OFFICER'S CERTIFICATE OF DISABILITY
  FROM PENSION PAPERS OF JOSIAH ELDER, 1878
 
State of OHIO County of HOCKING S.S.
On this 9th Day of December 1878 before me, personally appeared S.D. Morgan to
me well known, being respectable and entitled to credit, who being duly sworn, says:
That he was Captain of Co. "E" 179 Reg't OHIO  Inft. Vols.
and was well acquainted with Josiah M. Elder
who was a Private of Co "E" 179th" Reg. OHIO Infty Vols.;
that at the time of his enlistment, said Josiah M. ELDER
"was in the best of health--in fact was very stout and rugged,
And, was of the best of habits (Strictly sober--attending to duty Always)"

That on or about the 15th day of December 1864 at or near Nashville, State of Tennessee
said Josiah M. Elder was disabled in the line of his duty by:
"was taken sick with something like Erysipelas which afterwards settled in his Eyes--And for the remainder of the time that he served in my Co. he had Very Severe Sore Eyes notwithstanding he availed of the best medical skill at hand he was unable to Effect a Cure.

This occurred under the following circumstances or causes, to wit:
J.M. Elder "was at the Time that he was taken Sick,
Engaged in the defense of Nashville Tenn. Against Genl. Hood and his Army.
He was a Private in my Company and was always with the Co.,
hence was under my Immediate Command."
I know these facts:
"from the fact I was his Comdg Officer and was Present,"
and I have no interest whatever in the prosecution of the Claim for Pension.

DECLARATION FOR WIDOW'S PENSION
Mary A. ELDER....
She is 69 years of age, that she was born March 2nd, 1862, at Ridgeway, Michigan.
That she is the widow of Josiah M. Elder...died Dec. 23, 1931, Petersburg, Michigan.
That she was married to said soldier Sept 25, 1890 under the name of Mary A. Bonney
at Rea, Michigan by Rev. M.R. Saigeon, that she had been previously married, that he had been previously married:
First wife of Josiah M. Elder was Emily A. Trombly, died on Mar 2, 1889.
First husband of Mary A. Elder was Dell Bonney--Divorced on July 28, 1890--no children.
