Wurlitzer When the DeKleist family sold the North Tonawanda Barrel Organ Works to the Wurlitzer family, it married the name Wurlitzer and North Tonawanda in a relationship that lasted over 70 years. My Grandfather worked for the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company and I have many fond memories of weekend visits to the gardens and fishpond at the front of the factory. From Tonophones to band organs, to the mighty Wurlitzer theater organs, to player pianos to Jukeboxes, Wurlitzer has provided music for people throughout the world. Here is a postcard photo of the North Tonawanda, NY Rudolph Wurlitzer Company.

Little Store Back in 1967 a small, corner store opened at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Gilmore in North Tonawanda, NY. Known as the "Little Store" this was owned by a Brother-Sister Team, and was one of the last, owner-operated stores in the neighborhood. Did you ever shop at the "Little Store." By the way, the sign advertising Pop reads $1.19 a case and that's a Paul Rumbold for Mayor sign on the front of the building.

NT Musical Inst. Works The North Tonawanda Musical Instrument Works was located on Bryant St. back in the late 1800s, early 1900s, behind what is now the City Market. Next time you visit the City Market, check out the building toward the back, left corner. It is still there!

Topolski's Oliver Street in North Tonawanda may have set a record for the most number of bars/taverns/beer joints on that "main" street. Many intersections, especially in the "Avenues" had 4 such establishments - one on each corner. Of course there were also middle-of-the-block spots that drew loyal customers. Such was Topolski's, on Oliver Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. Thanks to Jim Gadzik for this great photo from the mid 1970s. Can anyone forget those great fish fries on Friday nights? Litwin's ChipAs most on the Litwin side are aware, Litwin's Grill and Litwin's Blue Room, at the corner of 6th and Oliver St. in North Tonawanda, started out as a Barber shop and saloon. Peter Litwin (Our Dziadek) was the proprietor. The stories of wives giving their husbands "two bits" for a haircut and the husband coming home with no haircut but a bit "under the weather," have circulated for years. After Peter Litwin's death, Babci Rose (Rusin) Litwin took over with help from Daughter Mary and Mary's husband Tony. Then "Jumbo" Henry Litwin was the mainstay of the family business till his death and the sale of the building. This chip, date unknown, was once presented to customers when someone purchased them a drink and their glass was still filled. It purchased 10 cents worth of drinks, so imagine the "Nickel" beer or the 10 cent "shot." When we lived at 661, three doors away, I can vividly remember the iceman coming to deliver ice for the "in bar" cooler and who could ever forget the birch beer pop "on tap" and Uncle Jumbo's Coleslaw with those Friday Fish Fries?
