Mlejnek Surname Study

Following is a list of Mlejnek families identified as of March 2008.

There are 40 families for which no linkage to the other families can be made. This is probably most likely due to a lack of information. There are obvious "clusters" in certain regions (particularly North and East of Prague) and that these individuals are related. In addition, I have 1000's of other individuals found in public records for which no other information exists.

This list was started about 30 years ago on the assumption that anyone having the name, Mlejnek, was related to everyone else having the same name. I have since concluded that that was a false assumption and the name probably arose spontaneously from many locations. Indeed, from, just my limited studies of my own family, I have discovered that the spelling of a surname varies with the location it is used. For example in Poland, the name Mlynek is very common. As families moved from one region to another, they adopted the colloquial spelling for their names.

Lastly, it was the custom for an unmarried woman to give her child her father's surname. In those instances it became a maternal line and if her father cannot be identified, the Mlejnek surname cannot be traced.

No one in this chart is still living. My interest is in identifying ancestral lines prior to WW I. For most folks that is where their records or memory ends. If anyone has good information on anyone with the name Mlejnek before the year 1900, I would be very like to see if a "match" can be found in my records.
