If anyone was/is missing an Eva MITCHELL, PLEASE contact me for more information at Silvia Pettem.

NOTE: Eva Mitchell, who had been reported missing in April 1954, saw the missing persons report in the Denver newspaper and announced that she was alive and well, just staying with a girl friend for a month. I'm glad I came across this because I have MITCHELLs in my family tree on my mother's side. Her grandmother was Martha MITCHELL. And it's gone as far back to Canada. A cousin on the MITCHELL line has been researching too. She believes that our MITCHELLs came from Ireland probably near Tyrone County and Armagh County. They may have arrived in Virginia or close and then went on to Canada before settling into Michigan where my great great grandmother, Martha MITCHELL, was born. Martha MITCHELL was born in Marine City, Michigan, but her father, John MITCHELL was born in Canada (most likely in Ontario) in 1836. John MITCHELL's father was born in Canada too. The father was James MITCHELL. That's all I have. I would love to know more abt my MITCHELL ancestors. Any clues/information you may give would be appreciated. Contact: Holly Sheutz.

I've been trying to find out about my husband's ancestry. He was born in Bathgate West Lothian Scotland as was his father. However his grandfather seems to have come from Bonnybridge. As my husband is called George, as is his grandfather and my father-in-law's name is John, I can only guess that his great grandfather is called John too. There seems to be a pattern here. Great grandfather had 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters. He must have died early, as great grandmother married again on 28th Dec. 1911. I would like to find out what was great grandfathers date of birth, marriage and death and if the ancestry can be traced back further.
My own family tree (Zweifel) can be traced back to 1494 and the name itself goes back to 900 odd. I'm fascinated by all this. I do hope you can find out more. Thank you. Contact: Ruth Mitchell.

I'm trying to locate the MITCHELL family William and Mary. They had a son Raymond according to the 1930 census. He died a few years back and was my father out of wed lock. MITCHELL/MCCLURE FAMILY IN MISSISSIPPI: I'm including my query that I recently placed in Lafayette Co., MS, along with a response received which has perked my curiosity. For those who are researching MITCHELLs in Mississippi, perhaps you will find this helpful and interesting too.

Query Subject: McClure's of Lafayette Co., MS I'm searching for information pertaining to my McClure/MITCHELL ancestors who lived in Lafayette Co., Mississippi and disappeared between the 1850-1860 census periods. The names are JAMES and ELIZABETH MITCHELL-MCCLURE.

This young couple met with tragedy and left behind 7 orphaned children. I've been unable to find any record pertaining to their disappearance, but with so many orphaned children involved I am confident that a record of this has been kept.

The JAMES MCCLURE family was intact in the 1850 Census of Lafayette Co., MS, Pg. 188. The record gives the names of the husband, James McClure, his wife, ELIZABETH and children ranging in age from 12 to 2 along with a mother-in-law, REBECCA MITCHELL, age 58.

In the 1860 Census, DeSoto Co., MS--Pleasant Hill, P.O., the head of household is the older son, CHARLES MCCLURE (aka C. J. McClure), age 22, and his grandmother, REBECCA MITCHELL, age 60. This census gives the names of several children and the youngest child born shortly after the 1850 census, John Rankin McClure, age 9, born in 1851.

It is also noted that in 1860, the McClure family lived next door to a JAMES S. MITCHELL family who is believed to be the son of REBECCA MITCHELL and brother of the missing, ELIZABETH MITCHELL-MCCLURE. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Joyce McClure The following is a response to the above query:

Dear Joyce: I read through your query a couple of times to be sure I grasped all the information and then searched through all books I have on Lafayette County which might offer a clue to find the answers you seek. There were no entries in the county cemetery abstracts for McClure, nothing in the probate court abstracts up to 1858, nothing in family histories in the Heritage book. The only thing I found was a short paragraph in: "Early Settlers of Lafayette Co." published by the Skipwith Historical and Genealogical Society in 1980, page 32, which reports that when the town of Wyatt was established in 1837, 3 of the people who bought lots there were Wyatt C. MITCHELL, Rebecca G. MITCHELL and James McClure."

Just on the off chance that I might find something of relevance, I also checked my small collection of books on neighboring Yalobusha County, but came up totally blank there.

All I can suggest now is for you to check with other lookup volunteers in counties that neighbor Lafayette and Desoto counties to check their cemetery and probate court records for any evidence that might exist. Good luck. Bill Ward.

I am searching for anyone with an Ellen MITCHELL, born 1837 in their family tree. She is my great great grandmother. The 1871 census lists her as born in the U.S. - doesn't say where. She married James Campbell(about 1858-1859) and lived her adult life in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Researching MITCHELL and Campbell. Contact: Kim Campbell O'Gorman

Betty, we now have a lead that my Jonathan MITCHELL is from Robert MITCHELL and Phebe Seaman of Jefferson County NY. Now we just have to make sure this is the right one. It has taken a life time of searching for my cousin Barbara Kohn to locate the connection but sadly to say Barb passed on before this was found. I know she would be proud that we could finally make the connection. Before she passed on she committed me to finish for her, and sadly 12 days after she came to my home and had a complete heart conversion, she did pass on to a better place with The Lord. So if any known information on this union of Robert and Phoebe Seaman is known by anyone please pass it on. Contact: Nancy Leone Mitchell Cunnington Staight.

I am searching for information on Benjamin M. MITCHELL b. 1815 KY, and Wyatt C MITCHELL b. KY d. 1838 Lafayette Co. MS. I am attempting to determine if Benj. M. and Wyatt C. were brothers. I have seen notations that Benj. MITCHELL was the son of Thomas MITCHELL. Both were land speculators. The first record I could find of Benjamin MITCHELL was that he recorded in the county court house a mark or brand in 1839. Next, he is on the 1840 census, page 2, line 4: B. M. MITCHELL 10010100000000-2000200000000. The 1850 tax rolls show a B. B. MITCHELL owned 15 acres of land valued at $30, farm implements valued at $130; harvested 130 bushels of corn and no cotton that year. The initials could be transcribed incorrectly.

1860 census, Lafayette Co., MS Family #431: Benjn Mitchel 49 M Laborer $21,000/$24,500 KY; Mary 46 F KY; Frank 21 M MS; Rufus 19 M MS; Bettie 11 F MS.

Tid bits from the book, "Early Settlers of Lafayette Co.," page 5: E. B. Mitchell, Robert MITCHELL and Wyatt C. MITCHELL named among the earliest land purchasers. Wyatt MITCHELL purchased 10 Sections of land (6,400 acres of land) in 1836/37 at a cost of $17,400. Wyatt was also one of 4 commissioners appointed to organize Lafayette and several other counties in the area. His name continues to come up on several other pages where he's concerned with land transactions. Page 60: W. C. My great grandmother, Bridget Devanney MITCHELL died in Fall River, Massachusetts in January of 1912 of diabetes. She was survived by her husband Frank MITCHELL and her four adult children: Ellen, Mary Catherine, James and Mabel. Also her mother, Mary Higgins Devanney. Bridget was born in Ireland somewhere around 1865ish. She is included in an 1880 census (she was listed as 14 years old at the time - she was 44 when she died) from England - Lancashire as a dependent of James Devanney. Somehow when they arrived here the spelling was changed to Devaney. Shortly after her death, her husband Frank went back to England alone and married his childhood sweetheart. The oldest daughter, Mary Catherine ran the household and looked after the younger siblings. All except James were working in the King Phillip Mill in Fall River. My grandmother, Mabel, married an Italian immigrant and I have not been able to find a church record of her marriage in 1918/19. Both James Devanney and his wife, Mary Higgins Devaney were born in Ireland and were listed as textile workers in the 1880 census.

I sort of hit a brick wall and don't know where to go next in order to find out more about James Devanney and his wife. If you help, I would appreciate it. (11 Dec 2003) Contact: Laura Wallace-Rhodes ,great granddaughter of Bridget Devaney Mitchell.

My mother's father Thomas (Torgar) Olsen who emigrated to Twin Lakes Michigan from Norway in the mid-1800's married an Agusta MITCHELL. They had one child, a daughter named Pearl. Augusta passed away and my grandfather married my grandmother who was named Ellen Viola Cady. My g-pa and g-ma Olsen are buried in the MITCHELL family plot in Twin Lakes cemetary.(Dalton Township) The MITCHELLs and later Pearl's husband named Marvin went to Methodist church in Holton Michigan (possibly Fremont township).

My mom is still living (85 years old) and has a sharp memory of these things. She, of course, knew her half sister Pearl who married Paul Marvin. Paul Marvin had two brothers named Ed, who was master of farmers market in Muskegon Michigan. Ed married a musican but mom can't recall her name. Paul had another brother named Charlie who went to Alaska to mine gold. He returned to Michigan (with gold). Paul and his father were farmers in Holton Michigan. Paul's father's name was Oscar Marvin. The Marvin farm was huge and they grew lots of different things. The farm inclued orchards and many things entered in county fairs. Oscar Marvin won lots of awards. Pearl and Paul Marvin had children named Bessie (maybe Elizabeth) Ruth and Raymond, Oscar (named for his g-pa) and Lloyd. Hope this is a line someone is looking for. Happy hunting! i would love to have info on Pearl's mother Agusta MITCHELLs clan prior to their settling in Twin lakes Michigan. (17 Aug 2003) Contact: Debbie Wright.

Luther Collum MITCHELL was born 22 Jun 1830, Washington Co, TN, and died 7 Jan 1902, Coles Co, IL. He was the son of James A. MITCHELL and Esther Collum. Between 1853 and 1860 family tradition holds that he traveled to California, then to Australia, and returned via England. He may have lived Missouri for a year circa 1870. I cannot locate him in the 1860 IL or MO censuses and would like to find him. (He married Hepzibah WADDELL on 5 March 1861, Coles Co., IL.) Kenneth W. Parent, Unit 31550, APO AE 09828-1550

Illinois mug books state the he died in 1873 in Coles Co IL, where he had siblings. However, neither Coles nor surrounding counties has a death or graveyard record for him. Trying to locate Jonathan Collum MITCHELL. He was the son of James Allison MITCHELL (1797-1843) and Esther Collum (1799-1885). According to Capt. Harry MITCHELL's genealogy, Jonathan was born 13 July 1821 Washington Co TN, and died 12 July 1884 (no location given).

I have the family in the 1850 census: 4th Subdivision Washington Co., TN, page 4, Ancestry image 3/310: "J. C., age 27, b. TN, with wife Emily 27, Cornelius E., 4, Hester I., 2, and James S., 1; all born TN."

I have notes from long ago that he appeared in the 1860 census with children Cornelia, Esther, James, Flavel, Ann, Katherine, Joseph, Luther, and Lilly. The notes are fragmentary (alas) and I do not know the location. The obvious Jonathans and JC's from the 1860 index are not he.

His father settled in Coles Co., IL, as did siblings. An 1879 Coles County Mug Book (copyright 1879) places him in Missouri as a farmer. I cannot find him or any of the male children in the 1880 every-name census. (My goal is to verify his date and place of death.) Any help appreciated. Kenneth W. Parent, Unit 31550, APO AE 09828-1550

My great-great grandfather was Miles L. Atchley. We have a marriage certificate that states he married Elizabeth MITCHELL on July 21, 1845 in Meigs Co., TN. From 3 different census records, we have their family living in Roane Co., TN in 1850; Rhea Co., TN, in 1860; and Davidson Co., TN in 1870. The census records indicate Elizabeth MITCHELL was born about 1812. Meigs, Rhea, Roane, and Blount Counties are all located close to each other with Knox County just a little bit north of them.

The dates and location of our Elizabeth MITCHELL fits with Rev. James MITCHELL & Sarah (Sallie) Nave's daughter Elizabeth.

Can anyone verify or dispute that Rev. James MITCHELL's daughter Elizabeth married Miles L. Atchley in Meigs Co., TN on July 21, 1845? (January 02, 2003) Contact Amy Atchley-Cole.
