The Scott family originated in the same area as the Laing family Monymusk, Aberdeenshire Scotland. It is not known however if these two families knew one another or not however , James Laing the patriarch of the Laing family had been married to an Ann Scott of that area. We have not been able to take John Scott's line back far enough to determine if there was a relative common to Ann and John but as both families appeared to have frequented the Chapel of Garioch, we can certainly assume that a connection may have existed at one time.
Of course the two families would not know that in the next century the Laing and Scott would one again be connected by marriage but that is exactly what happened. As far as can be determine Katherine Scott was born in Scotland, while her husband to be James Adam Laing was born in Chambly Quebec. It certainly could not be foreseen that the Laing family would move from their original landing at Chambly, to the Buckingham area of Quebec which was but a short distance from the New Edinburgh town of Ontario ( now part of Ottawa).
Chapel of Garioch
Aberdeenshire
A village of the Garioch district in Aberdeenshire, Chapel of Garioch lies in a parish of the same name at a road junction 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Inverurie. The parish church dates from 1813.

BRIDGET BURNS was born 1782 in IRELAND, and died January 11, 1862 in Denhill, FYVIE. She married (1) GEORGE SCOTT.
Bridget Burn married second ALEXANDER ROUGH June 13, 1835 in INVERURIE, son of JOHN ROUGH and ISOBEL SCOTT. He was born 1779 in KINELLAR, and died 1843 in Sorryhillock, CHAPEL OF GARIOCH. (most probably a cousin to her first husband George)
Notes for BRIDGET BURNS:
Living Whitehaugh per the 1841 census for Chapel of Garioch
Living Kethney per the 1851 census for Chapel of Garioch
Living Woodside of Fetternear per the 1861 census for Chapel of Garioch
Notes for ALEXANDER ROUGH:
Crofter
The Scotts resided in New Edinburgh when they first arrived in Canada. It has been mentioned that the Scotts may have came over on the same boat as the Laings when they came to Canada. The Laings remained in Chambly, the Scotts moving to the Ottawa area however if this were true then Katherine Scott would have been born in Canada, and not in Scotland as the history of the Laing family has so often stated.

1841 Scottish census shows John as ag lab , Janet and Ann Walker 10 years old , living in the civil parish : Chapel of Garioch , address Hill of Fetternear Aberdeenshire This location is the exact place from which the Laing family emigrated to Quebec Canada around the same time
Ann Walker may have been helping her perhaps her sister who would have been with child at the time of the census.
1851 Scottish census show family living still in the civil parish of Chapel of Garioch, address Hill of Fetternear
1861 Canada Census has John Scott listed as a contractor with John , Charles and Margaret being born in Canada ( which apparently was in error as the son John was definitely recorded in the 1851 Scottish census) It also shows Alexander 20 years of age as being absent from the residence, but no indication as to where he was . Census has the family in the district of Carleton , sub district Ottawa.
John Scott does not appear on the 1871 Census so his death occurred between 1861 -1871 nor does Charles so possibly he is buried along side his father
the 1871 Census shows Jessie as head of family with children - Catherine, John and Margaret
According to the 1881 census of Canada, Jessie Scott aged 63 and her
children John (27) and Margaret (23) are living with her daughter
Katherine and her family at the Laing residence in Ottawa Canada.
The 1891 Census shows Jessie Scott 74 , living with Margaret and her new husband Donald Campbell , in Manitoba district of Lisgar
Beechwood Cemetery records show John Scott death 1902, aged 49, Margaret Scott death 1902 aged 44 and Jessie W Scott 1893 aged 75

Ann Walker (1829-1900), born in 1829 or 1830. In 1841, she was staying with her half-sister, Janet, who had married John Scott on 13 February of that year. Ann married Adam Wood on 15 December 1849. He was some ten years older than her. The banns were called in Chapel of Garioch and Monymusk. Their son was born in 1851 at Kintore, but on census day in that year they were living at Port Elphinstone, Inverurie, where Adam was a stone-dyker. Ann died on 25 July 1900 at Headiton in Insch. The couple had a son:
