Dear Cousin:
I take my pen in hand to let you know that we
are all well at present. Hoping these few lines may find you
all well. I received your letter dated March the 19th, which gave
me great satisfaction to hear that you was all well and doing
well. You will please excuse my long delay of writing to you. The
connection is
all well as far as I know. Crops is tolerable good. Corn is scarce. Old
corn
is worth 754 per bushel, bacon 10 to 12, wheat $1 per bushel. I want to
hear from you all. Uncle Robert and Aunt Nancy, Uncle Zachariah and
Aunt Hester, and Aunt Jane McClurken, and all of my cousins. Tell
them that
I would be glad to see them all. James Lindsey is before the
people
for a seat in the State Legislature. Brother Carrel and David
Franklin
is merchandising. Wm. C. Lindsey has been twice to Louisvillle, Ky. to
buy
goods. B.L. Lindsey is teaching school and I finished laying
cotton
yesterday. We have had two children since I wrote you before, one
is a boy and the other a girl. They are 9 months old. We call the boy
John
Micajah, and the girl Nancy Lavina. We think they are very smart and
pretty.
My dear cousin give my respects to all of the
connection in that part of the country. Tell them that I would be glad
to hear from them all when I write to one I write to all. I would be
glad
to hear from them and converse with you face to face but as we live in
different parts of the country, we can all write or have it done. Any
of you can
write better than I can, let me hear from you all and where you all
live.
I understand that Cousin Samuel Waldrop had moved somewhere in this
state.
If so let me know where he is so that I can write to him and learn how
he
is doing. Mother wants to see you all very bad. We had two barbecues in
this neighborhood for the purpose of celebrating the fourth of July.
One
was on the 3rd and the other the 6th. They was both very well managed
and
good order prevailed throughout. The celebration was opened by prayer
then
the declaration read and a very appropriate address was made by Dr.
Robert
Morrow. He give the anti-war party thunder. I must come to a close, so
no
more at present but still remain, truly yours,

Micajah Lindsey said that Holland was born in SC and then moved with
his family first to middle TN (when he was 3 years old), to AL "when he
was only a plow boy" and finally to Mississippi, where he "raised his
family consisting of five boys and three girls."

All that part of the Chickasaw bordering
on the Tombigbee river was called
Monroe, and February 9, 1836, Itawamba was formed out of that territory
and organized
into a county, embracing about half of what is now Lee county, and part
of Prentiss
and Tishomingo counties.
The town of Fulton, the county seat, situated
on the east bank of the
Tombigbee, was laid off in 1836, and Charles Warren was elected the
first sheriff;
Louis Gideon, probate clerk; C. H. Ritchie, probate judge; R. O. Beene,
circuit
clerk. The first board of supervisors met in September, 1836; J.
S. Bourland was
elected president. The other members were A. G. Lane, John Beene,
S. S. Sperman
and E. Allen.
It is possible that the first white man to
visit and settle in this section
was Isaac Edwards in 1827. He was soon followed by J. S.
Bourland, Everett
Sheffield, John and Alfred Dulaney, M. Harrison, Reuben Wiygul, H.
Jamison,
Holland Lindsey, Jacob Green, Dorn Patton, Charles Warren, Josiah
Lindsey, E. G.

Thomas, Samuel Bell, Ed. Lesley, all now dead. J. Robins and M.
C. Cummings,
still living, were among the first settlers in 1836. The land
sales took place
at Pontotoc and the county rapidly settled up.
The Tombigbee river runs through the county
from north to south, and
numerous crreeks afford fine water power. There are several
earthenware
factories and some wool carding mills in the county. The river
furnishes
transportation during part of the year. Much of county is finely
timbered. Some
timber is being rafted out by the river. The principal varieties
growing here
are the oaks, pine, hickory, maple, beech, walnut, gum and
cypress. This is a
hilly county, with fertile valleys, and the chief products are corn,
cotton,
fruits of all kinds, oats and some wheat. The county abounds in
good water from
never-failing springs. Many fine streams run into the Tombigbee
in this county.

However, under "Alternate name" is listed "Samuel H Lindsey"
43rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry
43rd Infantry Regiment was formed during the summer of 1862 with eleven
companies. Some of its members were Kemper and Noxubee Counties. After
fighting at Iuka and Corinth, the unit was assigned to General L.
Hebert's
Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and was captured
at Vicksburg in July, 1863. Exchanged, it went on to serve under
Generals
J. Adams and Lowry, Army of Tennessee. The 43rd participated in various
conflicts throughout the Atlanta Campaign, then saw action in Tennessee
and North Carolina. It reported 13 killed, 56 wounded, and 156 missing
at Corinth, had 483 effectives in February, 1863, and during the
Vicksburg
siege lost 25 killed and 33 wounded. In December, 1863, only 1 officer
and
36 men were present. On April 26, 1865, it surrendered. The field
officers
were Colonels Richard Harrison and William H. Moore, and Lieutenant
Colonels
James O.Banks, Richard W. Leigh, and Columbus Sykes.

During 1909, Mrs. Mollie Gaither of Fulton, submitted the following
19th century newspaper clipping to the Itawamba County News. The old
newspaper clipping was printed in the October 14, 1909 edition of the
newspaper. Below is a transcript of the old clipping:
At the breaking out of the Civil War in 1861, there were about 40
voters within the corporate limits of the town of Fulton, and 5 or 6
boys
who were under age. Of that number, 18 were killed in battle and died
of
disease contracted in the army, towit: Eugene Clifton, died at
Pensacola,

garrison surrendered unconditionally. This was a major victory for Brig.
Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and a catastrophe for the South. It ensured that
Kentucky would stay in the Union and opened up Tennessee for a
Northern advance along the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. Grant
received a promotion to major general for his victory and attained
stature in the Western Theater, earning the nom de guerre
“Unconditional Surrender.”

CROWN HILL CEMETERY PROJECT
On October 3rd 1993 a four year project was completed when a monument
was dedicated to 1,616 Confederate soldiers and sailors at Crown Hill
Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In 1989 two Indianapolis police officers, interested in historical
preservation, started an effort to have the mass grave of Confederate
prisoners
of war properly marked. Four years later, after being joined by such
organizations as the Civil War Roundtable, Sons of Confederate
Veterans, Sons of Union Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, the Southern Club and many other groups and individuals, a new
Confederate memorial was dedicated.
In Indianapolis during the Civil War, 1,616 Confederate soldiers and
sailors died from the harsh treatment and conditions prevalent in
military prisons in those days. These men were being held in Camp
Morton, which held approximately 5,000 prisoners at any one time. A
total of 15,000 men passed through the camp between 1862 and 1865.
Orignally, the Confederates who died while being held at Camp Morton
were buried at Greenlawn Cemetery near downtown Indianapolis. Years
later when bodies were removed from this cemetery to make way for
industrialization, the first monument to the Rebels was removed to a
city park. Several years later, the bodies of the Confederates were
moved to Crown Hill Cemetery, without their monument.
Since the 1912 monument would no longer fit onto the mass grave site at
Crown Hill, a new marker at Crown Hill stated "1,616 Unknown
Confederates". But, records from the National Archieves and from the
old monument, revealed all of the names, dates of death and ranks of
the deceased. So the Crown Hill Cemetery Project was created to right
this wrong. This effort proved to be the forerunner of the current
Indiana Coalition to Honor Civil War Dead.
At a beautiful ceremony in 1993, before hundreds of onlookers, the new
Confederate Memorial was dedicated at a service attended by many
officials and relatives of the dead. The keynote speaker was
Congressman Andrew Jacobs, a supporter of the project. At this
dedication were military honor guards from the United States Army and
Civil War reenactors.
Now the 1,616 Americans buried at the Confederate mound in Crown Hill
rest in peace, properly recognzied at last.

member of New Providence Primitive Baptist Church. In 1853 he
established a ferry across Big Bear Creek on the Road from Frankfort,
AL to Carrollville, MS. The ferry was named the Pittsburgh Ferry.
