WEISSINGER FAMILY HISTORY

  • Family Tree (Leonardt>George Sr.>Alexander Jackson>George Jackson>Arthur Jackson)

  • The following is based on extensive research by my father Arthur Bingham Weissinger (1905-1979), relying on oral history and field research primarily in Mississippi and Alabama. It relates to that branch of the Weissinger family in my direct line of descent.

John, George and Leonhardt Weissinger, three of eight children of a family from Kircheim, Wurtemberg, Germany, arrived in Charleston SC in 1780's. (Family history says 1789, but there is a marriage record for John in South Carolina dated 1786 and a record of an immigrant listed as John Weisinger arriving in Charleston in 1784. Yet another account says four brothers began the trip but one died en route.) All were born in Germany, John in 1758, George in 1769, and Leonhardt on an unknown date. John married Magdalen Gutjahren and had a son Leonard. John Weissinger died in 1809 and is buried in Charleston.

The only information I have on Leonhardt is that he had three sons and two daughters.

I am descended from George Weissinger (1769-1837) who married Winifred Anderson and moved first to Augusta GA and later to central Alabama. He had eight children, in order Sallie, Eliza, Leonard Anderson, John Wesley (who died in Brazil in 1870), George Washington, James Madison, Alexander Jackson (my great-great grandfather) and Emily. George Weissinger was a planter who settled and named the village of Hamburg, just south of Marion AL, northwest of Selma. He was elected several times to the Alabama state legislature. There is a link below to an excellent account of George and Winifred's life together.

Alexander Jackson Weissinger married Cordelia Strong and had ten children--George Jackson (my great grandfather), James Madison, William Strong, Julia Cordelia, Caroline Winifred, Alexander Lidell, Ransom McElroy, John Robert, Leonard Anderson, and Blanche. At least seven of these children survived to the 20th Century.

George Jackson Weissinger (1842-1927) married Sallie Kent (who is responsible for my name), and they had six children, Robert Lee, Cordelia B., Arthur Jackson (my grandfather), Blanche Ethel, John Leonard and Willie Lou.

Arthur Jackson Weissinger (1878-1957) married Annie Mae Bingham in Ruleville MS and had five children, Arthur Bingham (my father), Ellie Vivian, who died in infancy, Annie Lillian (only survivor as of this date), Robert Jackson and Edwin Bradford. The family moved to Winter Park FL in 1919 for reasons of Annie's health. About half of this branch of the family remains in various parts of Florida. Most of Arthur Jackson Weissinger's relatives were in Mississippi at the turn of the last century.

There is some very good information about the George and Winifred Weissinger branch of the family, and some helpful but less complete information on other branches, at the "HUGE storehouse" link below. I also have some additional names and birth and death dates of spouses and children not listed above. Anyone with questions, new information or corrections is welcome to contact me at the e-mail address at the bottom of this page.
