William Bernard, of Straw Hall, Co. Carlow, 1726 - 1790, was the youngest son of Mary and Joseph Bernard.  He married his second cousin, Mary Bernard probably about 1755. Mary was the grand-daughter of Charles Bernard of Laois, William's father's brother.

In 1763, following his father (Joseph's) death William and his brother John were bequeathed Joseph's estate to be shared equally between them (1).

In 1770 in a deed from Thomas Bunbury of the City of Dublin where he released the lands of Cranavornan to William, his three children are named as lives: Thomas (eldest son), Joseph (2nd son) and Jemma (2nd eldest daughter) (2). The history of the Cranavornan lands is documented in deeds later found in a family member's attic

In Articles of Partition in 1799 John Bernard agreed to be cede his share of their father's estate to William (3) .

In 1782 the courts levied a fine of £2,000 (an enormous sum in that era) and required him to cede the lands of Ballynabooly to John Bernard and his brother-in-law, Thomas Bennett. The reason is not given. Also, in the same deed it is stated that William Bernard was the guardian of John Perkins (1).

In a Deed of Release in 1784 between Philip Bernard and William Bernard, three of William's children are named as: Thomas, Jemma and Mary (4)

It is possible that Mary Bernard, wife of William died before her husband and he re-married. In what appears to be a death notice in Feb 1789  for William Bernard, his wife is named Caroline. (9)

W&C 1789

In the Irish Church records for Co. Carlow  in 1764 there is a marriage of a William Bernard to ? Payne, a widow (no first name given).(10) If this was William's second wife the marriage occured after the birth of his youngest daughter Mary.

William and Mary Bernard's (known) children.

  •  Thomas Bernard     born about 1756-1807. In his pre-marriage agreement of 1790 he is described as William's eldest son.  (5
  • Joseph Bernard (born after 1758). No information about Joseph after 1772 so it is possible he did not survive.
  • Jemma (Jemima) Bernard probably born about 1760.

  • Mary Bernard, born about 1762. Mentioned as the youngest daughter of William in the deed of marriage settlement (6). She married William Lambert in 1788. He died before 1825 (7). They had children:
