A MYSTERY SOLVED
McNAUGHER/WILEY CONNECTION
Thanks to Mags (England) the mystery of Julie's USA William McNAUGHER and Eliza Jane WILEY has been solved. Mags saw our web site and emailed me. Julie was doing research on behalf of her brothers and I had put what information she had on the web site. I was almost sure the William was one of my McNaugher's but couldn't link him. It turns out that William was a first cousin of my great grandmother Catherine (Cassie) McNaugher. A Margaret Wiley was a witness at Cassie's marriage to John BEATTIE. Her parents were Joseph McNAUGHER and Margaret ANDERSON. It was a great day for Julie and me when we received all this new information. Mags is married to John WILEY, who was born in Derryvane, Co. Donegal. He is the son of Moses WILEY and Martha WILEY (BELL) daughter of Nathaniel BELL. Moses was the last of 13 children born to Thomas WILEY (birth date unknown, died 1907) and Isabella WILEY. Isabella was born 1853, daughter of David WILEY and died 1927. Thomas WILEY and Isabella WILEY were married at Knowhead Church, Muff Parish, Co. Donegal 5 October 1870.

Robert (born 1885) turns up in the Hotel Stratford, Vancouver, Canada, where he was working as a Labourer. He was drafted into the Canadian Army on 23 January 1918. On his service record it stated that he had an operation for a fractured spine in April 1917.

There is more information on Moses below. I will put further details of Eliza's brothers and sisters as I get it from Mags, who has just about fully researched this Wylie/Wiley family.

MORE ON WILLIAM McNAUGHER AND ELIZA JANE WILEY

William McNAUGHER was the son of James McNAUGHER and Margaret WILEY. He went to the US in 1894 aboard the "Furnessia" with sisters Isabella and Mary Jane. At Ellis Island their destination was stated as Michigan. He returned to Donegal at some point and married Eliza Jane WILEY daughter of Thomas WILEY and Isabella WILEY. William and Eliza emigrated to the US in 1908 with their daughter Margaret (Dacy or Daisy) aged two. I have two different versions of Margaret's pet name - Dacy and Daisy. Both are probably diminuatives of Margaret so I will use Dacy to simplify things. Eliza had a brother David already in America and on the ship's manifrest it states that they were visiting him. David WILEY and another sister Sarah went to the US in 1904, but he was a witness at William and Eliza's wedding in Donegal so returned to Ireland and was there at the time of the marriage. He returned to the USA.

In the photo below are William and Eliza and some of Eliza's family. Back row John (brother) Eliza, William McNaugher, Rebecca (sister). Front row Thomas (brother), Moses (brother, Thomas (father), Isabella (mother) with  Dacy, daughter of William and Eliza,  on her knee and Samuel (brother).

The family departed from the Port of Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland, sailing aboard the "Columbia" and arrived at the
Port of
New York on 7 April 1908.  The family was then processed through Ellis Island where it became known
that they were on their way to stay with Dacy's uncle David WILEY in
Caldwell, Nebraska.  Ship's Manifest -

DACEY IN A KIMONO SENT BY MARGARET WYLIE FROM JAPAN

DACY AND JACOB  (JAKE)        ZIMMERMAN  WEDDING DAY 1925

This infomation about Dacy came from Julie.

"The oldest daughter, Dacy, married Jake Zimmerman and at some point they made their way to Idaho (as my mom recalls it was to get out of the dustbowl of Kansas/Nebraska due to allergies or asthma).  They had 3 children the youngest was Gerald and he is the father of my 3 brothers.  He was a wonderful man who died tragically in a farming accident nearly 7 years ago.  My brothers and I were raised in southern California (Anaheim – home of Disneyland) and we are all basically still in the area except one of my brother’s recently moved to Philadelphia for  work. Incidentally, my youngest brother named his 3rd daughter Dacey after his grandmother."

BELL CONNECTION

Martha (see below) married Eliza Jane Wiley's youngest brother Moses. Moses farmed at Derryvane, Parish of Muff  and a great deal of our new information was given to me by Moses' son  (John's) wife. This is English Maggie or Mags (so-called because I have the dibs on Maggie) and it was about to get confusing. The new photos of the Drumhaggart area on site are courtesy of Mags and Julie.  Thanks to you both.

Moses and Martha remained in Derryvane and farmed there with Moses' brother Thomas. John WILEY (Mag's husband) was born in Derryvane ad they visit Drumhaggart two or three times a year. A Nathan WILEY was a neighbour of my Beattie and McNaugher families in Drumhaggart and leased land to them (Griffiths Valuation 1857). Possibly father of Nathaniel above.

More information will be put on site as it comes to hand. Again my grateful thanks to Mags Wiley and Julie, not only for the updated family history, but also for their bright and cheery emails and the sharing of photos of their family and news of day-to-day happenings.  For Julie's two lovely children see the photos page.
