   >Hi Ann and Listers,
  >I would like to identify the origin of Elizabeth "Mary" PATTERSON
(father William) who was born in the lowlands of Scotland (probably
near Glasgow) about 1700-1708 and married Thomas ELDER either there
or in County Antrim near Lough Neagh, Ireland.
From there they immigrated to PA about 1730-1733  where they settled in Paxtang, PA.
Thomas ELDER left a will dated 8 May 1751 and probated 3 Aug 1752. I
would like to know more about this branch of the Patterson family.
  >Thanks for your help,
Dave

> Hi Dave and Listers
..... >I have a Thomson Family genealogy table prepared by John James Elder
born at Ashgrove, Castlefin, County Donegal, November 5, 1859.
He died in Toronto,Ontario. I don't know when.
His father, Andrew married a Thomson of Moyle, Co. Donegal.
   >I am a Patterson, presently of Ottawa, Ontario, whose GG grandfather,
John Patterson, of Rubbleshinney, Milford, Donegal (b. Oct. 10, 1814)
married another Thomson sister. I can account for the Pattersons of this marriage.
   >John was the son of William Patterson. He married Sarah Jane Gallagher.
    >That is as far as I can go with my Pattersons, right now. The Elders and
Pattersons in this case are cousins.
  >The author of this genealogy identifies his Elder family as being
descended from Robert Elder of Stirlingshire who settled at Burnfoot,
Ireland before 1700.
   >Is this of interest to anyone? Would love to hear from you.
Catherine

Nancy's note:
Egles' book (PAXTANG PA chapter) lists:
4.  iii. Thomas, b. 1708; m. Mary Patterson, dau. of William  Patterson, of Paxtang. "

...> I am descended from a David Elder for whom the only date we have is his marriage to
Hannah Jamieson in Linlithgow, Scotland in 1788. His occupation was listed as
Master Cooper and we believe that he went to Linlithgow for work in one of the distilleries there.
We have not yet discovered his birthplace.
His son, also David Elder and my Gt-Gt-Grandfather, had planned to emigrate to New Zealand
but died in 1862 in Raploch - then a small village but now a suburb of Stirling, Scotland.
He and his wife Jessie Robertson are buried in Stirling together with one of their daughters Jane Kerr Elder.
All of the survivng family members emigrated and became established in New Zealand in the mid-1860's.
We have good records from that time.
Our best clue to the origins of the family come from the links with Stirling.
David Elder had spent most of his working life as an Inspector of Fisheries in the Orkney Islands
and in other fishing ports on the East Coast of Scotland.
However, when he retired in ill-health he went to the Stirling area and died in the home of a woman
we believe may have been a cousin - her father was a Thomas Elder, born in 1774 in
Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland (14 miles away).
We know also of a son of David Elder's, William, whose success in Veterinary studies at
Edinburgh University was recorded in the local Stirling newspaper,
which serves to strenghten the possibility of a family connection in the area.
Any help from others researching family connections in the Stirlingshire or Perthshire areas would be welcomed.

...."My interest is drawn by the following post from '07 (Post #5):
"Intriguingly a David Elder died at Raploch Farm in 1862: fishery officer at Island of Westray, Orkney;
then at Helmsdale, and lately resided at Raploch, spouse of Janet Robertson or Elder.
Davids family later emigrated to new Zealand or there abouts. My theory is that he must have been related to
the "Raploch Elders", why would he be visiting them otherwise?
He and his family were planning to emigrate at the time and I think he went to say farewell."
  >The David Elder in question was my Gt-Gt-Grandfather.  I am descended from one of his sons
who emigrated to New Zealand in the 1850-60s.  David Elder, his wife and eldest daughter Jane Kerr Elder
were planning to come to New Zealand also. However, all three died within the space of 12 months.
Five of the family - 3 sons and 2 daughters - settled in New Zealand and we have full records of their families here.
In fact one of my cousins is about to publish a family history in June '09..."

ELDER.--A genealogy of the Elder Family in Scotland, Ireland,
Canada, and the United States, is being compiled by J. J. ELDER,
1 Board of Trade, Indianapolis.  He would be obliged for
authentic information as to the origin of the name, and the
early history of the family; also for genealogies of the
different branches of the family in the above-mentioned countries.

MATHEWSON and SPROULE.--J.J. ELDER, 1 Board of Trade,
Indianapolis, Ind., has in preparation genealogies of these families.
The Mathewsons crossed from the Hebrides, Scotland, into the
north of Ireland, about two hundred years ago; and from these most of their
descendants have emigrated to the New World, and are settled at Montreal,
Winnipeg. Detroit, New York and many other places on this continent.
The SPROULES, who have frequently intermarried with the Mathewsons,
were Lairds of Cowden in Scotland, from the time of Robert Bruce.
They sold their estates to the Earls of Dundonald, and removed
to County Tyrone, Ireland, where the majority of their descendants
reside, but a portion of them are in the United States.  Mr. Elder has
already collected some valuable materials, and invites correspondence.
