The idea and purpose of the AUS-VIC Mailing list is so that researchers can discuss, share or exchange information with others.
This includes the different places of origin; and where, when and how they may have migrated or any other items of interest.
There are two modes available by which to receive the list messages. Below you will find instructions for subscribing to each mode and also for changing from one mode to the other.
For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included with the Welcome Letter.
Please save and file the Welcome Letter for future reference.
Subscribing with the L - by this method means that you will receive
every posting made to the AUS-VIC list as a separate e-mail.
Subscribing with the D - several postings are combined into the Digest
and sent to you together as a single large message. The Digest is sent
out approximately every 12 hours, or when the size of the messages reaches
the threshold size set.

Changing Modes
How to change from Mail mode to Digest mode:
If you are receiving individual emails (Mail or List mode) and you wish to change to Digest mode (more than one email at a time) you again have to request the change from L to D (List to Digest) or D to L (Digest to List).
To do this send and email to [email protected] type
the word "unsubscribe" in the body of the message.
Then send another email; type the word "subscribe" in the body
of the message, to: [email protected]
to continue in Digest mode.
How to change from Digest mode to Mail mode:
The directions are the same as above, only the process is reversed.
First, send an email to: [email protected]
with the word “unsubscribe” to stop the Digest mode.
Then send another email to [email protected]
with the word “subscribe” to start receiving the Mail mode.
NoMail Mode:
There is no formal NoMail mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above for unsubscribing when you want the messages to stop. When you again want to start receiving the list messages again, simply subscribe to the mode you desire.
The AUS-VIC List is a closed list, which means that only subscribers
can receive list messages, and only subscribers can post messages to the
list.
How to Post Messages:
Once you have successfully requested your mode of receiving emails
(List or Digest) you will be able to post a message so everyone on the
mailing list receives it, just send the message to
It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest modes. You don't need to send it explicitly to both.
If you wish to reply to a message posted, it is best, where possible, to use REPLY ALL rather than reply to sender only, that way everyone on the list gets to see your message and may be able to further assist you in your search.
If you are experiencing any difficulties with posting messages or perhaps
with any other listers please contact the listowner - [email protected].
If your mailbox gets full, or if your server has problems, you will be dropped from the List automatically by the Rootsweb auto-responders after a predetermined number of "bounces." Once the problem is cleared up, you can resubscribe.
If you have any questions regarding the mailing list, please contact
the listowner.
The short list of do's and don'ts:
"If you wouldn't want your mother reading it, don't post it". All complaints go to the list owner first. And of course since none of us are experts, no one should be hurt by another persons input or be too critical of any errors.
The more detailed Long List:
Please do not post any virus warnings to the list. If you have any concerns about a virus, please contact me - the listowner.
It is up to the Listowner to post such "warnings" and that way, the purpose of the list is not lost, the AUS-VIC genealogy List is not inundated with off-topic posts.
If everyone decided to post a warning about a virus the list would get clogged with unnecessary mail. Discussions could drag on forever with a lot of wrong information being spread. Have you ever been on a list where the "off-topic" discussion gets really out of hand?
Most of the virus warnings are hoaxes and if they are legitimate, the coverage in the media serves as plenty of warning.
Rootsweb does such an excellent job screening HTML, attachments
and SPAM from our lists, the dangers on a Rootsweb list are nearly non-existant.
