Hamilton :

This family can be traced back to Scotland to the year 1658, a work completed by Penny Davidson of Bedford Quebec, in 1968, dedicated to her mother Penelope Spencer Safford and to her cousin Jack Dyer. Penny may be reached at P O Box 505 Bedford Qu, J0J 1A0. Without her having provided my grandfather Robein Macfie with a copy of this tremendous work I would have only been able to present the information beginning with Rufus Hamilton at his marriage to Martha Macfie. We are very fortunate to have been able to reproduce Penny's records of the main Hamilton, male relation back to 1658.

John Hamilton came from Scotland to Charlestown, Virginia, in 1658, he moved to Concord Mass in 1666, where he was sucumbed by a young woman named Christian who he married in 1681.

Nathaniel Hamilton was a private in Capt. Andrew Dalrymple's Co 1755: private in Capt. E Bemis' Co 1755 : Sergeant in Capt. Jabez Upham's Co 1759. Second Lieut in Capt. Ithamar Wright's Co 1775; Lieut in Capt. Barnabas Sear's Co 1776; Lieut in Capt. Jonathan King's Co. 1776; Captain in Col. Samuel Brewer's Regiment in 1777; Capt. in Col James Converse's Regt 1777.

Ezra Hamilton was a private in Capt. Jabez Upham's Co which went to the relief of Fort William Henry in 1757.

Rufus Hamilton (sr) was a volunteer in Capt Asa Danforth'S Co and took part in the battle of Saratoga

Rufus Hamilton (jr) of Montgomery Vt was a Judge in the Probate Court.

Dr. Rufus Hamilton III, was a surgeon with the Grand Army Republic in the war between the States.He was born in Mongomery Vt and studied medecine, graduating at Castleton Medical College about 1856. Returning to his native village he practiced a year with B W Fuller, MD. He then moved to Clarenceville Quebec, where he devoted himself to his profession. He decided to attend lectures at McGill University ( where James Macfie was also attending) obtaining his degree in 1861. He married Martha Macfie ( James' sister) in 1861 and the next year they moved to Sutton Quebec, where he practiced his profession until his death in 1881.

Dr Hamilton injuried himself while doing a deed of unselfish kindness in May., at Abercorn Qc while traveling on the South Eastern Railway. He was going on a call to Glen Sutton when her heard a sick child demanding a glass of water from its mother. He went for one, and either fell from the train, or was thrown by the movement of the train. He died as a result of these injuries on June 13 1881, leaving his widow, Martha and eight children.

Misfortune appears to have followed, at one time his widow's home was destroyed by fire, and her son Donald Munro Hamilton died at the age of 26.

In 1968 Penny Davidson, of Bedford Quebec, decided that in honour of her mother's birthday ( Penelope Spencer Safford) that she would invite as many members of her mother family lines as she could to a special party at her residence just outside of Bedford Que. Also for this occasion Penny decided that she would put together a family history in hounour of her mother who was in fact a descendant of many richly storied historic familes of the Eastern Townships . A copy of this wonderful volume was provided to Robin Macfie ( grandfather to the author of these web pages) and so inspired was I that I felt that the volume should be made if at all possible into a living family tree. With that in mind contact was made with Penny and the results of many years of work are now avaiable through this internet system.

Had it not been for Penny's hard work putting together the report on her family line, I would not have nor could I have even attempted to accumulated anywhere near sufficient information on the wonderful Hamilton-Macfie family to which we all belong . Had I not met with Penny , I would have simply taken Penny's work, read the stories and most probably put the volume aside on the shelf. However, her enthusisaim provoked me into thinking that a living tree might be created where all the new born family members could come and consult the history of thier family, with out beginning at the beginning searching for thier ancestors.

There are a lot of family members that do not care, have no time nor interest in where they came from or who thier relations might be , we connot chide them into forming a different opinion, but we know that they have access to all the information provided, just in case they are curious. As to the other family members those who are indeed interested in shuch things as who's Uncle was who's and so on we know that they will appreciate the information that has been made available for reviewing.

Again we must all remember that had Penny Davidson not decided to honour her mother with this wonderful gift of a written family history, we all would be much less fortunate.

Note in Concordia Alumni Assoc, 2007 news letter Audrey Bradshaw Craighead, BA 70 , MA 71 : Died October 26 in Montreal. She was a teacher, university lecturer and businees person. A native of Sutton ,Qc, Audrey graduated from MacDonald College before completing degrees in economics at Sir George. She then taught economics at Sir George and Massey Vanier and also helped run the family business, F W Jones & Sons Ltd. A talented athlete, Audrey competed on the Quebec tennis circuit and won the Quebec singles championship and was the skip for the provincial championship curling team. She was also a passionate volunteer and fundraiser. Audrey is survived by her children Bill, John and Jane, she was 83 .
