IV - JOSEPH ELDER, SR., son of Robert, was born November 16, 1770
and died August 7, 1858. He married
Jane Walker,
who was descended from the Walkers of Revolutionary fame. Jane
was niece of Jonathan Walker,
former Judge
of Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Her cousin, Robert J. Walker, was a member
of President Polk's
cabinet.
Jane Walker and her sister were both famed for their beauty and cleverness.

Samuel Elder and his wife had celebrated
their
65th wedding anniversary . Samuel was a son of Joseph Elder, Sr.,
and brother to Joseph, Jr.
V - JOSEPH ELDER, JR., born December 23, 1811, died June 27,
1868, married Eliza Penrose, who was born
November 1816 and died
September 1889. Joseph Elder, father of Mrs.
Elizabeth Elder Shoup
(b Dec 1, 1849) was of Scotch-Irish ancestry and first settled in Path
Valley,
Franklin County, subsequently
removing to Ligonier Valley, Westmoreland County.
There he became the owner
of 160 acres which he succeeded in clearing, incontrovertible evidence
of
his enterprise and perseverance.
Politically Mr. Elder
was originally a Whig, but later identified himself with the Republicans.
He and his wife were
members of the Presbyterian
Church of Ligonier. Mr. Elder married Eliza Penrose and their children
were:
Mary, m John G. Lowry
of Beaver Falls, Pa;
Margaret became the wife
of Thomas Smith of Ligonier; William A. of Ligonier; and Elizabeth McFarland
who
became wife of Henry
A. Shoup. Mr. Elder died in Ligonier Valley.

Margaret
Elder, the daughter of Joseph Elder, Jr., was born January 8, 1848 and
died April 14, 1918. She
married Thomas
J. Smith who was born 1840 and died 1895, and their children were Ralph,
Nellie, Carl, Alice
and Harry.

Our Grandmother
Margaret Elder Smith was raised on what later became known as the Shirey
Farm, a
couple miles west
of Ligonier and just east of the Colonial Inn formerly owned and operated
by Maude Patterson
and
now (1989) run by Vic Smith,Jr.(no kin). Grandmother's father was
Joseph Elder, Jr., and he lived in the
smaller house
which sits back a ways from the big house. Joseph Jr.'s brother,
a more recent "Colonel" Elder,
lived
in the big house.
