THE FAMILY OF TONY ALBERNADUS BRETHOUWER & ARNOLDA JOHANNA JENTINK

Tony Albernadus Brethouwer & Arnolda Johannh JentinkTony Albernadus Brethouwer & Arnolda Johanna Jentink were married on August 21, 1833 in Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands. Their marriage record lists their names as "Tonnij Aalbernardus Brethouwer, te Aalten, 25 jaar, soldaat (born in Aalten, 25 years old, soldier) , son of Adrianus Brethouwer & Helena Catharina Wanders, and Arnolda Johanna Jentink, 29 jaar (years), daughter of Evert Jentink & Enneken.Blekkink. At the time of their marriage, Arnolda Johannah had a 2 year old son named Adrianus Jan that Tony acknowleged as being his child, and they had 5 more children after the marriage. The family emigrated from The Netherlands (Holland) to the USA in 1847, along with Johanna's father & stepmother, Evert & Harmina (Damkot) Jentink, and the family of Tony's half-brother Adrianus Brethouwer Jr. Family story states that Arnolda Johanna Jentink Brethouwer died enroute to the USA, and that she was buried at sea, but she is listed with the family on the passenger list of the ship Kath Jackson when it arrived in New York on September 28, 1847. She is not listed with the family on the 1850 census, so she died sometime betweeen 1847-1850. On immigration records in the Netherlands, both Tony & Adrianus Jr had listed their intended destination as Indiana, but both families settled in Wisconsin. Tony is listed with the children on the 1850 census of Holland, Sheboygan Co., WI. Tony had a son named Herman John born on October 14, 1852 to mother Anna M., but I don't know if they were married. I believe Herman's mother was Johanna "Anna" Maria Kolwagen TeBrinke, widow of Derk Jan TeBrinke as Derk & Anna's youngest daughter Diena is listed at age 11 with Tony and Herman on the 1860 census. Anna is not listed with Tony or Herman John on any later census records, so she probably died between Herman's birth in 1852 to 1860. Tony is listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Holland, Sheboygan Co., WI. In 1880 Tony is listed as "Father" in Herman's household. The last name on American census records has been spelled many ways, ie Brethouwer, Brethower, Brethour, etc. Tony Albernadus Brethouwer died on January 19, 1882 in Oostburg, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin.

Adrianus Jan BrethouwerAdrianus Jan Brethouwer was born on February 2, 1831 in Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands. When Arnolda Johannah married Tony Brethouwer on August 21, 1833 Adrianus was already age 2. At the time of the marriage, Tony legitimized or acknowledged Adrianus as being his own. He is listed as Adrianus, age 16, with his parents on the passenger list of the ship Kath Jackson, that arrived in New York on September 28, 1847. Family story states that his mother died on the ship before they arrived, although she is also listed on the New York passenger list. She is not listed with the family on the 1850 census, so she died sometime between 1847-1850. Tony settled with the children in Wisconsin, and John, age 20, is listed with his father & siblings on the 1850 census of Holland, Sheboygan Co., WI. Adrianus married Janna Seggers about 1850, and they had at least 2 children. (Janna is probably the Hanna Sygis, age 26, who is listed in Tony Brethouwer's household in 1850.) Adrianaus & Janna are listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Holland, Sheboygan Co., WI under the name Adrian Brethouwer, and living near Adrianus' father Tony. Janna died October 27, 1886 in Sheboygan Co., WI. Adrianus Jan Brethouwer died on March 20, 1895 in Holland, Sheboygan Co, WI. Evert married Helena Van De Wege on July 12, 1858 in Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin, and they had 12 children. They are listed under the name Evart Brethouwer on the 1870 census of Holland, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin. They emigrated from Wisconsin to Nebraska sometime between 1872-1876, and they are listed on the 1880, 1885 & 1900 censuses of South Pass (Firth), Lancaster Co., Nebraska. According to a family history, "Dr. Brethhouwer was a country doctor; both he and his wife were born in the Netherlands. In Wisconsin, the Brethouwers lived on a small farm or acreage which contained maple trees. They would tap the trees to collect buckets of maple syrup to use on the table and make candy. According to Aunt Minnie and Aunt Lena, it was the 'only kind of candy they had'. The Brethouwers later settled in Holland, Nebraska. Dr. Brethouwer had an office in his home. He pulled teeth, delivered babies, had different kinds of pills for any ailment one might have. As Aunt Jennie once remarked, "I guess he knew how to care for himself... he lived to be 93 years old." Helena Van De Wege Brethouwer died in 1902 in Holland, Lancaster Co., NE. After Helena's death, Evert married Caroline about 1903, probably in Lancaster Co., NE. It was the second marriage for Evert and third for Caroline. They are listed on the 1910 census of Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE, both listed as age 78, married 7 years, and Caroline listed as having 2 births with 1 surviving child. Caroline probably died before 1920. Evert is listed as age 87 & widowed on the 1920 census of South Pass, Lancaster Co., NE, living near his widowed daughter Esther Poort. Evert Jan Brethouwer died on May 18, 1923 in Holland, Lancaster Co., NE.

Child of Tony Albernadus Brethouwer & Anna M. (probably Johanna "Anna" Maria Kolwagen TeBrinke)

Herman John BrethouwerHerman John Brethouwer was born on October 14, 1852 in Holland, Sheboygan Co., Wisconsin.
