OF CEMETERIES IN MAURY COUNTY TENNESSEE
A valuable historic cemetery severely endangered - 10 + Graves)
Johnson-Amis Cemetery is located on the fringes of
Culleoka back in a thicket with a rock wall surrounding it. Coming out of
Culleoka and after passing
the railroad tracks turn right off of Valley Creek Road onto the new
school road and look to your right for the Hackberry thicket and the rock wall.
You will not see the rock wall unless is it winter time. The cemetery is in a sad condition now. Mr. Hawkins visited there in 1987 and reported
several box tombs were in good shape. Today however there is only four surviving
box tomb tops with the others having been smashed by vandals. Folks we know the
typical vandal are troubled teen boys out for vengeance and kicks. We need to do a better job
of watching over and nurturing these kids.
I tried to
reassemble the broken parts to be able to photo the inscription but had limited success
in doing that because there were so many small fragments and missing parts.
I was also unable to clean the cemetery enough to make a clear distinction of
the unmarked graves. Mr. Fred Hawkins says he saw at least 2 when he listed the
cemetery in the book Maury County Tennessee Cemeteries in 1987 and he mentions
some notable early Maury County persons whose remains may be there without
markers. Wayne Austin 11/11/2003
