Simpson, Harold B. HILL COUNTY (TEXAS) TRILOGY. Hillsboro, TX:
Hill College Press, 1986. Page 111. From list of Confederate
Veterans living in Hill County, TX, 1865-1925. "Turk, T.C., Co.
B, 1 MO Inf. Standwaitie's Brig."
U.S. Census - 1910. Texas, Howard Co., Vol. 72, E.D. #122,
Family #1. Thomas C. Turk, age 82, b. KY - with spouse in
household of daughter & son-in-law (Gillie & Robert H. Turk).
From personal note of B.A. Isaac, dated June 23, 1953 - in
possession of Norris Turk. "Thomas Carter Turk was a man in full
prime during the Civil War and saw a great deal of service in
what was known as bush whacking of that time. He was in General
Price's Army and a member of General Quantrill's Raiders. He had
many narrow escapes and up until his death delighted in walking
the floor with his hands clasped behind him telling the Civil
War stories....Some of the neighbors were Yankees and some
Rebels. My grandfather's father (Noah Gleaves Turk) had 2500
acres of land. He decided to leave the community and the Yankee
neighbors took possession of the land. Ben Turk went back and
lived there until he died.
Uncle Tom (Thomas Price Turk) was born during the War and the
Yankees came to burn the house when he was 10 days old. My
grand-mother (Elizabeth Traylor Turk) persuaded them to give her
two weeks, which they did. In two weeks they came back and
burned the house, and my father held Uncle Tom and watched the
house burn. My grand-father ran out the back door when the
Yankees came and from a hilltop watched the house burn. That
night he came back and moved the family down to Arkansas, where
they found land and plenty of it. Grandfather was in the battle
of Pea Ridge and his horse was shot out from under him. Seeing a
horse without a rider, he ran to it and was mounting from one
side as a Yankee pulled up from the other side and shouted, 'Get
off my horse'. He captured the horse and this was the horse that
helped bring them to Texas.
Mandy (Amanda Turk) and my father rode the horse and the rest
came in an ox-drawn wagon. They being on horse rode ahead of the
wagon thru Hillsboro (Texas) and on the Peoria road they found
an unoccupied house. This move was right after the Civil War.
Someone in Milford had told them of this house just beyond
Hackberry creek near Hillsboro. My grandfather went to Peoria to
see the owner of the house and found that he expected another
man to be here at 10 o'clock that morning for the same purpose.
The owner held his watch in his hand and at 10 o'clock gave the
place to my grand-father. They looked up and saw the other man
coming down the road.
Thomas and Elizabeth lived here for several years. She died and
he married Eugenia Corry who owned a farm across the road to
which they had moved. This became the Turk homestead until they
sold it and moved to Big Springs...."
