IV - JOSEPH ELDER, SR., son of Robert, was born November 16, 1770 and  died August 7, 1858.  He married
Jane Walker, who was descended from the Walkers of Revolutionary  fame.  Jane was niece of Jonathan Walker,
former Judge of Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Her cousin, Robert J. Walker, was a member of President Polk's
cabinet.  Jane Walker and her sister were both famed for their beauty and cleverness. (From The Home Monthly
of Jan 1899, a magazine then printed in Pittsburgh.)  At about this time Samuel Elder and his wife had celebrated
their 65th wedding anniversary .  Samuel was a son of Joseph Elder, Sr., and brother to Joseph, Jr.

V - JOSEPH ELDER, JR., born December 23, 1811, died June 27, 1868, married Eliza Penrose, who was born
November 1816 and died September 1889. Joseph Elder, father of Mrs.
Elizabeth Elder Shoup (b Dec 1, 1849) was of Scotch-Irish ancestry and first settled in Path Valley,
Franklin County, subsequently removing to Ligonier Valley, Westmoreland County.
There he became the owner of 160 acres which he succeeded in clearing, incontrovertible evidence of
        his enterprise and perseverance.
Politically Mr. Elder was originally a Whig, but  later identified himself with the Republicans.  He and his wife were
members of the Presbyterian Church of Ligonier.  Mr. Elder married Eliza Penrose and their children were:
        Mary, m John G. Lowry of Beaver Falls, Pa;
Margaret became the wife of Thomas Smith of Ligonier; William A. of Ligonier; and Elizabeth McFarland who
became wife of Henry A. Shoup.  Mr. Elder died in Ligonier Valley.
(This from "Old & New Westmoreland" Vol III, pp2l8-19)
Margaret Elder, the daughter of Joseph Elder, Jr., was born January 8, 1848 and died April 14, 1918.  She
married Thomas J. Smith who was born 1840 and died 1895, and their children were Ralph, Nellie, Carl, Alice
and Harry.  See more about them under the Smith record.
Our Grandmother Margaret Elder Smith was raised on what later became known as the Shirey Farm, a
couple miles west of Ligonier and just east of the Colonial Inn formerly owned and operated by Maude Patterson
and now (1989) run by Vic Smith,Jr.(no kin).  Grandmother's father was Joseph Elder, Jr., and he lived in the
smaller house which sits back a ways from the big house.  Joseph Jr.'s brother, a more recent "Colonel" Elder,
           lived in the big house.
