Hi folks,
Today I enjoyed reading a book about Presbyterians in early
BALLYMONEY County Antrim, which is now online.
Thanks to helpful postings on FRANKLIN CO PA Discussion group (PAFRANKL-Rootsweb
List):
"A Short History of the Presbyterian Churches in Ballymoney"
by Rev. A.H. Dill and others, 1898.
Full text on "Internet Archives"
at
http://www.archive.org/stream/cu31924008573887/cu31924008573887_djvu.txt
Page 11-12 mentions "THOMAS ELDER"
Chapter 1. Early
Settlers of the Route.
Page 10. ..."an old manuscript book has
been preserved and has come into the possession
of the Session of the congregation. This book, brown and worn with
age, many of its leaves torn
and defaced, and parts of it missing altogether, is all that remains
of the records of the congregation
of Ballymoney from its beginning till the year 1817. .."
Page 11. ..."Amongst the earliest names occurring in this old record
are the following :
John Boyd, Robert McElhose, Benjamin Boyle, Robert Biggart,
John Hopkin, Hugh McMaster, John Hamil,
Thomas Elder, John Lusk, John Ramsay, Alex. Dunlop,
and Alex. Calderwood ; all of whom were elders of the church, and
took part in the meetings of
Session. Several of these are of special interest because they are
the direct ancestors of families
still in connection with the Presbyterian Churches of Ballymoney...."
Page 12. "The Hamils, Elders and Lusks, the Ramsays and McMasters
have branched out in many directions,
and have given many prominent and useful members to the Presbyterian
Church...."
Where does Thomas ELDER belong in our DNA lines?
"PAXTANG PA" I-haplogroup-Viking ELDER DNA group,
or my brother's "FRANKLIN CO PA" R1b ELDER DNA group.
Or another line altogether...

# Note:
Alma Audley Bright is his second wife.
He traveled a great deal with his job.
He never remarried after the death of Alma Bright.
He had a grandmother that had lived in Edinbourgh,
Scotland and would
visit her on school vacations. His parents had
moved to Northern Ireland,
where he was born. He had a chance to go to college
at the government
expenses when he was 14 years old, but his father
told him that if he
went to college he would have to study to be
a Presbyterian minister.
He left home when he was 14 years old, got on
a sailing ship and came to
the United States. He never corresponded with
any of his family after he
left home.
His mother died when he was young and his sister
took over running the
family. He said that he had a brother living
in Australia with one
largest sheep ranches at that time.
He was job transferred to Milwaukee,Wisconsin.
They had moved into an
apartment right before Alma Audrey Bright had
passed away. They didn't
know anyone in town.
Not much later James had purchased a home there
and lived there until he
passed away. He had a stroke and laid paralyzed
in bed for five years
until his death at the age of 72."

Hi all,
>My name is Michelle - This is my first message
- I am hoping
somebody out there can help me in my search for my ancestors.
I have hit a bit of a brick wall, mainly because my immediate family
are from Northern Ireland and a lot of the records were burned in
some fire or other.
> I am trying to find out the names of the parents
or any other
relative of Nathaniel Elder, born 11 November 1835 in the Rasharkin
/
Dirraw area of Northern Ireland. I know that this Nathaniel was
married to Hannah Wilson and he had 4 brothers
(Joseph Dickey, John, James and Robert) and 2 sisters (Mary and
Ellen Jane).
> I think his father was also called Nathaniel,
but that is as much
as I know.
> If anybody has any info at all which may relate
to this please
mail me.

stayed in that position for 60 years.
James had two sons who emigrated to South Carolina in 1805. The

Judith Kruse writes:
I have a book from Finvoy Presbyterian that the Elders presented
to me when I went there
for Sunday services that states that James was born "near
Garvaugh" in Derry Co.
From The Irish Presbyterian: Our Own Worthies. XII. Rev. James Elder,
of Finvoy
2nd paragraph:
"His father was John Elder, a decent farmer on the Garvagh
Estate, in the townland of Ballury, in the County of Derry.
This beautiful region belongs to the great Canning family, which
produced an English Premier and an Indian Viceroy,
and is remarkable for the large numbers of excellent ministers it
has supplied to the Presbyterian Church.
James Elder was born on Christmas day, 1757. He had a half-brother,
named Matthew Elder,
who became minister of Kilraughts, and was equally noted as a correct
and accomplished writer -
though said to be inferior in pulpit power - as by his simplicity
and benevolence of character.
I am not aware whether there was any relationship to that John Elder,
minister of Aghadoey(sp),
who took a prominent part in the Nonsubscription Controversy in
the early part of the eighteenth century.
We know nothing of James Elder's youth or education. He was licensed
to preach on the 17th December, 1778,
when he was twenty-one years of age, and was ordained to the pastoral
charge of the Congregation of Finvoy
on the 13th June, 1780. This ancient seat of Presbyterianism dates
from the period of the Commonwealth,
when one of Cromwell's officers - Captain Galland - organised (sp)
a society.
The first minister of whom we have any record was the Rev. Robert
Henry, who lived at the period of the Revolution,
and was succeeded by the Rev. Robert Haltridge, so well known in
connection with the Nonsubscription Controversy.
This minister died in 1727, and was succeeded by the Rev. David
Smylie, in the year 1734;
but Mr. Smylie afterwards removing to Maghera, the Rev. Gideon Nelson
became minister of Finvoy in 1742.
During the old age of this minister, Mr. Elder commenced his long
and successful ministry as his assistant and successor.
The parish of Finvoy - or, at least, a district called the Vow,
near Rasharkin is famous, in Presbyterian history,
as the place where, in the year 1761, the first Irish Covenanting
minister, the Rev. Matthew Lynd, a native of Larne, was ordained.

Bio of Matthew ELDER, b. 1788 - emig. to America 1812
at
http://www.pa-roots.org/data/read.php?104,574305
"MATTHEW ELDER (deceased), whose portrait appears elsewhere
in this volume,
was born in the parish of Finvoy, County Antrim, Ireland, in January,
1788....
"In 1812 he came to America....
...."1821...he built a factory on Little Beaver Creek..."
"This was in what was then called Little Beaver
township.
At that time they had to go to what is now called Old Enon to vote,
and the nearest postoffice, Greersburg, was five miles away.
The name of the town was changed to Darlington on account of letters
addressed to Greersburg going to Greensburg.
Then the township was divided and called Darlington, and what was
left of Little Beaver township went into Lawrence county
when that was formed. Mr. Elder did an extensive business and bought
nearly all the wool grown in Beaver, Lawrence
and Washington counties, Pa., and Columbiana county, Ohio.
He possessed a considerable tract of land about the mill at one
time.
Between the years 1830 and 1840 he owned, remodeled and enlarged
the grist mill and oil mill
and bought wheat and flaxseed, which was a great advantage to the
farmers at that time.
Between the years 1841 and 1843 he dug a tail race three-quarters
of a mile long, walled the same with stone on both sides...."

Ray Elder of Ireland wrote (6/23/2009) about a MISSISSIPPI plantation:
>"In a congregation history book (extract supplied by Rev. Lindsay
Blair of Faughanvale Presbyterian Church),
Rev. James Elder wrote to comfort his daughter Jane Maria Moore
(Nee Elder) as she lay sick in Muff (now Eglinton) in 1835.
"I hope", he writes, " you have profited spiritually by your affliction..."
>The congregation book also states that Jane Maria Moore
stood to inherit a substantial property
following the death of her brother, a Mississippi planter.
She refused the inheritance because of her conscientious objection
to slavery."
