CLUB HISTORY

In October of 1958, a new charter was granted by Lions International to the Village of Lyons with 27 dedicated men to act in unison in contributing to the betterment of our community. Charter night came on the 10th of Jan. 1959 with 242 people in attendance at the School Auditorium. The chronological course and efforts have lent numerous events and projects into our community by contributions such as:

Morenci Area Hospital, conducted a public auction, lighted baseball field, individual medals given to bank members, sponsored a bank concert, Boy Scouts, eye glasses for students, toys for boys and girls at Christmas, food baskets for needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas time, Memorial Day parades and a shelter house in Green Mem. Park.

In 1962 we were introduced to the Community Birthday Calendar which has been good and we were invited to work at the fair gate, food stands at auction sales, sponsored boys to Boys State and numbered the houses in the village.

In 1963 we had our "First" at a public service taking care of Heart Sunday and having a Zone Chairman in our Club 1963-64. We bought slide, merry-go-round, grills, picnic tables and swings; we have sold brooms, light bulbs, Halloween candy and conducted a Candy Day. For the next two terms 1964-65 – 1965-66 we had a Zone Chairman at which time our club enjoyed more conventions and became more involved in the Ohio Lions projects, Ohio Eye Research, Pilot Dogs and CARE. Raffles became more frequent.

In 1966 a motion by Bob Kime and a club second gave us the opportunity to campaign for a Senior Governor and our club really started to work harder and a year later.(67-68) found us with a District Governor – Leonard Yost and a cabinet-Secy. Earl Mack. It was at this time that the opportunity came to Charles & Dorthy Mowry to chaperone a group of boys and girls to Europe. We sponsored a youth that year to the Youth Exchange Program. Our club again scored in Lionistic Service in the person of Earl Mack as Zone Chairman 1969-70.

The following year, June 6, 1971, we held a Park Dedication and raffled a Tin Lizzie to help pay for the Shelter House that we erected. This brought people to our Village in great numbers to watch the parade: Evergreen Band, Golden Vikings, Cub Scouts and we were also honored by the presence of Governor Miles, Rep. Delbert Latta and State Rep. Fred Hadley. A very successful venture by all the Lyons Lions.
