"The death has occurred of David Nathaniel ELDER of
Ballyderowen, Burnfoot, Donegal
Reposing at his late residence.
Funeral from his late residence on Thursday afternoon
at 1.30pm for Service in Fahan Presbyterian Church.
Burial afterwards in Fahan Parish Burying Ground.
Family flowers only, please. Donations in lieu of flowers,
if desired, to the Donegal Hospice, c/o The Elder Family.
The house is private please, between 10pm and 10am.
Date published: Tuesday, February 10, 2009"

"The village of Fahan is situated about 3 miles south of Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland.
St. Mura's (Church of Ireland) Church has a new cemetery at the rear.
About 50 yards south of the church, on the main R238 road, is the old monastry and an ancient graveyard.
This walled graveyard contains the ruins of a monastry which was founded in the 6th century by
St. Colmcille, who made one of his followers, St. Mura, the first abbot."

No ELDER on their list -- only 21 names listed,tho.

Hannah Jamieson in Linlithgow, Scotland in 1788. His occupation was listed as
Master Cooper and we believe that he went to Linlithgow for work in one of the distilleries there.
We have not yet discovered his birthplace.
His son, also David Elder and my Gt-Gt-Grandfather, had planned to emigrate to New Zealand
but died in 1862 in Raploch - then a small village but now a suburb of Stirling, Scotland.
He and his wife Jessie Robertson are buried in Stirling together with one of their daughters Jane Kerr Elder.
All of the survivng family members emigrated and became established in New Zealand in the mid-1860's.
We have good records from that time.
Our best clue to the origins of the family come from the links with Stirling.
David Elder had spent most of his working life as an Inspector of Fisheries in the Orkney Islands
and in other fishing ports on the East Coast of Scotland.
However, when he retired in ill-health he went to the Stirling area and died in the home of a woman
we believe may have been a cousin - her father was a Thomas Elder, born in 1774 in
Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland (14 miles away).
We know also of a son of David Elder's, William, whose success in Veterinary studies at
Edinburgh University was recorded in the local Stirling newspaper,
which serves to strenghten the possibility of a family connection in the area.
Any help from others researching family connections in the Stirlingshire or Perthshire areas would be welcomed.

"Castlefin (Irish: Caisleán na Finne), (sometimes spelt Castlefinn)
is a market town in the Finn Valley of County Donegal, Ireland an Ulster county within the Republic of Ireland.
The town has a population of 810 (2006) and is located between Ballybofey and Lifford.
The River Finn flows by the town. The town is located in along the main N15 national primary road,
which runs from Bundoran to Lifford. The town lies 6 miles from Lifford and 8 miles from the twin towns of
Ballybofey /Stranorlar. It has close links to the twin towns of Ballybofey/ Stranorlar,
Letterkenny and has strong links with West Tyrone in Northern Ireland, especially with the towns of Strabane and Castlederg.
"Castlefinn is in the parish of Donaghmore, barony of Raphoe, 4.5 miles from Lifford.
It's name translates from the castle on the banks of the River Finn,
the stones from the castle were used in the construction of the bridge that still stands today,
and at the close of Elizabeth I’s reign it belonged to Sir Neill Garbh O’Donnell.
It is situated on the river Finn, which is navigable to the River Foyle for vessels of 14 tons’ burden,
is on the road from Strabane to Stranorlar and in 1837 consisted of a single street, with a Roman Catholic Chapel."

ELDER.--A genealogy of the Elder Family in Scotland, Ireland,
Canada, and the United States, is being compiled by J. J. ELDER,
1 Board of Trade, Indianapolis. He would be obliged for
authentic information as to the origin of the name, and the
early history of the family; also for genealogies of the
different branches of the family in the above-mentioned countries.

MATHEWSON and SPROULE.--J.J. ELDER, 1 Board of Trade,
Indianapolis, Ind., has in preparation genealogies of these families.
The Mathewsons crossed from the Hebrides, Scotland, into the
north of Ireland, about two hundred years ago; and from these most of their
descendants have emigrated to the New World, and are settled at Montreal,
Winnipeg. Detroit, New York and many other places on this continent.
The SPROULES, who have frequently intermarried with the Mathewsons,
were Lairds of Cowden in Scotland, from the time of Robert Bruce.
They sold their estates to the Earls of Dundonald, and removed
to County Tyrone, Ireland, where the majority of their descendants
reside, but a portion of them are in the United States. Mr. Elder has
already collected some valuable materials, and invites correspondence.
