Dean Surname Y-DNA Project – results

Welcome to those researching the DEAN surname.  The purpose of this project is to facilitate placing orders for Y-DNA test kits to be used by males surnamed Dean and to coordinate the results from those tests.  Using these results may enable us to reinforce or disprove theories regarding our male DEAN ancestors.  We also hope to build a Y-DNA database which will enable us to identify various DEAN ancestral lines.  At present  we have 161 subjects in the surname project:  45 with no matches and 23 groups with two or more matches.  This makes 68 distinctly different genetic lines with the surname Dean or a variation of Dean - amazing!

If you have some knowledge of genealogy and want to learn about using DNA testing in genealogical research you might want to look at the book Trace Your Roots with DNA by Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak and Ann Turner.  This was by far the best book on the subject when it was  published in 2004  but it is somewhat out of date today in this fast-moving subject area.  It's still a good resource on  Y and mitochrondrial tests but it barely mentions autosomal testing which is receiving a lot of attention by genealogists today.  There is a newer book, Genetic Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond by Emily D. Aulicino, published in December 2013.  It might be a better source of information for a beginner today.  A more-recently published book, The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy by Blaine T. Bettinger is a good reference book for those who have done DNA testing.

Recently the internet resource Geni hosted a four-part series: "DNA Testing for Genealogy -- Getting Started" written by CeCe Moore.  She writes a blog: YourGeneticGenealogist.com.  I thought they were really good articles - not too technical for most people interested in genealogy.  And they contained what I thought was good advice for people thinking about doing DNA testing.  Click here for the first part in the series.  There is a link to the next part at the end of each article.

If you are interested in ordering a Y-DNA test kit to be used by a male surnamed DEAN, go to the Family Tree DNA order form where you can order a Y-DNA test kit.  If ordered through a surname project, Y-DNA test kits cost $59 for a 12-marker test, $109 for a 25-marker test, $169 for a 37-marker test, $248 for a 67-marker test and $339 for a 111-marker test plus a small shipping fee.  Select the test you want to order and follow the instructions from there.  As a default, I would recommend a 37-marker YDNA test, but there are circumstances that would justify fewer or more markers.  If you have any questions about ordering or using the test kit, please contact me at the e-mail address below BEFORE you place your order.  I will get back to you as soon as possible.

 Conclusions as of February 2018 (Nov 2018):

 E haplogroup

 Group E-01 (Subjects 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, 1H, 3C, 3Q, 4F, 5C 5Q 6J and 7C).  Conventional genealogical research has confirmed that nine of these subjects (except subjects 4F, 5Q and 7C) have Richard Deane (1701-1788) as a common ancestor.  The connection of subject 4F to this group has yet to be confirmed by conventional genealogical research.  Given subject 5Q's 65/67 match with the modal values of this group and the fact that his pedigree is in England, it appears that they share a common ancestor who lived in England before the mid 1700's.  Subject 7C's 35/37 match with the modal values of this group indicates a common ancestor, but the earliest of this line is thought to be in Ireland which raises some interesting questions.  See Richard Deane (1701-1788) and His Children for more information on the family of Richard Deane.  See William Dean (abt 1735-1825) of Kentucky for information on the relationship between Richard Deane and Thomas Dean, earliest known ancestor of subject 1E.  See Descendants of John and Ann Dean of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania for information on the ancestors of subjects 1C and 1H.

Group E-02 (Subjects 4T, 4Y and 7A).  FTDNA has predicted that these subjects belong to the E1b haplogroup (now called E-M35).  The pedigree information on subjects 4T and 7A identify common ancestors.  Based on subject 4Y's matches with 4T and 7A, he shares a recent common ancestor with them but that ancestor appears to be before the known conventional genealogy of subject 4Y.

Group E-03 (Subjects 3Y and 5Z).  FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects belong to the E1b haplogroup.  Based on the 36/37 match between the two subjects, they share a recent common ancestor.

Subject 6O.  FTDNA has predicted that this subject belongs to the E-M96 haplogroup.  This subject does not share a recent common ancestor with anyone in the Dean surname project.

I haplogroup
Group I-01 (Subjects 1A, 1G and 1L). FTDNA has determined by SNP test that subject 1A belongs to haplogroup I2b1 and they have predicted that subjects 1G and 1L belong to the same haplogroup.  Based on their 24/25 and 25/25 matches with each other they share a recent common ancestor, William Dean b. 1750-60 which confirms suspected conventional genealogy that George W. Dean and Caleb Dean were brothers.  See The Family of George W. Dean (1786-1856) for more information on the family of George W. Group I-02 (Subjects  1J, 2K, 2T, 3Z and 5E).  FTDNA has predicted that these five subjects probably belong to the I1 haplogroup.  Subject 2T has tested on 37 markers while subjects 1J. 2K and 3Z have tested on 67 markers.  The only deviation from the modal values in these four tests is the 30 at DYS459 for 1J and 3Z.  Based on their pedigree charts the common ancestor of all four would be Benjamin Deen, b. 1762.  The mutation on DYS459 indicates that the pairs 1J-3Z and 2K-2T share an even more recent common ancestor.  Subject 5E is a special case as he does not have the Dean surname and his YDNA does not match anyone in the Howard surname project.  But he  does match the modal values in the group 65/67 which indicates a common ancestor within the genealogical time frame.  His connection to anyone in this group is unknown to the researchers in this group.

Group I-03 (Subjects  1T, 2E, 2F, 5F, 6C, 6D and 6G).  FTDNA has predicted that these seven subjects probably belong to the I1 haplogroup.  Based on their 34/37 match with each other, subjects 1T and 2E share a recent common ancestor which is the earliest ancestor identified in the two pedigree charts.  Based on their 35/37 match with each other, subjects 2E and 2F share a recent common ancestor which appears to be John Deen, b. abt. 1779 despite the change in surname in the next generation.  The YDNA test of subject 6G verifies that he shares a recent common ancestor with subject 2F.  Based on subjects 5F and 6D matching subjects 1T and 2E on at least 35/37 markers, they probably share a recent common ancestor with them, but conventional genealogy has not revealed who that common ancestor is.  Although subject 6C has tested on only 12 markers, he does match the others in this group 12/12 and probably shares a recent common ancestor with them.

Group I-04 (Subjects 2A, 2Q, 3D and 6M).  FTDNA has predicted that these four subjects probably belong to the I1 haplogroup (now called I-M253).  Based on the 37/37 match of subjects 2A, 2Q and 6M and their 36/37 match with 3D, they probably share a recent common ancestor.  The pedigree information indicates that Shadrick J. Deen is probably the common earliest ancestor of all four tests.

Group I-05 (Subjects 2R, 4E and 7E).   FTDNA has predicted that these three subjects probably belong to the I2b1 haplogroup (now called I-M223).  Based on the 37/37 and 33/37 matchs between them, they probably share a recent common ancestor.  Conventional genealogical research has now identified their common ancestor.

Group I-06 (Subjects 3J, 6S and 6T).  FTDNA has predicted that these three subjects probably belong to the I2b1 haplogroup (now designated I-M223).  The tests of 3J and 6S confirm the conventional genealogy of these two subjects.  Subject 6T meets the FTDNA criteria for a match but the common ancestor is not withing the known pedigrees.

 Group I-07 (Subjects 6W and 7F).  FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the I2b1 haplogroup (now designated I-M223).  The two tests confirm that they are father and son.

Subjects 1X and 4W.   FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the I2b1 haplogroup (now called I-M223).  Based on their mismatches with each other and with every subject in the surname project, they do not share a recent common ancestor with each other or with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

 Subjects 1V, 1W and 5A.  FTDNA has predicted that subjects 1V and 5A probably belong to the J2 haplogroup.  FTDNA has determined by SNP tests that subject 1W is in the J2 haplogroup.  Based on their mismatches with each other and with every other subject in the surname project, none of them shares a recent common ancestor with the others in the haplogroup or with any of the other subjects in the surname project.
R haplogroup
Group R-01 (Subjects 1U, 3L, 3P, 3T, 3U, 5U and 6P).  FTDNA has predicted that these seven subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup (now designated R-M269).  Based on their 34/37 or better matches with each other, they share a recent common ancestor.  Based on conventional genealogy, their earliest known ancestors were the well-known brothers, John and Walter Dean, of Taunton, MA.  Some descendants of that John Dean are online at the Dean-Abbot Family on RootsWeb WorldConnect.

Group R-02 (Subjects 1I, 2M, 2U, 2Y, 3E, 4D, 4G, 5I, 5N, 5T, 6E 6L and 6R).  FTDNA has determined by SNP test that subjects 2M, 2U, 3E and 5I belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup and has predicted that subjects 1I, 2Y, 4D 4G, 5N, 5T, 6E and 6L probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  Subjects 2U and 4D match 37/37.  A recent common ancestor was suspected and the YDNA tests confirmed that.  Subject 4G matches them 34/37 and, based on a shared mutation and their ancestry in England, probably shares a recent, but unidentified, common ancestor with them.  Based on their pedigree information, subjects 1I, 5T and 6E are descended from John Dean who emigrated from New Jersey to Canada.  The 33/37 match between subjects 1I and 5T does meet FTDNA's criteria for a match, but their four mismatches are more than one might expect for a common ancestor only four or five generations back.  Although the remaining seven subjects in this group meet FTDNA's criteria for reporting matches, it does not appear that they share a common ancestor that can be identified.  There is an excellent genealogy of the family of subjects 1I, 5T and 6E online at The Dean family of Gainsborough Township, Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada.  For a compilation of what is known of the family of subject 2M, see A Second Dean Line.

Group R-03 (Subjects 1K, 1M, 2L, 2N, 2P, 2S, 2Z, 3A, 3F, 3O, 3S, 3X, 4A, 4P, 4S, 4U, 4X 4Z and 5H).  FTDNA determined by SNP test that subject 3A belongs to the R1b1a2 haplogroup, and FTDNA has predicted that the other eighteen subjects probably belong to the R1b1b2 haplogroup.  Based on the small number of mismatches of any of these subjects from the modal values for their group, all eighteen of the subjects in this group probably share a recent common ancestor, but only a few of the subjects have identified a common ancestor based on conventional genealogy.  Subjects 1K, 1M, 2N, 3O, 3S and 4P share a mutation on marker DYS 444; and subjects 1K, 1M, 2N, 3S and 4P share a mutation on the very unusual 3-step mutation on DYS 617.  In each case the shared mutations indicate a closer relationship between those subjects than between them and the other subjects in the group.  In my opinion, the 3-step mutations observed on different markers in the YDNA of subjects 1K, 1M, 2N, 3A, 3S and 4P should be treated as a single mutation for the purpose of determining genetic distance.  The Dean genealogy of subject 2L is online at Dean/ Deen/ Deens, Bryan, Mills and others on RootsWeb WorldConnect.

Group R-04 (Subjects 2H and 2J).  FTDNA has determined by SNP test that both these subject belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  Based on the 36/37 match between them, they probably share a recent common ancestor, but that ancestor appears to be before the conventional genealogy known to either subject.

Group R-05 (Subjects 1Y, 1Z, 2C, 2G, 2I, 3B, 3M, 4L, 5B 6B and 6F).  FTDNA has predicted that these eleven subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  The 37/37 matches among subjects 1Y, 2C, 2I, 3M, 5B and 6B indicate a very recent common ancestor for the six of them.  Conventional genealogy indicates their ancestry probably converges in the Edgefield District, SC.  The 36/37 match between the six of them and subjects 3B and 6F and the 35/37 match between the six of them and subject 1Z indicate mutations which occurred after subject 3B's and subject 1Z's line branched off.  The 34/37 match between the six of them and subject 2G indicates the common ancestor between the six of them and subject 2G probably occurs further back in time.  Conventional genealogy indicates this may have been in colonial Virginia.  Eight subjects have now tested on 67 markers.  Four subjects match 67/67, three have one mismatch on different markers and one has two mismatches on markers different from the others who have tested on 67 markers.  These results continue to indicate a very recent common ancestor among the eight of them.

Group R-06 (Subjects 2X and 4B).  FTDNA determined by SNP test that subject 2X belongs to the R1b1a2 haplogroup, and FTDNA has predicted that subject 4B probably belongs to the R1b1b2 haplogroup.  The 37/37 match between them strongly indicates a recent common ancestor, but their conventional genealogy apparently does not extend back far enough to reveal the common ancestor.

Group R-07 (Subjects 3K and 4C).  FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  The 37/37 match between them strongly indicates a recent common ancestor who may be the Charles Dean at the head of the two pedigree charts.

Group R-08 (Subjects 4J and 4K).  FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  The 35/37 match between them indicates a recent common ancestor which verifies the family's conventional genealogy.

Group R-09 (Subjects 1N and 4O).  FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  Their 24/25 match confirms that they share a recent common ancestor, as indicated by their submitted pedigrees.  Both subjects are descended from the well-researched Deans of Dorchester of colonial Maryland.   There is a Deans of Dorchester web site online.

Group R-10 (Subjects 3H, 4V and 6Q).  FTDNA has predicted that these three subjects belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup (now designated R-M269).  Subjects 3H and 6Q match 25/25 and are known to be brothers.  Subject 4V has several mismatches in 37 markers but probably shares a common ancestor within the genealogical time frame.

Group R-11 (Subjects 1F and 5G).  FTDNA has predicted that these two subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  Based on their 37/37 match with each other, they share a common ancestor which the pedigree charts indicate is the William Dean/Deen who died in 1830 in Perry Co., IN.

Group R-12 (Subjects 3N, 5P, 5S, 5W and 5Y).  FTDNA has predicted that these five subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup.  At 37 markers, subjects 3P and 5Y match 37/37 and represent the modal values.  Subjects 3N and 5S are 36/37 with subject 3P and 36/37 with each other.  Subject 5W is 34/37 with the modal values and 33/37 with subjects 3N and 5S.  They all probably share a common ancestor a generation or two before the earliest ancestors known to them.  The earliest ancestor of subject 5P may be the Benjamin Dean in the 1850 census in Carroll Co., GA.  If that is true, he has left his first wife and children and remarried twice.

Group R-13 (Subjects 1R, 5V and 6Z).  FTDNA has predicted that these subjects probably belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup (now designated R-M269).  Although very closely matched by YDNA and closely matched by locality of earliest known ancestor, the common ancestor has not been identified.

Subject 1S.  FTDNA has determined by SNP test that this subject belongs to the R1a1a haplogroup.  Based on his mismatches in DNA and conventional genealogy he probably does not share a recent common ancestor with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

Subject 1Q.  FTDNA has determined by SNP test that this subject belongs to the R1b1 haplogroup.  Based on his mismatches in DNA and conventional genealogy he probably does not share a recent common ancestor with any of the other subjects in the surname project.

Subjects 1O, 1P, 2B, 2D, 2O, 2V, 2W, 3G, 3I, 3R, 3V, 3W, 4I, 4M, 4N, 4R, 5D, 5J, 5K, 5L, 5O, 5R, 5X, 6A, 6H, 6I, 6J, 6N, 6U, 6V, 6X 6Y and 7D.  FTDNA has determined by SNP test that subjects 3R, 4I and 5L belong to the R1b1a2 haplogroup and has predicted that the remaining twenty-six subjects probably belong to the R1b1 haplogroup (now called R-M269).  They probably do not share a recent common ancestor with each other or any of the other subjects in the surname project.  The Dean genealogy of subject 2B is online at "The Descendants of Richard Dean".  The ancestors of subject 4N can be found online at The David Dean Project.  The earliest 10 generations of the ancestors of subject 4R can be found by clicking on the "Winifred Dean Pedigree" at the bottom of the Banks/Dean Genealogy web page.  The ancestors of subject 5J can be found online at The Dean Family of Crockett Co., Tennessee.  The genealogy of subject 6U can be found at A History of the William Dean Family of Cornwall, CT and Canfield, OH.

Subjects 4H, 4Q 5M and 7B.  FTDNA has predicted that subjects 4H, 4Q and 7B probably belong to the T haplogroup and has determined by SNP test that subject 5M belongs to the T1 haplogroup.  Based on their mismatches with each other and others in the Dean surname project, they do not share a recent common ancestor with any subject in the surname project.  Based on autosomal tests and other information, subject 7B believes Warren Kempton Dean Sr. was not the biological father of Warren Kempton Dean Jr.
