Registry of Deeds records on line are viewable from the Family Search Library -Transcripts of memorials of deeds, conveyances and wills, 1708-1929
The Registry of Deeds is a repository of records of wills, land transactions in Ireland and other deeds from 1707 to 1929. While most of the deeds registered prior to 1800 were related to the Protestant ascendency Catholic occupiers are sometimes mentioned. Thus the Registry of Deeds is a rich source of genealogical information. Marriage settlements are particularly informative about family relationships.

The transactions are recorded in 3 separate types of ledger:

  • By date of registration and assigned number. i.e. as a memorial of a deed – records of wills, land transactions and other deeds (e.g marriage transactions) from 1709-1929. A memorial is a summary of the transaction, giving the date, the names and descriptions of all parties and all witnesses to the deed and a description of the property affected by the deed.
  • By name Grantor’s Index - an alphabetic list of sellers/lessors. Up to 1833 the Grantor index does not give the address or townland involved. It shows only the surname and first name of the grantor, followed by the surname of the first grantee, then the volume, page and deed number required to find the record. After 1833 the Grantor index adds the county in which the lands were situated
  • By place - Townlands Index - groups townlands together under their first letter only. The Land index groups townlands together under their first letter only. After 1828 the Land index is further divided by barony, so it is necessary to know the barony in which the townland was located. Cities and corporation towns have separate indexes arranged by street or vicinity.
Comprehensive instructions on searching these records can be found in the Regisrty of Deeds Index Project - Browse Guides to the Registry of Deeds.
