History of the Dorr Family
|
The Dorr family of Upstate SC began, as far as we know. in the Piercetown Community of Anderson County,
SC. The first located ancestor was George W. Dorr. George was born around 1800. It is unknown where
he was born. We have narrowed his point of origin down to the state of New Hampshire or the country
of Ireland by making use of the 1850, 1880, and 1920 Census as well as the 1860 Mortality Index for Anderson
County, SC.
The first documentation found on this Dorr family is a land conveyance dated 4 Feb.
1833. The land was purchased from the Estate of Jno B. Earle. It is unknown where George was before
this conveyance, but it is very likely he was in SC as early as 1827 when his oldest known child was
born.
It was originally believed that Mr. Dorr or Grandfather Dorr, as he was affectionately known
as, had only 4 children; George Washington, John Balis, Millie, and Betty. This is incorrect, as our
research has found there were at least 8 children. The oldest known child was James Dorr, born abt 1827.
Then came Thomas, born abt. 1829; John Balis, born abt. 1832; Mary (Millie), born abt. 1837; Paul H.,
born abt. 1841; George Washington, born abt 1842; Charles W., born abt. 1846; and finally Amanda, born
abt. 1850. We found the child known as Betty was actually the daughter- in - law to George W. Dorr.
