COLLINS-WELLS
CEMETERY
This cemetery is located on a point overlooking State Route #3 at Daniels Creek. The
approach road to the cemetery exits off from the North side of St. Rt. 3. The
cemeteries can be accessed about 200 feet East of the 3 mile marker. These two
cemeteries are open from 8am-8pm. The roadway to both cemeteries winds up around the
hill and is pretty steep. Directions Per: Ron Branham Aug 2003

As you can see, I have nothing on the babies of Walker & Mary Wells. My mother remembers my grandmother saying that
they were buried after her baby, Wm. Lucien Wells (which was 30-AUG-1922) and were buried at the foot of his grave.
She also remembers that they were buried before Kelly & Sophia's last baby (which was 28 MAY 1925) and who are buried
at the foot of their graves. So that should narrow the field. These children were born/died between these two dates,
if my mother's memory is accurate. Submitted By:Kim Howard Sep.07 2006.
Collins-Wells Listings Submitted by: Kim Howard
This is an old cemetery that has many handmade, sandstone markers with initials only. But some of the markers are
unreadable.
I counted 97 markers with unreadable or no discernable markings.

These are the markers with initials only but the interred is known:

These are the ones with initials or initials and dates only. In some cases only partial initials are still visible.
I have put them down as I found them, from the entrance of the cemetery to the back. Kim.

COLLINS-WELLS CEMETERY DATA AND INFO
I am Matthew Offutt Paige, Jr., born in Harlan County, retired U.S. Navy Officer and I currently live and work in
Seoul, Korea. Several of my ancestors are buried in the subject cemetery. Hopefully, I can provide you with some
minor corrections and additional information.
1. In the newly added section researched by Kim Howard is an entry for E.O.P. with blank dates. That should be the
burial site of Eckel Otie Page, March 16, 1917 to June 16, 1917. Date of burial June 17, 1917. "Little" Eckel, born
and died in Johnson County, was the son of Eckel Otie Page and Virginia Agnes Austin Page (my paternal grandparents)
of Offutt, Ky. "Little" Eckel's maternal grandparents were Isom Austin and Martha Jane Wells Austin (both buried there)
and his maternal great- grandparents were James W. Wells and Emeritta Collins Wells (also both buried there).
Beside or near "Little" Eckel's buriel site should be one for his sister Opal Page, June 4, 1913 to September 7, 1913
and buried September 8, 1913. So sad that my aunt and uncle died at such early ages. The very least I can do is try
to honor their memory and identify their burial locations.
2. The entry for my great-aunt Martha Austin Fields contains an incorrect note. She was the daughter of Isom Austin
and Martha Jane Wells Austin. The note incorrectly identifies Mary (Margaret aka Peggy) Baldwin Austin (one of my
maternal great-great grandmothers) as her mother. Margaret was her grandmother and the mother of Isom.
Margaret's husband was John Jordan Austin. I am interested in learning the source of the mis-information in the note.
Because she died before my grandmother Page was born or was still an infant, I have never been able to develope a date
of death, location or burial site for Margaret. Knowing that source might be an aid in finding that information.
Because of the above I am lead to believe that possibly she is buried there.
In case you noticed the spelling difference in my last name (Paige) and my grandfather (Page) - he changed it by
adding the "i" (probably around the time that he registered in the social security plan in the 1930s.) Also, the
spelling of Eckel changed at some point to Eckle.
It has been almost fifty years since I was last in Johnson County and seeing the photographs on your cemetery site
brings back so many memories and makes me want to travel back there. Please keep up the great work - I wish I were
there to help.
I hope that the above has been of some interest and assistance. And if you have any questions or additional
information for me please contact me at any time.
