HOLLISTON (MA)-- Forrest C Higgins Sr., 93, of Holliston, died
peacefully Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at Mary Morse Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center in Natick.
He was the husband of Kathleen L. (Reid) Higgins for 65 years.
Born in Moose River Gold Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada, he was the
second son of the late Harvey Higgins and Annie Frances Blair.
He grew up in Concord and graduated from Springfield College and
Bangor Theological Seminary. During high school and college, he
worked with his father, a miner and carpenter, on the construction
of houses in West Concord and in the mines in Moose River. After a
disastrous cave-in of the mines, he worked summers as a park ranger
at the cave-in memorial.
An avid outdoorsman, he kept his Nova Scotia Guides license active
into his 80s.
After the seminary, he was ordained in the Congregational Church and
was a minister in churches in Maine, New Hampshire and
Massachusetts, with his most recent parishes in Claremont, N.H., and
Hopkinton.
He was chairman of the board and executive director of The Boston
Seamans Friend Society for many years until his retirement. Almost
50 years ago, he founded Higgins Family Christmas Trees, a business
he passed on to the younger generations of the Higgins family. He
also passed on to his children his love of the lakes and woods,
working a big garden, his delight in a fresh ear of corn, cooking
and the construction of a well-turned phrase.
In 2002 he published "A History of Moose River Gold Mines,"
describing the village where he was born when it was a booming
gold-mining town.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children, Susan Dushane
and her husband, Theodore, of Ann Arbor, Mich., Sally Bergeron and
her husband, Gerard, of Holliston, Forrest Jr. and his wife, Kathy,
of Elmsvale, Nova Scotia, and Sandra Ghelli and her husband,
William, of Lancaster, N.H.; and his grandchildren, Michael and
Andrew Dushane, Julie and Jill Bergeron, Cleve, Elizabeth and Frank
Higgins and Thomas, Timothy, Kathleen and Nathan Ghelli.
He was the younger brother of the late Raymond Higgins.
A funeral service will take place Monday, Jan. 2, at 10 a.m., in the
First Congregational Church of Holliston, with the Rev. Andrea Wyatt
officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Grove Cemetery in
Holliston.
Donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 725
Washington St., Holliston, MA 01746.

-JOSHUA W HIGGINS DEAD-
-Lawrence loses one of its foremost citizens-
-Had been in business there 25 years-
LAWRENCE - JUNE 23,1901-
In the death of Joshua W. Higgins, at 5 O'clock tonight, this city loses one of it foremost citizens.
Mr. Higgins had been a prominent businessman for 25 years and was widely known and much
respected. He would have been 60 years of age had he lived 11 days longer. He was born in North Eastham.
About 18 months ago, because of failing health, he retired from the firm of Gowing &
Higgins, wholesale meat dealers, with which he had been identified for many
years. He was director of the Arlington National Bank, the Broadway Savings Bank and the Merchants
Express Company. He is survived by a wife and five sons, Henry of
Boston, Joshua W. Jr. of Hope, Kansas, Percy W. of Lawrence, Frank
E. of North Andover and Charles B. of Lawrence. He was brother in law of Swift
,the Chicago Packer and was Lawrence agent for the firm. No arrangements for the funeral have been made.

John E Higgins, of 18 Jay street, since last June a member of the State Constabulary attached to the
Framingham barracks, was almost instantly killed Saturday afternoon, when the motorcycle on which he
was riding collided with the rear end of an automobile at the junction of Newton street and Framingham
road, in Southboro. Higgins' motorcycle crashed into one of the rear mudguards of a machine operated by Joseph
Gaunt, of 64 Sterling Avenue, Providence, R. I., and he was thrown over the handlebars in such a way that
his head struck against the automobile. Higgins sustained a severe fracture of the skull and died
before medical aid could be obtained. Monday morning Gaunt was arraigned in the Westboro district court charged with operating an automobile so
as to endanger the safety and lives of the public. He pleaded not guilty and his case was continued to next
Monday for trial.
Higgins was born in Somerville and educated in the public schools. He made his home with his mother, Mrs.
Melvina [sic] Higgins. His father, James P. Higgins, for several years a patrolman of the Somerville police
department, died about ten years ago. In addition to a mother, he leaves a brother,
James Higgins, and three sisters, the Misses Agnes, Betty and Helen Higgins.
A largely attended funeral service was held on Tuesday morning at St. John's Church, North Cambridge. A
delegation of members of the State Constabulary, and four Somerville police officers acted as an escort
from the Jay street home to the church and to Oak Grove Cemetery, West Medford, where burial took place.
At the church a high mass of requiem was celebrated by Rev. Glynn, and committal prayers were read at the
grave by Rev. O'Brien, of St. Joseph's Church, Medford. There were many floral tributes. The family
has the sympathy of many friends.

The Somerville Journal, 23 March 1917
Patrolman James P. Higgins died from consumption Sunday evening at his home, 18 Jay street. His illness
began four years ago with an attack of pleurisy and from its effects he never fully recovered. His last
day's police work was performed January 23, 1917, at the city stable, where he had been on duty several
months. He made a brave fight against the disease and insisted on performing police duty whenever it was
possible.
He was appointed a member of the reserve force November 30, 1911, and was made a regular member of
the department on April 8, 1915. He was a plumber by trade. Patrolman Higgins was a member of Mt. Benedict
Council, No. 75, K. of C., and Somerville Police Relief Association. He was born in Somerville February
7, 1874, and was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth (McIntyre) Higgins, of Warwick Street, this city, and the late
John Higgins.
Besides a mother he leaves a widow, Mrs. Melvina [sic] V. (Delorie) Higgins, and five children,
John E., twelve; Elizabeth M., ten; James J., nine; Agnes
M., seven; Helen T., four years old; and two brothers, Alexander M.
Higgins, a Medford police officer, and John H. Higgins, who lives with the mother.
A largely attended funeral service was held Wednesday morning at St. John's Church, Massachusetts avenue,
North Cambridge, where a requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. John R. McCool. Burial was at Holy
Cross Cemetery, Malden. The pallbearers were Patrolman Thomas F. McNamara, Dennis Neylon, Arthur S. Walsh,
Thomas P. Walsh, representing Mt. Benedict Council, K. of C., and Fred J. Boutin and John McIntyre, of this
city, friends of the family. The police escort, in charge of Sergeant James M. Lynch, consisted of
Patrolmen Charles W. Shepherd, Walter L. Groves, Harry C. Young, Walter Reed, F. G. Jones, G. L. Rice, T. F.
Sharry, C. W. Reick, Alexander Morrison and Reserve Officers J. F. Cruise, T. F. J. Long and John P. L.

Lyman Higgins Accounts, 1851-1886
Scope and Contents of the Collection Lyman Higgins of South Worthington, Massachusetts is
depicted in the Federal Census and in town histories as having a variety of callings: mechanic, farmer,
blacksmith, sawmill proprietor, basket maker, and manufacturer. His account book 1851-1886, shows him to
have been all of these, becoming eventually chiefly a basket maker who supplied textile mills and paper
companies in locations as far away as New York City with large batches of assorted baskets tailored to
their needs.
In 1850, when Higgins was 27 and appeared in the Federal Census for the first time, he listed himself
as a mechanic, yet the accounts show he also repaired washing machines, wagon wheels and bog hooks. He
sharpened drills and file saws, and fixed hoops, sleds, and chairs. He also sold provender, made
ironware, and did the sawing and basketmaking on which he later focused. He took goods and services as well
as cash in payment. He was paid, for example, in onions, squash, and potatoes; glue, sandpaper, and
stove pipe; work on a dam and a horse to go to Huntington.
By 1880, Higgins had invested $1000 in his basket business and employed six hands at peak times,
although only one was a male above 16. Whether this means he employed women or younger apprentices is
unclear. He paid only $1.00 a day for skilled labor and $0.50 a day to the average worker. In all, he paid
$50 in wages for the year, although a workday was 10 hours.
He sold steam baskets in oak with extra finish to the Harris Woollen Mill; the Sugar River Paper Co. bought
copper finished bushel baskets; Stark Mills ordered doffer, filling, waste, and twister baskets; Lawrence
Duck Co. wanted doffin baskets with square corners.
At the same time, Higgins was running a sawmill where he did custom work making batches of handles (usually
pack, saw, or pointer), shingles, planks, or sled runners, among other things. He cut butternut, bass,
cherry, hemlock, beech, poplar, and other woods. Higgins has another $700 invested in the two-saw
sawmill, which employed three people during the 2 months a year that it was in production full-time.
During the years depicted in this account book, Worthington had numerous small manufacturers and mills
as well as many farms. Nearly everyone who lived in the town worked there as well, since fast
transportation was not available to other towns until later, although the only post office between
Northampton and Pittsfield was there for many years and the town was an important one on the Boston to
Albany Turnpike. Efforts to bring a railroad to Worthington failed; raw and finished goods had to be
hauled by team to Williamsburg or Huntington.
Higgins and his wife Mary had four children Theron, Jane, Alice, and Hiram.
Mary died in her 40's and Lyman married Elizabeth. By 1870 his real estate was
valued at $3000 and his personal estate at $450. That year, Theron was working in the basket shop and living
with his wife Lottie's parents-Willis Burke, a farm laborer. Hiram became a basket maker, too, and married
Fidelia, living for a while next to Lyman.

In 1941, WPI chose to name its new mechanical engineering building Higgins Laboratories. It was a well-deserved
tribute to a man whose vision was instrumental in shaping the educational philosophy of this highly regarded educational institution.
Milton Prince Higgins, a native of Maine, was a graduate of Dartmouth College. To earn college expenses, he served as an apprentice in a New Hampshire machine shop. It was here that he met
Ichabod Washburn, a principal founder of WPI and donor of the Washburn Shops
. . . .
The Higgins family residence long stood on the corner of West and Salisbury streets, now the site of Goddard Hall. Here, Milton and
Katherine Higgins raised four children. Sons Aldus and
John graduated from WPI in 1893 and 1896, respectively. Daughter Katherine married
R. Sanford Riley '96, and daughter Olive Higgins Prouty
became a noted author whose works include the best-selling novel Stella Dallas.
The four children jointly gave one of the largest gift units in Higgins Laboratories, but this was only a part of the family's generosity to WPI through the years.
Katherine Higgins Riley was the largest contributor to the building of Sanford Riley Hall in 1926, which was named in memory of her late husband.
John W. Higgins established a
scholarship in 1936 and endowed a special professorship in mechanical engineering.
Aldus C. Higgins is best remembered for his gift of Higgins House to his alma mater, though his gift to the college of a parcel of land adjacent to Alumni Field indirectly cleared the way for Higgins Labs to be built on its current site.
Olive Higgins Prouty is commemorated on campus through the Olive Higgins Prouty Library Fund. Originated by a bequest from Mrs. Prouty and augmented by generous gifts from her son, Richard
Prouty, the fund supports WPI's collection in the humanities
Although not an alumnus, Aldus Higgins' son, Milton P. Higgins
II, served WPI as a trustee for 31 years, six of them as chairman during the implementation of the WPI Plan in the early 1970s. In 1986 WPI established the Milton P. Higgins II Distinguished Professorship in Manufacturing in recognition of his many contributions to the
welfare of the Institute. The lecture hall in the Washburn Shops, where his grandfather made his mark, is also
named in his honor.
