2nd and 3rd Divisions had advanced more than eight
kilometres over rough, broken land furrowed with extremely
well-fortified
trenches. Nevertheless, the Canadians succeeded in reaching the great
majority
of their objectives and captured 3,300 prisoners and a large number of
guns.
The Drocourt-Quéant

After a 48-hour

In the centre, the 4th
Canadian Division had also been fighting a hard battle between Dury and
the
main road, on the front trenches of the Drocourt-Quéant Line that were
on a
long exposed ridge of Mont Dury. Although the Germans had a
topographical
advantage that enabled them to fire and bomb from elevated positions,
and
despite their heavy losses, the Canadian battalions and the tanks
reached the
top of the ridge and drove the enemy back. The 4th Division had reached
its
first objective with the capture of Dury. During the night, the enemy
pulled
back, and on September 3, the Canadian Corps met no resistance when it
advanced
about six kilometres to take up positions facing the next obstacle, the
Canal-du-Nord.
In the first four days
of September, the Canadian Corps captured more than 6,000 unwounded
prisoners
and inflicted heavy losses on the German Army. Its own casualties
amounted to
5,600 men in this short period.
The Successes: 1st
Division (Major-General Macdonell)
When he spoke of the
successes of the Army Corps, General Currie praised the 1st Canadian
Division
in particular for attacking and capturing the Fresnes-Rouvroy and
Drocourt-Quéant Lines, which amounted to a penetration of almost ten
kilometres.
The Ambushes: 2nd
Division (Major-General Burstall)
During the operations
on the first two days, the 2nd Division experienced some difficulty in
the
operations prior to capturing the two enemy lines. The objective of
breaking
through the Fresnes-Rouvroy enemy defence system was unsuccessful at

the 2nd Division had difficulty breaking through these lines near
Boiry-Notre-Dame, thus leaving the objective only partially achieved

killed on the morning of the 4th inst. while very gallantly leading his
men in

afraid
there is absolutely no hope of his being a prisoner.
During the attack, and they had to advance a

the men say, that is those who were with him who are left, that he was
killed

everyone was moving and although a thorough search was made your son's
body was
not discovered. It would be very hard
for for you to realize what the ground is like up there, it is churned

pitted with shell holes. Your son
behaved in a most gallant manner, he has always done so.
He was very popular with all, and
respected. He and I were great friends,
and used to have a stroll together most days.
Of late I have never seen him in better form, and he went up the

great spirits. Up there the men tell me

Henry ALLEN:
William
Henry Allen was
baptized "the son of William and Bessie Allen of Latimerstown..." but
his mother died within days of his birth. It is not known who raised
William.
His paternal grandmother was dead and his father didn't remarry for
another
five years. After his chaotic childhood, perhaps he grew up a difficult
man.
His only son would later claim to hate him, for what reasons we may
never know.
During a
1998 visit to
Latimerstown, which has been owned by the widow Eleanor Doyle since
1947,
papers in her possession confirmed that William Henry Allen was the
registered
owner in fee simple under the Land Purchase Acts in 1901. I believe
this man to
be the cousin identified by the initials "W.H." in letters belonging
to my husband's great-grandfather, Benjamin W. Allen. These letters
survived a
journey from
W.H. and
Ben were
exchanging letters because they shared an interest in the family
history, but
perhaps this interest did extend to Latimerstown itself. It was the
late
Mr.Doyle who tried to trace Latimerstown's early history, with little
success.
Most title deeds, prior to 1963, were destroyed in the Four Courts fire
in the
Civil War. Hore apparently had a reference to Latemmerston dated 1571,
but what
Mr. Doyle found out was that a Colonel Camby took a lease on the
property for
five years in 1653, although there was no habitable dwelling then.
Camby was
still there in 1660, but Jacob Rathdowney may acquired Latimerstown
later.
Prior to William H. Allen's ownership, the property had been rented
from the
Johnstown Castle Estate under Lease for lives from Sir Thomas and Lady
Esmond
to William Allen (probably W.H.'s father).
The Doyles
also have a
few papers relating to an adjacent property known as Little
Latimerstown or Starvehall,
which also provide some clues to the Allen family history. In addition,
the
corresondence between W. H. & Ben refers to John Allen's deed to
Latimerstown in the 1730s.
As to
William Henry
Allen, the last owner of a property which had been in his family for
350 years,
he sold Latimerstown to the Walkers in 1903. The Walkers sold
Latimerstown to
the Fitzherberts in 1947 and the current owners, the Doyles, purchased
the
property in 1959.
In 1909,
William Henry
Allen was still l iving in

Notes for
William
"Alfred" ALLEN:
Alfred is
the only
known son of William H. Allen, a man he claimed to hate. He was
christened
"William Alfred son of William and Maude Beatrice Allen of
Latimerstown." He later lived at
Westgate as his older son's baptismal register indicates that he was
the son of
"William and Martha Allen of Westgate."
At some
point Alfred
must have emigrated to Surrey, England where his grandson Richard
remembers
meeting him for the first time and being shown all the crested Allen
family
silverware, heirlooms which were later sold by his Uncle Wally.

According to his son,
Bill was a charming man, who looked something like David Niven, but he
was also
a small-time crook and con man, in and out of jail. He never worked a

his life. He left home when his children were small, maintaining very
little
