1935-1984

Jack Nelson, 49, of Abbott Road, died Friday, June 1, as a result
of a bulldozer accident on the left fork of Abbott Creek. A heavy
equipment operator for Floyd County, He was one of 18 workers
recalled by the fiscal court only last week after a 12 month
layoff.

The victim is said to have been adjusting the blade on the
bulldozer in the course of clearing a landslide when the machine
began to roll toward him. He jumped onto the bulldozer in an effort
to stop it but was drawn under one of its tracks, according to
report.

Nelson was born March 8,1935, a son of the late Hiland Nelson and
Martha Osborne Nelson, of Prestonsburg. Hi first wife, Annis
Gertrude Craft Nelson, died June 1, 1974: he later married Edna
Carol Hackworth Prater Nelson.

He was a member of the Town Branch Enterprise Baptist Church and a
veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving besides his wife, are four sons Jack Nelson Jr., Robie
Gene Prater Jr., Gary Prater, and Gregory Prater; four daughters,
Sheryl Lynn Adams, Cathy Marie Nelson, Sandra Kay Nelson, and
Debbie Prater Nelson; eight brothers, Sam, Will, Ted, Hargiss,
Arvel, Grady, Don and Ed; a sister, Mary Ellen Powers; and five
grandchildren . All live in Prestonsburg.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Town Branch
Enterprise Baptist Church, with Elder Bill Campbell and the Rev.
Bob Martin officiating.

Burial was in the Osborne cemetery at Hagar Hill, where graveside
military honors were given by the Andy J. Blanton Chapter 18,
Disabled American Veterans.

Pallbearers were Don, Frank, Grady Edward and James Nelson; Bill,
Kieth and Vernon Powers; ( Red ) Bill Crace; and Buddy Collins.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Carter Funeral Home.
