The Wood(s) Family

Visitors:

We have been unable to find the "Wood" ancestor that came over from the old country. We do know that they were of Scottish descent. Whether they came directly from Scotland or by way of Ireland, like the majority of our Scotch-Irish relatives did, we do not know.

We have only been able to trace back as far as my great great grandfather Andrew Wood. We believe his father and mother were Green and Selah Pentecost Wood, but, there is no proof to back this claim up. The first time that I heard the name Green Wood mentioned was when my Aunt Celia (spelled Selah in the old William Boyd Bible now owned by my uncle Joseph Boyd), said he was her great grandfather, or so she thought. Since that conversation, it has been discovered her great grandfather was Andrew Wood who married Charity Langley. They lived in Forsyth County, Georgia. Later they would move into Cherokee County, Georgia.

This discovery was made in the 1830 census of Hall County, Georgia. It should be noted that at this time, part of Forsyth County was in Hall County. Andrew Wood was listed between 20-30 years of age. His wife Charity, was also listed as being between 20-30 years old. Their children were listed as; one male 5-10 (Green); one female 5-10 (Priscilla); one male 0-5 (Cassaro); and one female 0-5 (Parthenia). This same 1830 census also lists next to Andrew and Charity a Noah Langley, age 60-70. We believe this to be Charity's father.

In the 1840 census of Cherokee County, Georgia, Andrew and Charity were found along with an additional two children. They were both girls named Elizabeth and Rebecca.

Priscilla Woods Boyd It was on May 8, 1842 that my great grandfather Samuel Boyd was married to Priscilla Wood (we have a copy of the license). They were married in Forsyth County, Georgia. Sometime in the year 1844 they left Georgia and went west to Missouri. They would settle in Wright County where their home is noted in the original Platt of Hartville, Missouri. Around this time, Priscilla's sister Parthenia, had married Francis Qualls. They would move to Tennessee where their first child was born in 1846. Andrew and Charity may have went to Tennessee with Parthenia and her husband and later came to Missouri, or they could have went to Missouri with Sam and Priscilla in 1844. Andrew and Charity were listed in the 1850 census of Wright County, Missouri with Cassaro, Elizabeth and Rebecca.

Sam and Priscilla were also in the 1850 census of Wright County as were their daughter, listed as Sarah H. and being two years old, and their son (my grandfather), William R. and being 2 months old.

This author believes that when Priscilla was a teenager, she was bound out by her parents to an aged couple by the names of Mr. and Mrs Jacob M. Scudders, who lived in Forsyth County, Georgia area. I have two reasons to believe this. The first being, in the 1840 census of Forsyth County, there is listed a very old Mr. Jacob M. Scudder with his wife and another female age 15-16. This would be the right age for Priscilla at that time. My second reason for believing this is, I have a letter I obtained from the Archives of the Lumpkin County Library in Dahlonega, Georgia, from the Boyd-Gaillard Papers, written by my great grandfather Samuel to his brother Col. Wier Boyd stating;

"When you answer this, my wife requests that you give her some information, concerning the "old man Scudders", if dead, what disposition was made of his estate, if it was willed, or died intestate, if she is entitled to anything, she wants to come."

This letter was written February 16, 1867. Two years after the Civil War ended.

Jacob Scudders was the first Senator elected to the Georgia Senate from Cherokee County, Georgia in 1832. Before that time, he ran the Indian Agency in that area. He also helped in acquiring the land and money for the several school Academies in that county and other adjoining counties. This information was found in the "Pioneer History of Forsyth County Georgia", by Don Shadburn.

When the orphaned grandchildren of Charity Wood's were grown, they all married and had fairly large families. Thomas Wood was left in Arkansas by Charity. He was bound out to a family by the name of Morris. As soon as he worked out his bond, he left the Morris family and went to live with his mothers people in Oklahoma. They were all full blooded Cherokee Indians.

When the government started putting Indians on the reservation, Thomas left them and went back to Green Forest, Arkansas where he had lived as a child. There he married Lorena Ussery and they had seven children.

I still correspond with a great grandson of Thomas Wood. Mr. Edward Porter and his wife Elene of Pomona, California. They have provided me with much information on Thomas Wood and his family as well as the entire Wood(s) family.

In about the year 1900-1903 he moved himself and family to Joplin, Missouri. It was there all his children grew to adulthood and married. There is no doubt there are many descendants of this family still living in the Joplin area.

In a Joplin Globe newspaper, dated 8 June, 1932, this article appeared;
