WALTON |
William & Mary Walton
arrived in St. Louis, Missouri 1808. In a lengthy St. Louis Circuit Court Case "Peter, a man of color vs. James Walton" lists William Walton and his children during the proceedings. Partial paragraph from Case file of "Peter, a man of color vs. James Walton" To the honorable Wm. C. Carr, Judge of the Circuit Court of the County of St. Louis and state of Mipouri, June 1, 1829: Your petioner, Peter, represents to your honor that he was born in North Carolina, the property of Wm. Walton; that the said William Walton immigrated from the said state of North Carolina to the state of Missouri about twenty-one years since, and brought your petioner with him as his property. (This would have us know that William arrived in St. Louis to live about 1808) William & Mary settled a tract of land near what many decades later was to become the city of Overland, Missouri. Evidence indicates the original family holdings in the new land were in the vicinity of Joshua Massey's land grant, extending beyond what is now Walton road on the east, Ashby road on the west & Olive street road on the south. Various descendents of the Walton's acquired numerous other tracts of property throughout the county, but the original family manse probably was located near present day Woodson road & Midland avenue, the heart of modern Overland. William & Mary raised their children on an ever expanding farm. William's estate was part of the 640 acres granted to Joshue Massey by the American government of which William purchased. WASHBURN | Unknown WASHBURN and wife, gave birth to my grandfather
Robert Edward
Lee WASHBURN, Dec. 15, 1865, Carthage, MO. There were other children I
think.
Next known location of family is in St. Louis, MO, where above Robert E. WASHBURN married a Mary Elizabeth (STILLMAN I think), born June 18, 1878, died 1863. Robert died about 1908. I have been unsuccessful in finding any info on Mary's origins and do not know her maiden name. The couple lived at 5030 Claxton, St. Louis and after Robert's death, Mary continued to live there until her 1963 death. (I found her on 1920 and 1930 census rolls, in 1920 working as a department store clerk, and 1930 working as a box maker) Robert was a musician, music teacher and a composer who published his own music.) I have many of the lead plates and some of his music, composed mostly in the period 1900-1908. Whole family musical, had a family band. Mary sang. The couple are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lucas-Hunt Road, St. Louis. Children of the couple are: John WASHBURN, born St. Louis, MO, about 1901-1903, died 1955, buried in Memorial Park Cem., Lucas-Hunt Rd., St. Louis, MO. Was living at home on the 1920 census. I think he later taught piano and married a woman named Ruth, also buried in same cemetery with the family. Mary WASHBURN, born St. Louis, MO, about 1901-1903, died about 1928, buried in same above cemetery in St. Louis. Mary was on the 1920 census, working as a department store clerk. She died of cancer at about age 26. The son, Robert (born 1897) lived in ARK, Louisville, KY, and from 1949, lived in Texas near the Dallas area in Lisbon (near Waxahachie) and in Garland. He and Audrey moved to Mt. Ida, ARK to retire in about 1964, where he died in Jan. 1967. Robert, who was a pianist and musician when young, worked all his life in the area of bookeeping and accounting. Among some of the possessions retrieved after Mary WASHBURN's
1963 death,
is a book with the name, Mary E. CAVANAGH with a note that she rec'd
the
book from her grandfather--and inside was a news clipping from a
Newport,
ARK paper announcing my mother's birth--Frances C. WASHBURN (WILLIAMS)
and stating that there were 5 generations in the baby's family--that
she
had a great-grandmother living in St. Louis. A GENEALOGY.COM query posted by a J.FRANKE, a relative thru marriage I think, in 1998 had information on Robert and Mary WASHBURN and family burial in St. Louis, and asked for info about his music and compositions, but I discovered the posting late and have been unable to contact J. FRANKE. |

in Franklin (Howard Co) Missouri
in 1820 where he ran a select school (He rented the property) &
Mrs. Ann E. Washington came to join him in 1825 where they both taught
school. This information was in the Missouri Intelligencer.
By 1828 the town of Franklin was flooded and they had to move.
Perhaps to Booneville (across the MIssouri River and in Cooper
Co). Their names are listed in a book by McDaniel (which Cooper
Co. listed on the internet but it doesn't say the name of the
book). So they must have moved to Booneville. They had a
son, Leonidas, born in 1828 in Missouri. Do you know anything about this Washington family? They had another son, Charles Carroll Washington born in 1832 in Missouri. By 1835 they had moved to Mississippi where their son, George Washington, was born & eventually to Arkansas. |

Searching for information on 2
different branches of Watson's in Missouri and 1 that I cannot place
here yet.
Branch 1- Fred Watson born
Jan. 10,1890 in Webster Co. Mo. and died in 1968. He married Loretta
Bell Scott. This is all I know about this family.
Branch 2- Albert G. Watson
born 1805 in Hagerstown Maryland. He married Angeline McNamar born
1809. They had 11 children, Martin L. Charles A. Hiram S. Sarah Jane,
Lawrence M, Benjamin Rubush, Nancy Ellen, Howard Scott, Wellington
B. Marcellus Hayden and Charles A.
Angeline and the children were
all born in Virginia except the youngest Charles A, who was born
in Illinois. The family left Hardy Co. West Virginia, and was in
Illinois by 1860. Charles A was born in 1867. By 1870 they were in
Jasper County Missouri. I can't find most of the family after 1880.
Branch 3- This family includes
such people as; Elkanah, George, Robert, John, Cyprian, 3 sisters
Lucia, Elizabeth and Patience Marston who all married 2 Watson
brothers and their nephew. This branch is mainly in the New England
States, but I found this information in some old papers of my
grandmother's and can't help but wonder where Albert G. Watson ( of
branch 2) is in relationship to this family.

Wm. was born (all children born in MO) They went to Iowa in 1855 and were there for at least 1 year, but John was back in MO and remarried to Jane Ann Anderson and had their first child together (in MO) by 1859. I do not know if Martha died , or if she was divorced. John Maginness was a Lawyer in Iowa, and in that era, men kept the children if there was a divorce, and they wished to do so. I am trying to find out where in Ky she was from and where in MO she lived, and if anyone out there knows if she died or remarried? Are there any Watsons in Howell, Cass, Harrison co's? |

WEBBER, Charles James | Born February 11, 1887, married Susan Louisa Garbs September 29, 1925, died March 4, 1943. He met my grandmother Susan when he was working with a railroad crew or on a boat, at Berger, MO. He came from St. Louis. His family may have come from Yugoslavia. When his parents died, he was put in a home for boys run by Brothers in St. Louis. He had two sisters, one Clara and one Mary. We don't have any information on them at all. I have no other information regarding who his parents were. None of the information I have on him is concrete. He was married before. I have had no luck in tracing down anything on him. |

WELCH | I need some help in researching my
fathers side of the
family, here's
what I know: My Great Grandfather was David Welch, born in Kentucky, 1885. He married Edna, who was born in Nebraska, 1890. I suspect the year of birth is probably transposed. David and Edna had 5 boys, Arthur, George, James, Loyd (Brownie), and I believe Glenn, all born in the early 1900's, Loyd being born October 27,1913. Arthur had no children, George has 1 child, a boy, whom I'm currently working on, I don't believe there was any contact between the two. George was a POW in WW2. James had two children, Jimmy jr., and Treva. Loyd married Reatha Evelyn Green, who was born May 26, 1916, in Gramby, Mo. They married November 27,1936, in Richmond, California. Loyd and Reatha had 4 son's, Wayne, born September 26, 1937 in Richmond Calif. Wayne had two son's, Ronnie and Jerry. David was born August 30, 1938, in Richmond, Calif. David had 2 children, Bessie, and David jr. George was born October 23, 1943, in Carterville, Mo. He had 5 children, Tim,Susan,Michele,Marsha, and Michael. Cecil was born October 25, 1951, in Neck City, Mo. and has no children of his own. Two of the 4 children of Loyd and Reatha passed away, David W. Welch passed away October 5, 1991. George M. Welch passed away August 10, 1996. Both of Cancer. Reatha Welch passed away January 28, 1966, and Loyd passed away October 24, 1992. Both of cancer as well. All of the above where laid to rest in Friends Cemetary, Purcell, Mo. |

Barry Co, and other Counties around Barry Co. JAMES (Jim Dad) WESTON LED A WAGON TRAIN TO BARRY CO.,MO. IN 1851 FROM LEE & SCOTT COUNTIES, VA.; HAWKINS & HANCOCK COUNTIES,TN. James and his wife, Elizabeth Babb, led a wagon train of eleven wagons, one hack, and two wheeled carts to south Barry County, MO, where they settled. This consisted of four related families from Hawkins and Hancock Counties of Tennessee and Lee and Scott Counties of Virginia. James' family settled where Seligman, MO, was developed some thirty years later. He set up a blacksmith shop and made wagons with the help of his sons." In 1861, the Civil War broke out, and James' four oldest sons enlisted in Company B, 11th Missouri Infantry (Confederate): William, James, Simon and Harvey. Simon was soon discharged due to deafness caused by canon fire. James and Harvey surrendered to Union forces at New Orleans in 1865, but were paroled a month later at the end of the War. William never came home: he was killed in 1863 near Helena, Arkansas. |

WHIPPLE,
James William |
son of Nathan and brother
to Joseph, moved from Luzerne Co., PA in the late 1870s, along with
Jacob & Fannie Hardenstine. He later sent for his wife and
children. His wife was Caroline SANTEE, of Luzerne Co., PA. After
several of their babies died within a year or two in Wilkes-Barre, they
moved to MO to start a new life. I'm interested in finding anyone who
is related to this family. This article was published in the Wilkes-Barre record in March of 1891. DEATHS WHIPPLE, - in St. Joseph, Mo., Feb 27 1891, James William WHIPPLE, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, aged 64 years. Mentioned elsewhere. (on same page) Died In The West. George Pilkington, of Atchison, Kan., informs the Record of the death at St. Joseph, Mo.,of James William Whipple, an old resident of Wilkes-Barre. Deceased, for many years, worked for HC Frey and William Dickover in Wilkes-Barre. For several years he made his home in Parsons previous to moving to St. Joseph, Mo., in 1878. A St. Joseph paper says: "James W. Whipple was born in Newport, Pa. on the 29th day of May, 1827, and was a bricklayer and miller by trade. He was a competant and skilled mechanic in both branches, and at one time in his younger days operated one of the largest flour mills in Pennsylvania. He was married in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Dec 2, 1852, to Miss Caroline Santee of that city. Their married life was a long and happy one, the fruits of which were six children, three boys and three girls: William D. Whipple, now in Dallas, Texas; Walter S. Whipple, well known in this city, he being in the mantle and tile business for many years; Robert J. Whipple, well known in railroad circles, having a run as engineer on the old "Wabash" route; Mrs. George Phillips of this city, and Misses Lizzie C. and Lena M., unmarried and living with their mother. WITTER, Marshal B. | This was taken from "History of Adair, Sullivan, Putnam
&Schuyler
Counties" publish about 1888, Chicago: THE GOODSPEED PUBLISH CO.
It is about Marshal B. Witter, born 1802, Vermont; died May 27, 1905,
Milan,
Sullivan County Missouri; he married Marth Sacket, born 1808, died
1892,
on Dec. 28, 1828. He was my g-g-g-grandfather. "The father (of Dr. W.L. Witter) is of English and German ancestry and born in Franklin County, VT., in 1802. He received his education at the common schools and St. Albans Academy, and by close application of his books, at the age of eighteen was competent to teach a district school. He then taught several years, during which time he studied law, and in 1826 was admitted to the bar at St. Albans. He immediately began to practice and in 1834 removed to Paynesville, Ohio, having previously been in Sullivan County. In 1854, he moved to Milan, where he practiced his profession successfully for ten years, but at the end of that time was obliged to retire to private life on account of his age. He was a Republican, and cast his first presidential vote for John Adams in 1824. In 1850, he was first elected justice of the peace and afterward filled that office at different times for twenty years. He served as county attorney of Sullivan County for four years, to which office he was appointed by the county court, and in 1851 was appointed swamp land county commissioner, which office he held fifteen years. He served as mayor of Milan six years, and is a man greatly respected for his high character. He came to Sullivan County one year previous to its organization, when the country was unbroken prairie and has since been a resident of same. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for the past forty years. The mother, Martha (Sackett) Witter, is of German descent and born in Franklin County, in 1808. She is still living, and has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for sixty years." |

William Higgons (may be spelled Higgins) Wooley and wife Grizzella Wooley (Mitchell). They moved from Garrard County, Kentucky in the late 1840’s. They lived in Grundy County for at least 15 years before moving onto Eugene, Oregon area. My question is that their 10th and last child was born Dec. 18, 1855 and died within a few days – Dec. 27, 1855. I would like to find out the sex of child, if a name was given to the infant, if a grave can be located. |
