OBITUARY:
MYERS-FLEMING, Helen
December 6, 2003

Former Lyons council member was active in Fulton County GOP

LYONS, Ohio - Helen Fleming Myers, a former member of Lyons City Council who was active in the Fulton County Republican Party, died at Flower Hospital in Sylvania Saturday. She was 90.

Family said she died from complications from a fall.

Mrs. Myers was described as a kind person who believed in giving back to her community. She was active up to 11/2 years ago, taking on leadership roles in various organizations and keeping them alive with her support.

"She was making calls, sending press releases to newspapers about meetings," her son, Ross Fleming, said. "She knew if she didn't take a leadership role, those organizations would probably die. She didn't mind being a member and never looked for recognition, but if she needed to take a leadership role, she could do that as well."

Mrs. Myers was born in Chelsea, Mich., and her parents, Claude and Gladys File, moved to Lyons when she was 2. She graduated from high school there and married Roscoe Fleming in 1933, who preceded her in death in 1979. She married the Rev. John William Myers in 1981.

Mr. Fleming worked as a custodian at Lyons Elementary for 30 years. Mrs. Myers worked there as a custodian too, for about 25 years.

"She was a magnet for little children," said Rosalee Heyman, Mrs. Myers' daughter. "She had such a gentle spirit."

Ross Fleming said his parents would work at school during the day and then return for basketball games and school functions at night, even though they were not required to.

Mr. Fleming said they wanted to support the activities of the community and developed a strong bond with the students, faculty, and parents of the school.

"My mother believed that if you're going to receive things from the community, then you need to participate in it and give back," Mr. Fleming said.

She won election to Lyons city council after the death of Mr. Fleming, who was a councilman. She helped the county's Republican Party as well, family members said, even though she didn't consider herself a politician.

She was active in the State Employees Retirement Society, Volunteer Fireman's Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, Lyons Literary League, and the Lyons Historical Society.

Mrs. Myers is survived by her husband, the Rev. John William Myers; son, Ross Fleming; daughter, Rosalee Heyman; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Mrs. Myers will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow at First Universalist Church of Lyons, where an Eastern Star service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A funeral and memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements were made by Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora.

The family suggests tributes to the First Universalist Church of Lyons of the Lyons Historical Society.
