William Joseph Vautier
(1840-1913)

William Joseph Vautier was born 27 March 1840 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the second-eldest son of Peter Vautier and Sarah Young Vautier, and was one of five children born to them. The others born to them were Clara, Mary Ann, Charles Henry, and John Dominick. His father, Peter, was the son of French immigrants, Dominque and Maria Louisa (de Laittre) Vautier, and his mother, Sarah, was the daughter of one Jacob Young.

William fought in the Civil War. He enlisted with the 29th Pennsylvania Volunteer, company E on 20 August 1862 as a private. He was injured with a gunshot wound to his left arm while serving in Tennessee with his unit and was honorably discharged on 03 June 1865. After the war, William held a number of jobs, including butter and egg dealer, janitor, and gardener.

He married Catherine E. Miller on a Thursday evening, 07 September 1871 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Trinity, located in Philadelphia. The priest who married them was one S.A.K. Francis. Catherine was presumably the eldest daughter of Jacob Miller and Helen Maurice (or Morris) DeForest Sheetze. She was born 07 September 1851 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The couple would have eleven children; Helen M., Sarah Miller, William J., Miriam Crosby, Ellerslie W., Julia Ann, Daniel M., Ann Grubb, Laura Elizabeth, and James Wilson.

William died 18 February 1913 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of apoplexy. He was buried on 20 February 1913 in North Cedar Hill Cemetery, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Catherine would survive him by nearly six years, dying on 04 February 1919 of a stomach cancer. She too would be buried in North Cedar Hill cemetery.
