their wedding day.
Right: Mary Elizabeth Harper
and William Gilmore's children, L to R: Rebecca Ann Gilmore,
James Lindsay Gilmore, Sarah Ellen Gilmore, Daniel Taylor Gilmore,
and Marinda Jane (Dell Barnes' mother).
Dell asked her grandmother why
she had married such an old man (he was 60 and she was 18), and
she said that most of the young men had been killed in the War.
William Gilmore was a 2nd Lt., Co. H., 1st Reg. Infantry, Kentucky
Volunteers, CSA, a pilot on the CSA Ram Arkansas. The
Arkansas was lost in the battle of Baton Rougue. Both
engines failed and the crew scuttled her to keep her from being
captured by the damn yankees. It was a tremendous loss to the
Confederate Navy. William died in 1891 leaving Elizabeth with
five children under the age of 10. She then remarried Louis Perriraz.
